Elías huye de Jezabel
19 Acab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho y cómo[a] había matado a espada a todos los profetas(A). 2 Entonces Jezabel envió un mensajero a Elías, diciendo: «Así me hagan los dioses y aun me añadan(B), si mañana a estas horas yo no he puesto tu vida como la vida de uno de ellos». 3 Elías tuvo miedo[b], y se levantó y se fue para salvar su vida; y vino a Beerseba(C) de Judá y dejó allí a su criado, 4 y anduvo por el desierto un día de camino, y vino y se sentó bajo un arbusto[c]; pidió morirse(D) y dijo: «Basta ya, Señor, toma mi vida porque yo no soy mejor que mis padres». 5 Y acostándose bajo el arbusto, se durmió; pero un ángel lo tocó(E) y le dijo: «Levántate, come». 6 Entonces vio que en su cabecera había una torta cocida sobre piedras calientes y una vasija de agua. Comió y bebió, y volvió a acostarse. 7 El ángel del Señor volvió por segunda vez, lo tocó y le dijo: «Levántate, come, porque es muy largo el camino para ti». 8 Se levantó, pues, y comió y bebió, y con la fuerza de aquella comida caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches(F) hasta Horeb, el monte de Dios(G).
Elías se encuentra con Dios
9 Allí entró en una cueva y pasó en ella la noche; y vino a él la palabra del Señor(H), y Él le dijo: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías?». 10 Y él respondió: «He tenido mucho celo por el Señor(I), Dios de los ejércitos; porque los israelitas han abandonado Tu pacto, han derribado Tus altares y han matado a espada a Tus profetas. He quedado yo solo(J) y buscan mi vida para quitármela(K)».
11 Entonces el Señor le dijo: «Sal y ponte en el monte delante del Señor(L)». En ese momento el Señor pasaba, y un grande y poderoso viento(M) destrozaba los montes y quebraba las peñas delante del Señor; pero el Señor no estaba en el viento. Después del viento, un terremoto; pero el Señor no estaba en el terremoto. 12 Después del terremoto, un fuego; pero el Señor no estaba en el fuego. Y después del fuego, el susurro de una brisa apacible(N). 13 Cuando Elías lo oyó, se cubrió el rostro(O) con su manto, y salió y se puso a la entrada de la cueva. Y una voz vino a él y le preguntó: «¿Qué haces aquí, Elías(P)?». 14 Entonces él respondió: «He tenido mucho celo por el Señor, Dios de los ejércitos; porque los israelitas han abandonado Tu pacto, han derribado Tus altares y han matado a espada a Tus profetas. He quedado yo solo y buscan mi vida para quitármela(Q)».
15 Y el Señor le dijo: «Ve, regresa por tu camino al desierto de Damasco y cuando hayas llegado, ungirás a Hazael(R) por rey sobre Aram; 16 y a Jehú, hijo de Nimsi(S), ungirás por rey sobre Israel; y a Eliseo, hijo de Safat(T) de Abel Mehola, ungirás por profeta en tu lugar. 17 Al que escape de la espada de Hazael(U), Jehú lo matará(V), y al que escape de la espada de Jehú, Eliseo lo matará. 18 Pero dejaré 7,000 en Israel, todas las rodillas que no se han doblado ante Baal(W) y toda boca que no lo ha besado(X)».

19 Elías partió de allí y encontró a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, que estaba arando con doce yuntas de bueyes delante de él, y él estaba con la última. Elías pasó adonde él estaba y le echó su manto encima(Y). 20 Dejando él los bueyes, corrió tras Elías, y dijo: «Permítame besar a mi padre y a mi madre, entonces lo seguiré(Z)». Y él le dijo: «Ve, vuélvete, pues, ¿qué te he hecho yo?». 21 Entonces se volvió, dejando de seguirlo, tomó un par de bueyes y los sacrificó, y con los aparejos de los bueyes coció su carne(AA), y la dio a la gente y ellos comieron. Después se levantó y fue tras Elías, y le servía.

