14 1-7 Saúl acampó en Migrón, bajo un árbol, en las afueras de Guibeá. Con él estaban seiscientos soldados y el sacerdote Ahías, que era hijo de Ahitub y sobrino de Icabod. Su abuelo era Finees, hijo del sacerdote Elí, que había servido a Dios en Siló.
Jonatán le dijo al joven que le ayudaba a cargar su armadura:
—Ven, acompáñame al otro lado. Vamos a acercarnos al ejército de los filisteos. Aunque somos pocos, con la ayuda de Dios los vamos a derrotar.
Su ayudante le respondió:
—Haga usted lo que mejor le parezca. Por mi parte, yo lo apoyaré en todo.
Jonatán se fue sin que nadie lo supiera, ni siquiera su padre. 8 Cuando se acercaron a donde estaban los filisteos, Jonatán le dijo a su ayudante:
—Ven, vamos a acercarnos a ellos, para que nos vean. 9 Si nos dicen: “Alto ahí; no se muevan hasta que lleguemos a donde están”, así lo haremos. 10 Pero si nos dicen que vayamos a donde ellos están, ésa será la señal de que Dios nos ayudará a derrotarlos.
11 Entonces se acercaron. Y cuando los filisteos los vieron, se dijeron unos a otros: «Miren, los israelitas ya están saliendo de sus escondites».
12 Enseguida le gritaron a Jonatán y a su ayudante: «¡Vengan acá, que les vamos a decir algo!»
Jonatán le dijo a su ayudante: «Vayamos, pues Dios nos ayudará a vencerlos». 13 Así que subió ayudándose con pies y manos, y tras él subió su ayudante. A cada soldado filisteo que encontraba, lo hería, y su ayudante lo mataba. 14 En ese ataque, y en un lugar tan estrecho, Jonatán y su ayudante mataron a unos veinte hombres. 15 Además, Dios hizo que temblara la tierra, y el ejército filisteo se asustó mucho.
16 Saúl había puesto en Guibeá de Benjamín unos vigilantes, y cuando éstos vieron que el ejército filisteo estaba huyendo en completo desorden 17 fueron a decírselo a Saúl. Entonces él ordenó pasar lista, para ver quién faltaba.
Una vez que se pasó lista, le informaron a Saúl que faltaban Jonatán y su ayudante. 18 Como en esos días los israelitas tenían con ellos el cofre del pacto de Dios, Saúl le dijo al sacerdote Ahías: «Trae el cofre y consulta a Dios qué debemos hacer». 19 Sin embargo, al darse cuenta de que aumentaba la confusión en el campamento de los filisteos, le dijo a Ahías: «Ya no hace falta que lo traigas».
20-23 Los soldados filisteos estaban tan confundidos que se mataban unos a otros. Entonces Saúl reunió a todos sus hombres, y juntos se lanzaron a la batalla. Durante mucho tiempo algunos israelitas habían sido obligados a formar parte del ejército filisteo, pero en ese momento se unieron al ejército de Saúl y Jonatán. Y cuando los israelitas que se habían escondido en los cerros de Efraín supieron que los filisteos estaban huyendo, fueron también a perseguirlos. Así fue como la batalla llegó hasta Bet-avén.
El juramento de Saúl
24 Todos los israelitas estaban muy cansados, pero ninguno de ellos había comido porque Saúl había hecho este juramento: «Todo el que coma algo antes del anochecer, y antes de que me haya vengado de mis enemigos, será condenado a muerte».
25-27 La gente tenía mucho miedo del juramento de Saúl, así que cuando llegaron a un bosque donde había mucha miel, ninguno de ellos se atrevió a probarla. Como Jonatán no estaba enterado del juramento que había hecho su padre, tomó miel con el palo que llevaba en su mano, y en cuanto la probó, cobró nuevas fuerzas.
28 Pero uno de los soldados le dijo:
—Su padre ha hecho un juramento. Cualquiera que coma algo hoy, quedará bajo maldición y será condenado a muerte. Por eso, aunque estamos muy cansados, no hemos comido nada.
