David's Wives and Children

14 (A)And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. (B)These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: (C)Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, (D)Beeliada and (E)Eliphelet.

Philistines Defeated

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. Now the Philistines had come and (F)made a raid in the (G)Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through[a] my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 12 And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.

13 And the Philistines yet again (H)made a raid in the valley. 14 And when David again inquired of God, (I)God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the Lord brought the (J)fear of him upon all nations.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Chronicles 14:11 Baal-perazim means Lord of breaking through

14 And Huram king of Tyre sendeth messengers unto David, and cedar-wood, and artificers of walls, and artificers of wood, to build to him a house.

And David knoweth that Jehovah hath established him for king over Israel, because of the lifting up on high of his kingdom, for the sake of His people Israel.

And David taketh again wives in Jerusalem, and David begetteth again sons and daughters;

and these [are] the names of the children whom he hath in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,

and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Elpalet,

and Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

and Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

And the Philistines hear that David hath been anointed for king over all Israel, and all the Philistines go up to seek David, and David heareth, and goeth out before them.

And the Philistines have come, and rush into the valley of Rephaim,

10 and David asketh of God, saying, `Do I go up against the Philistines -- and hast Thou given them into my hand?' And Jehovah saith to him, `Go up, and I have given them into thy hand.'

11 And they go up into Baal-Perazim, and David smiteth them there, and David saith, `God hath broken up mine enemies by my hand, like the breaking up of waters;' therefore they have called the name of that place Baal-Perazim.

12 And they leave there their gods, and David speaketh, and they are burnt with fire.

13 And the Philistines add again, and rush into the valley,

14 and David asketh again of God, and God saith to him, `Do not go up after them, turn round from them, and thou hast come to them from over-against the mulberries;

15 and it cometh to pass, when thou hearest the sound of the stepping at the heads of the mulberries, then thou goest out into battle, for God hath gone out before thee to smite the camp of the Philistines.'

16 And David doth as God commanded him, and they smite the camp of the Philistines from Gibeon even unto Gazer;

17 and the name of David goeth out into all the lands, and Jehovah hath put his fear on all the nations.

14 1 Hiram sendeth wood and workmen to David. 4 The names of his children. 8, 14 By the counsel of God he goeth against the Philistines, and overcometh them. 15 God fighteth for him.

Then (A)sent Hiram the King of [a]Tyre messengers to David, and Cedar trees, with masons and carpenters to build him an house.

Therefore David knew that the Lord had confirmed him King over Israel, and that his kingdom was lift up on high, because of his [b]people Israel.

¶ Also David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David begat more sons and daughters.

And these are the names of the children which he had at Jerusalem, Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon,

And Ibhar, and Elishua, and [c]Elpelet,

And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

And Elishama, and [d]Beeliada, and Eliphelet.

But when the Philistines heard that David was anointed King over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David. And when David heard, he went out against them.

And the Philistines came, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

10 Then David asked counsel at God, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines, and wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the Lord said unto him, Go up: for I will deliver them into thine hand.

11 So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David smote them there: and David said, God hath divided mine enemies with mine hand, as waters are divided: therefore they called the name of that place, [e]Baal Perazim.

12 And there they had left their gods: and David said, Let them even be burnt with fire.

13 Again the Philistines came and spread themselves in the valley.

14 And when David asked again counsel at God, God said to him, Thou shalt not go up after them, but turn away from them, that thou mayest come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

15 And when thou hearest the noise of one going in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle: for God is gone forth before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

16 So David did as God had commanded him: and they smote the host of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer.

17 And the fame of David went out into all lands: and the Lord brought the fear of him upon all nations.

David’s Prestige Grows

14 King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David, along with cedar logs, stonemasons,[a] and carpenters to build a palace for him. David realized that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and that he had elevated[b] his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.

In Jerusalem David married[c] more wives and fathered more sons and daughters. These are the names of children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada,[d] and Eliphelet.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed[e] king of all Israel, all the Philistines marched up to confront him.[f] When David heard about it, he marched out against[g] them. Now the Philistines had come and raided[h] the Valley of Rephaim. 10 David asked God, “Should I march up against the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?” The Lord said to him, “March up! I will hand them over to you!” 11 So they marched against Baal Perazim and David defeated them there. David said, “Using me as his instrument,[i] God has burst out against my enemies like water bursts out.” So that place is called Baal Perazim.[j] 12 The Philistines left[k] their idols[l] there, so David ordered that they be burned.

13 The Philistines again raided the valley. 14 So David again asked God what he should do.[m] This time[n] God told him, “Don’t march up after them; circle around them and come against them in front of the trees.[o] 15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, then attack.[p] For at that moment God is going before you to strike down the army[q] of the Philistines.” 16 David did just as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer.

17 So David became famous[r] in all the lands; the Lord caused all the nations to fear him.[s]
