Isak gifter sig med Rebecka
24 Abraham var nu en mycket gammal man och Gud hade välsignat honom på alla sätt.
2 En dag sa Abraham till sin förvaltare och äldste tjänare:
3 Svär vid Herren, himlens och jordens Gud, att du inte ska låta min son gifta sig med någon av de kananeiska flickorna på orten.
4 Gå i stället till mitt hemland, till mina släktingar, och försök att hitta en hustru åt honom där.
5 Men om jag inte kan hitta en flicka som vill ge sig av så långt bort hemifrån? frågade tjänaren. Ska jag då ta med Isak dit, så att han kan få bo bland sina släktingar?
6 Nej, det får du inte göra vad som än händer, varnade Abraham.
7 Herren, himlens Gud, sa till mig att lämna mitt land och mitt folk och lovade att ge mig och mina barn detta land. Han ska skicka sin ängel framför dig, och han ska se till att du finner en flicka därifrån som kan bli min sonhustru.
8 Om du inte lyckas, så är du fri från denna ed, men under inga omständigheter får du ta med dig min son dit.
9 Tjänaren lovade då att följa Abrahams instruktioner.
10 Han tog med sig tio av Abrahams kameler, lastade med gåvor av allt det bästa hans husbonde ägde och reste till den stad där Nahor bodde, i centrala Irak.
11 Där lät han kamelerna lägga sig ner bredvid en källa utanför staden. Det var kväll, och byns kvinnor kom ut för att hämta vatten.
12 Herre, min husbondes Gud, bad han, visa att du är trofast mot min husbonde Abraham och hjälp mig att fullfölja resans uppdrag.
13 Här står jag nu bredvid denna källa, och byns flickor kommer ut för att hämta vatten.
14 Detta är min begäran: Om jag ber en av dem om något att dricka och hon säger: 'Javisst, och jag ska vattna dina kameler också!' så låt det vara den som du har utsett till att bli Isaks hustru. På så sätt ska jag veta vem det är.
15-16 Medan han ännu talade till Herren om detta, kom en ung, vacker flicka som hette Rebecka med en vattenkruka på sin axel och fyllde den vid källan. Hennes far hette Betuel, son till Nahor och hans fru Milka.
17 Tjänaren sprang fram till henne och bad om något att dricka.
18 Javisst, sa hon och böjde snabbt ner kannan åt honom så att han kunde dricka.
19 Sedan sa hon: Jag ska vattna dina kameler också, tills de druckit så mycket de vill.
20 Hon tömde kannan i vattenhon och sprang ner till källan igen och fortsatte att bära vatten åt kamelerna, tills de slutligen hade fått nog.
21 Tjänaren sa inget mer, men betraktade henne noggrant för att se efter om hon utförde det han bett Gud om, och om hon var den han sökte.
22 När kamelerna hade slutat att dricka, tog han fram ett guldörhänge som vägde fem gram, och två tunga guldarmband.
23 Vems dotter är du? frågade han. Kan det vara så att din far har någon plats, där han kan ta emot oss över natten?
24 Min far heter Betuel, son till Milka och hennes man Nahor, svarade hon.
25 Ja, vi har gott om hö och mat åt kamelerna, och ett gästrum har vi också.
26 Mannen stod där en stund med huvudet böjt och bad till Herren:
27 Tack Herre, du som är min herre Abrahams Gud. Tack för att du är så trogen och sann mot honom att du har lett mig direkt till en familj som är släkt med min husbonde.
28 Flickan sprang hem för att berätta för sina närmaste vad som hänt.
29-30 När nu hennes bror Laban såg örhänget och armbanden på sin systers handleder och hörde berättelsen, sprang han ut till källan, där mannen fortfarande stod med sina kameler, och han sa till honom:
31 Kom och bo hos oss, min vän. Varför står du här utanför staden, när vi redan har rum i ordning åt dig och en plats iordningställd åt kamelerna?
32 Då följde mannen med Laban hem, och Laban gav honom halm för kamelerna att ligga på och mat åt dem och vatten åt kameldrivarna, så att de kunde tvätta sina fötter.
33 Sedan serverades kvällsmåltiden. Men den gamle mannen sa: Jag tänker inte äta förrän jag har berättat för er varför jag är här.Och Laban sa: Ja, naturligtvis. Berätta ditt ärende!
