Geschenken voor de tempel

29 David wendde zich tot het volk en zei: ‘Mijn zoon Salomo, die God tot volgende koning van Israël heeft gekozen, is nog jong en onervaren en de taak die voor hem ligt, is zwaar. De tempel die hij gaat bouwen, is namelijk niet zomaar een gebouw, het is bedoeld voor de Here God. 2 Uit alle bronnen die ik tot mijn beschikking had, heb ik zoveel mogelijk materialen gehaald die nodig zijn voor de bouw: voldoende goud, zilver, koper, ijzer, hout, grote hoeveelheden chrysopraas, andere kostbare stenen in allerlei kleuren, kostbare edelstenen en marmer. 3 Hierbij doe ik een schenking: omdat ik zo graag wil dat het huis van mijn God er komt geef ik alles, wat ik persoonlijk aan goud en zilver bezit, weg voor de bouw. Dat voeg ik bij de materialen die ik al heb verzameld. 4,5 Die persoonlijke gift omvat negentigduizend kilo goud uit Ofir en tweehonderdtien ton puur zilver, dat moet worden gebruikt om de muren van de gebouwen mee te overtrekken. Verder zal dit worden gebruikt voor de gouden en zilveren voorwerpen en voor de kunstige versieringen. En wie volgt mijn voorbeeld? Wie wil uit zijn bezittingen een bijdrage aan de Here geven?’

6,7 De familiehoofden en de stamhoofden, de legerofficieren en de hoge ambtenaren van de koning schonken honderdvijftig ton goud, een groot bedrag aan buitenlandse munten en driehonderdduizend kilo zilver. Daar kwamen nog vijfhonderdveertig ton koper en drieduizend ton ijzer bij. 8 Tevens gaven zij een grote hoeveelheid sieraden die onder de hoede van Jehiël, een nakomeling van Gerson, in de schatkamer van het huis van de Here werd ondergebracht. 9 Iedereen was opgewonden en blij door deze mogelijkheid iets voor het huis te doen en koning David was diep ontroerd over hun bereidheid zoveel af te staan. 10 In het bijzijn van de hele vergadering drukte David zijn dankbaarheid jegens de Here met de volgende woorden uit: ‘O Oppermachtige Here, God van onze vader Israël, uw naam zij voor altijd en eeuwig geprezen! 11 Van U is al de macht, de glorie, de overwinning en de majesteit. Alles in de hemel en op aarde is van U, Here. En dit is uw koninkrijk. Wij vereren U als degene die alles in handen heeft. 12 Rijkdom en eer komt van U alleen en U bent de Heerser over de hele wereld, uw hand heeft de macht en de kracht en op uw bevel worden mensen groot en ontvangen zij kracht. 13 O, onze God, wij danken U en prijzen uw heerlijke naam. 14 Want wie ben ik en wie zijn mijn onderdanen, dat zij iets aan U zouden mogen geven? Alles wat wij bezitten, is immers van U afkomstig en wij kunnen U alleen dat geven, wat allang van U is! 15 Want wij zijn hier maar voor een ogenblik, als vreemdelingen en mensen die op doorreis zijn, net zoals onze voorouders waren. Onze dagen op aarde zijn als een schaduw die snel verdwijnt, we hebben geen zekerheid. 16 O Here, onze God, al deze gaven die wij bijeen hebben gebracht om een huis voor uw heilige naam te bouwen, komen van U. Het is allemaal van U! 17 Ik weet, mijn God, dat U het hart van mensen op de proef stelt om te zien of zij oprecht zijn, want U ziet graag oprechte mensen. Ikzelf heb dit alles met een oprecht hart gedaan en ik heb gezien hoe uw volk zijn geschenken gewillig en met blijdschap gaf. 18 Here, God van onze voorouders Abraham, Isaak en Israël! Maak dat uw volk U altijd wil gehoorzamen en zorg ervoor dat hun liefde voor U nooit bekoelt. 19 Geef mijn zoon Salomo een onverdeeld en toegewijd hart, zodat hij U tot in de kleinste dingen wil gehoorzamen en met alle inspanning zal werken aan de voltooiing van dit gebouw, waarvoor ik al deze voorbereidingen heb getroffen.’

20 Toen zei David tegen alle aanwezigen: ‘Prijs de Here, uw God.’ En diep buigend voor de Here en hun koning prezen zij de God van hun vaderen. 21 De volgende dag brachten zij duizend jonge stieren, duizend rammen en duizend lammeren als brandoffers voor de Here. Verder brachten zij drankoffers en nog vele andere soorten offers namens heel Israël. 22 Vol blijdschap vierden zij die dag een feestmaal voor de Here. En opnieuw kroonden zij koning Davids zoon Salomo tot koning. Voor het oog van de Here zalfden zij hem tot hun vorst en Zadok zalfden zij tot priester. 23 Zo werd Salomo opvolger van zijn vader David. Hij kende grote voorspoed en heel Israël gehoorzaamde hem. 24 De leiders van het volk, de legerofficieren en zijn broers beloofden hem allemaal trouw. 25 En de Here maakte hem erg geliefd bij zijn onderdanen en gaf hem meer rijkdom en eer dan alle koningen van Israël voor hem. 26,27 David was veertig jaar koning van Israël, zeven jaar regeerde hij in Hebron en drieëndertig jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. 28 Hij stierf op hoge leeftijd, rijk en beroemd. Zijn zoon Salomo volgde hem op.

