The Resurrection of Christ

Chapter 15

The Risen Christ, Foundation of Our Faith.[b] And now, brethren, I want to remind you of the gospel I proclaimed to you, which you received and in which you stand firm. Through it you are also being saved, provided that you are holding fast to what I proclaimed to you. If not, then you have believed in vain.

[c]For I handed on to you as of primary importance what I received: that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried and that he was raised to life on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, and later to the Twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brethren at one time, most of whom are still alive, although some have fallen asleep.[d] After that he appeared to James,[e] and then to all the apostles.

Last of all, he appeared to me, as to one born abnormally. For I am the least of the apostles. I am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the Church of God. 10 However, by the grace of God I am what I am, and the grace he has bestowed upon me has not proved to be fruitless. Indeed, I have worked harder than any of them—although that should not be credited to me but to the grace of God within me. 11 But whether it was I or they, this is what we preach and what you have come to believe.

The Resurrection of the Dead

12 The Resurrection and Faith.[f] Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is useless, and so is your faith. 15 We are even false witnesses to God, for we testified that he raised Christ when he did not raise him up, assuming it is true that the dead are not raised.

16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is without any foundation, and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ are utterly lost. 19 If it is for just this life that we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable of all men.

20 Christ, the Firstfruits.[g] But Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came into the world through a man, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a man.

22 Just as in Adam all die, so all will be brought to life in Christ, 23 but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward, at his coming, those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every sovereignty and authority and power.[h] 25 For he is destined to reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 For he has put all things under his feet. But when it says “all things are put under,” it is obvious that this excludes the one who subjected everything to him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who made all things subject to him, so that God may be all in all.

29 Practical Faith. Otherwise, what will people accomplish when they have themselves baptized for the dead?[i] If the dead are not raised at all, why should anyone be baptized for them? 30 And why should we be placing ourselves in danger every hour? 31 I face death every day—that is as sure as the pride that I have in you, brethren, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

32 With only human hopes, what would I have gained by fighting those wild beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised,

“Let us eat and drink,
    for tomorrow we die.”

33 Do not let anyone lead you astray. “Bad company corrupts good morals.” 34 Come to your senses and sin no more. For some of you have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

The Mode of the Resurrection

35 The Resurrected Body. Someone may ask, “How are the dead raised? What sort of body will they have when they come back?” 36 This is foolish. What you sow must die before it is given new life, 37 and what you sow is not the body that is to be but a bare grain of wheat or of something else. 38 God gives to it a body that he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own particular body.

39 Not all flesh is alike. There is one kind for human beings, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are both heavenly bodies and earthly bodies. The splendor of heavenly bodies is of one kind, and that of earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has a splendor of its own, the moon another splendor, and the stars still another. Indeed, the stars differ among themselves in splendor.

42 So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 What is sown in dishonor is raised as glorious. What is sown in weakness is raised in power. 44 What is sown is a physical body; what is raised is a spiritual body.

The Natural and the Spiritual Body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 As it is written, the first man, Adam, became a living being; the last Adam has become a lifegiving spirit. 46 But the spiritual body did not come first. Rather the natural body came first, and then the spiritual.

47 The first man was formed from the dust of the earth; the second man is from heaven. 48 The man formed from dust is the pattern for earthly people; the heavenly man is the pattern for those who are of heaven. 49 Just as we have borne the image of the man formed from dust, so shall we also bear the likeness of the heavenly one.

50 Where, O Death, Is Your Victory?[j] What I am asserting, brethren, is that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can the perishable inherit what is imperishable.

51 Listen while I tell you a mystery. We shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed 52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the sound of the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.[k] 53 For this perishable body must be clothed with the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.