Elías se escapa de Jezabel
19 Ahab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho y cómo había matado a todos los profetas de Baal. 2 Entonces Jezabel mandó a un mensajero a decirle a Elías: «Te voy a matar como tú hiciste con los profetas de Baal. Si mañana a esta hora no estás muerto, que los dioses me maten a mí».
3 Cuando Elías supo esto, se asustó tanto que huyó a Beerseba, en el territorio de Judá. Dejó a su ayudante en Jezreel 4 y anduvo por un día en el desierto. Después se sentó debajo de un arbusto, y estaba tan triste que se quería morir. Le decía a Dios: «¡Dios, ya no aguanto más! Quítame la vida, pues no soy mejor que mis antepasados».
5 Después se acostó debajo del arbusto y se quedó dormido. Al rato un ángel lo tocó y le dijo: «Levántate y come».
6 Elías miró y encontró cerca de su cabeza un pan recién horneado, y una jarra de agua. Así que comió, bebió y se acostó de nuevo.
7 El ángel de Dios fue por segunda vez, tocó a Elías y le dijo: «Levántate y come, pues el viaje será largo y pesado».
8 Entonces Elías se levantó, comió y bebió. Esa comida le dio fuerzas para viajar durante cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, hasta que llegó al monte Horeb, que es el monte de Dios. 9 Allí encontró una cueva y se quedó a pasar la noche. Pero Dios le habló de nuevo y le preguntó:
—¿Qué estás haciendo acá, Elías?
10 Él contestó:
—Yo me he preocupado mucho por obedecerte, pues tú eres el Dios todopoderoso. El pueblo de Israel ha abandonado el pacto que tiene contigo, ha destruido tus altares y ha matado a tus profetas. Sólo yo estoy vivo, pero me están buscando para matarme.
11 Entonces Dios le dijo:
—Sal afuera de la cueva y párate delante de mí, en la montaña.
En ese momento Dios pasó por ahí, y de inmediato sopló un viento fuerte que estremeció la montaña, y las piedras se hicieron pedazos. Pero Dios no estaba en el viento. Después del viento hubo un terremoto. Pero Dios tampoco estaba en el terremoto. 12 Después del terremoto hubo un fuego. Pero Dios tampoco estaba en el fuego. Después del fuego se oyó el ruido delicado del silencio. 13 Cuando Elías lo escuchó, se tapó la cara con su capa, salió y se quedó a la entrada de la cueva. En ese momento Elías escuchó una voz que le preguntó:
—¿Qué estás haciendo aquí, Elías?
14 Él contestó:
—Yo me he esforzado mucho por obedecerte, pues tú eres el Dios todopoderoso. El pueblo de Israel ha abandonado el pacto que tiene contigo, ha destruido tus altares y ha matado a tus profetas. Sólo yo estoy vivo, pero me están buscando para matarme.
15 Entonces Dios le dijo:
—Anda, regresa por el mismo camino hasta el desierto de Damasco. Cuando llegues, nombra a Hazael como rey de Siria, 16 y a Jehú hijo de Nimsí, como rey de Israel. También nombra como profeta, en lugar tuyo, a Eliseo hijo de Safat, del pueblo de Abel-meholá. 17 De esta manera, al israelita que escape de morir bajo la espada de Hazael, lo matará Jehú. Y a quien no pueda matar Jehú, lo matará Eliseo. 18 Pero debes saber que siete mil personas no se arrodillaron delante de Baal ni lo besaron; a ellos yo los voy a dejar con vida.
Elías llama a Eliseo
19 Elías se fue de allí y encontró a Eliseo hijo de Safat. Eliseo estaba arando su tierra con doce pares de bueyes. Él iba guiando la última pareja de bueyes. Cuando Eliseo pasó por donde estaba Elías, éste le puso su capa encima a Eliseo, y de esta manera le indicó que él sería profeta en lugar de él.
20 Eliseo dejó los bueyes, corrió detrás de Elías y le dijo:
—Déjame darle un beso a mi padre y a mi madre para despedirme, y después te seguiré.
Elías le contestó:
—Está bien, ve a despedirte. Pero recuerda lo que he hecho contigo.
21 Eliseo dejó a Elías, y fue a buscar dos toros suyos y los mató. Tomó la madera del yugo que unía a los toros, y con ella hizo fuego para asar la carne. Eliseo invitó a su gente a comer la carne asada, y luego se fue a buscar a Elías. Desde ese momento, Eliseo fue su ayudante.

