2 Så fullbordades himlen och jorden med hela sin härskara[a]. 2 (A) På sjunde dagen hade Gud fullbordat sitt skapelseverk, och han vilade på sjunde dagen från hela det verk som han gjort.[b] 3 Och Gud välsignade den sjunde dagen och helgade den, för på den dagen vilade han från hela sitt verk som han hade skapat och gjort.
I. HIMLENS OCH JORDENS FORTSATTA HISTORIA 2:4-4:26
4 Detta är himlens och jordens fortsatta historia[c] sedan de skapats, när Herren[d] Gud hade gjort jord och himmel.
5 Markens alla buskar fanns ännu inte på jorden och markens alla örter hade ännu inte vuxit upp, för Herren Gud hade inte låtit det regna på jorden och det fanns ingen människa som kunde bruka den. 6 Men en dimma[e] kom upp ur jorden och vattnade hela marken. 7 (B) Och Herren Gud formade människan av jord[f] från marken och blåste in livsande i hennes näsa. Så blev människan en levande varelse.
8 Herren Gud planterade en lustgård i Eden, österut, och satte där människan som han hade format. 9 (C) Och Herren Gud lät alla slags träd växa upp ur marken, ljuvliga att se på och goda att äta av. Mitt i lustgården satte han livets träd och trädet med kunskap om gott och ont.[g]
10 Från Eden[h] gick det ut en flod som vattnade lustgården och sedan delade sig i fyra huvudgrenar. 11 Den första heter Pishon. Det är den som flyter runt hela landet Havila[i], där det finns guld. 12 Guldet i det landet är gott, och där finns också bdelliumharts och onyxsten. 13 Den andra floden heter Gihon. Det är den som flyter runt hela landet Kush[j]. 14 Den tredje floden heter Tigris[k]. Det är den som flyter öster om Assur. Den fjärde floden är Eufrat.
15 Herren Gud tog mannen och satte honom i Edens lustgård för att odla och bevara den. 16 Och Herren Gud gav mannen denna befallning: ”Du kan äta fritt av alla träd i lustgården, 17 (D) men av trädet med kunskap om gott och ont ska du inte äta, för den dag du äter av det ska du döden dö.”
18 (E) Herren Gud sade: ”Det är inte bra att mannen är ensam. Jag ska göra en medhjälpare åt honom, en som är hans like[l].” 19 Herren Gud hade format alla markens djur och himlens alla fåglar av jord. Han förde fram dem till mannen för att se vad han skulle kalla dem. Så som mannen kallade varje levande varelse, så blev dess namn. 20 Och mannen gav namn åt alla boskapsdjur, åt himlens fåglar och markens alla vilda djur. Men åt Adam fanns ingen medhjälpare som var hans like.
21 Då lät Herren Gud en tung sömn falla över mannen. När han hade somnat, tog han ut ett av hans revben[m] och fyllde dess plats med kött. 22 (F) Och Herren Gud byggde en kvinna av revbenet som han tagit från mannen och förde fram henne till honom. 23 Då sade mannen:
”Äntligen! Hon är ben av mina ben[n]
och kött av mitt kött.
Hon ska heta kvinna,
för av man är hon tagen.”[o]
24 (G) Därför ska en man lämna sin far och sin mor och hålla sig till sin hustru, och de ska bli ett kött.[p] 25 (H) Och mannen och hans hustru var båda nakna utan att vara blyga för varandra.

- 2:11 landet Havila Betyder ”sandlandet”. Syftar troligen på arabiska halvön (jfr 10:29, 25:18), som är rik på guld, onyx och doftande rökelsekåda (bdellium).
- 2:13 Kush Betecknar normalt Nubien söder om Egypten. Det har föreslagits att ordet här syftar på kassiternas land i bergen mellan Irak och Iran.
- 2:14 Tigris Hebr. Hiddékel (jfr Dan 10:4).
- 2:18 en som är hans like Ordagrant: ”liksom mittemot honom” (som motsvarar, stämmer).
- 2:21 revben Hebr. séla kan också översättas ”sida”. Det sumeriska ordet för revben (ti) kan också översättas ”liv” (liksom Eva, jfr not till 3:20).
- 2:23 ben av mina ben Skelettets ben, kroppens innersta och tåligaste del, symboliserar människans kärna och väsen (jfr Ps 32:3, 139:15).
- 2:23 kvinna … man På hebreiska ishá … ish.
- 2:24 Citeras av Jesus i Matt 19:5, Mark 10:7 och av Paulus i 1 Kor 6:16, samt med syftning på Kristus i Ef 5:31.