54 When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then will the words that are written be fulfilled:

“Death has been swallowed up in victory.
55     Where, O death, is your victory?
    Where, O death, is your sting?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. 57 But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, stand firm and immovable, devoting yourselves completely to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:1 According to Greek thought, the soul is imprisoned in the body; it alone is destined for immortality, and death comes to set it free. As heirs of this mentality, the Corinthians are unable to understand why there should be a resurrection of the body. Does Christianity perhaps desire that the soul again become a prisoner? Paul corrects this notion, which is not in accord with the Christian faith.
    The biblical tradition holds that the human being is one, created by God in body and soul. Death does not constitute the deliverance of the soul, but the unraveling of this unity. It is a violent state produced by sin. In atoning for sin, Christ has conquered death. It is the whole person that is saved and the whole person that is involved in the resurrection. But Paul takes account of the objection that the Greeks can bring up: the resurrection is not a simple return to the earthly condition; the risen body does not limit the aspirations of the spirit. It will be “spiritual,” a new creation in the risen Christ.
  2. 1 Corinthians 15:1 Paul takes as his starting point a fact: the resurrection of Christ. This is the primordial certainty of the Christian faith. He recalls this teaching of the Church and confirms it by listing the witnesses who had seen the risen Christ. In this passage, we find the main elements of the Christian creed and, at the same time, the earliest written witness to the handing on of the original teaching of the Church and to the appearances of Jesus Christ.
  3. 1 Corinthians 15:3 Paul offers two lines of testimony for Christ’s Passion and Resurrection: (1) the testimony of the Old Testament (e.g., Ps 16:8-11; Isa 53:5f, 11) and (2) the testimony of eyewitnesses (Acts 1:21f). He lists only six appearances of the risen Christ; the Gospels and Acts offer ten (see note on Mt 28:10).
  4. 1 Corinthians 15:6 Have fallen asleep: an image of death. The same expression is used in vv. 18, 20, and 51, and is the usual one in the New Testament. In it, Christians indirectly expressed their faith in the resurrection (in Greek the same verb means both “to awaken” and “to bring back to life”). From this phrase, we also derive our word “cemetery,” i.e., literally, a place of sleepers.
  5. 1 Corinthians 15:7 Appeared to James: Paul inserts the risen Lord’s appearance to James as a kind of transition to his own experience of seeing Christ. Like Paul, James, “the brother of the Lord” (Gal 1:19), had not been a disciple of Jesus (see Acts 1:12f). An account of such an appearance to James is found in the Gospel of the Hebrews, an apocryphal Jewish-Christian gospel.
  6. 1 Corinthians 15:12 The Resurrection of Jesus, to which the apostles are witnesses, is the basic proof that there is a resurrection of the dead; the Old Testament initially voiced a hope of this (Ps 16:10; Job 19:25; Ezek 37:10) and later taught it explicitly (2 Mac 7:9). The Resurrection of Jesus is thus the very foundation of our faith; Christ is the firstborn of the dead, who will rise in their turn.
  7. 1 Corinthians 15:20 Paul contrasts two states of the human race: on the one side, the fallen state of sin, symbolized by Adam; on the other, the state of life and salvation brought about by Christ (see Rom 5:17-21).
  8. 1 Corinthians 15:24 Sovereignty and authority and power: these words signify all the forces, angelic and human, that are opposed to the Kingdom of God (see 1 Cor 2:6; Col 2:15).
  9. 1 Corinthians 15:29 Baptized for the dead (v. 29) refers to a rite, unknown to us, a type of baptism by proxy. Paul uses the image of wild beasts (v. 32) to express the hostility he encountered at Ephesus. In v. 33 he is citing Menander, a Greek comic poet, although by this time the saying may already have become a popular proverb.
  10. 1 Corinthians 15:50 Using images traditional in the Bible, Paul describes in a few lines the great day of universal salvation, when humanity reaches its destiny.
  11. 1 Corinthians 15:52 The trumpet was part of apocalyptic choreography (see Mt 24:31; 1 Thes 4:16); it symbolized the solemn proclamation of the divine plan (see the seven trumpets of the Book of Revelation: 8:6-12; 9:1-21; 11:15-19).

The Resurrection of Christ

15 Now I would remind you, brothers,[a] of the gospel (A)I preached to you, which you received, (B)in which you stand, and by which (C)you are being saved, if you (D)hold fast to the word I preached to you—(E)unless you believed in vain.

