Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’ 2 Samuel said, ‘How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me.’ And the Lord said, ‘Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.” 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for me the one whom I name to you.’ 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, ‘Do you come peaceably?’ 5 He said, ‘Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord; sanctify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.’ And he sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.’[a] 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’ 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, ‘Neither has the Lord chosen this one.’ 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The Lord has not chosen any of these.’ 11 Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?’ And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.’ And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.’ 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.’ 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.

Saül l'apprendra et me tuera.» L'Eternel dit: «Tu prendras une génisse avec toi et tu diras: ‘Je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel.’ 3 Tu inviteras Isaï au sacrifice. Je te préciserai ce que tu dois faire et tu désigneras par onction pour moi celui que je t’indiquerai.»
4 Samuel fit ce que l'Eternel avait dit et se rendit à Bethléhem. Les anciens de la ville accoururent effrayés à sa rencontre et demandèrent: «Ton arrivée annonce-t-elle quelque chose d'heureux?» 5 Il répondit: «Oui, je viens pour offrir un sacrifice à l'Eternel. Consacrez-vous et venez avec moi au sacrifice.» Il fit aussi consacrer Isaï et ses fils et les invita au sacrifice.
6 Lorsqu'ils entrèrent, il se dit, en voyant Eliab: «Certainement, celui que l'Eternel désigne par onction est ici devant lui.» 7 Mais l'Eternel dit à Samuel: «Ne prête pas attention à son apparence et à sa grande taille, car je l'ai rejeté. En effet, l’Eternel n’a pas le même regard que l’homme: l'homme regarde à ce qui frappe les yeux, mais l'Eternel regarde au cœur.» 8 Isaï appela Abinadab et le fit passer devant Samuel. Samuel dit: «L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.» 9 Isaï fit passer Shamma et Samuel dit: «L'Eternel n'a pas non plus choisi celui-ci.» 10 Isaï fit passer sept de ses fils devant Samuel et Samuel dit à Isaï: «L'Eternel n'a choisi aucun d'eux.» 11 Puis Samuel dit à Isaï: «Tous tes fils sont-ils là?» Il répondit: «Il reste encore le plus jeune, mais il garde les brebis.» Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: «Envoie quelqu’un le chercher, car nous ne prendrons pas place avant qu'il ne soit arrivé.» 12 Isaï envoya quelqu’un le chercher. Il était roux, avec de beaux yeux et une belle apparence. L'Eternel dit à Samuel: «Lève-toi, verse de l’huile sur lui, car c'est lui!» 13 Samuel prit la corne d'huile et le consacra par onction au milieu de ses frères. 5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(K) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(L) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(M) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(N)
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab(O) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah(P) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(Q) the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(R)
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he(S) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(T) features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(U) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(V) came powerfully upon David.(W) Samuel then went to Ramah.

