The Birth of Samuel

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”

9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Hannaʼs gebed verhoord

1 In Rama, in de streek Suf, in het gebergte van Efraïm, woonde Elkana. Hij was de zoon van Jeroham, zijn grootvader heette Elihu en zijn overgrootvader Tochu. Tochu stamde af van Suf en behoorde tot de stam Efraïm. 2 Elkana had twee vrouwen, Hanna en Peninna. Peninna had kinderen, maar Hanna was tot nog toe kinderloos gebleven.

3 Elk jaar reisde Elkana met zijn gezin naar de tabernakel in Silo om de Here te aanbidden en offers te brengen. De dienstdoende priesters daar waren Hofni en Pinechas, de zonen van Eli. 4 Op de dag dat hij zijn offer bracht, gaf Elkana daarvan enkele delen aan Peninna en haar kinderen. 5 Maar Hanna gaf hij tweemaal zoveel, omdat hij erg veel van haar hield, ondanks haar kinderloosheid. 6 Peninna maakte Hanna het leven nog moeilijker door haar voortdurend te pesten met haar onvruchtbaarheid. 7 Zo ging het elk jaar wanneer Elkana op reis ging. Telkens lachte Peninna haar uit en plaagde haar onderweg. Dat maakte Hanna dan zo overstuur dat zij begon te huilen en geen hap door haar keel kon krijgen. 8 ‘Wat is er toch, Hanna?’ vroeg Elkana dan. ‘Waarom eet je niets en heb je zoʼn verdriet? Ben ik je dan niet meer waard dan tien zonen?’ 9 Nadat zij hadden gegeten, stond Hanna op en ging naar de tabernakel. De priester Eli zat op een bankje bij de ingang. 10 Hanna was vertwijfeld en huilde bittere tranen, terwijl zij tot de Here bad. 11 In haar gebed deed zij een belofte: ‘Och Here, luister toch naar mijn ellende, beantwoord mijn gebed en geef mij een zoon. Als U dat doet, dan beloof ik U dat ik hem aan U zal teruggeven. Hij zal voor zijn hele leven aan U toebehoren: daarom zal zijn haar nooit worden afgeknipt.’

12,13 Eli zag haar mond bewegen tijdens haar stil gebed. Maar omdat hij geen geluid hoorde, dacht hij dat zij dronken was. 14 ‘Hoe haalt u het in uw hoofd hier dronken binnen te komen!’ zei hij. ‘Ga eerst uw roes uitslapen.’ 15,16 ‘U vergist u, meneer!’ antwoordde Hanna onthutst. ‘Ik ben alleen vreselijk verdrietig en heb mijn hart bij de Here uitgestort. Ik had Hem vanwege mijn verdriet zoveel te vertellen! U moet echt niet denken dat ik dronken ben!’ 17 ‘In dat geval,’ meende Eli, ‘kunt u gerust zijn! De God van Israël zal uw gebed verhoren.’ 18 ‘Denk alstublieft nog eens aan mij!’ riep Hanna en ging weg. Vanaf dat moment begon zij weer te eten en zag zij er niet meer zo verdrietig uit.

19 Het hele gezin stond de volgende morgen vroeg op en ging naar de tabernakel om de Here nog eenmaal te aanbidden. Daarna gingen zij terug naar Rama en toen Elkana kort daarna gemeenschap had met Hanna, dacht de Here aan haar. 20 Hanna werd zwanger en bracht na verloop van tijd een zoon ter wereld. Zij noemde hem Samuël, ‘Want ik heb de Here om dit kind gevraagd,’ zo legde ze uit. 21,22 Het volgende jaar ging Elkana alleen met Peninna en haar kinderen naar de tabernakel in Silo. Hanna bleef thuis en zei tegen Elkana: ‘Als de baby geen borstvoeding meer nodig heeft, neem ik hem mee naar de tabernakel. Dan zal hij voor de Here verschijnen en daar voorgoed blijven.’ 23 ‘Doe maar wat jij goed vindt,’ zei Elkana. ‘Moge de wil van de Here worden gedaan.’ Zij bleef dus thuis tot het kind geen borstvoeding meer nodig had.

24 Toen nam zij de jongen—ondanks het feit dat hij nog erg klein was—mee naar de tabernakel van de Here in Silo. Als offer nam zij een driejarige stier, ruim twintig liter meel en wat wijn mee. 25 Nadat zij de stier had geofferd, ging zij met het kind naar Eli. 26 ‘Herinnert u zich mij nog?’ vroeg Hanna hem. ‘Ik ben de vrouw die hier destijds stond te bidden tot de Here! 27 Om dit kind heb ik toen gebeden en de Here heeft mijn gebed verhoord. 28 Daarom geef ik hem nu voor zijn hele leven aan de Here.’ En ze liet het kind daar achter voor de Here.

3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.

4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb.

6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb.

7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the Lord.

10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.

11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth.

13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.

16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her.

20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.

21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever.

23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the Lord establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh: and the child was young.

25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord.

27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

28 Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.

12 As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but (O)I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not regard your servant as (P)a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered, (Q)“Go in peace, and the God of Israel (R)grant your petition that you have made to him.” 18 And she said, (S)“Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman (T)went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at (U)Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord (V)remembered her. 20 And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the Lord.”[b]

Samuel Given to the Lord

21 The man Elkanah and all his house (W)went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord (X)and dwell there forever.” 23 (Y)Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; (Z)only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, (AA)she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull,[c] an ephah[d] of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to (AB)the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! (AC)As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed, (AD)and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”

(AE)And he worshiped the Lord there.