29 Uitvoerige levensbeschrijvingen van koning David zijn opgenomen in het verhaal van de profeet Samuël, in de geschiedenis beschreven door de profeet Nathan en in de geschiedenis die de profeet Gad beschreef. 30 Die vertellen over zijn bewind, zijn macht en alles wat met hem en Israël en de omringende landen en hun koningen gebeurde.

Offerings for Building the Temple

29 Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: “My son Solomon, whom alone God has (A)chosen, is (B)young and inexperienced; and the work is great, because the [a]temple is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, (C)onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance. 3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver: 4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of (D)Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; 5 the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is (E)willing to [b]consecrate himself this day to the Lord?”

6 Then (F)the leaders of the fathers’ houses, leaders of the tribes of Israel, the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with (G)the officers over the king’s work, (H)offered willingly. 7 They gave for the work of the house of God five thousand talents and ten thousand darics of gold, ten thousand talents of silver, eighteen thousand talents of bronze, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 And whoever had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the house of the Lord, into the hand of (I)Jehiel[c] the Gershonite. 9 Then the people rejoiced, for they had offered willingly, because with a loyal heart they had (J)offered willingly to the Lord; and King David also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Praise to God

10 Therefore David blessed the Lord before all the assembly; and David said:

“Blessed are You, Lord God of Israel, our Father, forever and ever.
11 (K)Yours, O Lord, is the greatness,
The power and the glory,
The victory and the majesty;
For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours;
Yours is the kingdom, O Lord,
And You are exalted as head over all.
12 (L)Both riches and honor come from You,
And You reign over all.
In Your hand is power and might;
In Your hand it is to make great
And to give strength to all.

13 “Now therefore, our God,
We thank You
And praise Your glorious name.
14 But who am I, and who are my people,
That we should be able to offer so willingly as this?
For all things come from You,
And [d]of Your own we have given You.
15 For (M)we are [e]aliens and [f]pilgrims before You,
As were all our fathers;
(N)Our days on earth are as a shadow,
And without hope.

16 “O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build You a house for Your holy name is from Your hand, and is all Your own. 17 I know also, my God, that You (O)test the heart and (P)have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now with joy I have seen Your people, who are present here to offer willingly to You. 18 O Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the intent of the thoughts of the heart of Your people, and fix their heart toward You. 19 And (Q)give my son Solomon a loyal heart to keep Your commandments and Your testimonies and Your statutes, to do all these things, and to build the [g]temple for which (R)I have made provision.”

20 Then David said to all the assembly, “Now bless the Lord your God.” So all the assembly blessed the Lord God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and prostrated themselves before the Lord and the king.

Solomon Anointed King(S)

21 And they made sacrifices to the Lord and offered burnt offerings to the Lord on the next day: a thousand bulls, a thousand rams, a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and (T)sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 So they ate and drank before the Lord with great gladness on that day. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and (U)anointed him before the Lord to be the leader, and Zadok to be priest. 23 Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the leaders and the mighty men, and also all the sons of King David, (V)submitted[h] themselves to King Solomon. 25 So the Lord exalted Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and (W)bestowed on him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

The Close of David’s Reign

26 Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 (X)And the period that he reigned over Israel was forty years; (Y)seven years he reigned in Hebron, and thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem. 28 So he (Z)died in a good old age, (AA)full of days and riches and honor; and Solomon his son reigned in his place. 29 Now the acts of King David, first and last, indeed they are written in the [i]book of Samuel the seer, in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer, 30 with all his reign and his might, (AB)and the events that happened to him, to Israel, and to all the kingdoms of the lands.

29 ¶ Furthermore, David, the king, said unto all the congregation, Only Solomon, my son, has God chosen; he is young and tender, and the work is great, for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God, gold for the things of gold, and silver for the things of silver, and brass for the things of brass, and iron for the things of iron, and wood for the things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, black stones and of different colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.

3 Moreover, because I have my delight in the house of my God, I have in my own treasury, gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the house of the sanctuary:

4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses;

5 the gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of the workmen. And who then is willing to consecrate the offering of his hands today unto the LORD?

6 Then the princes of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the princes of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offered willingly

7 and gave for the service of the house of God five thousand talents of gold and ten thousand daily wages and ten thousand talents of silver and eighteen thousand talents of brass and one hundred thousand talents of iron.

8 And each one gave the precious stones that they had to the treasure of the house of the LORD, into the hand of Jehiel, the Gershonite.