29 Jonatán respondió:
—¡Con ese juramento mi padre le ha hecho mucho daño al pueblo! Si yo, con un poco de miel, he recobrado las fuerzas, 30 imagínense cómo habría sido si el ejército hubiera comido hoy de la comida de nuestros enemigos: ¡su victoria habría sido mayor!
31 La batalla se extendió desde Micmás hasta Aialón, y no paró hasta que los israelitas derrotaron a los filisteos. Pero los israelitas terminaron muy cansados, 32 así que esa misma noche tomaron las ovejas, vacas y terneros que les habían quitado a los filisteos, y los mataron, comiéndose la carne con todo y sangre. 33 Pero alguien le dijo a Saúl:
—La gente está comiendo carne con sangre, y Dios nos ha prohibido hacer eso.
Enojado, Saúl dijo:
—¡Ustedes nunca obedecen a Dios! Tráiganme pronto una piedra grande, y díganle a la gente que traiga aquí su toro o su oveja. 34 Que los maten aquí, y se los coman sin sangre. Así no ofenderán a Dios.
Esa misma noche cada uno llevó su propio toro y lo sacrificó allí. 35 En ese lugar Saúl construyó por primera vez un altar para adorar a Dios. 36 Luego les dijo a sus soldados:
—No pasará esta noche sin que acabemos con los filisteos y nos quedemos con todas sus pertenencias.
Y ellos le contestaron:
—Haremos todo lo que usted nos mande.
Pero el sacerdote le dijo:
—Primero debemos consultar a Dios.
37 Entonces Saúl le preguntó a Dios: «¿Puedo perseguir a los filisteos? ¿Nos ayudarás otra vez a vencerlos?» Pero Dios no le contestó, 38 así que Saúl les dijo a los jefes de su ejército:
—Acérquense y díganme por culpa de quién Dios no me responde. 39 Les juro por Dios que morirá, aunque se trate de mi hijo Jonatán.
Pero ninguno le respondió. 40 Entonces Saúl le dijo a todo el pueblo:
—Pónganse ustedes de aquel lado, y mi hijo Jonatán y yo nos pondremos de este otro.
Y el pueblo le respondió:
—Haremos todo lo que usted nos mande.
41 Saúl echó suertes y le pidió al Dios de Israel: «Dime quién tiene la culpa, si Jonatán, el pueblo, o yo».
La suerte recayó sobre Jonatán y Saúl, de modo que el pueblo quedó libre de culpa. 42 Entonces Saúl dijo: «Ahora echemos suertes entre Jonatán y yo».
Como la suerte recayó sobre Jonatán, 43 Saúl le dijo:
—Dime lo que hiciste.
Y Jonatán le respondió:
—Lo único que hice fue probar un poco de miel. ¿Por eso me van a matar?
44 Saúl le contestó:
—¡Jonatán, que Dios me castigue duramente si no mueres!
45 Pero la gente se opuso a Saúl:
—De ninguna manera vamos a permitir que Jonatán muera. Gracias a él, y con la ayuda de Dios, Israel ha alcanzado una victoria total.
Así fue como la gente le salvó la vida a Jonatán.
46-52 Por su parte, Saúl ya no persiguió a los filisteos, así que éstos se fueron de regreso a su tierra. A pesar de todo esto, los israelitas estuvieron en guerra con los filisteos mientras Saúl fue rey de Israel. Por eso Saúl siempre tenía en su ejército a los jóvenes más fuertes y valientes.
Después de esto, el rey Saúl siguió luchando contra Moab, Amón, Edom, los reyes de Sobá, los filisteos y los amalecitas. Venció a todos sus enemigos, y alcanzó grandes triunfos. Así fue como libró a Israel de los pueblos que les robaban todo lo que tenían.
Saúl tuvo tres hijos, que fueron Jonatán, Isví y Malquisúa. También tuvo dos hijas; la mayor se llamaba Merab, y la menor, Mical. Su esposa se llamaba Ahinóam, y era hija de Ahimaas. El general de su ejército se llamaba Abner, y era hijo de Ner, tío de Saúl. El padre de Saúl y el padre de Abner eran hermanos.

14 1 Cierto día, Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, sin decirle nada a su padre, ordenó a su escudero: «Ven acá. Vamos a cruzar al otro lado, donde está el destacamento de los filisteos».
