The Birth of Samuel
1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)
17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”
18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)
19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”
Hannah Dedicates Samuel
21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]
23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Sa-mu-ên Làm Thẩm Phán Xét Xử Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên
1 Tại Ra-ma-tha-im của dòng họ Xu-phơ[a] thuộc vùng Ép-ra-im, có một người tên là Ên-ca-na. Ông này là con của ông Giê-rô-ham, cháu ông Ê-li-hu, chắt ông Tô-hu, và chít ông Xu-phơ, thuộc bộ tộc Ép-ra-im. 2 Ông Ên-ca-na có hai vợ; người vợ đầu tiên là An-ne, người vợ kế tên là Phê-ni-na. Bà Phê-ni-na có con, nhưng bà An-ne thì không.
3 Hằng năm, ông thường từ thành mình lên đền thờ tại Si-lô thờ phượng CHÚA Toàn Năng và dâng sinh tế cho Ngài. Thầy tế lễ của CHÚA tại đó là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a, hai con trai của ông Hê-li. 4 Một ngày kia ông Ên-ca-na dâng sinh tế. Theo lệ thường, sau khi dâng xong, ông chia thịt sinh tế ra cho vợ là bà Phê-ni-na, và cho hết thảy các con trai con gái bà, mỗi người một phần. 5 Dù ông yêu quí bà An-ne nhiều hơn, ông cũng chia cho bà An-ne chỉ một phần thôi[b] vì CHÚA không cho bà sanh con. 6 Bà Phê-ni-na, đối thủ của bà, tìm đủ cách chọc tức bà, để hạ nhục bà, vì CHÚA đã làm cho bà son sẻ. 7 Sự việc cứ tái diễn[c] năm này sang năm khác. Mỗi khi bà An-ne lên đền thờ CHÚA, bà Phê-ni-na cứ chọc tức bà đến nỗi bà khóc và chẳng thiết ăn. 8 Ông Ên-ca-na, chồng bà, hỏi bà: “An-ne, sao em lại khóc? Sao em không chịu ăn? Sao em buồn rầu như vậy? Đối với em, anh không quí hơn mười đứa con trai sao?”

9 Sau khi ăn uống xong tại Si-lô, bà An-ne đứng dậy[d] Thầy tế lễ Hê-li đang ngồi trên ghế, cạnh bên cửa đền thờ CHÚA. 10 Bà An-ne sầu khổ lắm. Bà vừa khóc vừa cầu nguyện tha thiết với CHÚA. 11 Bà hứa nguyện: “Lạy CHÚA Toàn Năng, xin Ngài đoái thương con đòi của Ngài! Xin Ngài nhìn thấy cảnh đau khổ của con và nhớ tới con. Xin Ngài đừng quên con đòi Ngài. Xin Ngài ban cho con đòi Ngài một đứa con trai, con nguyện dâng nó cho CHÚA trọn đời. Tóc nó sẽ không bao giờ bị cắt.”
12 Bà tiếp tục cầu khẩn thật lâu trước mặt CHÚA, nên ông Hê-li theo dõi miệng bà. 13 Ông chỉ thấy môi bà mấp máy, chớ chẳng nghe tiếng nào, vì bà An-ne cầu nguyện thầm trong lòng, nên ông tưởng bà say rượu. 14 Ông Hê-li bảo bà: “Chị còn say cho đến chừng nào? Chị về dã rượu đi.”
15 Bà An-ne thưa: “Thưa ông, tôi không say đâu. Tôi là một người đàn bà khốn khổ. Tôi không có uống rượu hoặc bia gì cả. Tôi chỉ dốc đổ lòng tôi ra trước mặt CHÚA. 16 Xin ông đừng coi tôi là hạng đàn bà hư hỏng. Tôi cầu nguyện lâu chừng ấy là vì tôi sầu khổ và buồn bực quá đỗi.”
17 Ông Hê-li đáp: “Chị an tâm về nhà. Cầu xin Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên ban cho chị điều chị cầu xin Ngài.” 18 Bà An-ne thưa: “Xin ông luôn nhớ đến tôi là phận hèn mọn.” Bà trở về, dùng bữa. Nét mặt bà không còn ưu sầu nữa.
Sa-mu-ên Ra Đời
19 Sáng hôm sau, ông Ên-ca-na và gia đình dậy sớm, sấp mình thờ phượng CHÚA, rồi trở về nhà mình tại Ra-ma.
Ông Ên-ca-na ăn ở với bà An-ne, vợ mình. CHÚA nhớ đến bà. 20 Bà An-ne thụ thai. Mãn kỳ thai nghén, bà sanh một con trai, đặt tên là Sa-mu-ên[e] và giải thích: “Tôi đã cầu xin CHÚA ban cho tôi một đứa con.”
21 Đến ngày ông Ên-ca-na và cả gia đình lên đền thờ dâng lên CHÚA sinh tế hằng năm cùng với lễ vật ông khấn nguyện. 22 Nhưng lần này, bà An-ne không đi. Bà nói với chồng: “Đợi khi nào con dứt sữa, em sẽ dẫn con lên trình diện CHÚA, rồi con sẽ ở lại đó suốt đời.” 23 Ông Ên-ca-na, chồng bà, đáp: “Em thấy điều gì phải thì làm. Em cứ ở nhà cho đến khi con thôi bú. Cầu xin CHÚA cho việc xảy ra y theo lời em hứa.”[f] Vậy, bà vợ ở lại nhà cho con bú cho đến khi nó dứt sữa.
24 Ngay sau khi con thôi bú, dù nó hãy còn nhỏ lắm, bà dẫn con lên đền thờ CHÚA tại Si-lô. Bà cùng với chồng đem theo một con bò đực ba tuổi[g] một bao bột khoảng chừng một ê-pha,[h] và một bầu rượu. 25 Họ làm thịt con bò dâng lên CHÚA[i] rồi dẫn con đến gặp ông Hê-li. 26 Bà nói: “Thưa ông, ông còn nhớ tôi không? Tôi chính là người đàn bà trước đây cầu khẩn CHÚA tại nơi này, cạnh bên ông. 27 Tôi cầu xin Ngài cho tôi đứa con này. CHÚA đã ban cho tôi điều tôi cầu xin Ngài. 28 Nay tôi xin dâng con tôi lại cho CHÚA. Nó thuộc về CHÚA trọn đời nó.”
Rồi cả gia đình[j] thờ phượng CHÚA.

2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the Lord, were there.
4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the Lord had shut up her womb.
6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb.
7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?
9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the Lord.
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore.
11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth.
13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.
16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.
18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.
19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her.
20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.
21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever.
23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the Lord establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.
24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh: and the child was young.
25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.
26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord.
27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
28 Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.