34 Jag är Abrahams tjänare, förklarade han.
35 Herren har gett min husbonde så många välsignelser att han är en stor man där han bor. Gud har gett honom fårhjordar och boskapshjordar, han är rik på silver och guld och har många slavar och kameler och åsnor.
36 När Sara, min husbondes hustru, var mycket gammal, födde hon en son åt min husbonde, och min husbonde har gett honom allt han äger.
37 Min husbonde har också fått mig att lova att inte låta Isak gifta sig med någon av ortens flickor.
38 Därför har jag fått order att bege mig till hans släktingar här i detta avlägsna land, till hans brors familj, för att hämta en flicka härifrån, som kan gifta sig med hans son. När jag frågade honom:
39 'Men om jag inte kan hitta en flicka som vill komma med mig?' svarade han:
40 'Hon kommer att vilja det, för min Herre, i vars gemenskap jag har vandrat, ska skicka sin ängel med dig och se till att ditt uppdrag kommer att bli framgångsrikt. Ja, leta rätt på en flicka bland mina släktingar, från min brors familj.
41 Du har lovat under ed att gå och fråga dem. Om de inte vill skicka någon, så är du befriad från ditt löfte.'
42 När jag i dag på eftermiddagen kom till brunnen, bad jag denna bön: 'Herre, min herre Abrahams Gud, om du planerar att göra mitt uppdrag framgångsrikt, får du leda mig på detta sätt:
43 Här står jag nu bredvid denna brunn. Jag tänker säga till en av flickorna som kommer hit för att hämta vatten: Var snäll och ge mig lite vatten att dricka
44 och hon ska svara: Javisst! Och jag ska vattna dina kameler också! Låt den flickan vara den som du har utvalt till att bli hustru åt min husbondes son!'
45 Innan jag hade slutat tala kom Rebecka med sin vattenkanna på axeln, och hon gick ner till brunnen och hämtade vatten och fyllde kannan. Jag sa till henne: 'Ge mig något att dricka!'
46 Snabbt lyfte hon ner kannan från axeln, så att jag kunde dricka, och sa till mig: 'Javisst, herre, och jag ska vattna kamelerna också!' Och det gjorde hon!
47 Då frågade jag henne: 'Vems familj kommer du ifrån?' Och hon sa till mig: 'Nahors. Min far heter Betuel, Nahors och hans fru Milkas son.' Då gav jag henne örhänget och armbanden.
48 Sedan böjde jag mitt huvud och tillbad och välsignade Herren, min herre Abrahams Gud, för att han hade lett mig rätt i mitt sökande efter en flicka från min husbondes brors familj.
49 Säg därför 'ja' eller 'nej' till mig. Vill ni, eller vill ni inte, vara goda mot min husbonde och göra vad som är rätt? När ni svarar mig, vet jag vad nästa steg ska bli, om jag ska gå i den ena eller den andra riktningen.
50 Då svarade Laban och Betuel: Herren har tydligen fört dig hit, så vad kan vi säga?
51 Ta henne och gå! Ja, låt henne bli hustru till din husbondes son, precis som Herren har sagt.
52 Vid detta svar föll Abrahams tjänare ner på sina knän inför Herren.
53 Sedan gav han Rebecka juveler, insatta i rent guld och silver, och underbara kläder, och han gav också många värdefulla presenter till hennes mor och bror.
54 De åt en kvällsmåltid, och tjänaren och männen som var med honom stannade där över natten. Men tidigt nästa morgon sa han: Låt mig resa tillbaka till min husbonde!
55 Men vi vill att Rebecka ska stanna här hos oss åtminstone tio dagar eller så! utropade hennes mor och bror. Sedan kan hon resa.
56 Men han bad: Hindra mig inte att resa. Herren har sett till att mitt uppdrag lyckats, och jag vill rapportera om detta till min husbonde.
57 Nåväl, sa de. Vi ska ropa på flickan och fråga henne vad hon tycker.
58 Då ropade de på Rebecka. Är du villig att resa med denne man? frågade de henne. Och hon svarade: Ja, det vill jag.
59 De sa då adjö till henne och skickade med den kvinna som hade varit hennes sköterska i barndomen,
60 och de välsignade Rebecka med denna välsignelse: Vår kära syster, må du bli mor till många miljoner! Måtte dina ättlingar vinna över alla sina fiender.
