12 Da sagde Samuel til hele Israel: "Se, jeg har føjet eder i alt, hvad I har bedt mig om, og sat en Konge over eder. 2 Se, nu færdes Kongen for eders Ansigt; jeg er gammel og grå, og mine Sønner er nu iblandt eder; men jeg har færdedes for eders Ansigt fra min Ungdom indtil i Dag. 3 Se, her står jeg; viden imod mig i Herrens og hans, Salvedes Påhør! Hvis Okse har jeg taget? Hvis Æsel har jeg taget? Hvem har jeg, undertrykt? Hvem har jeg gjort Uret? Af hvem har jeg taget Gave og derfor lukket Øjnene? I så Fald vil jeg give eder Erstatning!" 4 Da sagde de: "Du har ikke undertrykt os eller gjort os Uret eller taget noget fra nogen." 5 Derpå sagde han til dem: "Så er Herren i Dag Vidne over for eder, også hans Salvede er Vidne, at I ikke har fundet noget hos mig." De sagde: "Ja!"
6 Da sagde Samuel til Folket: "Herren er Vidne, han, som udrustede Moses og Aron og førte eders Fædre op fra Ægypten. 7 Så træd nu frem, at jeg kan gå i Rette med eder for Herrens Åsyn og kundgøre eder alle de Gerninger, Herren i sin Retfærdigher har øvet mod eder og eders Fædre. 8 Da Jakob og hans Sønner var kommet til Ægypten, og Ægypterne plagede dem, råbte eders Fædre til Herren, og Herren sendte Moses og Aron, som førte eders Fædre ud af Ægypten, og han lod dem bosætte sig her. 9 Men de glemte Herren deres Gud; derfor prisgav han dem til Kong Jabin af Hazors Hærfører Sisera, til Filisterne og til Moabs Konge, så de angreb dem. 10 Da råbte de til Herren og sagde: Vi har syndet, thi vi forlod Herren og dyrkede Ba'alerne og Astarterne; men fri os nu af vore Fjenders Hånd, så vil vi dyrke dig! 11 Så sendte Herren Jerubba'al, Barak, Jefta og Samuel; og han friede eder af eders Fjenders Hånd rundt om, så I kunde bo i Tryghed. 12 Men da I så Ammoniterkongen Nahasj rykke frem imod eder, sagde I til mig: Nej, en Konge skal herske over os uagtet Herren eders Gud var eders Konge! 13 Og nu, her står Kongen, som I har valgt og krævet; se, Herren har sat en Konge over eder! 14 Hvis I frygter Herren og tjener ham, adlyder hans Røst og ikke er genstridige mod Herrens Bud, men følger Herren eders Gud, både I og Kongen, som har fået Herredømmet over eder, da skal det gå eder vel. 15 Adlyder I derimod ikke Herrens Røst, men er genstridige mod Herrens Bud, da skal Herrens Hånd ramme eder og eders Konge og ødelægge eder. 16 Træd nu frem og se den vældige Gerning, Herren vil øve for eders Øjne! 17 Har vi ikke Hvedehøst nu? Men jeg vil råbe til Herren, at han skal sende Torden og Regn, for at I kan kende og se, at det i Herrens Øjne var en stor Brøde I begik, da I krævede en Konge!"
18 Derpå råbte Samuel til Herren, og Herren sendte samme Dag Torden og Regn. Da frygtede hele folket såre for Herren og Samuel, 19 og hele Folket sagde til Samuel: "Bed for dine Trælle til Herren din Gud, at vi ikke skal dø, fordi vi til vore andre Synder har føjet den Brøde at kræve en Konge!" 20 Da sagde Samuel til Folket: "Frygt ikke! Vel har I øvet al den Synd; men vend eder nu ikke fra Herren, tjen ham af hele eders Hjerte 21 og vend eder ikke til dem, som er Tomhed og hverken kan hjælpe eller frelse, fordi de er Tomhed. 22 Thi for sit store Navns Skyld vil Herren ikke forstøde sit Folk, da det jo har behaget Herren at gøre eder til sit Folk. 23 Det være også langt fra mig at synde mod Herren og høre op med at bede for eder; jeg vil også vise eder den gode og rette Vej; 24 men frygt Herren og tjen ham oprigtigt af hele eders Hjerte; thi se, hvor store Ting han gjorde imod eder! 25 Men hvis I handler ilde, skal både I og eders Konge gå til Grunde!"

