Regels voor profetie en talen van de Geest in de bijeenkomsten
14 Doe je uiterste best om vol te zijn van deze liefde. Verlang ook naar de gaven van de Geest. Vooral naar het profeteren. 2 Want als je in een taal van de Geest spreekt, praat je niet tegen mensen, maar tegen God. Want niemand begrijpt het. Door de Geest spreek je verborgen dingen. 3 Maar als je profeteert, zeg je dingen die het geloof van de mensen opbouwen. Het moedigt hen aan en spreekt hun moed in. 4 Als je in een taal van de Geest spreekt, bouw je jezelf op. Maar als je profeteert, bouw je de gemeente op. 5 Ik wil graag dat jullie allemaal in talen van de Geest spreken. Maar ik wil nog veel liever dat jullie profeteren. Want als iemand profeteert, is dat op dat moment nuttiger en belangrijker dan een boodschap in een taal van de Geest. Maar als iemand die in een taal van de Geest spreekt ook uitlegt wat hij zegt, is dat ook goed. Want dan bouwt het ook de gemeente op.
6 Stel, broeders en zusters, dat ik bij jullie op bezoek kom en tegen jullie alleen in een taal van de Geest spreek. Wat hebben jullie daaraan? Want jullie verstaan het niet. Het is toch beter als ik jullie iets vertel wat God mij pas heeft laten zien, of jullie dingen leer die jullie nog niet weten, of voor jullie profeteer, of les geef over het Woord? 7 Het is net als bij muziekinstrumenten. Stel dat bijvoorbeeld een fluit en een harp hetzelfde geluid maken. Hoe kun je dan weten wat er op de fluit en wat er op de harp gespeeld wordt? 8 En stel dat de trompet een onduidelijk geluid maakt. Dan maakt niemand zich klaar voor de strijd. 9 Zo is het ook met jullie. Als jullie in talen van de Geest onbegrijpelijke dingen zeggen, heeft niemand er iets aan. Dan zou het zijn alsof jullie zomaar wat in de lucht staan te praten.
10 Er zijn heel veel soorten talen in de wereld. Niemand weet hoeveel er zijn. En elke taal heeft zijn eigen woorden. 11 Als ik de woorden van iemands taal niet ken, zal ik een vreemdeling zijn voor de persoon die spreekt. En de spreker zal voor mij een vreemdeling zijn. Want we begrijpen elkaar niet. 12 Jullie verlangen naar geestelijke gaven. Maar probeer dan zoveel mogelijk díe gaven te gebruiken die het geloof van de gemeente opbouwen. 13 Iemand die tegen de gemeente in een taal van de Geest spreekt, moet dus ook bidden dat hij het zal kunnen uitleggen. 14 Want als ik in een taal van de Geest spreek, bidt mijn geest wel, maar mijn verstand heeft er niets aan. 15 Wat moet ik dus doen? Ik moet bidden met mijn geest, maar ook bidden met mijn verstand. Ik moet God prijzen met liederen van mijn geest, maar Hem ook prijzen met liederen van mijn verstand. 16 Want stel dat jullie God danken in een taal van de Geest. Hoe kan dan iemand anders die daar is er "Amen! Zo is het!" op zeggen? Hij weet immers niet wat er gezegd is! 17 Want jullie danken dan wel op een goede manier, maar de anderen hebben er niets aan. 18 Ik dank God dat ik meer dan jullie allemaal in talen van de Geest spreek. 19 Maar in de gemeente wil ik liever vijf woorden met mijn verstand spreken zodat ook anderen er iets aan hebben, dan duizenden woorden in een taal van de Geest.
20 Broeders en zusters, wees niet onvolwassen in je denken. Wees wél onervaren in het doen van slechte dingen. 21 In de Boeken staat: "Door mensen met een andere taal en door de mond van vreemdelingen zal Ik tot dit volk spreken. Maar toch zullen ze niet naar Mij luisteren, zegt de Heer." 22 Dus de talen van de Geest zijn een teken. Niet voor de mensen die al geloven, maar voor de ongelovigen. Maar profetie is niet voor de ongelovigen, maar voor de gelovigen.