61 Rebecka och hennes tjänarinnor steg upp på kamelerna och följde med honom.
62 Under tiden hade Isak, vars hem låg i Negev, återvänt till Beer-Lahai-Roi.
63 När han en kväll tog en promenad över åkrarna försjunken i tankar, tittade han upp och såg kamelerna komma.
64 Rebecka lade märke till honom och steg snabbt ner.
65 Vem är denne man, som vandrar över åkrarna för att möta oss? frågade hon tjänaren. Han svarade: Det är min husbondes son. Då drog hon sin slöja över ansiktet.
66 Sedan berättade tjänaren hela historien för Isak.
67 Isak förde Rebecka till sin mors tält, och hon blev hans hustru. Han älskade henne och hon blev till stor tröst för honom, eftersom han förlorat sin mor.

Rebecka blir Isaks hustru
24 Abraham var nu gammal och hade nått hög ålder, och Herren hade välsignat honom i allt. 2 Då sade Abraham till den äldste tjänaren i sitt hus, den som hade ansvar för allt Abraham ägde: "Lägg din hand under min höft. 3 Jag binder dig med en ed vid Herren, himmelens Gud och jordens Gud, att du inte tar en hustru åt min son från döttrarna till kananeerna som jag bor ibland, 4 utan att du går till mitt land och till min släkt och där tar en hustru åt min son Isak." 5 Tjänaren sade till honom: "Men om kvinnan inte vill följa med mig till det här landet, skall jag då föra din son tillbaka till det land som du har kommit ifrån?" 6 Abraham svarade honom: "Se till att du inte för min son tillbaka dit. 7 Herren, himmelens Gud, som har tagit mig från min fars hus och från det land där jag föddes, han som har talat till mig och gett mig sin ed och sagt: 'Åt dina efterkommande skall jag ge detta land', han skall sända sin ängel framför dig, så att du kan hämta en hustru åt min son därifrån. 8 Men om kvinnan inte vill följa med dig, är du fri från denna ed till mig. För bara inte min son tillbaka dit!" 9 Då lade tjänaren sin hand under sin herre Abrahams höft och lovade honom detta med ed.
10 Tjänaren tog sedan tio av sin herres kameler och begav sig i väg med alla slags dyrbara gåvor från sin herre. Han styrde sin färd mot Nahors stad i Aram-Naharajim. 11 Där lät han kamelerna lägga sig ner vid en vattenbrunn utanför staden. Det var nu kväll, den tid då kvinnorna brukade komma ut för att hämta vatten. 12 Och han bad: " Herre, min herre Abrahams Gud, låt mig få framgång i dag och visa nåd mot min herre Abraham. 13 Jag står här vid vattenkällan och stadens döttrar kommer hit för att hämta vatten. 14 Den flicka som jag ber: Räck mig din kruka så att jag får dricka, och som svarar: Drick! Dina kameler skall jag också ge vatten, låt henne vara den du har bestämt åt din tjänare Isak. På så sätt skall jag veta att du har visat godhet mot min herre."
15 Och det hände att innan han hade slutat tala, se, då kom Rebecka ut med sin kruka på axeln. Hon var dotter till Betuel som var son till Milka, Abrahams bror Nahors hustru. 16 Det var en mycket vacker flicka, en ung kvinna som ingen man hade kommit nära.[a] Hon gick ner till källan och fyllde sin kruka och steg sedan upp igen.
17 Då sprang tjänaren emot henne och sade: "Låt mig få dricka lite vatten ur din kruka." 18 Hon svarade: "Drick, min herre" och tog snabbt ner krukan i handen och gav honom att dricka. 19 När hon hade gett honom att dricka sade hon: "Jag skall ösa upp vatten åt dina kameler också, tills de alla har fått dricka." 20 Hon skyndade sig att tömma sin kruka i vattenhon och sprang sedan tillbaka till brunnen för att ösa upp vatten. Hon öste så upp vatten åt alla hans kameler.
21 Mannen iakttog henne under tystnad, för han ville veta om Herren hade gjort hans resa framgångsrik eller inte. 22 När alla kamelerna hade druckit tog mannen fram en näsring av guld som vägde en halv sikel och två guldarmband som vägde tio siklar, 23 och han frågade: "Vems dotter är du? Säg mig det. Och finns det plats för oss i din fars hus över natten?" 24 Hon svarade honom: "Jag är dotter till Betuel, Milkas son, som hon födde åt Nahor." 25 Och hon fortsatte: "Vi har gott om halm och foder. Vi har också plats så att du kan stanna över natten." 26 Då böjde mannen sig ner och tillbad Herren 27 och sade: "Lovad vare Herren, min herre Abrahams Gud, som inte har tagit sin nåd och trofasthet från min herre! Herren har lett mig på vägen hem till min herres släkt." 28 Och flickan sprang hem och berättade alltsammans.
