¹⁶ And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love.^(A) Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.^(B)

²⁴ The one who keeps God’s commands^(A) lives in him,^(B) and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.^(C)

3 See what great love^(A) the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!^(B) And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.^(C)

¹⁶ This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.^(A) And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.^(B)

⁸ Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.^{(A) 9} This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son^(B) into the world that we might live through him.^{(C) 10} This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us^(D) and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.^(E)