For (F)I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died (G)for our sins (H)in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised (I)on the third day (J)in accordance with the Scriptures, and that (K)he appeared to Cephas, then (L)to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to (M)James, then (N)to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, (O)he appeared also to me. For (P)I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because (Q)I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. The Resurrection of the Dead

12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, (T)how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (U)then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that (V)he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and (W)you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who (X)have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope[b] in this life only, (Y)we are of all people most to be pitied.

20 But in fact (Z)Christ has been raised from the dead, (AA)the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as (AB)by a man came death, (AC)by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For (AD)as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then (AE)at his coming (AF)those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers (AG)the kingdom to God the Father after destroying (AH)every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign (AI)until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be (AJ)destroyed is death. 27 For (AK)“God[c] has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When (AL)all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that (AM)God may be all in all.

29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf? 30 Why are we (AN)in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by (AO)my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (AP)I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, (AQ)I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, (AR)“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” 33 (AS)Do not be deceived: (AT)“Bad company ruins good morals.”[d] 34 (AU)Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. The Resurrection Body

35 But someone will ask, (AX)“How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?” 36 You foolish person! (AY)What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. 39 For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish. 40 There are heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is of one kind, and the glory of the earthly is of another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.

42 (AZ)So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor; (BA)it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. Mystery and Victory

50 I tell you this, brothers: (BK)flesh and blood (BL)cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. (BM)We shall not all sleep, (BN)but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For (BO)the trumpet will sound, and (BP)the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and (BQ)this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

    O death, where is your sting?”

The Risen Christ, Faith’s Reality(A)

The Risen Christ, Our Hope(R)

12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, (S)then Christ is not risen. 14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. 15 Yes, and we are found false witnesses of God, because (T)we have testified of God that He raised up Christ, whom He did not raise up—if in fact the dead do not rise. 16 For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; (U)you are still in your sins! 18 Then also those who have [c]fallen (V)asleep in Christ have perished. 19 (W)If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.

The Last Enemy Destroyed

20 But now (X)Christ is risen from the dead, and has become (Y)the firstfruits of those who have [d]fallen asleep. 21 For (Z)since by man came death, (AA)by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall (AB)be made alive. 23 But (AC)each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers (AD)the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign (AE)till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 (AF)The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For (AG)“He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 (AH)Now when all things are made subject to Him, then (AI)the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

Effects of Denying the Resurrection

29 Otherwise, what will they do who are baptized for the dead, if the dead do not rise at all? Why then are they baptized for the dead? 30 And (AJ)why do we stand in [e]jeopardy every hour? 31 I affirm, by (AK)the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, (AL)I die daily. 32 If, in the manner of men, (AM)I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, (AN)“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

33 Do not be deceived: (AO)“Evil company corrupts good habits.” 34 (AP)Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; (AQ)for some do not have the knowledge of God. (AR)I speak this to your shame.

A Glorious Body

35 But someone will say, (AS)“How are the dead raised up? And with what body do they come?” 36 Foolish one, (AT)what you sow is not made alive unless it dies. 37 And what you sow, you do not sow that body that shall be, but mere grain—perhaps wheat or some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body.

39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind [f]of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds.

40 There are also [g]celestial bodies and [h]terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory.

42 (AU)So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. 43 (AV)It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, (AW)“The first man Adam became a living being.” (AX)The last Adam became (AY)a life-giving spirit.

46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. 47 (AZ)The first man was of the earth, (BA)made[i] of dust; the second Man is [j]the Lord (BB)from heaven. 48 As was the [k]man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; (BC)and as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. 49 And (BD)as we have borne the image of the man of dust, (BE)we[l] shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

Our Final Victory

50 Now this I say, brethren, that (BF)flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a [m]mystery: (BG)We shall not all sleep, (BH)but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. (BI)For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and (BJ)this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: (BK)“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

55 “O(BL)[n] Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and (BM)the strength of sin is the law. 57 (BN)But thanks be to God, who gives us (BO)the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

58 (BP)Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing (BQ)that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

Allt beror på om Kristus har uppstått

15 Bröder, låt mig nu få påminna er om vad de goda nyheterna handlar om. De har verkligen inte förändrats utan är samma goda nyheter som jag tidigare har gett er. Ni var öppna för dem då och det är ni också nu. Er tro är ju ett resultat av dem.