Elijah runs away
19 King Ahab told Jezebel about everything that Elijah had done. He told her how Elijah had killed all Baal's prophets with a sword. 2 So Jezebel sent someone with this message to Elijah: ‘By this time tomorrow, I will make sure that you are dead, the same as Baal's prophets! If I do not do that, I pray that the gods will kill me instead.’
3 Elijah became very afraid. He ran away to save his life. He arrived at Beersheba in Judah.[a] He left his servant there. 4 Then Elijah went into the desert by himself. He travelled for about a day. He found a small tree there and he sat down under it. He prayed that he might die. He said, ‘Lord, I have had enough trouble! Take my life from me. It is no better for me here than to be with my dead ancestors.’ 5 Then he lay down under the tree and he slept. Suddenly, an angel came and touched him. The angel said, ‘Get up and eat something.’ 6 When Elijah looked, he saw some bread near his head. Someone had baked it on a fire. There was also a jar of water. So he ate the bread and he drank the water. Then he lay down again to sleep. 7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time. He touched Elijah and he said, ‘Get up and eat more food. Then you will be strong enough to go on a long journey.’ 8 So Elijah got up. He ate the food and he drank the water. The meal made him strong enough to travel for 40 days and 40 nights. He travelled to Sinai, the mountain of God.[b]
The Lord appears to Elijah
9 Elijah went into a cave on Sinai mountain and he stayed there all night. Suddenly, the Lord spoke to Elijah. He asked Elijah, ‘Elijah, why have you come here?’ 10 Elijah replied, ‘The Israelites have turned away from the covenant that you made with them. They have destroyed your altars.[c] They have killed your prophets with swords. But I have always served the Lord God Almighty faithfully. Now I am the only prophet that is still alive and they are trying to kill me too.’ 11 The Lord said, ‘Go out from the cave and stand on the mountain, in front of me. I, the Lord, will pass in front of you.’
Then a very strong wind broke the mountain apart. It broke the rocks into pieces as the Lord came near. But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake, there was a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire, there was a very quiet voice. 13 When Elijah heard that, he covered his face with his robe. He went out and he stood at the entrance of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘Elijah, why have you come here?’[d] 14 Elijah said, ‘The Israelites have turned away from the covenant that you made with them. They have destroyed your altars. They have killed your prophets with swords. But I have always served the Lord God Almighty faithfully. Now I am the only prophet that is still alive and they are trying to kill me too.’
15 The Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go back again along the way that you came. Go to the desert which is near Damascus. When you arrive there, anoint Hazael to make him king of Syria. 16 You must also anoint Nimshi's grandson Jehu to make him king of Israel. Then anoint Shapat's son Elisha from Abel Meholah to be my prophet after you. 17 Jehu's army will kill anyone that Hazael's army does not kill. Then Elisha will kill anyone who escapes from Jehu. 18 But remember this: I still have 7,000 people in Israel who have not worshipped Baal. They have not kissed his idols.’
Elisha becomes Elijah's servant
19 Elijah went away from Sinai. He found Shaphat's son, Elisha. Elisha was ploughing a field with 12 pairs of oxen. Elisha himself was using the 12th pair of oxen to plough. Elijah went to Elisha and he threw his robe over him.[e] 20 So Elisha left his oxen in the field and he ran after Elijah.
Elisha said, ‘Let me go home first to kiss my father and my mother and say “goodbye”. Then I will come with you.’ Elijah replied, ‘Yes, go back home. But do not forget about what I have done to you.’
21 So Elisha went back to his field. He took his pair of oxen and he killed them as a sacrifice. He burned wood from the plough to cook the meat. He gave the meat to the people who were there and they ate it. Then he left home to go with Elijah and to become his helper.

- 19:8 Sinai was the mountain where God met Moses. See Exodus 3:1. Moses, Elijah and Jesus all lived without food for 40 days and 40 nights. See Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4.
- 19:10 The covenant that they turned away from is in Exodus 20:3. It says, ‘You must not have any other gods except me.’ One of the altars that they destroyed was in Carmel, 1 Kings 18:30.
- 19:13 The question in verse 13 is the same as the question in verse 9. Elijah's answer is also the same.
- 19:19 Elijah's robe was a prophet's robe. He put it on Elisha to show him that he would now be a prophet.

Elijah Flees to Horeb
19 Now Ahab told Jezebel(A) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed(B) all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,(C) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”(D)
3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran(E) for his life.(F) When he came to Beersheba(G) in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush,(H) sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life;(I) I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.(J)
All at once an angel(K) touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty(L) days and forty nights until he reached Horeb,(M) the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave(N) and spent the night.
The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”(O)
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous(P) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,(Q) torn down your altars,(R) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(S) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain(T) in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”(U)
Then a great and powerful wind(V) tore the mountains apart and shattered(W) the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire,(X) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.(Y) 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face(Z) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(AA) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael(AB) king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint(AC) Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha(AD) son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah(AE) to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael,(AF) and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.(AG) 18 Yet I reserve(AH) seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed(AI) him.”
The Call of Elisha
19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak(AJ) around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,”(AK) he said, “and then I will come with you.”
“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen(AL) and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.(AM)
