Gud lovar Abram en son
15 Något senare kom Herrens ord till Abram i en syn:
”Var inte rädd, Abram!
Jag är din sköld och ska ge dig rik belöning.”
2 Men Abram svarade: ”Herre, Herre, vad kan du ge mig? Jag går ju bort barnlös. Min tjänare Elieser från Damaskus kommer att ärva mig.”[a] 3 Abram sa vidare: ”Du har ju inte gett mig några barn. Då blir det min tjänare som ärver mig.”
4 Då kom Herrens ord till honom igen: ”Nej, din tjänare kommer inte att bli din arvinge, för du ska få en son som ska ärva dig.” 5 Sedan förde Gud ut Abram och sa till honom: ”Se upp mot himlen och räkna stjärnorna, om du kan. Så talrika ska dina efterkommande[b] bli.” 6 Och Abram trodde Herren, och därför räknade Herren honom som rättfärdig.[c]
7 Han sa till honom: ”Jag är Herren, som förde dig ut från Ur i Kaldéen för att ge dig detta land som egendom.” 8 Men Abram svarade: ”Herre, Herre, hur kan jag veta att jag ska få det här?” 9 Då sa Herren till honom att hämta en tre år gammal kviga, en tre år gammal get, en tre år gammal bagge, en turturduva och en ung duva. 10 Abram hämtade djuren och styckade dem i två delar och lade delarna mitt emot varandra, men fåglarna delade han inte.[d] 11 Och när rovfåglar angrep de slaktade djuren, schasade Abram bort dem.
12 När solen gick ner den kvällen föll en tung sömn över Abram, och ett fruktansvärt, skrämmande mörker kom över honom.
13 Då sa Herren till Abram: ”Du ska veta att dina efterkommande ska bo i ett främmande land och bli slavar och förtryckas under fyrahundra år. 14 Men jag ska döma det folk som gör dem till slavar, och efter det ska de gå därifrån med stora rikedomar. 15 Själv kommer du att dö i frid och begravas hos dina fäder vid hög ålder. 16 I den fjärde generationen ska dina ättlingar komma tillbaka hit, för amoréerna kommer inte att ha fyllt sina synders mått förrän då.”
17 När solen gick ner och det blev mörkt, syntes ett rykande fyrfat och en flammande fackla som passerade mellan de slaktade djurhalvorna.[e]
18 Den dagen upprättade Herren detta förbund med Abram: ”Jag ger detta land till dina ättlingar, ända från Egyptens flod till den stora floden Eufrat, 19 kenitéernas, kenisséernas, kadmonéernas, 20 hettiternas, perisséernas, refaéernas, 21 amoréernas, kanaanéernas, girgashéernas och jevuséernas land.”

Herren sluter förbund med Abram
15 Därefter kom Herrens ord till Abram i en syn. Han sade: "Frukta inte, Abram. Jag är din sköld. Din lön skall bli mycket stor." 2 Men Abram sade: "Herre Herre, vad skall du ge mig? Jag går ju bort barnlös, och arvinge till mitt hus är Elieser från Damaskus." 3 Abram sade vidare: "Se, mig har du inte givit någon avkomma. En av mitt husfolk kommer att ärva mig." 4 Men Herrens ord kom till honom: "Denne skall inte ärva dig, utan en som kommer från din egen kropp skall bli din arvinge." 5 Sedan förde han honom ut och sade: "Se upp mot himlen och räkna stjärnorna, om du kan räkna dem", och han sade till honom: "Så skall din avkomma bli." 6 Och Abram trodde på Herren, och han räknade honom det till rättfärdighet.
7 Sedan sade han till honom: "Jag är Herren, som har fört dig ut från det kaldeiska Ur för att ge dig detta land till arvedel." 8 Han svarade: "Herre, Herre, hur skall jag veta att jag kommer att ärva det?" 9 Då sade han till honom: "Hämta åt mig en treårig kviga, en treårig get, en treårig bagge, en turturduva och en ung duva." 10 Han hämtade alla dessa åt honom och styckade dem mitt itu och lade styckena mot varandra. Men fåglarna styckade han inte. 11 Och rovfåglar slog sig ner på de döda kropparna, men Abram drev bort dem. 12 När solen höll på att gå ner föll en tung sömn över Abram, och se, då kom skräck och ett stort mörker över honom. 13 Och Herren sade till Abram: "Det skall du veta att dina efterkommande skall bo som främlingar i ett land som inte är deras. Där skall de bli slavar, och man skall förtrycka dem i fyrahundra år. 14 Men det folk som gör dem till slavar skall jag döma. Sedan skall de dra ut med stora ägodelar. 15 Men du själv skall gå till dina fäder i frid och bli begravd vid hög ålder. 16 I fjärde släktledet skall de återvända hit. Ty ännu har inte amoreerna fyllt sina synders mått."
17 När solen hade gått ner och det blivit alldeles mörkt, syntes en rykande ugn med en brinnande fackla, som for fram mellan köttstyckena. 18 På den dagen slöt Herren ett förbund med Abram och sade: "Åt dina efterkommande skall jag ge detta land, från Egyptens flod ända till den stora floden, floden Eufrat: 19 keniternas, kenisiternas, kadmoneernas, 20 hetiternas, perisseernas, rafaeernas, 21 amoreernas, kananeernas, girgaseernas och jebusiternas land."

