⁴ And ^(A)these are the names of his children whom he had in Jerusalem: ^[a]Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,

^5 (A)And these were born to him in Jerusalem: ^[a]Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and ^(B)Solomon—four by ^[b]Bathshua the daughter of ^[c]Ammiel. ⁶ Also there were Ibhar, ^[d]Elishama, ^[e]Eliphelet, ⁷ Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, ⁸ Elishama, ^[f]Eliada, and Eliphelet—^(C)nine in all. ⁹ These were all the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines, and ^(D)Tamar their sister.

³¹ the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattathah, the son of ^(A)Nathan, ^(B)the son of David,

⁶ and ^(A)Jesse begot David the king.

^(B)David the king begot Solomon by her ^[a]who had been the wife of Uriah.

^5 (A)And of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) ^(B)He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. ⁶ Now He said to me, ‘It is ^(C)your son Solomon who shall build My house and My courts; for I have chosen him to be My son, and I will be his Father.

^9 (A)Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him ^(B)rest from all his enemies all around. His name shall be ^[a]Solomon, for I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days. ^10 (C)He shall build a house for My name, and ^(D)he shall be My son, and I will be his Father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’ ¹¹ Now, my son, may ^(E)the Lord be with you; and may you prosper, and build the house of the Lord your God, as He has said to you. ¹² Only may the Lord ^(F)give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the Lord your God.

^5 (A)At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon ^(B)in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”

^6 (C)And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he ^(D)walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You ^(E)have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a ^(F)little child; I do not know how ^(G)to go out or come in. ⁸ And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You ^(H)have chosen, a great people, ^(I)too numerous to be numbered or counted. ^9 (J)Therefore give to Your servant an ^[a]understanding heart ^(K)to judge Your people, that I may ^(L)discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

¹⁰ The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have ^(M)not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice,

³ And Solomon ^(A)loved the Lord, ^(B)walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.

¹⁵ Then he said, “You know that the kingdom was ^(A)mine, and all Israel had set their expectations on me, that I should reign. However, the kingdom has been turned over, and has become my brother’s; for ^(B)it was his from the Lord.