2 Saúl estaba en las afueras de Guibeá, bajo un granado en Migrón, y tenía con él unos seiscientos hombres. 3 El efod lo llevaba Ahías, hijo de Ajitob, que era hermano de Icabod, el hijo de Finés y nieto de Elí, sacerdote del Señor en Siló.
Nadie sabía que Jonatán había salido, 4 y para llegar a la guarnición filistea Jonatán tenía que cruzar un paso entre dos peñascos, llamados Bosés y Sene. 5 El primero estaba al norte, frente a Micmás; el otro, al sur, frente a Gueba. 6 Así que Jonatán dijo a su escudero:
—Vamos a cruzar hacia la guarnición de esos paganos.[a] Espero que el Señor nos ayude, pues para él no es difícil salvarnos, ya sea con muchos o con pocos.
7 —¡Adelante! —respondió el escudero—. Haga usted todo lo que tenga pensado hacer, que cuenta con todo mi apoyo.
8 —Bien —dijo Jonatán—, vamos a cruzar hasta donde están ellos, para que nos vean. 9 Si nos dicen: “¡Esperen a que los alcancemos!”, ahí nos quedaremos, en vez de avanzar. 10 Pero si nos dicen: “¡Vengan acá!”, avanzaremos, pues será señal de que el Señor nos va a dar la victoria.
11 Así pues, los dos se dejaron ver por la guarnición filistea.
—¡Miren —exclamaron los filisteos—, los hebreos empiezan a salir de las cuevas donde estaban escondidos!
12 Entonces los soldados de la guarnición gritaron a Jonatán y a su escudero:
—¡Vengan acá! Tenemos algo que decirles.
—Ven conmigo —dijo Jonatán a su escudero—, porque el Señor ha dado la victoria a Israel.
13 Jonatán trepó con pies y manos seguido por su escudero. A los filisteos que eran derribados por Jonatán, el escudero los remataba. 14 En ese primer encuentro, que tuvo lugar en un espacio reducido,[b] Jonatán y su escudero mataron a unos veinte hombres.
Israel derrota a los filisteos
15 Cundió entonces el pánico en el campamento filisteo y entre el ejército que estaba en el campo abierto. Todos ellos se acobardaron, incluso los soldados de la guarnición y las tropas de asalto. Hasta la tierra tembló y hubo un pánico extraordinario.[c]
16 Los centinelas de Saúl podían ver desde Guibeá de Benjamín que el campamento huía en desbandada. 17 Saúl dijo entonces a sus soldados: «Pasen revista a ver quién de los nuestros falta». Así lo hicieron, y resultó que faltaban Jonatán y su escudero.
18 Entonces Saúl pidió a Ahías que trajera el arca de Dios. (En aquel tiempo el arca estaba con los israelitas). 19 Pero mientras hablaban, el desconcierto en el campo filisteo se hizo peor, así que Saúl dijo al sacerdote: «¡No lo hagas!».
20 Enseguida Saúl reunió a su ejército y todos juntos se lanzaron a la batalla. Era tal la confusión entre los filisteos, que se mataban unos a otros. 21 Además, los hebreos que hacía tiempo se habían unido a los filisteos y que estaban con ellos en el campamento, se pasaron a las filas de los israelitas que estaban con Saúl y Jonatán. 22 Y los israelitas que se habían escondido en los montes de Efraín, al oír que los filisteos huían, se unieron a la batalla para perseguirlos. 23 Así libró el Señor a Israel aquel día y la batalla se extendió más allá de Bet Avén.
El juramento de Saúl
24 Los israelitas desfallecían de hambre, pues Saúl había puesto al ejército bajo este juramento: «¡Maldito el que coma algo antes del anochecer, antes de que pueda vengarme de mis enemigos!». Así que aquel día ninguno de los soldados había probado bocado.