Yahweh’s Covenant with Abram
15 After these things the word of Yahweh came[a] to Abram in a vision, saying: “Do not be afraid, Abram; I am your shield, and your reward shall be very great.” 2 Then[b] Abram said, “O Yahweh, my Lord, what will you give me? I continue to be[c] childless, and my heir[d] is Eliezer of Damascus.” 3 And Abram said, “Look, you have not given me a descendant, and here, a member of my household[e] is my heir.”[f] 4 And behold, the word of Yahweh came to him saying, “This person will not be your heir,[g] but your own son will be your heir.”[h] 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them.” And he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed in Yahweh, and he reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7 And he said to him, “I am Yahweh, who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give this land to you, to possess it.” 8 And he said, “O Yahweh God, how shall I know that I will possess it?” 9 And he said to him, “Take for me a three-year-old heifer, and a three-year-old female goat, and a three-year-old ram, and a turtledove and a young pigeon.” 10 And he took for him all these and cut them in pieces down the middle. And he put each piece opposite the other,[i] but the birds he did not cut. 11 And the birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. 12 And it happened, as the sun went down,[j] then a deep sleep fell upon Abram and, behold, a great terrifying darkness fell upon him. 13 And he said to Abram, “You must surely know[k] that your descendants shall be as aliens in a land not their own.[l] And they shall serve them[m] and they[n] shall oppress them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation that they[o] serve I will judge. Then[p] afterward they shall go out with great possessions. 15 And as for you, you shall go to your ancestors[q] in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And the fourth generation shall return here, for the guilt of the Amorites is not yet complete.”[r] 17 And after the sun had gone down and it was dusk, behold, a smoking firepot and a flaming torch passed between those half pieces. 18 On that day Yahweh made[s] a covenant with Abram saying, “To your offspring I will give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates river, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram(A) in a vision:(B)
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(F) what can you give me since I remain childless(G) and the one who will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?(H)” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant(I) in my household(J) will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.(K)” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars(L)—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring[d] be.”(M)
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.(N)
7 He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out(O) of Ur of the Chaldeans(P) to give you this land to take possession of it.”(Q)
8 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,(R) how can I know(S) that I will gain possession of it?”(T)
9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,(U) a goat and a ram, each three years old,(V) along with a dove and a young pigeon.(W)”
10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;(X) the birds, however, he did not cut in half.(Y) 11 Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,(Z) but Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,(AA) and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him. 13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years(AB) your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved(AC) and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out(AD) with great possessions.(AE) 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors(AF) in peace and be buried at a good old age.(AG) 16 In the fourth generation(AH) your descendants will come back here,(AI) for the sin of the Amorites(AJ) has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch(AK) appeared and passed between the pieces.(AL) 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram(AM) and said, “To your descendants I give this land,(AN) from the Wadi[e] of Egypt(AO) to the great river, the Euphrates(AP)— 19 the land of the Kenites,(AQ) Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites,(AR) Perizzites,(AS) Rephaites,(AT) 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”(AU)

2 And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?
3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.
12 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.
13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;
14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.
15 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.
16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
18 In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,
21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.
