⁵⁵ Israelite Commanders Defeated at Jamnia. While Judas and Jonathan were in Gilead and Simon their brother was in Galilee outside Ptolemais, ⁵⁶ Joseph, son of Zechariah, and Azariah, the commanders of the army, heard about their valiant deeds and the heroic battles that they had fought, ⁵⁷ and they said, “Let us also make a name for ourselves by going out to fight against the Gentiles in our area.”
