Las mujeres de Salomón

11 Ahora bien, además de casarse con la hija del faraón, el rey Salomón amó a muchas mujeres moabitas, amonitas, edomitas, sidonias e hititas, todas ellas mujeres extranjeras 2 que procedían de naciones de las cuales el Señor había dicho a los israelitas: «No se unan a ellas ni ellas a ustedes, porque de seguro les desviarán el corazón para que sigan a otros dioses». Con tales mujeres se unió Salomón y decidió amarlas. 3 Tuvo setecientas esposas que eran princesas y trescientas concubinas;[a] todas estas mujeres hicieron que se desviara su corazón. 4 En efecto, cuando Salomón llegó a viejo, sus mujeres le pervirtieron el corazón de modo que él siguió a otros dioses y no siempre fue fiel al Señor su Dios como lo había sido su padre[b] David. 5 Por el contrario, Salomón siguió a Astarté, diosa de los sidonios, y a Moloc,[c] el detestable dios de los amonitas. 6 Así que Salomón actuó mal ante el Señor y no permaneció fiel a él como su padre David.

7 Fue en esa época cuando, en una montaña al este de Jerusalén, Salomón edificó un altar pagano para Quemós, el detestable dios de Moab, y otro para Moloc, el despreciable dios de los amonitas. 8 Lo mismo hizo en favor de sus mujeres extranjeras, para que estas pudieran quemar incienso y ofrecer sacrificios a sus dioses.

9 Entonces el Señor, Dios de Israel, se enojó con Salomón porque su corazón se había apartado de él, a pesar de que en dos ocasiones se le había aparecido 10 y le había prohibido que siguiera a otros dioses. Como Salomón no había cumplido esa orden, 11 el Señor le dijo: «Ya que procedes de este modo, y no has cumplido con mi pacto ni con los estatutos que te he ordenado, puedes estar seguro de que te quitaré el reino y se lo daré a uno de tus siervos. 12 No obstante, por consideración a tu padre David no lo haré mientras tú vivas, sino que lo arrancaré de la mano de tu hijo. 13 Y a este, también por consideración a mi siervo David y a Jerusalén, no le quitaré todo el reino, sino que le dejaré una sola tribu, la cual ya he escogido».

Los adversarios de Salomón

14 Por lo tanto, el Señor hizo que Hadad el edomita, que pertenecía a la familia real de Edom, surgiera como adversario de Salomón. 15 Ahora bien, durante la guerra entre David y los edomitas, Joab, el comandante del ejército, había ido a enterrar a los muertos de Israel y había aprovechado la ocasión para matar a todos los hombres de Edom. 16 Joab y los israelitas que estaban con él se quedaron allí seis meses, hasta que exterminaron a todos los varones edomitas. 17 Pero Hadad, que entonces era apenas un muchacho, huyó a Egipto con algunos oficiales edomitas que habían estado al servicio de su padre. 18 Partieron de Madián y llegaron a Parán, donde se les unieron unos hombres de ese lugar. De allí siguieron hacia Egipto y se presentaron ante el faraón, rey del país, quien regaló a Hadad una casa y se encargó de darle sustento y tierras.

19 Hadad agradó tanto al faraón, que este le dio por esposa a su cuñada, una hermana de la reina Tapenés. 20 La hermana de Tapenés dio a luz un hijo al que llamó Guenubat y Tapenés lo educó en el palacio real. De modo que Guenubat creció junto con los hijos del faraón.

21 Mientras Hadad estaba en Egipto, se enteró de que ya habían muerto David y Joab, comandante del ejército. Entonces Hadad dijo al faraón:

—Déjeme usted regresar a mi país.

22 —¿Y por qué quieres regresar a tu país? —preguntó el faraón—. ¿Acaso te falta algo aquí?

—No —respondió Hadad—, ¡pero de todos modos déjeme ir!

23 Dios también incitó a Rezón, hijo de Eliadá, para que fuera adversario de Salomón. Rezón, que había huido de su amo Hadad Ezer, rey de Sobá, 24 formó una banda de rebeldes y se convirtió en su líder. Cuando David destruyó a los arameos, los rebeldes fueron a Damasco y allí establecieron su gobierno. 25 Así fue como Rezón llegó a ser rey de Aram. Mientras vivió Salomón, Rezón aborreció a Israel y fue su adversario, de modo que agravó el daño causado por Hadad.

Jeroboán se rebela contra Salomón

26 También se rebeló contra el rey Salomón uno de sus funcionarios, llamado Jeroboán, hijo de Nabat. Este Jeroboán era efrateo, oriundo de Seredá; su madre se llamaba Zerúa y era viuda.

