⁵ When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back.”

³¹ When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.

³⁴ In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken by Joshua son of Nun.^(A)

²² But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

²⁴ Then they burned the whole city^(A) and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron^(B) into the treasury of the Lord’s house.^{(C) 25} But Joshua spared^(D) Rahab the prostitute,^(E) with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho^(F)—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.

²⁶ At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath:^(G) “Cursed^(H) before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
