Семья Элканы
1 Был некий человек из Раматаима, цуфит[a] из нагорий Ефраима, которого звали Элкана. Он был сыном Иерохама, сына Элиху, сына Тоху, сына Цуфа, и жил на земле, принадлежащей ефраимитам. 2 У Элканы было две жены. Одну звали Ханна, а другую – Фенанна. У Фенанны были дети, у Ханны же их не было.
3 Из года в год Элкана ходил из своего города в Шило, где находился священный шатёр, чтобы поклониться и принести жертву Вечному[b], Повелителю Сил. Хофни и Пинхас, два сына Илия, были там священнослужителями Вечного. 4 Всякий раз, когда Элкана приносил жертву, он давал часть жертвенного мяса своей жене Фенанне и всем её сыновьям и дочерям. 5 Но Ханне он давал двойную часть, потому что любил её, хотя Вечный и не давал ей детей. 6 И оттого что Вечный не давал Ханне детей, её соперница жестоко изводила и унижала её. 7 Так продолжалось из года в год. Всякий раз, когда Ханна ходила в дом Вечного, соперница изводила её, и та плакала и не ела.
8 Элкана говорил ей:
– Ханна, почему ты плачешь? Почему не ешь? Почему скорбит твоё сердце? Разве я не значу для тебя больше, чем десять сыновей?

9 Однажды, когда они уже поели и попили в Шило, Ханна встала. А священнослужитель Илий сидел у дверей святилища Вечного. 10 Скорбя душой, Ханна горько плакала и молилась Вечному. 11 Она дала обет, говоря:
– О Вечный, Повелитель Сил, если Ты только посмотришь на горе Своей рабыни и вспомнишь меня, если не забудешь Свою рабыню, но дашь ей сына, то я отдам его Тебе на всю его жизнь, и бритва никогда не коснётся его головы[c].
12 Пока она молилась Вечному, Илий следил за её губами. 13 Ханна молилась в сердце, её губы двигались, но голоса слышно не было. Илий подумал, что она пьяна, 14 и сказал ей:
– Долго ли ты ещё будешь пьяной? Протрезвись от вина!
15 – Нет, мой господин, – ответила Ханна, – я глубоко скорблю. Я не пила ни вина, ни пива. Я изливаю душу перед Вечным. 16 Не думай, что твоя рабыня – нечестивая женщина, я молилась здесь из-за великой боли и печали.
17 Илий ответил:
– Иди с миром, и пусть Бог Исраила даст тебе то, о чём ты Его просила.
18 Она сказала:
– Пусть твоя рабыня найдёт расположение в твоих глазах.
Затем она пошла своей дорогой, поела, и лицо её уже больше не было печально.
19 На следующее утро они встали рано, поклонились Вечному и пустились в обратный путь к себе домой, в Раму.
Элкана лёг со своей женой Ханной, и Вечный исполнил её просьбу. 20 Через некоторое время Ханна забеременела и родила сына. Она назвала его Шемуил («выпрошенный у Всевышнего»)[d], говоря: «Я назвала его так, потому что просила его у Вечного».

21 В следующий раз, когда Элкана вместе со всей своей семьёй отправился принести жертву Вечному и исполнить обет, 22 Ханна не пошла.
Она сказала мужу:
– После того как ребёнок будет отнят от груди, я отведу его в Шило, чтобы он предстал перед Вечным. Он останется там жить навсегда.
23 – Поступай, как тебе угодно, – сказал ей муж. – Оставайся здесь, пока не отнимешь его от груди. И пусть Вечный утвердит твоё слово.
Она оставалась дома и кормила своего сына до тех пор, пока не настало время отнимать его от груди. 24 После того как он был отнят от груди, она повела мальчика в Шило в дом Вечного. Ханна взяла с собой трёхлетнего быка[e], небольшой мешок[f] муки и бурдюк вина.
25 Заколов быка и взяв его, Ханна с мальчиком пришли к Илию, 26 и она сказала священнослужителю:
– Верно, как и то, что ты жив, мой господин, – я та самая женщина, которая стояла здесь, рядом с тобой, молясь Вечному. 27 Я молилась об этом ребёнке, и Вечный дал мне то, о чём я Его просила. 28 Теперь я отдаю его Вечному. Пусть он принадлежит Вечному всю его жизнь.
И они поклонились там Вечному.