29 Rebecka hade en bror som hette Laban. Han sprang i väg till mannen vid källan. 30 Han hade nämligen sett näsringen och armbanden som hans syster bar, och när han hörde sin syster berätta vad mannen sagt till henne, gav han sig i väg ut till mannen som stod hos kamelerna vid källan. 31 Han sade: "Kom in, du Herrens välsignade! Varför står du härute? Jag har gjort huset i ordning och det finns plats för kamelerna." 32 Så kom mannen till hennes hem, och man lastade av kamelerna och tog fram halm och foder åt dem och vatten till att tvätta hans och hans följeslagares fötter. 33 Man satte fram mat åt honom, men han sade: "Jag vill inte äta förrän jag har framfört mitt ärende." Laban sade: "Säg det!"
34 Då sade han: "Jag är Abrahams tjänare. 35 Herren har rikligen välsignat min herre, så att han har blivit en mäktig man. Han har gett honom får och nötboskap, silver och guld, tjänare och tjänarinnor, kameler och åsnor. 36 Min herres hustru Sara har fött min herre en son på sin ålderdom, och honom har han gett allt han äger. 37 Nu har min herre bundit mig vid ed och sagt: Du får inte åt min son ta en hustru bland döttrarna till kananeerna i landet där jag bor, 38 utan du skall gå till min fars hus och till min släkt och där hämta en hustru åt min son. 39 Då sade jag till min herre: Men om kvinnan inte vill följa med mig? 40 Han svarade: Herren, som jag har vandrat inför, skall sända sin ängel med dig och göra din resa framgångsrik, så att du kan hämta en hustru åt min son från min släkt, från min fars hus. 41 Först när du kommer till min släkt blir du löst från eden - om de vägrar att ge henne åt dig är du fri från eden till mig. 42 Så kom jag i dag till källan och jag sade: Herre, min herre Abrahams Gud, om du ändå ville låta den resa jag företagit mig bli framgångsrik! 43 Jag står nu här vid vattenkällan. Om det kommer en ung kvinna för att hämta vatten och jag säger till henne: Låt mig få dricka lite vatten ur din kruka, 44 och hon svarar mig: Drick du. Också åt dina kameler skall jag ösa upp vatten, låt det då vara den kvinna som Herren har utsett åt min herres son. 45 Innan jag hade slutat att säga så för mig själv, kom Rebecka ut med sin kruka på axeln och gick ner till källan för att hämta vatten. Då sade jag till henne: Låt mig få dricka! 46 Hon lyfte snabbt ner sin kruka från axeln och sade: Drick, och jag skall också ge dina kameler vatten. Då drack jag, och hon gav också kamelerna vatten. 47 Jag frågade henne: Vems dotter är du? Hon svarade: Jag är dotter till Betuel, Nahors son, som föddes åt honom av Milka. Då satte jag ringen i hennes näsa och armbanden på hennes armar. 48 Sedan böjde jag mig ner och tillbad Herren och lovade Herren, min herre Abrahams Gud, som hade fört mig på rätt väg, så att jag åt min herres son skulle få en dotter från hans släkt. 49 Om ni vill visa min herre kärlek och trofasthet så säg mig det. Om inte, så säg mig det också, så att jag kan vända mig åt annat håll, till höger eller vänster."
