The Nature of True Apostleship
4 This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants(A) of Christ and as those entrusted(B) with the mysteries(C) God has revealed. 2 Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 3 I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. 4 My conscience(D) is clear, but that does not make me innocent.(E) It is the Lord who judges me.(F) 5 Therefore judge nothing(G) before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes.(H) He will bring to light(I) what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.(J)
6 Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.”(K) Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.(L) 7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive?(M) And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?
8 Already you have all you want! Already you have become rich!(N) You have begun to reign—and that without us! How I wish that you really had begun to reign so that we also might reign with you! 9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die(O) in the arena. We have been made a spectacle(P) to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. 10 We are fools for Christ,(Q) but you are so wise in Christ!(R) We are weak, but you are strong!(S) You are honored, we are dishonored! 11 To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless.(T) 12 We work hard with our own hands.(U) When we are cursed, we bless;(V) when we are persecuted,(W) we endure it; 13 when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage(X) of the world—right up to this moment.
Paul’s Appeal and Warning
14 I am writing this not to shame you(Y) but to warn you as my dear children.(Z) 15 Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father(AA) through the gospel.(AB) 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me.(AC) 17 For this reason I have sent to you(AD) Timothy,(AE) my son(AF) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.(AG)
18 Some of you have become arrogant,(AH) as if I were not coming to you.(AI) 19 But I will come to you very soon,(AJ) if the Lord is willing,(AK) and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of(AL) talk but of power.(AM) 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline,(AN) or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?

4 U moet ons zien als dienstknechten van Christus, als beheerders van Gods geheimen. 2 Een eerste voorwaarde voor een beheerder is dat hij betrouwbaar is. 3 Nu maakt het voor mij niet uit welk oordeel u of anderen over mij hebben. Ik heb niet eens een oordeel over mijzelf! 4 Want al ben ik mij van geen kwaad bewust, de enige die mij kan beoordelen, is de Here. 5 Sta dus niet met uw oordeel klaar. Laat dat rusten tot de Here komt. Hij zal alles wat zich in de duisternis afspeelt, aan het licht brengen, en Hij zal laten zien wat er in ieders hart omgaat. Dan zal Hij iedereen de eer geven die hem toekomt.
6 Ik heb dit op Apollos en mijzelf toegepast, vrienden, om u een voorbeeld te geven. Ik hoop dat u van ons leert om u te houden aan wat geschreven staat en om iets bescheidener te zijn. Door over de één hoog op te geven, doet u de ander tekort. 7 Wat maakt u beter dan een ander? U heeft toch niets van uzelf? Alles wat u hebt, hebt u gekregen. Waar beroemt u zich dan op? 8 U schijnt te denken dat u geestelijk al verzadigd bent. Als rijke koningen zit u op uw troon. Ja, was u maar koningen! Dan zouden wij samen met u regeren. 9 Soms denk ik wel eens dat God ons, apostelen, de laagste plaats heeft toegewezen, als gevangenen die de dood in de armen lopen. Want in de arena van de wereld zijn wij een schouwspel geworden voor engelen en mensen. Wat een tegenstelling tussen u en ons! 10 Wij zijn dwaas ter wille van Christus, maar u bent verstandige gelovigen. Wij zijn zwak, maar u bent sterk. U staat hoog in aanzien, maar wij worden veracht. 11 Tot op dit moment lijden wij honger en dorst, wij hebben nauwelijks kleding en worden mishandeld. Wij hebben nergens een thuis 12 en doen zwaar werk met onze handen. De mensen die ons uitschelden, wensen wij het beste toe, vervolging verdragen wij geduldig, 13 wij blijven vriendelijk als over ons wordt geroddeld. Wij zijn het afval van de wereld geworden, het uitschot. En daar lijkt geen verandering in te komen.
14 Mijn beste vrienden, ik schrijf dit niet om u een gevoel van schaamte te geven, maar om u terecht te wijzen. 15 Want al zijn er duizenden die u in Christus verder opvoeden, u hebt niet veel vaders. Ik ben uw geestelijke vader. Ik heb u het leven met Jezus Christus binnengeleid. 16 Daarom smeek ik u: volg mijn voorbeeld.
17 Daarom heb ik ook Timotheüs naar u toegestuurd. Hij is voor mij als een eigen kind, een trouw dienaar van de Here. Hij zal u eraan herinneren hoe ik voor Jezus Christus leef en welk onderwijs ik in elke gemeente geef. 18 Sommigen denken dat ik niet naar u toe kom en blazen hoog van de toren. 19 Maar binnenkort kom ik bij u, als de Here het goed vindt. Dan wil ik wel eens zien of die grootsprekers ook iets presteren. 20 Want waar God werkt, is het niet een kwestie van woorden, maar van kracht. 21 Wat hebt u liever? Dat ik met straf bij u kom of met liefde en zachtheid?

4 So, you should regard us as the Messiah’s servants, as trustees of God’s secret truths. 2 Now the one thing that is asked of a trustee is that he be found trustworthy. 3 And it matters very little to me how I am evaluated by you or by any human court; in fact, I don’t even evaluate myself. 4 I am not aware of anything against me, but this does not make me innocent. The one who is evaluating me is the Lord. 5 So don’t pronounce judgment prematurely, before the Lord comes; for he will bring to light what is now hidden in darkness; he will expose the motives of people’s hearts; and then each will receive from God whatever praise he deserves.
6 Now in what I have said here, brothers, I have used myself and Apollos as examples to teach you not to go beyond what the Tanakh says, proudly taking the side of one leader against another. 7 After all, what makes you so special? What do you have that you didn’t receive as a gift? And if in fact it was a gift, why do you boast as if it weren’t? 8 You are glutted already? You are rich already? You have become kings, even though we are not? Well, I wish you really were kings, so that we might share the kingship with you! 9 For I think God has been placing us emissaries on display at the tail of the parade, like men condemned to die in the public arena: we have become a spectacle before the whole universe, angels as well as men. 10 For the Messiah’s sake we are fools, but united with the Messiah you are wise! We are weak, but you are strong; you are honored, but we are dishonored. 11 Till this very moment we go hungry and thirsty, we are dressed in rags, we are treated roughly, we wander from place to place, 12 we exhaust ourselves working with our own hands for our living. When we are cursed, we keep on blessing; when we are persecuted, we go on putting up with it; 13 when we are slandered, we continue making our appeal. We are the world’s garbage, the scum of the earth — yes, to this moment!
14 I am not writing you this to make you feel ashamed, but, as my dear children, to confront you and get you to change. 15 For even if you have ten thousand trainers in connection with the Messiah, you do not have many fathers; for in connection with the Messiah Yeshua it was I who became your father by means of the Good News. 16 Therefore I urge you to imitate me. 17 This is why I have sent you Timothy, my beloved and trustworthy child in the Lord. He will remind you of the way of life I follow in union with the Messiah Yeshua and teach everywhere in every congregation.
18 When I didn’t come to visit you, some of you became arrogant. 19 But I am coming to you soon, if the Lord wills; and I will take cognizance not of the talk of these arrogant people but of their power. 20 For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of words but of power. 21 Which do you prefer — should I come to you with a stick? or with love in a spirit of gentleness?