Och det är genom dem ni har blivit frälsta, om ni nu fortfarande håller fast vid er tro. Annars har ju allt varit bortkastat.

Från första början förmedlade jag till er vad jag själv fått kunskap om, nämligen att Kristus dog för våra synder, precis som Skriften sa att han skulle göra,

och att han begravdes, och att han uppstod från graven tre dagar senare, alldeles som profeterna hade förutsagt.

Petrus såg honom, och senare såg också resten av de tolv honom.

Efter det såg mer än femhundra kristna bröder honom på samma gång, och de flesta av dem lever fortfarande.

Sedan såg Jakob honom, och därefter alla apostlarna.

Sist av alla såg också jag honom, långt efter de andra, som om jag hade blivit född nästan alltför sent för att uppleva det.

Jag är den minst värdige av alla apostlarna, ja, jag borde inte alls kallas apostel, med tanke på hur jag tidigare behandlade Guds församling.

10 Men vad jag nu än är, så är jag det därför att Gud slösade en sådan förlåtelse och nåd på mig - och det inte utan resultat, för jag har arbetat mer intensivt än alla de andra apostlarna. Och ändå är det inte jag som har gjort det, utan Gud som har arbetat i mig för att välsigna mig.

11 Det spelar ingen roll vem som har arbetat mest intensivt, jag eller de, det viktiga är att vi har predikat de goda nyheterna för er, och att ni har trott dem.

Vår uppståndelse

12 Men säg mig nu, eftersom ni tror vad vi predikar, nämligen att Kristus uppstod från de döda, varför säger en del av er att det inte finns någon uppståndelse?

13 För om det inte finns någon uppståndelse från de döda, måste ju Kristus fortfarande vara död.

14 Och om han fortfarande är död, är allt det vi predikat meningslöst och er tro på Gud tom, värdelös och hopplös.

15 Alla vi apostlar är i så fall lögnare, eftersom vi har sagt att Gud väckte upp Kristus från de döda.

16 Om det inte finns någon uppståndelse, då är Kristus alltjämt död,

17 och er tro är meningslös, och ni är fortfarande kvar i era synder.

18 Om det är på det sättet har alla kristna som dött gått förlorade.

19 Och om det bara har sitt värde i att vara kristen under livet här på jorden, så är vi de olyckligaste av alla varelser.

20 Men faktum är att Kristus verkligen uppstod från de döda och har blivit den förste av alla de som en dag ska uppstå.

21 Döden kom in i världen genom vad en människa, nämligen Adam, gjorde. Men genom en annan människa, Kristus, kom uppståndelsen från de döda.

22 Vi är alla släkt med Adam, och därför kommer vi att dö, för överallt där det finns synd, där blir döden följden. Men alla som är släkt med Kristus kommer att få nytt liv,

23 men i tur och ordning. Kristus uppstod först, och när sedan Kristus kommer tillbaka ska allt hans folk uppstå.

24 Efter detta ska slutet komma, då Kristus överlämnar riket till Gud, Fadern, sedan han krossat alla sina fiender.

25 För Kristus ska vara kung tills han har besegrat alla sina fiender,

26 också den siste fienden - döden. Denne måste också övervinnas och förintas.

27 Kristus har av Fadern fått välde och makt över allting, men härskar naturligtvis inte över Fadern själv, som gav honom denna makt att regera.

28 När Kristus slutligen har vunnit striden mot alla sina fiender, då kommer han, Guds Son, att också ställa sig under sin Fars överhöghet, så att Gud, som har gett honom seger över allt annat, blir den ende härskaren.

29 Vad är det för mening med att låta döpa sig för de döda, om de döda inte kommer tillbaka till livet? Varför ska man göra det, om man inte tror att de döda ska uppstå en dag?

30 Varför skulle vi själva ständigt riskera våra liv och se döden i vitögat gång på gång?

31 Det är ett faktum att jag utsätts för dödsfara dagligen, det är lika sant som att jag är stolt över att ni växer till i Herren.

32 Och vad låg det för värde i att slåss med vilddjuren i Efesos, om det bara gäller något för livet här nere? Om vi inte ska leva efter det att vi har dött, så kan vi lika gärna ägna oss åt att ha roligt, äta och dricka och vara glada! Vad spelar då allt annat för roll? I morgon ska vi ju dö, och då är det slut på allt!

