The Day of the Lord

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D) While people are saying, “Peace and safety,”(E) destruction will come on them suddenly,(F) as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.(G)

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness(H) so that this day should surprise you like a thief.(I) You are all children of the light(J) and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep,(K) but let us be awake(L) and sober.(M) For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.(N) But since we belong to the day,(O) let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate,(P) and the hope of salvation(Q) as a helmet.(R) For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath(S) but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.(T) 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.(U) 11 Therefore encourage one another(V) and build each other up,(W) just as in fact you are doing.

Final Instructions

12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard(X) among you, who care for you in the Lord(Y) and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.(Z) 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle(AA) and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak,(AB) be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong,(AC) but always strive to do what is good for each other(AD) and for everyone else.

16 Rejoice always,(AE) 17 pray continually,(AF) 18 give thanks in all circumstances;(AG) for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.(AH) 20 Do not treat prophecies(AI) with contempt 21 but test them all;(AJ) hold on to what is good,(AK) 22 reject every kind of evil.

23 May God himself, the God of peace,(AL) sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul(AM) and body be kept blameless(AN) at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.(AO) 24 The one who calls(AP) you is faithful,(AQ) and he will do it.(AR)

25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.(AS) 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.(AT) 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.(AU)

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.(AV)

Paul, Silas[a](AW) and Timothy,(AX)

To the church of the Thessalonians(AY) in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.(AZ)

Thanksgiving and Prayer

We ought always to thank God for you,(BA) brothers and sisters,[b] and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.(BB) Therefore, among God’s churches we boast(BC) about your perseverance and faith(BD) in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.(BE)

All this is evidence(BF) that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy(BG) of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just:(BH) He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you(BI) and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven(BJ) in blazing fire(BK) with his powerful angels.(BL) He will punish(BM) those who do not know God(BN) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.(BO) They will be punished with everlasting destruction(BP) and shut out from the presence of the Lord(BQ) and from the glory of his might(BR) 10 on the day(BS) he comes to be glorified(BT) in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.(BU)

11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you,(BV) that our God may make you worthy(BW) of his calling,(BX) and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness(BY) and your every deed prompted by faith.(BZ) 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,(CA) and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.[c]

The Man of Lawlessness

Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ(CB) and our being gathered to him,(CC) we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter(CD)—asserting that the day of the Lord(CE) has already come.(CF) Don’t let anyone deceive you(CG) in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion(CH) occurs and the man of lawlessness[d] is revealed,(CI) the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God(CJ) or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.(CK)

Don’t you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?(CL) And now you know what is holding him back,(CM) so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back(CN) will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed,(CO) whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth(CP) and destroy by the splendor of his coming.(CQ) The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan(CR) works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders(CS) that serve the lie, 10 and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.(CT) They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.(CU) 11 For this reason God sends them(CV) a powerful delusion(CW) so that they will believe the lie(CX) 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.(CY)

Stand Firm

13 But we ought always to thank God for you,(CZ) brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits[e](DA) to be saved(DB) through the sanctifying work of the Spirit(DC) and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you(DD) to this through our gospel,(DE) that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm(DF) and hold fast to the teachings[f] we passed on to you,(DG) whether by word of mouth or by letter.

16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,(DH) who loved us(DI) and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage(DJ) your hearts and strengthen(DK) you in every good deed and word.

Request for Prayer

As for other matters, brothers and sisters,(DL) pray for us(DM) that the message of the Lord(DN) may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.(DO) And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people,(DP) for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful,(DQ) and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.(DR) We have confidence(DS) in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts(DT) into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

Warning Against Idleness

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,(DU) we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from(DV) every believer who is idle and disruptive(DW) and does not live according to the teaching[g] you received from us.(DX) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example.(DY) We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked(DZ) night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help,(EA) but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.(EB) 10 For even when we were with you,(EC) we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work(ED) shall not eat.”

11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies.(EE) 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ(EF) to settle down and earn the food they eat.(EG) 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.(EH)

14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them,(EI) in order that they may feel ashamed.(EJ) 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.(EK)

Final Greetings

16 Now may the Lord of peace(EL) himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.(EM)

17 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand,(EN) which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.(EO)

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.

12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.

14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

15 See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

16 Rejoice evermore.

17 Pray without ceasing.

18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

19 Quench not the Spirit.

20 Despise not prophesyings.

21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.

25 Brethren, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.

27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:

And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.

Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you;

Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you:

Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.

10 For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

11 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

13 But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing.

14 And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle: so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