50 Då sade Laban och Betuel: "Detta är från Herren. Vi kan inte säga någonting till dig, vare sig ont eller gott. 51 Se, där står Rebecka framför dig. Tag henne och gå, så att hon kan bli hustru åt din herres son, som Herren har sagt." 52 När Abrahams tjänare hörde detta, föll han ner på marken inför Herren. 53 Sedan tog tjänaren fram silversmycken, guldsmycken och kläder och gav till Rebecka. Han gav också hennes bror och mor dyrbara gåvor. 54 Och han och hans följeslagare åt och drack och stannade sedan över natten. Men på morgonen när de hade stigit upp, sade han: "Låt mig nu fara till min herre." 55 Men både Rebeckas bror och hennes mor sade: "Låt flickan stanna hos oss några dagar, tio eller så. Sedan kan du fara." 56 Men han svarade dem: "Uppehåll mig inte, när nu Herren har gjort min resa framgångsrik. Låt mig fara. Jag vill resa hem till min herre." 57 Då sade de: "Vi kallar hit flickan och frågar henne själv." 58 De kallade till sig Rebecka och frågade henne: "Vill du följa med den här mannen?" Hon svarade: "Ja". 59 Då lät de sin syster Rebecka och hennes amma fara tillsammans med Abrahams tjänare och hans män. 60 Och de välsignade Rebecka och sade till henne:
"Av dig, vår syster, skall komma
tusen gånger tiotusen,
och din avkomma skall inta
sina fienders portar!"
61 Så bröt Rebecka upp med sina tjänsteflickor. De red på kamelerna och följde med mannen. Och tjänaren tog med sig Rebecka och for sin väg.
62 Isak hade just kommit tillbaka från Beer-Lahaj-Roi, ty han bodde i Negev. 63 Mot kvällen när han gick och grubblade ute på fältet, såg han upp och fick se kameler komma. 64 När Rebecka lyfte blicken fick hon se Isak. Hon steg ner från kamelen 65 och frågade tjänaren: "Vem är den mannen som kommer emot oss på fältet?" Tjänaren svarade "Det är min herre." Då tog hon sin slöja och dolde sig. 66 Tjänaren berättade för Isak om allt han hade gjort. 67 Sedan förde Isak in henne i sin mor Saras tält, och han tog Rebecka till sig. Hon blev hans hustru och han hade henne kär. Så blev Isak tröstad i sorgen efter sin mor.

Isaac and Rebekah
24 Abraham was now very old,(A) and the Lord had blessed(B) him in every way.(C) 2 He said to the senior servant(D) in his household, the one in charge of all that he had,(E) “Put your hand under my thigh.(F) 3 I want you to swear(G) by the Lord, the God of heaven(H) and the God of earth,(I) that you will not get a wife for my son(J) from the daughters of the Canaanites,(K) among whom I am living,(L) 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives(M) and get a wife for my son Isaac.(N)”
5 The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to come back with me to this land?(O) Shall I then take your son back to the country you came from?(P)”
6 “Make sure that you do not take my son back there,”(Q) Abraham said. 7 “The Lord, the God of heaven,(R) who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land(S) and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring[a](T) I will give this land’(U)—he will send his angel before you(V) so that you can get a wife for my son from there. 8 If the woman is unwilling to come back with you, then you will be released from this oath(W) of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”(X) 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh(Y) of his master(Z) Abraham and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
10 Then the servant left, taking with him ten of his master’s camels(AA) loaded with all kinds of good things(AB) from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim[b](AC) and made his way to the town of Nahor.(AD) 11 He had the camels kneel down near the well(AE) outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.(AF)
12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham,(AG) make me successful(AH) today, and show kindness(AI) to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.(AJ) 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink,(AK) and I’ll water your camels too’(AL)—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac.(AM) By this I will know(AN) that you have shown kindness to my master.”
15 Before he had finished praying,(AO) Rebekah(AP) came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel(AQ) son of Milkah,(AR) who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor.(AS) 16 The woman was very beautiful,(AT) a virgin;(AU) no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”(AV)
18 “Drink,(AW) my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
19 After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels(AX) too,(AY) until they have had enough to drink.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels.(AZ) 21 Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.(BA)
22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring(BB) weighing a beka[c] and two gold bracelets(BC) weighing ten shekels.[d] 23 Then he asked, “Whose daughter are you?(BD) Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?(BE)”
24 She answered him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son that Milkah bore to Nahor.(BF)” 25 And she added, “We have plenty of straw and fodder,(BG) as well as room for you to spend the night.”
26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord,(BH) 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord,(BI) the God of my master Abraham,(BJ) who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness(BK) to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey(BL) to the house of my master’s relatives.”(BM)
28 The young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things.(BN) 29 Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban,(BO) and he hurried out to the man at the spring. 30 As soon as he had seen the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s arms,(BP) and had heard Rebekah tell what the man said to her, he went out to the man and found him standing by the camels near the spring. 31 “Come, you who are blessed by the Lord,”(BQ) he said. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder(BR) were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet.(BS) 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I have to say.”
“Then tell us,” Laban said.
