王であるイエスが来る、その時のために
5 さて、教会のみんな。イエスがいつ戻って来るのか、何時にそれが起こるかなどを書く必要などないだろう。 2 知ってのとおり、王であるイエスが再び戻ってくる日は、夜中に忍び込む泥棒のように来るのであって、言い当てることなど出来ないのだ。 3 「いやぁ～、平和だ～、平穏だなぁー」と言っている時、突然、悲劇が起きたりする。まるで妊娠中の母親に陣痛がいきなり襲うかのように・・・そして、その悲劇から逃れることはできないのだ。
4 しかし、みんなは闇の中を生きている人たちではない。だから逆にあなた達は泥棒の様にその日が来ても驚くようなことはないだろう。 5 あなた達は皆、光と繋がっていて、光のもとを生きている。闇や夜のもとではなく真昼を生きている者たちだ。 6 だから闇を生きる人たちのように眠らず、自分を上手くコントロールして目を覚ましていなさい。 7 人間は夜になると眠る。また大酒飲みは夜になるとお酒を飲む。 8 しかし私たちは昼の世界に属しているからこそ、自分自身を上手くコントロールするべきなのだ。神への信頼とお互いを守る愛の鎧で身を固め、救いの兜をかぶって救いへの希望を持ち続けるのだ。
9 神は私たちを神の怒りで苦しめるために選んだのではなく、王であるイエス・キリストをとおして救いをもたらすために私たちを選んでくれた。 10 イエスがこの地に戻って来る時、私たちが生きていようが死んでいようがそんなことは大した問題ではない。イエスは私たちのために死に、そして私たちは彼と共に再び生きるということが重要なんだ。 11 だからこれから何があろうとも、今までどおりお互いを励まし合い、助け合い、確信を深めてほしい！
最後の説明と挨拶
12 さて、教会のみんな！私たちのお願いとして、あなた達の周りで、神のために心を尽くして働いている人たちに目を留め価値を置いてほしい。王であるイエスについていく者たち、みんなのリーダーとして仕える者たち、どのように信じる者として生きるべきなのかを教えてくれる者たちに目を留めてほしい。 13 イエスのために働く指導者たちに、彼らに最高の敬意と愛を払いなさい。そして互いに平安を保つこと・・・
14 教会のみんなにお願いをしたい。なまけ者には忠告し、怖がる者には励ましを。弱い者には手助けを、お互いみんなに忍耐を。 15 どんな人に対しても、悪に悪で返すようなことがないように。むしろ互いに、またどんな人に対しても善を行うように心がけるのだ。
16 いつでも喜びで溢れていること！ 17 絶えず祈って！ 18 何があっても、どんな時も、感謝の気持ちを切らさずに！これこそ神がイエス・キリストに属するあなた達に望んでいることなのだから。
19 聖霊の働きを止めることがないように。 20 預言者をどうでもいいように扱うのは止めなさい！ 21 全ての預言を拒まず、それが良い教えなのかどうか試してみればいい。そして、それが良いものなのであれば、それを受け取ればいいのだ。 22 それと同時にあらゆる種類の過ちから遠ざかりなさい。
23 私たちはこう祈っている。平和の神、彼ご自身があなた達を聖なる者としてくれるように・・・そして、神にのみ繋がりを持つことが出来るように・・・あぁ～みんなの霊、魂、そして体が守られるように・・・そして、王であるイエス・キリストが帰って来る時には、あなた達がどんな非難からも解放されるように。 24 あなた達を呼び集めたイエスが、あなた達のためにそれを起こしてくれる！だから、あなた達はイエスを信頼することが出来るのだ。
25 教会のみんな！私たちのために祈っていてくれ。 26 全ての兄弟、姉妹に対して心を込めた挨拶を送りなさい。 27 この手紙を全ての信じる仲間たちに読ませることを、王であるイエスの権威によって命じる。 28 王であるイエス・キリストの恵みがみんなと共にあるように。

The Day of the Lord
5 Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D) 3 While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(G)
4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(I) 5 You are all children of the light(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(K) but let us be awake(L) and sober.(M) 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.(N) 8 But since we belong to the day,(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,(P) and the hope of salvation(Q) as a helmet.(R) 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.(T) 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.(U) 11 Therefore encourage one another(V) and build each other up,(W) just as in fact you are doing.
Final Instructions
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard(X) among you, who care for you in the Lord(Y) and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.(Z) 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle(AA) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,(AB) be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,(AC) but always strive to do what is good for each other(AD) and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always,(AE) 17 pray continually,(AF) 18 give thanks in all circumstances;(AG) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit.(AH) 20 Do not treat prophecies(AI) with contempt 21 but test them all;(AJ) hold on to what is good,(AK) 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace,(AL) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul(AM) and body be kept blameless(AN) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(AO) 24 The one who calls(AP) you is faithful,(AQ) and he will do it.(AR)
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.(AS) 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.(AT) 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.(AU)
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.(AV)