23 Aan de andere kant: stel dat er in een bijeenkomst van de gemeente ongelovige mensen binnen komen. Als ze iedereen dan alleen in talen van de Geest horen spreken, zullen ze denken dat jullie gek zijn. 24 Maar stel dat iedereen profeteert en er komt een ongelovige binnen. Dan wordt hij er door die mensen van overtuigd dat hij een schuldig mens is en zal hij tot geloof komen. 25 Want zijn diepste geheimen komen aan het licht. En hij zal zich op zijn knieën laten vallen en God aanbidden. Hij zal zeggen dat God inderdaad bij jullie aanwezig is.
26 Wat moeten jullie dus doen, broeders en zusters? Elke keer als jullie samenkomen, hebben jullie allemaal iets van de Heer gekregen om met de andere mensen te delen. De één komt met een lied. Een ander legt iets uit over het Woord. Weer een ander vertelt iets wat God hem heeft laten zien. En weer een ander spreekt in een taal van de Geest en legt uit wat hij zegt. Maar alles moet zó gebeuren, dat de anderen er iets aan hebben.
27 Als mensen iets in een taal van de Geest willen zeggen, mogen dat er maar twee of drie zijn. Ze moeten om de beurt spreken. En iemand moet het uitleggen. 28 Als er niemand is die het kan uitleggen, moeten ze ook niet tegen de gemeente in talen van de Geest spreken. Ze mogen dan wel voor zichzelf tegen God in een taal van de Geest spreken.
29 Wat betreft de profeten: twee of drie mogen profeteren tot de gemeente. De anderen moeten nagaan of het klopt. 30 Maar als God aan iemand anders die daar is plotseling iets laat zien, moeten de anderen hun mond houden. 31 Op die manier kunnen jullie allemaal één voor één profeteren. Dan hebben alle mensen er iets aan en worden ze erdoor aangemoedigd en opgebouwd. 32 De profeten zijn de baas over hun eigen geest, dus ze kunnen zwijgen als dat nodig is. 33 Want God is geen God van wanorde, maar van vrede.
34 Zoals ook in alle andere gemeenten moeten de vrouwen hun mond houden in de dienst. Ze mogen niet zitten praten. Ze moeten gehoorzaam en bescheiden blijven tegenover hun man, want hij is het hoofd, zoals dat in de Romeinse wet staat.[a] 35 En als ze iets willen weten, moeten ze het thuis aan hun man vragen. Want het is niet netjes voor een vrouw om in de dienst te zitten praten.
36 Broeders en zusters, het woord van God is toch niet bij jullie in Korinte begonnen? En het is toch niet alleen voor júllie? 37 Vinden jullie van jezelf dat jullie profeten en geestelijke mensen zijn? Goed, dan zullen jullie ook kunnen inzien dat wat ik hier zeg een bevel van de Heer is. 38 Maar als mensen dit niet serieus nemen, hoeven wij hen ook niet serieus te nemen. Dan zijn ze dwaas bezig.
39 Dus, broeders en zusters, verlang ernaar om te profeteren. Houd het spreken in talen van de Geest niet tegen. 40 Maar zorg er wel voor dat alles rustig en ordelijk gebeurt.

- 1 Corinthiërs 14:34 Griekenland, en dus ook de stad Korinte, was veroverd door de Romeinen. Daarom golden daar de Romeinse wetten, en niet langer de Griekse. Volgens de Romeinse wetten van die tijd had een vrouw heel wat minder rechten dan tegenwoordig. Zo mocht ze bijvoorbeeld nergens haar handtekening onder zetten. Haar man moest tekenen. Ook had ze niets te zeggen over het geld. Al het geld was van haar man, ook als zij bij haar trouwen geld van zichzelf had. Haar man was in alles het hoofd. Prophecy and Tongues
14 (A)Pursue love, and (B)earnestly desire the (C)spiritual gifts, especially that you may (D)prophesy. 2 For (E)one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but (F)even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
6 Now, brothers,[a] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some (G)revelation or knowledge or prophecy or (H)teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? 8 And (I)if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be (J)speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be (K)a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? 20 Brothers, (P)do not be children in your thinking. (Q)Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be (R)mature. 21 (S)In the Law it is written, (T)“By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign[c] not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, (U)will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 (V)the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, (W)falling on his face, he will worship God and (X)declare that God is really among you.