33 Men låt er inte luras av dem som säger så. Om ni lyssnar på dem, så börjar ni snart också handla som de.

34 Var förnuftiga och sluta synda. För till er skam måste jag säga att några av er inte alls är kristna och aldrig har känt Gud.

Jordiska och himmelska kroppar

35 Men någon kanske frågar: Hur kommer de döda att uppstå? Vilket slags kroppar kommer de att få?

36 Vilken dum fråga! Du kan finna svaret i din egen trädgård. När du sår ett sädeskorn i marken, växer det inte upp och blir till en planta om det inte dör först.

37 När det gröna skottet kommer upp ur jorden är det mycket olikt säden som du först sådde, för det enda du lägger i jorden är ett obetydligt litet vetekorn, eller vad det nu är, som du sår.

38 Sedan ger Gud det en ny, vacker kropp av precis det slag som han vill att det ska ha, och olika slags plantor kommer från olika slags frön.

39 Och alldeles som det finns olika slags säd och plantor, så finns det också olika slags kroppar. Mänskliga varelser, djur, fiskar och fåglar är alla olika.

40 Änglarna i himlen har kroppar som är mycket olika våra, och deras skönhet är en annan än vår.

41 Solen har en skönhet och månen och stjärnorna en annan. Och stjärnorna skiljer sig från varandra i skönhet och klarhet.

42 På samma sätt är våra jordiska kroppar, som dör och förmultnar, annorlunda än de kroppar vi ska få när vi kommer tillbaka till livet, för de ska aldrig dö.

43 De kroppar som vi har nu är dödliga och begravs därför, men de uppstår till odödlighet.

44 Nu är de svaga, döende kroppar, men när vi får liv igen kommer de att vara fyllda av skönhet och styrka. När döden rör vid dem nu är de bara mänskliga kroppar, men när de uppstår ska de vara övernaturliga kroppar. För alldeles som det finns naturliga, mänskliga kroppar, så finns det också övernaturliga, andliga kroppar.

45 Skriften säger oss att den förste mannen, Adam, blev en levande varelse, men Kristus blev en livgivande ande, och är därför större.

46 Först har vi alltså dessa mänskliga kroppar, och senare ger Gud oss andliga, himmelska kroppar.

47 Adam skapades av jordens mull, men Kristus kom från himlen.

48 Varje mänsklig varelse har en kropp precis som Adam hade, skapad av jord, men alla som blir Kristi tillhörigheter kommer att få samma slags kropp som han ä en kropp fr¦n himlen.

49 Alldeles som var och en av oss har en likadan kropp som Adam hade, så kommer vi en dag att få en likadan kropp som Kristus har.

50 En jordisk kropp av kött och blod kan alltså inte komma in i Guds rike. Våra kroppar, som ju alla ska dö, är inte av det rätta slaget för att leva i evighet.

51 Ni ska få del av en hemlighet. Alla av oss kommer inte att dö, men vi ska alla få nya kroppar!

52 Det kommer att hända på ett ögonblick, när den sista basunen ljuder. För det ska höras en basunstöt från himlen, och alla de kristna som har dött kommer plötsligt att bli levande med nya kroppar som aldrig kommer att dö. Sedan ska vi som fortfarande lever, också i ett ögonblick få nya kroppar.

53 Våra jordiska kroppar, de som vi nu har och som en gång dör, måste förvandlas till himmelska kroppar, som inte kan förstöras utan ska leva i evighet.

54 När detta händer kommer det ord i Skriften att uppfyllas som säger: Döden är besegrad och finns inte mer.

55-56 Död, var är då din seger och var är då din makt? För dödens makt kommer av synden, och syndens makt kommer av lagen.

57 Vi prisar Gud för segern över döden! Det är han som ger seger genom Jesus Kristus, vår Herre!

58 Mina kära bröder, eftersom den framtida segern är viss, ska ni därför vara starka och stå fasta och hängivet arbeta för Herren, för ni vet att inget som ni gör för Herren är bortkastat.
