Jakob förbereder mötet med Esau
32 Och Jakob fortsatte sin färd. Då mötte Guds änglar honom. 2 (A) När han såg dem sade han: ”Här är Guds skara.” Och han kallade platsen Mahanajim[a].
3 Jakob skickade budbärare[b] framför sig till sin bror Esau i Seirs land på Edoms mark[c] 4 och befallde dem: ”Så här ska ni säga till min herre Esau: Din tjänare Jakob hälsar: Jag har bott hos Laban och dröjt kvar där ända tills nu. 5 Jag har oxar, åsnor, får, tjänare och tjänarinnor, och nu sänder jag bud för att låta min herre veta det, så att jag kan finna nåd för dina ögon.”
6 När budbärarna kom tillbaka till Jakob sade de: ”Vi träffade din bror Esau, och han kommer emot dig med fyrahundra man.” 7 Jakob blev mycket förskräckt och greps av ångest. Han delade upp sitt folk och fåren, korna och kamelerna i två skaror 8 och sade: ”Om Esau överfaller den ena skaran och slår den, så kan den andra komma undan.”
9 (B) Och Jakob bad: ”Herre, min far Abrahams Gud och min far Isaks Gud, Herre, du som sade till mig: Vänd tillbaka till ditt land och till din släkt så ska jag göra dig gott. 10 Jag är inte värdig all den nåd och trofasthet som du har visat din tjänare. När jag gick över denna Jordan hade jag inte mer än min stav, och nu har jag blivit två skaror. 11 Rädda mig från min bror Esaus hand, för jag är rädd att han kommer och dödar mig och mödrarna och barnen. 12 (C) Du har själv sagt: Jag ska göra dig mycket gott och låta dina efterkommande bli som havets sand, omöjliga att räkna.”
13 Jakob stannade där den natten. Från sina hjordar tog han ut gåvor till sin bror Esau: 14 tvåhundra getter och tjugo bockar, tvåhundra tackor och tjugo baggar, 15 trettio kamelston som gav di och deras föl, fyrtio kor och tio tjurar samt tjugo åsneston med tio föl. 16 Han lämnade dem i sina tjänares hand, var hjord för sig, och sade: ”Gå framför mig och håll ett avstånd mellan hjordarna.”
17 Sedan befallde han den som gick först: ”När min bror Esau möter dig och frågar: Vem tillhör du och vart går du, och vem tillhör djuren som du driver framför dig? 18 så ska du svara: De tillhör din tjänare Jakob. Det är en gåva som han skickar till sin herre Esau, och själv kommer han efter oss.” 19 Han befallde också den andre och den tredje och alla de andra som drev hjordarna: ”Som jag har sagt er ska ni säga till Esau, när ni kommer fram till honom. 20 Ni ska också säga: Se, din tjänare Jakob kommer efter oss.” Han tänkte nämligen: ”Jag vill beveka honom med gåvorna som kommer före mig. Sedan kommer jag själv inför hans ansikte. Kanske tar han då emot mig väl.” 21 Så kom gåvorna före honom, medan han själv stannade i lägret den natten.

22 Men Jakob steg upp samma natt och tog sina båda hustrur och sina båda slavinnor och sina elva söner och gick över Jabboks vadställe[d]. 23 Han tog dem och förde dem över bäckravinen tillsammans med allt annat han ägde. 24 (D) Och Jakob blev ensam kvar.
Då brottades en man med honom ända tills gryningen kom. 25 När han såg att han inte kunde övervinna Jakob, slog han honom på höftleden så att höften gick ur led medan han brottades med honom. 26 Och han sade: ”Släpp mig, för gryningen är här.” Men Jakob svarade: ”Jag släpper dig inte förrän du välsignar mig.” 27 Då sade han till honom: ”Vad är ditt namn?” Han svarade: ”Jakob.” 28 (E) Han sade: ”Du ska inte längre heta Jakob utan Israel[e], för du har kämpat med Gud och med människor och segrat.”
29 (F) Och Jakob frågade: ”Låt mig få veta ditt namn.” Han svarade: ”Varför frågar du efter mitt namn?” Och han välsignade honom där.
30 (G) Jakob kallade platsen Peniel[f], för han tänkte: ”Jag har sett Gud ansikte mot ansikte, och ändå har mitt liv skonats.” 31 När han hade kommit förbi Penuel såg han solen gå upp. Och han haltade på höften.
32 Därför äter Israels barn än i dag inte höftsenan som ligger på höftleden, eftersom han slog Jakob på höftleden, på höftsenan.