1 En la región montañosa de Efraín había un hombre zufita de Ramatayin.[a] Su nombre era Elcaná, hijo de Jeroán, hijo de Eliú, hijo de Tohu, hijo de Zuf, efraimita. 2 Elcaná tenía dos esposas. Una de ellas se llamaba Ana y la otra, Penina. Esta tenía hijos, pero Ana no tenía ninguno.
3 Cada año Elcaná salía de su pueblo para adorar al Señor de los Ejércitos y ofrecerle sacrificios en Siló, donde Ofni y Finés, los dos hijos de Elí, oficiaban como sacerdotes del Señor. 4 Cuando llegaba el día de ofrecer su sacrificio, Elcaná solía dar a Penina y a todos sus hijos e hijas la porción que les correspondía. 5 Pero a Ana le daba una porción especial,[b] pues la amaba a pesar de que el Señor la había hecho estéril. 6 Penina, su rival, solía atormentarla para que se enojara, ya que el Señor la había hecho estéril. 7 Cada año, cuando iban a la casa del Señor, sucedía lo mismo: Penina la atormentaba, hasta que Ana se ponía a llorar y ni comer quería. 8 Entonces Elcaná, su esposo, decía: «Ana, ¿por qué lloras? ¿Por qué no comes? ¿Por qué estás afligida? ¿Acaso no soy para ti mejor que diez hijos?».
9 Estando en Siló, Ana se levantó después de haber comido y bebido. Y a la vista del sacerdote Elí, que estaba sentado en su silla junto a la puerta del santuario del Señor, 10 comenzó a orar al Señor con gran angustia y a llorar desconsoladamente. 11 Entonces hizo esta promesa: «Señor de los Ejércitos, si te dignas mirar la desdicha de esta sierva tuya, y si en vez de olvidarme te acuerdas de mí y me concedes un hijo varón, yo te lo entregaré para toda su vida y nunca se le cortará el cabello».
12 Como Ana estuvo orando largo rato ante el Señor, Elí se fijó en su boca. 13 Sus labios se movían, pero debido a que Ana oraba en voz baja, no se podía oír su voz. Elí pensó que estaba borracha, 14 así que dijo:
—¿Hasta cuándo te va a durar la borrachera? ¡Deja ya el vino!
15 —No, mi señor; no he bebido vino ni cerveza. Soy solo una mujer angustiada que ha venido a desahogarse delante del Señor. 16 No me tome usted por una mala mujer. He pasado este tiempo orando debido a mi angustia y aflicción.
17 —Vete en paz —respondió Elí—. Que el Dios de Israel te conceda lo que has pedido.
18 —Gracias. Ojalá favorezca usted siempre a esta sierva suya.
Con esto, Ana se despidió y se fue a comer. Desde ese momento, su semblante cambió.
19 Al día siguiente madrugaron y, después de adorar al Señor, volvieron a su casa en Ramá. Luego Elcaná se unió a su esposa Ana, y el Señor se acordó de ella. 20 Ana concibió y a su debido tiempo dio a luz un hijo, al que le puso por nombre Samuel,[c] pues dijo: «Al Señor se lo pedí».

21 Cuando Elcaná volvió a salir con toda su familia para cumplir su promesa y ofrecer su sacrificio anual al Señor, 22 Ana no lo acompañó.
—No iré hasta que el niño sea destetado —explicó a su esposo—. Entonces lo llevaré para dedicarlo al Señor y allí se quedará el resto de su vida.
23 —Bien, haz lo que te parezca mejor —respondió su esposo Elcaná—. Quédate hasta que lo destetes, con tal de que el Señor cumpla su palabra.
Así pues, Ana se quedó en su casa y crio a su hijo hasta que lo destetó.
24 Cuando dejó de amamantarlo, salió con el niño, a pesar de ser tan pequeño, y lo llevó a la casa del Señor en Siló. También llevó un novillo de tres años,[d] un efa[e] de harina y un odre de vino. 25 Luego sacrificaron el novillo y presentaron el niño a Elí. 26 Dijo Ana: «Mi señor, tan cierto como que usted vive, le aseguro que yo soy la mujer que estuvo aquí a su lado orando al Señor. 27 Este es el niño que yo pedí al Señor, y él me lo concedió. 28 Ahora yo, por mi parte, se lo entrego al Señor. Mientras el niño viva, estará dedicado a él». Entonces Elí[f] se postró allí ante el Señor.

The Birth of Samuel
1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)
17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”
18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)
19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]
23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
