12 Más tarde, Samuel les dijo a todos los israelitas:
2-3 —Ustedes me pidieron un rey, y he cumplido su deseo: les he dado un rey, que de ahora en adelante los gobernará.
»Desde que yo era joven, y hasta la fecha, he sido el jefe de ustedes, y mis hijos son parte del pueblo. Pero ya estoy viejo. Ha llegado el momento de que, delante de Dios y de su rey, me digan cómo me he portado.
»¿Con quién he sido injusto? ¿A quién le he quitado algo con engaños, o a la fuerza? ¿De quién he recibido dinero para cometer injusticias? ¿A quién le he robado su buey, o su burro?
»Si algo de esto he cometido contra cualquiera de ustedes, éste es el momento de decirlo; ¡éste es el momento de acusarme! Así pagaré mis deudas.
4 Pero ellos le respondieron:
—Jamás nos has robado. Jamás nos engañaste, ni aceptaste nunca dinero para cometer injusticias.
5 Entonces Samuel les dijo:
—Dios y el rey que él ha elegido son testigos de que ninguno de ustedes me acusa de nada.
Y ellos respondieron:
—Así es. Dios y el rey son testigos.
6-8 Después de esto, Samuel pronunció este sermón ante el pueblo:
«Préstenme atención, que voy a hacer un recuento de las muchas veces que Dios los ha salvado a ustedes y a sus antepasados.
»Después de que Jacob llegó a Egipto, los israelitas le rogaron a Dios que los librara de la esclavitud. Entonces Dios envió a Moisés y a Aarón, para que sacaran de Egipto a los antepasados de ustedes y los trajeran a esta tierra.
9 »Sin embargo, ellos se olvidaron de su Dios. Por eso él permitió que los dominaran Sísara, el jefe del ejército de Hasor, los filisteos y el rey de Moab.
10 »Pero los israelitas reconocieron que se habían alejado de Dios, y le dijeron: “Hemos pecado contra ti, pues hemos adorado a Baal y a Astarté, dioses de otras naciones. Líbranos del poder de nuestros enemigos, y te adoraremos sólo a ti”.
11 »Dios envió entonces a Jerubaal, a Bedán y a Jefté, y también a mí, para librarlos del poder de sus enemigos. Por eso ahora ustedes viven en paz.
12 »Acuérdense también de que, cuando supieron que los iba a atacar Nahas, el rey de los amonitas, ustedes me pidieron que les diera un rey, a pesar de que su rey era el Dios que sacó de Egipto a nuestro pueblo.
13 »Pues bien, nuestro Dios les ha dado ya el rey que ustedes pidieron. 14 Si ustedes y su rey obedecen y sirven sólo a Dios, él los bendecirá y ustedes vivirán en paz. 15 Pero si no lo obedecen, entonces los castigará como lo hizo con sus antepasados.
16 »Prepárense, porque en este momento nuestro Dios va a hacer un milagro delante de nosotros. 17 Como saben, ahora es el tiempo de la cosecha y no el tiempo de lluvias; sin embargo, le voy a pedir a Dios que haga llover y envíe truenos. Así Dios les mostrará que ustedes hicieron muy mal al pedirle un rey».
18 Entonces Samuel le pidió a Dios que enviara lluvia y truenos, y Dios así lo hizo. 19 Al ver los israelitas lo que Dios y Samuel habían hecho, sintieron mucho miedo y le dijeron a Samuel:
—Hemos sido muy rebeldes, pues hasta hemos exigido tener un rey. Ruégale a Dios que no nos quite la vida.
20 Y Samuel les contestó:
—No tengan miedo. Aunque han hecho mal, no dejen de obedecer y amar a Dios; al contrario, sírvanle de buena gana 21 y no adoren a esos ídolos huecos y vacíos que no pueden hacerles bien ni ayudarlos.
22 »Dios no los rechazará a ustedes, pues quedaría mal ante los otros pueblos. Además, él quiso que ustedes fueran suyos.
23 »En cuanto a mí, nunca dejaré de pedirle a Dios por ustedes. Dejar de hacerlo sería un pecado. Yo siempre les enseñaré a portarse bien y a vivir como Dios quiere.
24 »Ustedes saben bien todo lo bueno que Dios ha hecho por ustedes. Por eso, obedézcanlo y sírvanle siempre de buena gana. 25 Si no lo hacen, ustedes y su rey morirán.