34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant.(BT) 35 The Lord has blessed(BU) my master abundantly,(BV) and he has become wealthy.(BW) He has given him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male and female servants, and camels and donkeys.(BX) 36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son in her old age,(BY) and he has given him everything he owns.(BZ) 37 And my master made me swear an oath,(CA) and said, ‘You must not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,(CB) 38 but go to my father’s family and to my own clan, and get a wife for my son.’(CC)
39 “Then I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not come back with me?’(CD)
40 “He replied, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked faithfully,(CE) will send his angel with you(CF) and make your journey a success,(CG) so that you can get a wife for my son from my own clan and from my father’s family.(CH) 41 You will be released from my oath if, when you go to my clan, they refuse to give her to you—then you will be released from my oath.’(CI)
42 “When I came to the spring today, I said, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, if you will, please grant success(CJ) to the journey on which I have come. 43 See, I am standing beside this spring.(CK) If a young woman(CL) comes out to draw water and I say to her, “Please let me drink a little water from your jar,”(CM) 44 and if she says to me, “Drink, and I’ll draw water for your camels too,” let her be the one the Lord has chosen for my master’s son.’(CN)
45 “Before I finished praying in my heart,(CO) Rebekah came out, with her jar on her shoulder.(CP) She went down to the spring and drew water, and I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’(CQ)
46 “She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too.’(CR) So I drank, and she watered the camels also.(CS)
47 “I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’(CT)
“She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel(CU) son of Nahor, whom Milkah bore to him.’(CV)
“Then I put the ring in her nose(CW) and the bracelets on her arms,(CX) 48 and I bowed down and worshiped the Lord.(CY) I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham,(CZ) who had led me on the right road to get the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.(DA) 49 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness(DB) to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”
50 Laban and Bethuel(DC) answered, “This is from the Lord;(DD) we can say nothing to you one way or the other.(DE) 51 Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed.(DF)”
52 When Abraham’s servant heard what they said, he bowed down to the ground before the Lord.(DG) 53 Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing(DH) and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts(DI) to her brother and to her mother. 54 Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night there.
When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way(DJ) to my master.”
55 But her brother and her mother replied, “Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so;(DK) then you[e] may go.”
56 But he said to them, “Do not detain me, now that the Lord has granted success(DL) to my journey. Send me on my way(DM) so I may go to my master.”
57 Then they said, “Let’s call the young woman and ask her about it.”(DN) 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”
“I will go,”(DO) she said.
59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,(DP) along with her nurse(DQ) and Abraham’s servant and his men. 60 And they blessed(DR) Rebekah and said to her,
“Our sister, may you increase
to thousands upon thousands;(DS)
may your offspring possess
the cities of their enemies.”(DT)
61 Then Rebekah and her attendants(DU) got ready and mounted the camels and went back with the man. So the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi,(DV) for he was living in the Negev.(DW) 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate,[f](DX) and as he looked up,(DY) he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel(DZ) 65 and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”
“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil(EA) and covered herself.
66 Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. 67 Isaac brought her into the tent(EB) of his mother Sarah,(EC) and he married Rebekah.(ED) So she became his wife, and he loved her;(EE) and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.(EF)

24 Now Abraham was old, advanced in age,[a] and Yahweh had blessed Abraham in everything. 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh 3 that I may make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling, 4 but that you will go to my land and to my family, and take a wife for my son, for Isaac.” 5 And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow[b] me to this land—must I then return your son to the land from whence you came?” 6 Abraham said to him, “You must take care[c] that you do not return my son there. 7 Yahweh, the God of heaven who took me from the house of my father and from the land of my family, and who spoke to me and swore to me, saying, ‘to your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 And if the woman is not willing to follow[d] you, then you shall be released from this oath of mine—only you must not return my son there.” 9 Then the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and he swore to him concerning this matter. 10 And the servant took ten camels from his master’s camels, and he went with all kinds of his master’s good things in his hand. And he arose and went to Aram-Naharaim, to the city of Nahor. 11 And he made the camels kneel outside the city at the well of water, at the time of evening, toward the time the women went out to draw water. 12 And he said, “O Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show loyal love to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are going out to draw water. 14 And let it be that the girl to whom I shall say, ‘Please, offer your jar that I may drink’ and who says, ‘Drink—and I will also water your camels,’ she is the one you have chosen for your servant, for Isaac. By her I will know that you have shown loyal love to my master.” 15 And it happened that before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah—who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, the brother of Abraham—came out, and her jar was on her shoulder. 16 Now the girl was very pleasing in appearance. She was a virgin; no man had known her. And she went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her. And he said, “Please, let me drink a little of the water from your jar.” 18 And she said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly lowered her jar in her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When[e] she finished giving him a drink she said, “I will also draw water for your camels until they finish drinking.” 20 And she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water. And she drew water for all his camels. 21 And the man was gazing at her silently to know if Yahweh had made his journey successful or not. 22 And it happened that as the camels finished drinking the man took a gold ring of a half shekel in weight and two bracelets for her arms, ten shekels in weight, 23 and said, “Please tell me, whose daughter are you? Is there a place at the house of your father for us to spend the night?” 24 And she said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” 25 Then she said to him, “We have both straw and fodder in abundance, as well as a place to spend the night.” 26 And the man knelt down and worshiped Yahweh. 27 And he said, “Blessed be Yahweh, God of my master Abraham, who has not withheld[f] his loyal love and his faithfulness from my master. I was on the way and Yahweh led me to the house of my master’s brother.” 28 Then the girl ran and reported these things to the household of her mother.