25 Al llegar todos a un bosque, notaron que había miel en el suelo. 26 Cuando el ejército entró en el bosque, vieron que la miel corría como agua, pero por miedo al juramento nadie se atrevió a probarla. 27 Sin embargo, Jonatán, que no había oído a su padre poner al ejército bajo juramento, alargó la vara que llevaba en la mano, hundió la punta en un panal de miel y se la llevó a la boca. Enseguida se le iluminó el rostro. 28 Pero uno de los soldados le advirtió:
—Tu padre puso al ejército bajo un juramento solemne, diciendo: “¡Maldito el que coma algo hoy!”. Y por eso los soldados desfallecen.
29 —Mi padre ha causado un gran daño al país —respondió Jonatán—. Miren cómo me volvió el color al rostro cuando probé un poco de esta miel. 30 ¡Imagínense si todo el ejército hubiera comido del botín que se arrebató al enemigo! ¡Cuánto mayor habría sido el estrago causado a los filisteos!
31 Aquel día los israelitas mataron filisteos desde Micmás hasta Ayalón. Y como los soldados estaban exhaustos, 32 echaron mano del botín. Agarraron ovejas, vacas y terneros, los degollaron sobre el suelo y se comieron la carne con todo y sangre. 33 Entonces le contaron a Saúl:
—Los soldados están pecando contra el Señor, pues están comiendo carne junto con la sangre.
—¡Son unos traidores! —respondió Saúl—. Hagan rodar una piedra grande y tráiganmela ahora mismo.
34 También les dijo:
—Vayan y díganle a la gente que cada uno me traiga su toro o su oveja para degollarlos y comerlos aquí; y que no coman ya carne junto con la sangre, para que no pequen contra el Señor.
Esa misma noche cada uno llevó su toro y lo degollaron allí. 35 Luego Saúl construyó un altar al Señor. Este fue el primer altar que levantó. 36 Y dijo:
—Vayamos esta noche tras los filisteos. Antes de que amanezca, quitémosles todo lo que tienen y no dejemos a nadie con vida.
—Haz lo que te parezca mejor —respondieron.
—Primero debemos consultar a Dios —intervino el sacerdote.
37 Saúl entonces preguntó a Dios: «¿Debo perseguir a los filisteos? ¿Los entregarás en manos de Israel?». Pero Dios no respondió aquel día. 38 Así que Saúl dijo:
—Todos ustedes, jefes del ejército, acérquense y averigüen cuál es el pecado que se ha cometido hoy. 39 ¡Tan cierto como el Señor y Salvador de Israel vive, les aseguro que aun si el culpable es mi hijo Jonatán, morirá sin remedio!
Nadie se atrevió a decirle nada. 40 Dijo entonces a todos los israelitas:
—Pónganse ustedes de un lado, y mi hijo Jonatán y yo nos pondremos del otro.
—Haga lo que le parezca —respondieron ellos.
41 Luego rogó Saúl al Señor, Dios de Israel, que le diera una respuesta clara. La suerte cayó sobre Jonatán y Saúl, de modo que los demás quedaron libres. 42 Entonces dijo Saúl:
—Echen suertes entre mi hijo Jonatán y yo.
Y la suerte cayó sobre Jonatán, 43 así que Saúl dijo:
—Cuéntame lo que has hecho.
—Es verdad que probé un poco de miel con la punta de mi vara —respondió Jonatán—. ¿Y por eso tengo que morir?
44 —Jonatán, si tú no mueres, ¡que Dios me castigue sin piedad! —exclamó Saúl.
45 Los soldados replicaron:
—¡Cómo va a morir Jonatán, siendo que ha dado esta gran victoria a Israel! ¡Jamás! Tan cierto como que el Señor vive, ni un pelo de su cabeza caerá al suelo, pues con la ayuda de Dios hizo esta proeza.
Así libraron a Jonatán de la muerte.
46 Saúl a su vez dejó de perseguir a los filisteos, los cuales regresaron a su tierra.
47 Después de consolidar su reinado sobre Israel, Saúl luchó contra todos los enemigos que lo rodeaban, incluso contra los moabitas, los amonitas, los edomitas, los reyes de Sobá y los filisteos; y a todos los vencía 48 haciendo gala de valor. También derrotó a los amalecitas y libró a Israel de quienes lo saqueaban.
La familia de Saúl

14 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;
3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the Lord's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.
6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few.
7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.
10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the Lord hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.