Discurso de despedida de Samuel
12 Samuel habló a todo Israel:
—¡Préstenme atención! Yo les he hecho caso en todo lo que me han pedido y les he dado un rey que los gobierne. 2 Ya tienen al rey que va a dirigirlos. En cuanto a mí, ya estoy viejo y lleno de canas, y mis hijos son parte del pueblo. Yo los he guiado a ustedes desde mi juventud hasta la fecha. 3 Aquí me tienen. Pueden acusarme en la presencia del Señor y de su ungido. ¿A quién le he robado un buey o un asno? ¿A quién he defraudado? ¿A quién he oprimido? ¿Por quién me he dejado sobornar? Acúsenme y pagaré lo que corresponda.
4 —No nos has defraudado —respondieron—; tampoco nos has oprimido ni has robado nada a nadie.
5 Samuel insistió:
—¡Que el Señor y su ungido sean hoy testigos de que ustedes no me han hallado culpable de nada!
—¡Él es testigo! —fue la respuesta del pueblo.
6 Además Samuel dijo:
—Testigo es el Señor, quien escogió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacar de Egipto a los antepasados de ustedes. 7 Y ahora, préstenme atención. El Señor los ha colmado de beneficios a ustedes y a sus antepasados, pero yo tengo una querella contra ustedes ante el Señor.
8 »Después de que Jacob entró en Egipto, sus descendientes clamaron al Señor. Entonces el Señor envió a Moisés y a Aarón para sacarlos de Egipto y establecerlos en este lugar.
9 »Pero, como se olvidaron de su Señor y Dios, él los entregó al poder de Sísara, comandante del ejército de Jazor, y al poder de los filisteos y del rey de Moab; y ellos les hicieron la guerra. 10 Por eso ustedes clamaron al Señor: “Hemos pecado al abandonar al Señor y adorar a los ídolos de Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté. Pero ahora, si nos libras del poder de nuestros enemigos, solo a ti te serviremos”. 11 Entonces el Señor envió a Yerubaal, Barac,[a] Jefté y Samuel, y los libró a ustedes del poder de los enemigos que los rodeaban, para que vivieran seguros.
12 »No obstante, cuando ustedes vieron que Najás, rey de los amonitas, los amenazaba, me dijeron: “¡No! ¡Queremos que nos gobierne un rey!”. Y esto, a pesar de que el Señor su Dios es el rey de ustedes. 13 Pues bien, aquí tienen al rey que pidieron y que han escogido. Pero tengan en cuenta que es el Señor quien les ha dado ese rey. 14 Si ustedes y el rey que los gobierne temen al Señor su Dios, y le sirven y obedecen, acatando sus mandatos y manteniéndose fieles a él, ¡magnífico! 15 En cambio, si desobedecen al Señor y no acatan sus mandatos, él descargará su mano sobre ustedes como la descargó contra sus antepasados.
16 »Y ahora, préstenme atención y observen con sus propios ojos algo grandioso que el Señor va a hacer. 17 Ahora no es tiempo de lluvias, sino de cosecha de trigo. Sin embargo, voy a invocar al Señor, y él enviará truenos y lluvia; así se darán cuenta de la gran maldad que han cometido ante el Señor al pedir un rey».
18 Samuel invocó al Señor y ese mismo día el Señor mandó truenos y lluvia. Todo el pueblo sintió un gran temor ante el Señor y ante Samuel, 19 y dijeron a Samuel:
—Ora al Señor tu Dios por nosotros, tus siervos, para que no nos quite la vida. A todos nuestros pecados hemos añadido la maldad de pedirle un rey.
20 —No teman —respondió Samuel—. Aunque ustedes han cometido una gran maldad, no se aparten del Señor; más bien, sírvanle de todo corazón. 21 No se alejen de él por seguir a ídolos inútiles que no los pueden ayudar ni rescatar, pues no sirven para nada. 22 Por amor a su gran nombre, el Señor no rechazará a su pueblo; de hecho, él se ha dignado hacerlos a ustedes su propio pueblo. 23 En cuanto a mí, que el Señor me libre de pecar contra él dejando de orar por ustedes. Yo seguiré enseñándoles el camino bueno y recto. 24 Pero los exhorto a temer al Señor y a servirle fielmente y de todo corazón, recordando los grandes beneficios que él ha hecho en favor de ustedes. 25 Si persisten en la maldad, tanto ustedes como su rey serán destruidos.

Samuel’s Farewell Speech
12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened(A) to everything you said to me and have set a king(B) over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader.(C) As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons(D) are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. 3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed.(E) Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey(F) have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe(G) to make me shut my eyes? If I have done(H) any of these things, I will make it right.”(I)
4 “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”
5 Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness(J) against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything(K) in my hand.(L)”
“He is witness,” they said.
6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought(M) your ancestors up out of Egypt. 7 Now then, stand(N) here, because I am going to confront(O) you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts(P) performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
8 “After Jacob(Q) entered Egypt, they cried(R) to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent(S) Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.
9 “But they forgot(T) the Lord their God; so he sold them(U) into the hand of Sisera,(V) the commander of the army of Hazor,(W) and into the hands of the Philistines(X) and the king of Moab,(Y) who fought against them. 10 They cried(Z) out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken(AA) the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths.(AB) But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[a](AC) Barak,[b](AD) Jephthah(AE) and Samuel,[c](AF) and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.
12 “But when you saw that Nahash(AG) king(AH) of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule(AI) over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king(AJ) you have chosen, the one you asked(AK) for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear(AL) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel(AM) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against(AN) his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.
16 “Now then, stand still(AO) and see(AP) this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest(AQ) now? I will call(AR) on the Lord to send thunder(AS) and rain.(AT) And you will realize what an evil(AU) thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”
18 Then Samuel called on the Lord,(AV) and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe(AW) of the Lord and of Samuel.
19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray(AX) to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die,(AY) for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”
20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil;(AZ) yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless(BA) idols.(BB) They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake(BC) of his great name(BD) the Lord will not reject(BE) his people, because the Lord was pleased to make(BF) you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray(BG) for you. And I will teach(BH) you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear(BI) the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart;(BJ) consider(BK) what great(BL) things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist(BM) in doing evil, both you and your king(BN) will perish.”(BO)

2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.
4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.
5 And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the Lord that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord of all the righteous acts of the Lord, which he did to you and to your fathers.
8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
9 And when they forgat the Lord their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
10 And they cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the Lord hath set a king over you.
14 If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the Lord your God:
15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord be against you, as it was against your fathers.
16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the Lord will do before your eyes.
17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the Lord, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking you a king.
18 So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the Lord thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart;
21 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
22 For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.
23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
24 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