27 La rebelión de Jeroboán tuvo lugar cuando Salomón estaba construyendo los terraplenes[d] para cerrar la brecha en el muro de la Ciudad de David, su padre. 28 Jeroboán se había ganado el respeto de todos, de modo que cuando Salomón vio su buen desempeño lo puso a supervisar todo el trabajo forzado que se realizaba entre los descendientes de José.

29 Un día en que Jeroboán salía de Jerusalén, se encontró en el camino con el profeta Ahías de Siló, quien llevaba puesto un manto nuevo. Los dos estaban solos en el campo. 30 Entonces Ahías tomó el manto nuevo que llevaba puesto y, rasgándolo en doce pedazos, 31 dijo a Jeroboán: «Toma diez pedazos para ti, porque así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Ahora voy a arrancarle de la mano a Salomón el reino y a ti te voy a dar diez tribus. 32 A él le dejaré una sola tribu, y esto por consideración a mi siervo David y a Jerusalén, la ciudad que he escogido entre todas las tribus de Israel. 33 Voy a hacerlo así porque me han abandonado y adoran a Astarté, diosa de los sidonios, a Quemós, dios de los moabitas, y a Moloc, dios de los amonitas. No han seguido mis caminos, no han hecho lo que me agrada ni han cumplido mis estatutos y leyes como lo hizo David, su padre.

34 »”Sin embargo, no le quitaré todo el reino a Salomón, sino que lo dejaré gobernar todos los días de su vida, por consideración a David mi siervo, a quien escogí y quien cumplió mis mandamientos y estatutos. 35 Le quitaré el reino a su hijo y te daré a ti diez tribus. 36 Pero a su hijo le dejaré una sola tribu para que en Jerusalén, la ciudad donde decidí poner mi Nombre, la lámpara de mi siervo David se mantenga siempre encendida delante de mí. 37 En lo que a ti atañe, yo te haré rey de Israel y extenderás tu reino a tu gusto. 38 Si haces todo lo que te ordeno, sigues mis caminos y haces lo que me agrada, cumpliendo mis estatutos y mandamientos como lo hizo David mi siervo, estaré contigo. Estableceré para ti una dinastía tan firme como la que establecí para David,[e] y te daré Israel. 39 Así que haré sufrir a la descendencia de David, aunque no para siempre”».

40 Salomón, por su parte, intentó matar a Jeroboán, pero este huyó a Egipto y se quedó allí, bajo la protección del rey Sisac, hasta la muerte de Salomón.

Muerte de Salomón(A)

41 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Salomón, y su sabiduría y todo lo que hizo, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de Salomón, 42 quien durante cuarenta años reinó en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel. 43 Cuando murió, fue sepultado en la Ciudad de David, su padre, y su hijo Roboán lo sucedió en el trono.

Apostasía y dificultades de Salomón

11 Pero el rey Salomón amó, además de la hija de Faraón, a muchas mujeres extranjeras;(A) a las de Moab, a las de Amón, a las de Edom, a las de Sidón, y a las heteas; 2 gentes de las cuales Jehová había dicho a los hijos de Israel: No os llegaréis a ellas, ni ellas se llegarán a vosotros; porque ciertamente harán inclinar vuestros corazones tras sus dioses.(B) A estas, pues, se juntó Salomón con amor. 3 Y tuvo setecientas mujeres reinas y trescientas concubinas; y sus mujeres desviaron su corazón. 4 Y cuando Salomón era ya viejo, sus mujeres inclinaron su corazón tras dioses ajenos, y su corazón no era perfecto con Jehová su Dios, como el corazón de su padre David. 5 Porque Salomón siguió a Astoret, diosa de los sidonios, y a Milcom, ídolo abominable de los amonitas. 6 E hizo Salomón lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y no siguió cumplidamente a Jehová como David su padre. 7 Entonces edificó Salomón un lugar alto a Quemos, ídolo abominable de Moab, en el monte que está enfrente de Jerusalén, y a Moloc, ídolo abominable de los hijos de Amón. 8 Así hizo para todas sus mujeres extranjeras, las cuales quemaban incienso y ofrecían sacrificios a sus dioses.

9 Y se enojó Jehová contra Salomón, por cuanto su corazón se había apartado de Jehová Dios de Israel, que se le había aparecido dos veces, 10 y le había mandado acerca de esto, que no siguiese a dioses ajenos; mas él no guardó lo que le mandó Jehová. 11 Y dijo Jehová a Salomón: Por cuanto ha habido esto en ti, y no has guardado mi pacto y mis estatutos que yo te mandé, romperé de ti el reino, y lo entregaré a tu siervo. 12 Sin embargo, no lo haré en tus días, por amor a David tu padre; lo romperé de la mano de tu hijo. 13 Pero no romperé todo el reino, sino que daré una tribu a tu hijo, por amor a David mi siervo, y por amor a Jerusalén, la cual yo he elegido.