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has (Y)a hymn, (Z)a lesson, (AA)a revelation, (AB)a tongue, or (AC)an interpretation. (AD)Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in (AE)a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others (AF)weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, (AG)let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of (AH)confusion but of peace.
As in (AI)all the churches of the saints, 34 (AJ)the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but (AK)should be in submission, as (AL)the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 (AM)If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, (AN)earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 (AO)But all things should be done decently and (AP)in order.

Need for Interpretation.[e] 13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray to be able to interpret. 14 [For] if I pray in a tongue, my spirit[f] is at prayer but my mind is unproductive. 15 So what is to be done? I will pray with the spirit, but I will also pray with the mind. I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will also sing praise with the mind.(C) 16 Otherwise, if you pronounce a blessing [with] the spirit, how shall one who holds the place of the uninstructed say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks very well, but the other is not built up. 18 I give thanks to God that I speak in tongues more than any of you, 19 but in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind, so as to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Functions of These Gifts. 20 [g]Brothers, stop being childish in your thinking. In respect to evil be like infants, but in your thinking be mature.(D) 21 It is written in the law:
“By people speaking strange tongues
and by the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people,
and even so they will not listen to me,(E)
says the Lord.” 22 Thus, tongues are a sign not for those who believe but for unbelievers, whereas prophecy is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.
23 [h]So if the whole church meets in one place and everyone speaks in tongues, and then uninstructed people or unbelievers should come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?(F) 24 But if everyone is prophesying, and an unbeliever or uninstructed person should come in, he will be convinced by everyone and judged by everyone, 25 and the secrets of his heart will be disclosed, and so he will fall down and worship God, declaring, “God is really in your midst.”(G)
Rules of Order. 26 [i]So what is to be done, brothers? When you assemble, one has a psalm, another an instruction, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Everything should be done for building up.(H) 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let it be two or at most three, and each in turn, and one should interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, the person should keep silent in the church and speak to himself and to God.
29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others discern. 30 But if a revelation is given to another person sitting there, the first one should be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged. 32 Indeed, the spirits of prophets are under the prophets’ control, 33 since he is not the God of disorder but of peace.
As in all the churches of the holy ones,[j] 34 women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says.(I) 35 But if they want to learn anything, they should ask their husbands at home. For it is improper for a woman to speak in the church. 36 Did the word of God go forth from you? Or has it come to you alone?
37 If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or a spiritual person, he should recognize that what I am writing to you is a commandment of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not acknowledge this, he is not acknowledged. 39 So, [my] brothers, strive eagerly to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues, 40 but everything must be done properly and in order.

- 14:1–5 1 Cor 14:1b returns to the thought of 1 Cor 12:31a and reveals Paul’s primary concern. The series of contrasts in 1 Cor 14:2–5 discloses the problem at Corinth: a disproportionate interest in tongues, with a corresponding failure to appreciate the worth of prophecy. Paul attempts to clarify the relative values of those gifts by indicating the kind of communication achieved in each and the kind of effect each produces.
- 14:2–3a They involve two kinds of communication: tongues, private speech toward God in inarticulate terms that need interpretation to be intelligible to others (see 1 Cor 14:27–28); prophecy, communication with others in the community.
- 14:3b–5 They produce two kinds of effect. One who speaks in tongues builds himself up; it is a matter of individual experience and personal perfection, which inevitably recalls Paul’s previous remarks about being inflated, seeking one’s own good, pleasing oneself. But a prophet builds up the church: the theme of “building up” or “edifying” others, the main theme of the letter, comes to clearest expression in this chapter (1 Cor 14:3, 4, 5, 12, 17). It has been anticipated at 1 Cor 8:1 and 1 Cor 10:23, and by the related concept of “the beneficial” in 1 Cor 6:12; 10:23; 12:7; etc.