A Man Born Blind Receives Sight
9 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’ 3 Jesus answered, ‘Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4 We[a] must work the works of him who sent me[b] while it is day; night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.’ 6 When he had said this, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva and spread the mud on the man’s eyes, 7 saying to him, ‘Go, wash in the pool of Siloam’ (which means Sent). The Pharisees Investigate the Healing
13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 Now it was a sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also began to ask him how he had received his sight. He said to them, ‘He put mud on my eyes. Then I washed, and now I see.’ 16 Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath.’ But others said, ‘How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?’ And they were divided. 17 So they said again to the blind man, ‘What do you say about him? It was your eyes he opened.’ He said, ‘He is a prophet.’
18 The Jews did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight 19 and asked them, ‘Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?’ 20 His parents answered, ‘We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but we do not know how it is that now he sees, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.’ 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus[c] to be the Messiah[d] would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, ‘He is of age; ask him.’
24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, ‘Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner.’ 25 He answered, ‘I do not know whether he is a sinner. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.’ 26 They said to him, ‘What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?’ 27 He answered them, ‘I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?’ 28 Then they reviled him, saying, ‘You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from.’ 30 The man answered, ‘Here is an astonishing thing! 35 Jesus heard that they had driven him out, and when he found him, he said, ‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’[e] 36 He answered, ‘And who is he, sir?[f] Tell me, so that I may believe in him.’ 37 Jesus said to him, ‘You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.’ 38 He said, ‘Lord,[g] I believe.’ And he worshipped him. 39 Jesus said, ‘I came into this world for judgement so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind.’ 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard this and said to him, ‘Surely we are not blind, are we?’ 41 Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would not have sin. Comment donc se fait-il qu’il voie maintenant?» 20 Ses parents leur répondirent: «Nous savons que c'est bien notre fils et qu'il est né aveugle, 21 mais nous ne savons pas comment il se fait qu'il voie maintenant, ni qui lui a ouvert les yeux. Interrogez-le lui-même, il est assez grand pour parler de ce qui le concerne.» 22 Ses parents dirent cela parce qu'ils avaient peur des chefs juifs. En effet, ceux-ci avaient déjà décidé d'exclure de la synagogue celui qui reconnaîtrait Jésus comme le Messie. 23 Voilà pourquoi ses parents dirent: «Il est assez grand, interrogez-le lui-même.»
24 Les pharisiens appelèrent une seconde fois l'homme qui avait été aveugle et lui dirent: «Rends gloire à Dieu! Nous savons que cet homme est un pécheur.» 25 Il répondit: «S'il est un pécheur, je n'en sais rien. Je sais une chose: c'est que j'étais aveugle et maintenant je vois.» 26 Ils lui dirent [de nouveau]: «Que t'a-t-il fait? Comment t'a-t-il ouvert les yeux?» 27 Il leur répondit: «Je vous l'ai déjà dit et vous n'avez pas écouté. Pourquoi voulez-vous l'entendre encore? Voulez-vous aussi devenir ses disciples?» 28 Ils l'insultèrent et dirent: «C'est toi qui es son disciple. Nous, nous sommes disciples de Moïse. 29 Nous savons que Dieu a parlé à Moïse, mais celui-ci, nous ne savons pas d'où il est.» 30 Cet homme leur répondit: «Voilà qui est étonnant: vous ne savez pas d'où il est, et pourtant il m'a ouvert les yeux! 31 Nous savons que Dieu n'exauce pas les pécheurs mais qu’en revanche, si quelqu'un l'honore et fait sa volonté, il l'exauce. 32 Jamais encore on n'a entendu dire que quelqu'un ait ouvert les yeux d'un aveugle-né. 33 Si cet homme ne venait pas de Dieu, il ne pourrait rien faire.» 34 Ils lui répondirent: «Tu es né tout entier dans le péché et tu nous enseignes!» Et ils le chassèrent.
35 Jésus apprit qu'ils l'avaient chassé. L’ayant rencontré, il [lui] dit: «Crois-tu au Fils de Dieu?» 36 Il répondit: «Et qui est-il, Seigneur, afin que je croie en lui?» 37 «Tu l'as vu, lui dit Jésus, et celui qui te parle, c'est lui.» 38 Alors il dit: «Je crois, Seigneur.» Et il se prosterna devant lui.
39 Puis Jésus dit: «Je suis venu dans ce monde pour un jugement, pour que ceux qui ne voient pas voient et pour que ceux qui voient deviennent aveugles.» 40 Quelques pharisiens qui étaient avec lui entendirent ces paroles et lui dirent: «Nous aussi, sommes-nous aveugles?» 41 Jésus leur répondit: «Si vous étiez aveugles, vous n'auriez pas de péché. Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

He is of age; he will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders,(T) who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out(U) of the synagogue.(V) 23 That was why his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.”(W)
24 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. “Give glory to God by telling the truth,”(X) they said. “We know this man is a sinner.”(Y)
25 He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”
26 Then they asked him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”
27 He answered, “I have told you already(Z) and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples too?”
28 Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! We are disciples of Moses!(AA) 29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don’t even know where he comes from.”(AB)
30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly person who does his will.(AC) 32 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. 33 If this man were not from God,(AD) he could do nothing.”
34 To this they replied, “You were steeped in sin at birth;(AE) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out.(AF)
Spiritual Blindness
35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, “Do you believe(AG) in the Son of Man?”(AH)
36 “Who is he, sir?” the man asked. “Tell me so that I may believe in him.”(AI)
37 Jesus said, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.”(AJ)
38 Then the man said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him.(AK)
39 Jesus said,[a] “For judgment(AL) I have come into this world,(AM) so that the blind will see(AN) and those who see will become blind.”(AO)
40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?”(AP)
41 Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.(AQ)