14 Y Jehová suscitó un adversario a Salomón: Hadad edomita, de sangre real, el cual estaba en Edom. 15 Porque cuando David estaba en Edom, y subió Joab el general del ejército a enterrar los muertos, y mató a todos los varones de Edom 16 (porque seis meses habitó allí Joab, y todo Israel, hasta que hubo acabado con todo el sexo masculino en Edom), 17 Hadad huyó, y con él algunos varones edomitas de los siervos de su padre, y se fue a Egipto; era entonces Hadad muchacho pequeño. 18 Y se levantaron de Madián, y vinieron a Parán; y tomando consigo hombres de Parán, vinieron a Egipto, a Faraón rey de Egipto, el cual les dio casa y les señaló alimentos, y aun les dio tierra. 19 Y halló Hadad gran favor delante de Faraón, el cual le dio por mujer la hermana de su esposa, la hermana de la reina Tahpenes. 20 Y la hermana de Tahpenes le dio a luz su hijo Genubat, al cual destetó Tahpenes en casa de Faraón; y estaba Genubat en casa de Faraón entre los hijos de Faraón. 21 Y oyendo Hadad en Egipto que David había dormido con sus padres, y que era muerto Joab general del ejército, Hadad dijo a Faraón: Déjame ir a mi tierra. 22 Faraón le respondió: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué te falta conmigo, que procuras irte a tu tierra? Él respondió: Nada; con todo, te ruego que me dejes ir.

23 Dios también levantó por adversario contra Salomón a Rezón hijo de Eliada, el cual había huido de su amo Hadad-ezer, rey de Soba. 24 Y había juntado gente contra él, y se había hecho capitán de una compañía, cuando David deshizo a los de Soba. Después fueron a Damasco y habitaron allí, y le hicieron rey en Damasco. 25 Y fue adversario de Israel todos los días de Salomón; y fue otro mal con el de Hadad, porque aborreció a Israel, y reinó sobre Siria.

26 También Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, efrateo de Sereda, siervo de Salomón, cuya madre se llamaba Zerúa, la cual era viuda, alzó su mano contra el rey. 27 La causa por la cual este alzó su mano contra el rey fue esta: Salomón, edificando a Milo, cerró el portillo de la ciudad de David su padre. 28 Y este varón Jeroboam era valiente y esforzado; y viendo Salomón al joven que era hombre activo, le encomendó todo el cargo de la casa de José. 29 Aconteció, pues, en aquel tiempo, que saliendo Jeroboam de Jerusalén, le encontró en el camino el profeta Ahías silonita, y este estaba cubierto con una capa nueva; y estaban ellos dos solos en el campo. 30 Y tomando Ahías la capa nueva que tenía sobre sí, la rompió en doce pedazos, 31 y dijo a Jeroboam: Toma para ti los diez pedazos; porque así dijo Jehová Dios de Israel: He aquí que yo rompo el reino de la mano de Salomón, y a ti te daré diez tribus; 32 y él tendrá una tribu por amor a David mi siervo, y por amor a Jerusalén, ciudad que yo he elegido de todas las tribus de Israel; 33 por cuanto me han dejado, y han adorado a Astoret diosa de los sidonios, a Quemos dios de Moab, y a Moloc dios de los hijos de Amón; y no han andado en mis caminos para hacer lo recto delante de mis ojos, y mis estatutos y mis decretos, como hizo David su padre. 34 Pero no quitaré nada del reino de sus manos, sino que lo retendré por rey todos los días de su vida, por amor a David mi siervo, al cual yo elegí, y quien guardó mis mandamientos y mis estatutos. 35 Pero quitaré el reino de la mano de su hijo, y lo daré a ti, las diez tribus. 36 Y a su hijo daré una tribu, para que mi siervo David tenga lámpara todos los días delante de mí en Jerusalén, ciudad que yo me elegí para poner en ella mi nombre. 37 Yo, pues, te tomaré a ti, y tú reinarás en todas las cosas que deseare tu alma, y serás rey sobre Israel. 38 Y si prestares oído a todas las cosas que te mandare, y anduvieres en mis caminos, e hicieres lo recto delante de mis ojos, guardando mis estatutos y mis mandamientos, como hizo David mi siervo, yo estaré contigo y te edificaré casa firme, como la edifiqué a David, y yo te entregaré a Israel. 39 Y yo afligiré a la descendencia de David a causa de esto, mas no para siempre. 40 Por esto Salomón procuró matar a Jeroboam, pero Jeroboam se levantó y huyó a Egipto, a Sisac rey de Egipto, y estuvo en Egipto hasta la muerte de Salomón.

