⁴ But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, “Send^(A) the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn^(B) against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men?

²¹ Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went^(A) over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

¹⁹ Some of the tribe of Manasseh defected to David when he went with the Philistines to fight against Saul. (He and his men did not help the Philistines because, after consultation, their rulers sent him away. They said, “It will cost us our heads if he deserts to his master Saul.”)^(A)

⁸ “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world^(A) are more shrewd^(B) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.^(C)

⁶ So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag,^(A) and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since.