Jakob ger Esau gåvor
1-2 Jakob och hans familj startade på nytt sin resa, och Guds änglar kom för att möta honom. När han såg det, utropade han: Gud bor här, och han kallade platsen för Guds område.
3 Jakob skickade nu budbärare till sin bror Esau i Seir i landet Edom.
4 Säg så här till min herre, Esau, sa Jakob. Detta är en hälsning från din tjänare Jakob. Jag har bott tillsammans med vår morbror Laban tills nu, och
5 jag äger oxar, åsnor, får och har många tjänare, både män och kvinnor. Jag har skickat detta budskap till dig, min herre, för att du ska veta att jag är på väg till dig, och jag hoppas att du kommer att vara vänligt inställd mot oss.
6 Budbärarna återvände med nyheten att Esau var på väg för att möta Jakob tillsammans med en armé på 400 man!
7 Jakob blev alldeles utom sig av skräck. Han delade sin familj och hjordarna och kamelerna i två grupper.
8 Om Esau anfaller den ena gruppen, kan den andra gruppen kanske fly, tänkte han.
9 Sedan bad Jakob: Min farfar Abrahams och min far Isaks Gud, du Herre, som sa till mig att återvända till mina släktingars land och som sa att du skulle vara god mot mig.
10 Jag är ovärdig den kärleksfulla omsorg som du har visat mig gång på gång, precis som du lovade mig. När jag lämnade hemmet ägde jag ju ingenting utom en vandringsstav, och nu, nu har jag två hela arméer!
11 Herre, rädda mig från att behöva gå under för min bror Esaus hand, för jag är rädd, fruktansvärt rädd att han ska komma och döda mig och dessa mödrar med mina barn.
12 Du har ju lovat att göra gott mot mig och föröka mina ättlingar tills de blir som sanden på stranden, alltför många för att man ska kunna räkna dem.
13-15 Jakob stannade där han var under natten och förberedde en gåva åt sin bror Esau: 200 getter, 20 bockar, 200 tackor, 20 baggar, 30 kameler och deras föl, 40 kor, 10 tjurar, 20 åsnor och 10 åsneföl.
16 Han sa till sina tjänare att fösa djuren framför sig, varje grupp för sig, och att hålla avstånd mellan varje grupp.
17 Han instruerade också männen som drev den första gruppen: När ni möter Esau och han frågar: 'Vart är ni på väg? Vems tjänare är ni? Vems djur är dessa?'
18 så ska ni svara: 'Dessa tillhör din tjänare Jakob, de är en gåva till hans herre Esau! Han kommer själv strax efter oss!'
19 Jakob gav samma instruktion till varje tjänare.
20 Han tänkte nämligen blidka Esau med gåvorna, innan han mötte honom ansikte mot ansikte! Kanske kommer han att vara vänlig mot oss, hoppades Jakob.
21 Gåvan sändes alltså i förväg medan Jakob tillbringade natten i lägret.
22-24 Men under natten steg han upp och väckte sina två hustrur och sina två bihustrur och elva barn och förde dem över floden Jordan vid Jabboks vadställe och återvände sedan till lägret. Han blev kvar där ensam, och en man brottades med honom till gryningen.
25 När denne märkte att han inte kunde vinna kampen, slog han till Jakob på höften så att den gick ur led.
26 Sedan sa han: Släpp mig, för det håller på att bli ljust. Men Jakob svarade: Jag tänker inte släppa dig förrän du välsignar mig.
27 Vad heter du? frågade mannen.Jakob, blev svaret.
28 Det heter du inte längre! sa mannen till honom. Du heter Israel, för du har kämpat med Gud och med människor och varit segerrik.
29 Vad heter du? frågade Jakob.Varför frågar du om mitt namn, sa mannen till honom. Och han välsignade honom där.
30 Jakob kallade platsen Peniel (Guds ansikte), för han sa: Jag har sett Gud ansikte mot ansikte, och ändå är jag fortfarande vid liv.
31 I gryningen när solen gick upp haltade han därifrån på grund av höftskadan.
32 Det är därför som Israels folk än i dag inte äter höftmuskeln, där den är fästad vid höften.