Muerte de Salomón

41 Los demás hechos de Salomón, y todo lo que hizo, y su sabiduría, ¿no está escrito en el libro de los hechos de Salomón? 42 Los días que Salomón reinó en Jerusalén sobre todo Israel fueron cuarenta años. 43 Y durmió Salomón con sus padres, y fue sepultado en la ciudad de su padre David; y reinó en su lugar Roboam su hijo.

The Lord punishes King Solomon

11 Solomon loved Pharaoh's daughter and many other foreign women. Those women were Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 The Lord had warned the Israelites about these nations. He said, ‘You must not marry people from these nations. If you do, they will cause you to worship their own gods.’ But Solomon did love these foreign women and he married them.

3 Solomon had 700 royal wives. He also had 300 slave wives.[a] His wives caused him to turn away from the Lord. 4 When Solomon became old, his wives caused him to serve other gods. Solomon no longer completely loved the Lord his God as his father David had done.

5 Solomon worshipped Ashtoreth, the female god of the Sidonian people. He also worshipped Molech, the wicked god of the Ammonite people. 6 As a result, Solomon did things that the Lord said were evil. He did not serve the Lord faithfully as his father David had done. 7 On a hill east of Jerusalem Solomon built a place to worship false gods. He worshipped Chemosh, the wicked god of the Moabite people, and Molech, the wicked god of the Ammonite people. 8 Solomon also built places where his foreign wives could worship their gods. They burned incense and they offered sacrifices to their own gods in these places.

9 So the Lord became angry with Solomon. Solomon had turned away from the Lord, Israel's God, who had appeared to Solomon twice. 10 He had warned Solomon that he must not serve other gods. But Solomon did not obey the Lord's command. 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, ‘I see the things that you have chosen to do. You have not obeyed my covenant and the laws that I commanded you to obey. So I will take the kingdom away from you. One of your servants will rule the kingdom instead of you. 12 But I will not do this while you are alive, because your father David was faithful to me. Instead, I will take the kingdom away from your son. 13 But I will not take away the whole kingdom from him. I will leave one tribe for him to rule as king.[b] I will do this because King David served me faithfully, and because I have chosen Jerusalem as my special city.’

Solomon's enemies

14 The Lord brought an enemy to attack Solomon. He was Hadad who came from Edom.[c] Hadad belonged to the king of Edom's family. 15 When David was king, he had fought against Edom's people. Joab, the leader of David's army, had gone to Edom to bury the dead Israelite soldiers. At that time, Joab killed all the men in Edom.[d] 16 Joab and Israel's army stayed in Edom for six months. During that time, they killed all the men in Edom. 17 Hadad was a small boy at that time. He escaped from Edom with some of his father's officers. They went towards Egypt. 18 They went from Midian as far as Paran. They took some men from Paran and they all went to Egypt. They went to Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh gave Hadad a house to live in and food to eat. He also gave Hadad some land. 19 Pharaoh was very pleased with Hadad, so he gave Hadad a wife. She was the sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes. 20 Tahpenes's sister gave birth to Hadad's son, called Genubath. Queen Tahpenes took care of Genubath in the king's palace. Genubath lived there with Pharaoh's own children.

21 While Hadad was living in Egypt, he heard the news that King David had died. Joab, the leader of David's army, was also dead by this time. So Hadad said to Pharaoh, ‘Please let me return to my own country.’ 22 Pharaoh asked him, ‘Why do you want to return to your own country? Is there anything that you do not have here?’ Hadad replied, ‘There is nothing wrong, but please let me go.’

23 God also brought another enemy to attack Solomon. He was Eliada's son Rezon. He had run away from his master, Hadadezer, the king of Zobah. 24 After David had destroyed Hadadezer's army, Rezon became the leader of a group of bad men. Rezon went to Damascus with his men, and Rezon became ruler of the city.[e] 25 Rezon was Israel's enemy all the time that Solomon was alive. He caused trouble for Solomon, as Hadad also did. Rezon ruled in Syria and he hated the Israelite people.

26 Nebat's son Jeroboam was one of Solomon's officers. He came from Zeredah in Ephraim.[f] His mother was a widow. Her name was Zeruah. Jeroboam turned against King Solomon. 27 This is what happened: Solomon had built the Millo. He had also mended the walls of the City of David his father. 28 Jeroboam was a strong young man. Solomon saw that he did his work very well. So he made Jeroboam the leader of the workers who belonged to Joseph's tribe.