- 14:6–12 Sound, in order to be useful, must be intelligible. This principle is illustrated by a series of analogies from music (1 Cor 14:7–8) and from ordinary human speech (1 Cor 14:10–11); it is applied to the case at hand in 1 Cor 14:9, 12.
- 14:13–19 The charism of interpretation lifts tongues to the level of intelligibility, enabling them to produce the same effect as prophecy (cf. 1 Cor 14:5, 26–28).
- 14:14–15 My spirit: Paul emphasizes the exclusively ecstatic, nonrational quality of tongues. The tongues at Pentecost are also described as an ecstatic experience (Acts 2:4, 12–13), though Luke superimposes further interpretations of his own. My mind: the ecstatic element, dominant in earliest Old Testament prophecy as depicted in 1 Sm 10:5–13; 19:20–24, seems entirely absent from Paul’s notion of prophecy and completely relegated to tongues. He emphasizes the role of reason when he specifies instruction as a function of prophecy (1 Cor 14:6, 19, 31). But he does not exclude intuition and emotion; cf. references to encouragement and consolation (1 Cor 14:3, 31) and the scene describing the ideal exercise of prophecy (1 Cor 14:24–25).
- 14:20–22 The Corinthians pride themselves on tongues as a sign of God’s favor, a means of direct communication with him (2:28). To challenge them to a more mature appraisal, Paul draws from scripture a less flattering explanation of what speaking in tongues may signify. Isaiah threatened the people that if they failed to listen to their prophets, the Lord would speak to them (in punishment) through the lips of Assyrian conquerors (Is 28:11–12). Paul compresses Isaiah’s text and makes God address his people directly. Equating tongues with foreign languages (cf. 1 Cor 14:10–11), Paul concludes from Isaiah that tongues are a sign not for those who believe, i.e., not a mark of God’s pleasure for those who listen to him but a mark of his displeasure with those in the community who are faithless, who have not heeded the message that he has sent through the prophets.
- 14:23–25 Paul projects the possible missionary effect of two hypothetical liturgical experiences, one consisting wholly of tongues, the other entirely of prophecy. Uninstructed (idiōtai): the term may simply mean people who do not speak or understand tongues, as in 1 Cor 14:16, where it seems to designate Christians. But coupled with the term “unbelievers” it may be another way of designating those who have not been initiated into the community of faith; some believe it denotes a special class of non-Christians who are close to the community, such as catechumens. Unbelievers (apistoi): he has shifted from the inner-community perspective of 1 Cor 14:22; the term here designates non-Christians (cf. 1 Cor 6:6; 7:15; 10:27).
- 14:26–33a Paul concludes with specific directives regarding exercise of the gifts in their assemblies. Verse 26 enunciates the basic criterion in the use of any gift: it must contribute to “building up.”
- 14:33b–36 Verse 33b may belong with what precedes, so that the new paragraph would begin only with 1 Cor 14:34. 1 Cor 14:34–35 change the subject. These two verses have the theme of submission in common with 1 Cor 14:11 despite differences in vocabulary, and a concern with what is or is not becoming; but it is difficult to harmonize the injunction to silence here with 1 Cor 11 which appears to take it for granted that women do pray and prophesy aloud in the assembly (cf. 1 Cor 11:5, 13). Hence the verses are often considered an interpolation, reflecting the discipline of later churches; such an interpolation would have to have antedated our manuscripts, all of which contain them, though some transpose them to the very end of the chapter.

Good Order in Worship
26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters?(AL) When you come together, each of you(AM) has a hymn,(AN) or a word of instruction,(AO) a revelation, a tongue(AP) or an interpretation.(AQ) Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.(AR) 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.
29 Two or three prophets(AS) should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.(AT) 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.(AU) 33 For God is not a God of disorder(AV) but of peace(AW)—as in all the congregations(AX) of the Lord’s people.(AY)
34 Women[f] should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,(AZ) but must be in submission,(BA) as the law(BB) says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.[g]
36 Or did the word of God(BC) originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet(BD) or otherwise gifted by the Spirit,(BE) let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command.(BF) 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored.[h]
39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager(BG) to prophesy,(BH) and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly(BI) way.