5 But concerning (A)the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you yourselves know perfectly that (B)the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then (C)sudden destruction comes upon them, (D)as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. 4 (E)But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all (F)sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 (G)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but (H)let us watch and be [a]sober. 7 For (I)those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk (J)are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, (K)putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For (L)God did not appoint us to wrath, (M)but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (N)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
11 Therefore [b]comfort each other and [c]edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Various Exhortations
12 And we urge you, brethren, (O)to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and [d]admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. (P)Be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we [e]exhort you, brethren, (Q)warn those who are [f]unruly, (R)comfort the fainthearted, (S)uphold the weak, (T)be patient with all. 15 (U)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always (V)pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.
16 (W)Rejoice always, 17 (X)pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
19 (Y)Do not quench the Spirit. 20 (Z)Do not despise prophecies. 21 (AA)Test all things; (AB)hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
Blessing and Admonition
23 Now may (AC)the God of peace Himself (AD)sanctify[g] you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body (AE)be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is (AF)faithful, who also will (AG)do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this [h]epistle be read to all the [i]holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

5 愛する皆さん。それらがいつ起こるかについては、私は何も答える必要がありません。 2 その時を言い当てることができる人などいないことは、よくご存じのはずです。主の日は、夜中にこっそり忍び込む盗人のように、思いがけない時に来ます。 3 人々が、「万事順調で、平穏無事だ」と言っているような時、突然、災いが襲いかかるようにやって来ます。それはちょうど、出産の時、母親に陣痛が襲うのと似ています。その災いから逃れることができる人はいません。身を隠す場所など、どこにもないからです。
4 しかし、皆さん。あなたがたはこのことについて、皆目わからない暗闇の中にいるわけではないのですから、主の日が来ても、強盗に襲われたようにあわてふためくことはありません。 5 あなたがたはみな、光の子ども、真昼の子どもであって、暗闇や夜に属する者ではないからです。 6 ですから、ほかの人たちのように眠りこけないで、目を覚ましていなさい。主が再び来られる日に備えて、節度をもって生活しなさい。 7 夜、人々は眠り、また酔いつぶれます。 8 しかし、私たちは、昼の世界に生きる者らしく、信仰と愛のよろいで身を守り、救いの望みというかぶとをかぶり、慎しみ深く過ごしましょう。 9 神は、怒りを向けるために私たちをお選びになったのではなく、主イエス・キリストによって救うために選んでくださったのです。 10 主イエス・キリストの死は、〔主が再び来られた時、私たちの生死の状態にかかわりなく〕私たちを永遠に主と共に生かすためでした。 11 そういうわけですから、すでに実行しているように、互いに励まし合い、助け合いなさい。
気をつけるべきこと
12 皆さん。あなたがたの間で一生懸命働き、何かまちがいがあれば親身になって忠告してくれる人たちを尊敬しなさい。 13 その人たちは、何とかしてあなたがたの手助けをしようとしているのですから、彼らを認め、心から愛しなさい。くれぐれも言っておきますが、争いなど起こさないようにしてください。
14 愛する皆さん。なまけ者や手に負えない乱暴者には、きびしく注意しなさい。臆病な人を励まし、弱い人を思いやりなさい。そして、だれに対しても忍耐の心を持ちなさい。
15 悪をもって悪に仕返ししないように、気をつけなさい。かえっていつも、お互いの間で、またどんな人にも、善意を示すよう心がけなさい。
16 いつも喜びにあふれていなさい。
17 いつも祈りに励みなさい。
18 どんなことにも感謝しなさい。これこそ、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに望んでおられることです。
19 聖霊の恵みを無にしてはいけません。 20 預言する者を軽蔑してはいけません。 21 すべてのことをよく調べ、それがほんとうに良いものであれば、受け入れなさい。 22 あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。
23 どうか、平和の神が、あなたがたを完全にきよめてくださいますように。あなたがたの霊とたましいと体とが、いつも健全で、主イエス・キリストが再び来られる時、少しも非難されない者としてくださいますように。 24 あなたがたを招いてご自分の子どもとしてくださった神は、約束どおり、それらのことをなしてくださいます。
25 愛する皆さん。私たちのために祈ってください。
26 全員に、心からのあいさつを送ります。 27 この手紙を、すべてのクリスチャンが読むようにしてください。これは主の命令です。
28 どうか、主イエス・キリストから、あふれるほどの祝福があなたがたに注がれますように。
