¹³ So Saul died ^(A)for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also ^(B)consulted a medium, seeking guidance. ¹⁴ He ^(C)did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord put him to death and ^(D)turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

⁶ Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together.

⁷ For ^(A)none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. ⁸ For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, ^(B)whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. ⁹ For to this end Christ ^(C)died and lived again, that he might be Lord both ^(D)of the dead and of the living.

¹⁰ Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For ^(E)we will all stand before ^(F)the judgment seat of God; ¹¹ for it is written,

¹² So then ^(H)each of us will give an account of himself to God.

³ Yet his sons did not walk in his ways ^(A)but turned aside after gain. ^(B)They took bribes and perverted justice.

⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at ^(C)Ramah ⁵ and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. ^(D)Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. ⁷ And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, ^(E)for they have not rejected you, ^(F)but they have rejected me from being king over them.
