The Lord had warned Israel about women from other nations. He had said, “You must not marry them. If you do, you can be sure they will turn your hearts toward their gods.” But Solomon continued to love them anyway. He wouldn’t give them up. He had 700 wives who came from royal families. And he had 300 concubines. His wives led him astray. As Solomon grew older, his wives turned his heart toward other gods. He didn’t follow the Lord his God with all his heart. So he wasn’t like his father David.

They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry(A) with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines,(B) and his wives led him astray.(C) As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods,(D) and his heart was not fully devoted(E) to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.