2 Så blev slutligen himlen och jorden fullständiga med allt vad de innehöll.
2 När den sjunde dagen kom var Gud alltså klar med sitt arbete.
3 Han välsignade den sjunde dagen och bestämde att den skulle vara helig, eftersom han till den dagen var färdig med allt han hade skapat.
Adam och Eva
4 Här följer en sammanfattning av händelserna då himlen och jorden skapades av Herren Gud.
5 Först fanns det inga växter och ingen säd kunde gro på jorden, för Herren Gud hade inte sänt något regn, och inte heller fanns det någon som kunde bruka jorden.
6 Men vatten bröt fram ur marken och vattnade jorden.
7 Och Herren formade en mans kropp av markens jord och blåste in livsande i honom. Så blev människan en levande varelse.
Edens trädgård
8 Sedan planterade Herren Gud en trädgård österut i Eden och satte där människan som han format.
9 Herren Gud planterade vackra träd av alla slag i trädgården, och de gav den mest utsökta frukt. Mitt i trädgården planterade han Livets Träd och Kunskapens Träd, som ger kunskap om gott och ont.
10 En flod rann upp i Eden. Den bevattnade trädgården och delade sig sedan i fyra floder.
11-12 Den första heter Pison, och den flyter runt hela Havilas land, där det finns gott om rent guld och vacker harts och onyxsten.
13 Den andra floden kallas Gihon och flyter omkring hela landet Kus.
14 Den tredje floden heter Tigris och flyter öster om staden Assur. Den fjärde floden är Eufrat.
15 Herren Gud satte mannen i Edens trädgård för att bruka och vårda den.
16-17 Men Herren Gud gav mannen denna varning: Du får äta av vilken frukt som helst i trädgården, utom av den från Kunskapens Träd, för dess frukt kommer att öppna dina ögon, så att du blir vaken över vad som är rätt och orätt, gott och ont. Om du äter av den kommer du att straffas med döden.
Eva skapas
18 Sedan sa Herren Gud: Det är inte bra för mannen att vara ensam. Jag ska skapa en kamrat åt honom, en hjälp som passar för hans behov.
19-20 Herren Gud formade därför av jord djur och fåglar av alla slag och förde dem till mannen för att se vad han skulle kalla dem, och vad han kallade dem fick de sedan heta. Men fortfarande fanns det ingen lämplig hjälp för mannen.
21 Herren Gud lät då mannen falla i djup sömn, tog ut ett av hans revben och slöt till stället där han hade tagit ut det.
22 Sedan gjorde han en kvinna av revbenet och förde henne fram till mannen.
23 Där är hon! utropade Adam. Hon är en del av mitt eget kött och blod! Hon är tagen ur en man, och hon ska kallas kvinna.
24 Det är därför som en man lämnar sin far och mor och förenar sig med sin hustru på ett sådant sätt att de blir en person.
25 Trots att mannen och hans hustru var nakna, var inte någon av dem generad eller blyg.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens,
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.
21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

4 This is the account(G) of the heavens and the earth when they were created,(H) when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.
5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth[a] and no plant had yet sprung up,(I) for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth(J) and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams[b] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 Then the Lord God formed(K) a man[c](L) from the dust(M) of the ground(N) and breathed into his nostrils the breath(O) of life,(P) and the man became a living being.(Q)
8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;(R) and there he put the man he had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees(S) that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life(T) and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.(U)
10 A river(V) watering the garden flowed from Eden;(W) from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah,(X) where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin[d](Y) and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.[e] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris;(Z) it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(AA)
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden(AB) to work it and take care of it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;(AC) 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,(AD) for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”(AE)
18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”(AF)
19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals(AG) and all the birds in the sky.(AH) He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called(AI) each living creature,(AJ) that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.
But for Adam[f] no suitable helper(AK) was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep;(AL) and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs[g] and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h](AM) he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
23 The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;(AN)
she shall be called(AO) ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.(AP)”
24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united(AQ) to his wife, and they become one flesh.(AR)
25 Adam and his wife were both naked,(AS) and they felt no shame.
