Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is God's child. And everyone who loves the Father loves his child.

This is how we know we love God's children. We love God and we obey his laws.

We show that we love God when we obey his laws. His laws are not hard to obey.

Everyone who is God's child wins a victory over the world. We win because we believe God.

Who wins a victory over the world? It is only the person who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

There was water and there was blood when Jesus Christ came. There was not water only, but there was water and there was blood. The Spirit proves this is true, because the Spirit is true.

There are three in heaven who prove it is true. They are the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. These three are one.

There are three on earth who prove it is true. They are the spirit, the water, and the blood. These three all prove the same thing.

We believe what people prove to us. But when God proves something it is stronger than what people prove. This is what God proved about his Son.

10 Anyone who believes in God's Son believes what God says about him. Anyone who does not believe God shows that he thinks what God says is not true. He has not believed what God says about his Son.

11 Here is what God says. He has given us life that will last for ever. And this life is in his Son.

12 So anyone who has the Son has this life. Anyone who does not have the Son of God does not have this life.

13 I have written these things to you who believe on the name of the Son of God. I have written them so that you will know that you will live for ever.

14 And we are sure God will do this. If we ask him for anything that he wants us to have, he will listen to us.

15 And if we know he listens to us when we ask for anything, then we know that we have what we asked him for.

16 Maybe a man sees his brother do something wrong, but not so bad that he must die for it. The man should ask God and God will let his brother live. God will let people live if the things they have done are not so bad that they must die for them. But there are things so wrong that a person must die for them. If he has done such as that, I do not tell the man to ask God to let him live.

17 Everything that is wrong is a bad thing. But not every bad thing is so wrong that a person must die for it.

18 We know that any child of God does not do wrong things. The Son of God keeps him safe and the devil cannot touch him.

19 We know that we belong to God and the whole world belongs to the devil.

20 We know that the Son of God has come. He has given us a heart to know him who is true. We belong to him who is true, because we belong to his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God. He has the life that will live for ever.

21 My children, have nothing to do with false gods or idols.

Footnotes

Obedience by Faith

Whoever believes that (A)Jesus is the Christ is (B)born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and (C)keep His commandments. (D)For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And (E)His commandments are not burdensome. For (F)whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that (G)has overcome the world—[a]our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but (H)he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The Certainty of God’s Witness

This is He who came (I)by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. (J)And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness [b]in heaven: the Father, (K)the Word, and the Holy Spirit; (L)and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: (M)the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

If we receive (N)the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; (O)for this is the witness of [c]God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God (P)has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God (Q)has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 (R)He who has the Son has [d]life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, [e]and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Confidence and Compassion in Prayer

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that (S)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and (T)He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. (U)There is sin leading to death. (V)I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 (W)All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

Knowing the True—Rejecting the False

18 We know that (X)whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God (Y)keeps[f] [g]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are of God, and (Z)the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

20 And we know that the (AA)Son of God has come and (AB)has given us an understanding, (AC)that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. (AD)This is the true God (AE)and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and every one that loveth Him that begot, loveth Him also that is begotten by Him.

By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.

For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not grievous.

For whosoever is born of God overcometh the world. And this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is He that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

For there are three that bear record in Heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one.

And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, and the water, and the blood; and these three agree in one.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater, for this is the witness of God which He hath testified of His Son.

10 He that believeth in the Son of God hath the witness in himself; he that believeth not God hath made Him a liar, because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son.

11 And this is the record: that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

12 He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son hath not life.

13 These things I have written unto you that believe in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.

14 And this is the confidence that we have in Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He heareth us.

15 And if we know that He hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.

16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask and He shall give him life, for those who sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death. I do not say that he shall pray about it.

17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not unto death.

18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not, but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

20 And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given us an understanding, that we may know Him that is true; and we are in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and Eternal Life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