29 During that time, Jeroboam travelled out from Jerusalem. A prophet, Ahijah, met him on the road. They were alone in the country. Ahijah came from Shiloh. He was wearing a new coat. 30 Ahijah took off his new coat. He tore it into 12 pieces. 31 Then he said to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten pieces for yourself. This is what the Lord, Israel's God, is saying to you: “I will take Solomon's kingdom away from him! I will give you ten tribes to rule over. 32 But Solomon will continue to rule over one tribe. That is because King David served me faithfully, and because I have chosen Jerusalem as my special city. I did not choose a city in any of the other tribes of Israel.

33 I will take the kingdom away from Solomon because he and his people have turned away from me. They have started to worship Ashtoreth, the female god of the Sidonian people. They also worship Chemosh, the god of the Moabite people, and Molech, the god of the Ammonite people. They have not lived in a way that pleases me. They have not done the things that I say are right. They have not obeyed my rules and my laws. They have not lived in a good way, as Solomon's father David did.

34 But I will not take the whole kingdom away from Solomon. I will let him continue to rule as king while he still lives. I will do that because of my servant David that I chose to be king. David obeyed my commands and my rules. 35 I will take the kingdom away from his son and I will give ten tribes for you to rule. 36 But I will leave one tribe for Solomon's son to rule. Then my servant David will continue to have a descendant who serves me as king in Jerusalem. That is the city where I have chosen for people to worship me.

37 But I will make you, Jeroboam, king of Israel. You will rule over all the land that you want for yourself. 38 But you must do everything that I command you to do. You must live in a way that pleases me. You must do the things that I say are right. You must obey my rules and my commands, as my servant David did. If you do that, I will always be with you. I will cause your descendants to continue to rule Israel. What I have done for David's family, I will also do for your family. The nation of Israel will belong to you.[g] 39 Because of Solomon's sins I will punish David's descendants. But I will not punish them for ever.” ’

40 Solomon then tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam escaped to Egypt. Shishak, the king of Egypt, kept Jeroboam safe. Jeroboam stayed in Egypt until Solomon died.

Solomon dies

41 The other things that happened while Solomon was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Solomon’. It tells about Solomon's wisdom and everything that he did. 42 Solomon ruled over all Israel for 40 years while he lived in Jerusalem. 43 Then he died. They buried him with his ancestors, in the city of his father David. His son Rehoboam became king after him.

Solomon’s Wives

11 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women(A) besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites,(B) Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry(C) with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines,(D) and his wives led him astray.(E) 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods,(F) and his heart was not fully devoted(G) to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. 5 He followed Ashtoreth(H) the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek(I) the detestable god of the Ammonites. 6 So Solomon did evil(J) in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

7 On a hill east(K) of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh(L) the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek(M) the detestable god of the Ammonites. 8 He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

9 The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared(N) to him twice. 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods,(O) Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command.(P) 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees,(Q) which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear(R) the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. 12 Nevertheless, for the sake of David(S) your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe(T) for the sake(U) of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”(V)

Solomon’s Adversaries

14 Then the Lord raised up against Solomon an adversary,(W) Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom. 15 Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom.(X) 16 Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom. 17 But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father. 18 They set out from Midian and went to Paran.(Y) Then taking people from Paran with them, they went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.

19 Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage. 20 The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.

21 While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”

22 “What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?” Pharaoh asked.

“Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but do let me go!”

23 And God raised up against Solomon another adversary,(Z) Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer(AA) king of Zobah. 24 When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus,(AB) where they settled and took control. 25 Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram(AC) and was hostile toward Israel.

Jeroboam Rebels Against Solomon

26 Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled(AD) against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.

27 Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces[a](AE) and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father. 28 Now Jeroboam was a man of standing,(AF) and when Solomon saw how well(AG) the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.

29 About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah(AH) the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country, 30 and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore(AI) it into twelve pieces. 31 Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear(AJ) the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32 But for the sake(AK) of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe. 33 I will do this because they have[b] forsaken me and worshiped(AL) Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked(AM) in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees(AN) and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.

34 “‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees. 35 I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes. 36 I will give one tribe(AO) to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp(AP) before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name. 37 However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule(AQ) over all that your heart desires;(AR) you will be king over Israel. 38 If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right(AS) in my eyes by obeying my decrees(AT) and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty(AU) as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you. 39 I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’”

40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled(AV) to Egypt, to Shishak(AW) the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.

Solomon’s Death(AX)

41 As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon? 42 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 43 Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam(AY) his son succeeded him as king.