Samuels afskedstale til folket
12 Samuel sagde derefter til folket: „Se, jeg har nu opfyldt jeres ønske og givet jer en konge. 2 Det er denne konge, der nu skal være jeres leder. Her står jeg med mine sønner som en gammel, gråhåret mand. Jeg har tjent jer, lige siden jeg var dreng. 3 Sig mig nu, mens jeg står her for Guds ansigt og foran jeres nye konge: Har jeg nogen sinde taget så meget som en okse eller et æsel fra nogen af jer? Har jeg udnyttet nogen? Har jeg undertrykt jer? Har jeg afsagt uretfærdige domme? Har jeg taget imod bestikkelse fra nogen? I så fald vil jeg betale erstatning.”
4 „Nej,” svarede de, „du har hverken udnyttet eller undertrykt os på nogen måde, og du har aldrig på uretfærdig vis taget noget fra os.”
5 „Så Herren og hans salvede konge er i dag vidner på, at ingen har noget at anklage mig for?” spurgte Samuel.
„Ja, det er sandt,” svarede folket.
6 „Godt! Det var Herren, som udvalgte Moses og Aron,” fortsatte Samuel. „Ved deres hjælp førte han jeres forfædre ud af Egyptens land. 7 Jeg vil nu minde jer om, hvor mange gange Herren i sin nåde har reddet jer.
8 Da Jakobs efterkommere var slaver i Egypten, råbte de til Herren om hjælp, og han sendte Moses og Aron til dem for at føre dem ind i dette land. 9 Men det varede ikke længe, før folket havde glemt Herren, deres Gud, og derfor lod han kong Hatzors hærfører, Sisera, og filistrene og Moabs konge besejre dem. 10 Da råbte de igen til Herren og indrømmede, at de havde syndet ved at vende sig fra ham og i stedet dyrke afguderne Ba’al og Astarte. De bønfaldt Herren om hjælp. ‚Vi vil tilbede dig alene, hvis du bare vil frelse os fra vores fjender,’ lovede de. 11 Da sendte Herren Gideon, Barak, Jefta og Samson[a] for at frelse jer, og under deres ledelse havde I trygge kår.
12 Men så blev I bange for ammonitterkongen Nahash, og I kom til mig med jeres krav om at få en konge, der kunne regere over jer. Men Gud Herren var allerede jeres Konge—og det har han altid været. 13 Men her er den konge, I har bedt om at få. Herren har opfyldt jeres ønske og givet jer en konge.
14 Hvis I nu vil have ærefrygt for Herren og tjene ham, hvis I vil adlyde hans befalinger og ikke sætte jer op imod hans vilje, hvis både I og jeres konge vil følge Herren, jeres Gud, så vil det gå jer godt. 15 Men hvis I gør oprør imod ham og nægter at lytte til ham, vil han straffe jer, sådan som han straffede jeres forfædre.
16 Men se nu det under, som Herren vil gøre for øjnene af jer. 17 I ved, at det ikke regner her i hvedehøstens tid. Men i dag vil jeg bede Herren om at sende torden og regn for at I kan forstå, hvor stor en synd det var i Herrens øjne, at I krævede at få en konge.” 18 Så råbte Samuel til Herren, og Herren sendte torden og regn. Da blev folket grebet af frygt for Herren og for Samuel.
19 „Gå i forbøn for os, at vi ikke skal dø,” råbte de til Samuel. „Vi har syndet mange gange, og nu har vi også forlangt en konge.”
20 „Vær ikke bange, selvom I har begået denne synd,” beroligede Samuel dem. „Men følg nu Herren af hele jeres hjerte, så I ikke igen vender ham ryggen. 21 Gå ikke tilbage til de nytteløse afguder, som ikke kan hjælpe jer. 22 Fordi Herren er stor, står han fast på sit ord. Han vil ikke forkaste det folk, han har udvalgt som sit eget folk.
23 Hvad mig angår, så vil jeg ikke synde imod Herren ved at undlade at gå i forbøn for jer. Jeg vil også fortsat undervise jer om, hvad der er godt og ret. 24 I skal vise ærefrygt for Herren og tjene ham af hele jeres hjerte. Tænk på alle de store ting, han har gjort for jer. 25 Men hvis I fortsætter med at synde, vil både I og jeres konge blive udryddet.”

Samuel’s Farewell Speech
12 Samuel said to all Israel, “I have listened(A) to everything you said to me and have set a king(B) over you. 2 Now you have a king as your leader.(C) As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons(D) are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day. 3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed.(E) Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey(F) have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe(G) to make me shut my eyes? If I have done(H) any of these things, I will make it right.”(I)
4 “You have not cheated or oppressed us,” they replied. “You have not taken anything from anyone’s hand.”
5 Samuel said to them, “The Lord is witness(J) against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything(K) in my hand.(L)”
“He is witness,” they said.
6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought(M) your ancestors up out of Egypt. 7 Now then, stand(N) here, because I am going to confront(O) you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts(P) performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.
8 “After Jacob(Q) entered Egypt, they cried(R) to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent(S) Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.
9 “But they forgot(T) the Lord their God; so he sold them(U) into the hand of Sisera,(V) the commander of the army of Hazor,(W) and into the hands of the Philistines(X) and the king of Moab,(Y) who fought against them. 10 They cried(Z) out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken(AA) the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths.(AB) But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[a](AC) Barak,[b](AD) Jephthah(AE) and Samuel,[c](AF) and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.
12 “But when you saw that Nahash(AG) king(AH) of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule(AI) over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king(AJ) you have chosen, the one you asked(AK) for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear(AL) the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel(AM) against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against(AN) his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.
16 “Now then, stand still(AO) and see(AP) this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest(AQ) now? I will call(AR) on the Lord to send thunder(AS) and rain.(AT) And you will realize what an evil(AU) thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”
18 Then Samuel called on the Lord,(AV) and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe(AW) of the Lord and of Samuel.
19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray(AX) to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die,(AY) for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”
20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil;(AZ) yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless(BA) idols.(BB) They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake(BC) of his great name(BD) the Lord will not reject(BE) his people, because the Lord was pleased to make(BF) you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray(BG) for you. And I will teach(BH) you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear(BI) the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart;(BJ) consider(BK) what great(BL) things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist(BM) in doing evil, both you and your king(BN) will perish.”(BO)

2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.
3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the Lord, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.
4 And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.
5 And he said unto them, The Lord is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.
6 And Samuel said unto the people, It is the Lord that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the Lord of all the righteous acts of the Lord, which he did to you and to your fathers.
8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the Lord, then the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.
9 And when they forgat the Lord their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
10 And they cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
11 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.
12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the Lord your God was your king.
13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the Lord hath set a king over you.
14 If ye will fear the Lord, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the Lord your God:
15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord be against you, as it was against your fathers.
16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the Lord will do before your eyes.
17 Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the Lord, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking you a king.
18 So Samuel called unto the Lord; and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the Lord thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.
20 And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart;
21 And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
22 For the Lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the Lord to make you his people.
23 Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:
24 Only fear the Lord, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.
25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.