14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.
16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.
21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
23 So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.
24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.
32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the Lord, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.
35 And Saul built an altar unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built unto the Lord.
36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.
37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
39 For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
41 Therefore Saul said unto the Lord God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
42 And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.
45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.
48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.
51 And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

14 1 One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side.” But he did not tell his father.
2 Saul was staying(A) on the outskirts of Gibeah(B) under a pomegranate tree(C) in Migron.(D) With him were about six hundred men, 3 among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s(E) brother Ahitub(F) son of Phinehas, the son of Eli,(G) the Lord’s priest in Shiloh.(H) No one was aware that Jonathan had left.
4 On each side of the pass(I) that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh. 5 One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.(J)
6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised(K) men. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing(L) can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many(M) or by few.(N)”
7 “Do all that you have in mind,” his armor-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”
8 Jonathan said, “Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us. 9 If they say to us, ‘Wait there until we come to you,’ we will stay where we are and not go up to them. 10 But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ we will climb up, because that will be our sign(O) that the Lord has given them into our hands.(P)”
11 So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. “Look!” said the Philistines. “The Hebrews(Q) are crawling out of the holes they were hiding(R) in.” 12 The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, “Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson.(S)”
So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, “Climb up after me; the Lord has given them into the hand(T) of Israel.”
13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. 14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.
Israel Routs the Philistines
15 Then panic(U) struck the whole army—those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding(V) parties—and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.[a]
16 Saul’s lookouts(W) at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. 17 Then Saul said to the men who were with him, “Muster the forces and see who has left us.” When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.
18 Saul said to Ahijah, “Bring(X) the ark(Y) of God.” (At that time it was with the Israelites.)[b] 19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest,(Z) “Withdraw your hand.”
20 Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking(AA) each other with their swords. 21 Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went(AB) over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. 22 When all the Israelites who had hidden(AC) in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. 23 So on that day the Lord saved(AD) Israel, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.(AE)
Jonathan Eats Honey
24 Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath,(AF) saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!” So none of the troops tasted food.
25 The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 26 When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. 27 But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb.(AG) He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.[c] 28 Then one of the soldiers told him, “Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, ‘Cursed be anyone who eats food today!’ That is why the men are faint.”
29 Jonathan said, “My father has made trouble(AH) for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. 30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?”
31 That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash(AI) to Aijalon,(AJ) they were exhausted. 32 They pounced on the plunder(AK) and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood.(AL) 33 Then someone said to Saul, “Look, the men are sinning against the Lord by eating meat that has blood(AM) in it.”
“You have broken faith,” he said. “Roll a large stone over here at once.” 34 Then he said, “Go out among the men and tell them, ‘Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the Lord by eating meat with blood still(AN) in it.’”
So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. 35 Then Saul built an altar(AO) to the Lord; it was the first time he had done this.
36 Saul said, “Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive.”
“Do whatever seems best to you,” they replied.
But the priest said, “Let us inquire(AP) of God here.”
37 So Saul asked God, “Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?” But God did not answer(AQ) him that day.
38 Saul therefore said, “Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed(AR) today. 39 As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,(AS) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,(AT) he must die.”(AU) But not one of them said a word.
40 Saul then said to all the Israelites, “You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here.”
“Do what seems best to you,” they replied.
41 Then Saul prayed to the Lord, the God of Israel, “Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the men of Israel are at fault,[d] respond with Thummim.” Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. 42 Saul said, “Cast the lot(AV) between me and Jonathan my son.” And Jonathan was taken.
43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, “Tell me what you have done.”(AW)
So Jonathan told him, “I tasted a little honey(AX) with the end of my staff. And now I must die!”
44 Saul said, “May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,(AY) if you do not die, Jonathan.(AZ)”
45 But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair(BA) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued(BB) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.
46 Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.
47 After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab,(BC) the Ammonites,(BD) Edom,(BE) the kings[e] of Zobah,(BF) and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.[f] 48 He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites,(BG) delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.
Saul’s Family
49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua.(BH) The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal.(BI) 50 His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner(BJ) son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle.(BK) 51 Saul’s father Kish(BL) and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.
52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took(BM) him into his service.