Jacob Prepares to Meet Esau
32 Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is God’s camp.” So he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3 Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 4 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you must say to my lord Esau: This is what your servant Jacob says, ‘I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now. 5 I have oxen and donkeys, flocks, and male servants and female servants, and I am sending this message to tell my lord, so that I may find favor in your sight.’ ”
6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We went to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and what is more, four hundred men are with him.”
7 Then Jacob was very afraid and distressed, and he divided the people that were with him, along with the flocks and herds and the camels, into two groups. 8 He said, “If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the other camp which is left may escape.”
9 And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,’ 10 I am not worthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant. For with my staff I crossed over this Jordan, and now I have become two encampments. 11 Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau. For I fear him, that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children. 12 You said, ‘I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too many to be counted.’ ”
13 So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a gift for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, 15 thirty female camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys. 16 He gave them to his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and keep a distance between each drove.”
17 He commanded the one leading, saying, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals belong?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is also behind us.’ ”
19 Likewise he commanded the second and the third and all that followed the droves, saying, “This is what you are to say to Esau when you find him. 20 Moreover, say, ‘Your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will appease him with the gift that goes before me, and then I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.” 21 So the gift went before him, but he lodged that night in the encampment.

22 The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23 He took them and sent them across the stream along with all that he had. 24 Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him there until daybreak. 25 When the man saw that He did not prevail against Jacob, He touched the socket of his thigh, so the socket of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated, as he wrestled with Him. 26 Then He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”
But Jacob said, “I will not let You go, unless You bless me.”
27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”
And he said, “Jacob.”
28 Then the man said, “Your name will no more be called Jacob, but Israel. For you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29 Then Jacob asked Him, “Tell me, I pray You, Your name.”
But He said, “Why do you ask Me My name?” Then He blessed him there.
30 Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, “I have seen God face to face, and my life has been preserved.”
31 As he crossed over Peniel, the sun rose over him, and he was limping on his thigh. 32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the sinew which is attached to the socket of the thigh, because He touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

32 [a]Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God(A) met him. 2 When Jacob saw them, he said, “This is the camp of God!”(B) So he named that place Mahanaim.[b](C)
3 Jacob sent messengers(D) ahead of him to his brother Esau(E) in the land of Seir,(F) the country of Edom.(G) 4 He instructed them: “This is what you are to say to my lord(H) Esau: ‘Your servant(I) Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban(J) and have remained there till now. 5 I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants.(K) Now I am sending this message to my lord,(L) that I may find favor in your eyes.(M)’”
6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”(N)
7 In great fear(O) and distress(P) Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,[c](Q) and the flocks and herds and camels as well. 8 He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group,[d] the group[e] that is left may escape.”
9 Then Jacob prayed, “O God of my father Abraham,(R) God of my father Isaac,(S) Lord, you who said to me, ‘Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,’(T) 10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness(U) you have shown your servant. I had only my staff(V) when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.(W) 11 Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid(X) he will come and attack me,(Y) and also the mothers with their children.(Z) 12 But you have said, ‘I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand(AA) of the sea, which cannot be counted.(AB)’”
13 He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift(AC) for his brother Esau: 14 two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,(AD) 15 thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.(AE) 16 He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds.”(AF)
17 He instructed the one in the lead: “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?’ 18 then you are to say, ‘They belong to your servant(AG) Jacob. They are a gift(AH) sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.’”
19 He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: “You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him. 20 And be sure to say, ‘Your servant(AI) Jacob is coming behind us.’” For he thought, “I will pacify him with these gifts(AJ) I am sending on ahead;(AK) later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me.”(AL) 21 So Jacob’s gifts(AM) went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons(AN) and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.(AO) 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.(AP) 24 So Jacob was left alone,(AQ) and a man(AR) wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip(AS) so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”(AT)
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,”(AU) he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name(AV) will no longer be Jacob, but Israel,[f](AW) because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”(AX)
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”(AY)
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?”(AZ) Then he blessed(BA) him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel,[g] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,(BB) and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,[h](BC) and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip,(BD) because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.