9 Then the people rejoiced to have offered willingly because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD. Likewise, David the king rejoiced with great joy

10 ¶ and blessed the LORD before all the congregation; and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.

11 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the honour, for all things in the heavens and in the earth are thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

12 The riches and the glory are before thee, and thou dost reign over all, and in thy hand is power and might and in thy hand the greatness and the strength of all things.

13 Now, therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.

14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? For all things come of thee and of thine own have we given thee.

15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers; our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no other hope.

16 O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee a house for thy holy name comes of thy hand and is all thy own.

17 I know also, my God, that thou dost try the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things; and now have I seen with joy that thy people, who are present here, have given willingly unto thee.

18 O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep for ever this purpose in the thoughts of the heart of thy people and prepare their heart unto thee.

19 Likewise, give unto Solomon, my son, a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for which I have made provision.

20 Then David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers and bowed down and worshipped before the LORD and the king.

21 And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the next day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.

22 And they ate and drank before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon, the son of David, king the second time and anointed him unto the LORD as ruler and Zadok as priest.

23 ¶ Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David, his father, and was prospered; and all Israel heard him.

24 And all the princes and the mighty men and all the sons likewise of King David, submitted themselves unto Solomon, the king.

25 And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel and bestowed upon him such glory of the kingdom as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

26 Thus David, the son of Jesse, reigned over all Israel.

27 And the time that he reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and he reigned thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and glory; and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.

29 Now the acts of David, the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel, the seer, and in the book of Nathan, the prophet, and in the book of Gad, the seer,

30 with all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him and over Israel and over all the kingdoms of the lands.

Gifts for Building the Temple

29 Then King David said to the whole assembly: “My son Solomon, the one whom God has chosen, is young and inexperienced.(A) The task is great, because this palatial structure is not for man but for the Lord God. 2 With all my resources I have provided for the temple of my God—gold(B) for the gold work, silver for the silver, bronze for the bronze, iron for the iron and wood for the wood, as well as onyx for the settings, turquoise,[a](C) stones of various colors, and all kinds of fine stone and marble—all of these in large quantities.(D) 3 Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided(E) for this holy temple: 4 three thousand talents[b] of gold (gold of Ophir)(F) and seven thousand talents[c] of refined silver,(G) for the overlaying of the walls of the buildings, 5 for the gold work and the silver work, and for all the work to be done by the craftsmen. Now, who is willing to consecrate themselves to the Lord today?”

6 Then the leaders of families, the officers of the tribes of Israel, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and the officials(H) in charge of the king’s work gave willingly.(I) 7 They(J) gave toward the work on the temple of God five thousand talents[d] and ten thousand darics[e] of gold, ten thousand talents[f] of silver, eighteen thousand talents[g] of bronze and a hundred thousand talents[h] of iron. 8 Anyone who had precious stones(K) gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite.(L) 9 The people rejoiced at the willing response of their leaders, for they had given freely and wholeheartedly(M) to the Lord. David the king also rejoiced greatly.

David’s Prayer

10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord,
    the God of our father Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting.
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power(N)
    and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
    for everything in heaven and earth is yours.(O)
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
    you are exalted as head over all.(P)
12 Wealth and honor(Q) come from you;
    you are the ruler(R) of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
    to exalt and give strength to all.
13 Now, our God, we give you thanks,
    and praise your glorious name.

14 “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this?(S) Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.(T) 15 We are foreigners and strangers(U) in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow,(V) without hope. 16 Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. 17 I know, my God, that you test the heart(W) and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you.(X) 18 Lord, the God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you. 19 And give my son Solomon the wholehearted devotion(Y) to keep your commands, statutes and decrees(Z) and to do everything to build the palatial structure for which I have provided.”(AA)

20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.

Solomon Acknowledged as King(AB)

21 The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him:(AC) a thousand bulls, a thousand rams and a thousand male lambs, together with their drink offerings, and other sacrifices in abundance for all Israel.(AD) 22 They ate and drank with great joy(AE) in the presence of the Lord that day.

Then they acknowledged Solomon son of David as king a second time, anointing him before the Lord to be ruler and Zadok(AF) to be priest. 23 So Solomon sat(AG) on the throne(AH) of the Lord as king in place of his father David. He prospered and all Israel obeyed him. 24 All the officers and warriors, as well as all of King David’s sons,(AI) pledged their submission to King Solomon.

25 The Lord highly exalted(AJ) Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal splendor(AK) such as no king over Israel ever had before.(AL)

The Death of David(AM)

26 David son of Jesse was king(AN) over all Israel.(AO) 27 He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron(AP) and thirty-three in Jerusalem.(AQ) 28 He died(AR) at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.(AS)

29 As for the events of King David’s reign, from beginning to end, they are written in the records of Samuel the seer,(AT) the records of Nathan(AU) the prophet and the records of Gad(AV) the seer, 30 together with the details of his reign and power, and the circumstances that surrounded him and Israel and the kingdoms of all the other lands.
