4 is a conceited person who understands nothing and who has an unhealthy enthusiasm to engage in arguments and to dispute the meaning of words. From these come envy, dissension, slander, base suspicions, 5 and unending disputes among people whose minds are corrupted and who are deprived of truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain.
6 Godliness produces great gain, but only to those who are content.

4 they are conceited(A) and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words(B) that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth(C) and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