29 Now Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. And Laban ran out to the man toward the spring. 30 And when he saw the ring and the bracelets on the arms of his sister and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, who said, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man. And behold, he was standing with the camels at the spring. 31 And he said, “Come, O blessed one of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? Now I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” 32 And the man came to the house and unloaded the camels. And he gave straw and fodder to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. 33 And food was placed before him[g] to eat. And he said, “I will not eat until I have told my errand.”[h] And he said, “Speak.” 34 And he said, “I am the servant of Abraham. 35 Now Yahweh has blessed my master exceedingly, and he has become great. He has given to him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, male slaves and female slaves, and camels and donkeys. 36 And Sarah, the wife of my master, has borne a son to my master after her old age. And he[i] has given to him all that he has. 37 And my master made me swear, saying, ‘Do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I am living. 38 But you shall go to the house of my father, and to my family, and you shall take a wife for my son.’ 39 And I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow[j] me.’ 40 And he said to me, ‘Yahweh, before whom I have walked, shall send his angel with you and will make your journey successful. And she went down to the spring and drew water. And if not, tell me, so that I may turn to the right or to the left.”[p] 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, and they said, “The matter has gone out from Yahweh; we are not able to speak bad or good to you. 51 Here is Rebekah before you. Take her and go; let her be a wife for the son of your master as Yahweh has spoken.” 52 And it happened that when the servant of Abraham heard their words he bowed down to the ground to Yahweh. 53 And the servant brought out silver jewelry and gold jewelry, and garments, and he gave them to Rebekah. And he gave precious gifts to her brother and to her mother. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night. And they got up in the morning, and he said, “Let me go to my master.” 55 And her brother and her mother said, “Let the girl remain with us ten days or so; after that she may go.” 56 And he said to them, “Do not delay me. Now, Yahweh has made my journey successful. Let me go. I must go to my master.” 57 And they said, “Let us call the girl and ask her opinion.”[q] 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” And she said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and the servant of Abraham and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “You are our sister; may you become countless thousands; and may your offspring take possession of the gate of his enemies.” 61 And Rebekah and her maidservants arose, and they mounted the camels and followed[r] the man. And the servant took Rebekah and left.
62 Now Isaac was coming from the direction of Beer-Lahai-Roi. And he was living in the land of the Negev. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field early in the evening,[s] and he lifted up his eyes and saw—behold, camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes and saw Isaac. And she got down from the camel. 65 And she said to the servant, “Who is this man walking around in the field to meet us?” And the servant said, “That is my master.” And she took her[t] veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother. And he took Rebekah, and she became his wife. And Isaac loved her and was comforted after the death of his mother.

24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor.
25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in.
26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the Lord.
27 And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the house of my master's brethren.
28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother's house these things.
29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.
30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister's hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.

45 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
46 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I drank, and she made the camels drink also.
47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, the daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the Lord, and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master's brother's daughter unto his son.
49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, as the Lord hath spoken.
52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard their words, he worshipped the Lord, bowing himself to the earth.
53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things.
54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.
55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master.
57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.
58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go.
59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham's servant, and his men.
60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them.
61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.
62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country.
63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming.
