17 Élie, le Thischbite, l'un des habitants de Galaad, dit à Achab: L'Éternel est vivant, le Dieu d'Israël, dont je suis le serviteur! il n'y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.
2 Et la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Élie, en ces mots:
3 Pars d'ici, dirige-toi vers l'orient, et cache-toi près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
4 Tu boiras de l'eau du torrent, et j'ai ordonné aux corbeaux de te nourrir là.
5 Il partit et fit selon la parole de l'Éternel, et il alla s'établir près du torrent de Kerith, qui est en face du Jourdain.
6 Les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la viande le matin, et du pain et de la viande le soir, et il buvait de l'eau du torrent.
7 Mais au bout d'un certain temps le torrent fut à sec, car il n'était point tombé de pluie dans le pays.
8 Alors la parole de l'Éternel lui fut adressée en ces mots:
9 Lève-toi, va à Sarepta, qui appartient à Sidon, et demeure là. Voici, j'y ai ordonné à une femme veuve de te nourrir.
10 Il se leva, et il alla à Sarepta. Comme il arrivait à l'entrée de la ville, voici, il y avait là une femme veuve qui ramassait du bois. Il l'appela, et dit: Va me chercher, je te prie, un peu d'eau dans un vase, afin que je boive.
11 Et elle alla en chercher. Il l'appela de nouveau, et dit: Apporte-moi, je te prie, un morceau de pain dans ta main.
12 Et elle répondit: L'Éternel, ton Dieu, est vivant! je n'ai rien de cuit, je n'ai qu'une poignée de farine dans un pot et un peu d'huile dans une cruche. Et voici, je ramasse deux morceaux de bois, puis je rentrerai et je préparerai cela pour moi et pour mon fils; nous mangerons, après quoi nous mourrons.
13 Élie lui dit: Ne crains point, rentre, fais comme tu as dit. Seulement, prépare-moi d'abord avec cela un petit gâteau, et tu me l'apporteras; tu en feras ensuite pour toi et pour ton fils.
14 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël: La farine qui est dans le pot ne manquera point et l'huile qui est dans la cruche ne diminuera point, jusqu'au jour où l'Éternel fera tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.
15 Elle alla, et elle fit selon la parole d'Élie. Et pendant longtemps elle eut de quoi manger, elle et sa famille, aussi bien qu'Élie.
16 La farine qui était dans le pot ne manqua point, et l'huile qui était dans la cruche ne diminua point, selon la parole que l'Éternel avait prononcée par Élie.
17 Après ces choses, le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade, et sa maladie fut si violente qu'il ne resta plus en lui de respiration.
18 Cette femme dit alors à Élie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler le souvenir de mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils?
19 Il lui répondit: Donne-moi ton fils. Et il le prit du sein de la femme, le monta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.
20 Puis il invoqua l'Éternel, et dit: Éternel, mon Dieu, est-ce que tu affligerais, au point de faire mourir son fils, même cette veuve chez qui j'ai été reçu comme un hôte?
21 Et il s'étendit trois fois sur l'enfant, invoqua l'Éternel, et dit: Éternel, mon Dieu, je t'en prie, que l'âme de cet enfant revienne au dedans de lui!
22 L'Éternel écouta la voix d'Élie, et l'âme de l'enfant revint au dedans de lui, et il fut rendu à la vie.
23 Élie prit l'enfant, le descendit de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère. Et Élie dit: Vois, ton fils est vivant.
24 Et la femme dit à Élie: Je reconnais maintenant que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'Éternel dans ta bouche est vérité.
18 Bien des jours s'écoulèrent, et la parole de l'Éternel fut ainsi adressée à Élie, dans la troisième année: Va, présente-toi devant Achab, et je ferai tomber de la pluie sur la face du sol.
2 Et Élie alla, pour se présenter devant Achab. La famine était grande à Samarie.
3 Et Achab fit appeler Abdias, chef de sa maison. -Or Abdias craignait beaucoup l'Éternel;
4 et lorsque Jézabel extermina les prophètes de l'Éternel, Abdias prit cent prophètes qu'il cacha cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et il les avait nourris de pain et d'eau. -
5 Achab dit à Abdias: Va par le pays vers toutes les sources d'eau et vers tous les torrents; peut-être se trouvera-t-il de l'herbe, et nous conserverons la vie aux chevaux et aux mulets, et nous n'aurons pas besoin d'abattre du bétail.
6 Ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir; Achab alla seul par un chemin, et Abdias alla seul par un autre chemin.
7 Comme Abdias était en route, voici, Élie le rencontra. Abdias, l'ayant reconnu, tomba sur son visage, et dit: Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie?
8 Il lui répondit: C'est moi; va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
9 Et Abdias dit: Quel péché ai-je commis, pour que tu livres ton serviteur entre les mains d'Achab, qui me fera mourir?
10 L'Éternel est vivant! il n'est ni nation ni royaume où mon maître n'ait envoyé pour te chercher; et quand on disait que tu n'y étais pas, il faisait jurer le royaume et la nation que l'on ne t'avait pas trouvé.
11 Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
12 Puis, lorsque je t'aurai quitté l'esprit de l'Éternel te transportera je ne sais où; et j'irai informer Achab, qui ne te trouvera pas, et qui me tuera. Cependant ton serviteur craint l'Éternel dès sa jeunesse.
13 N'a-t-on pas dit à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel tua les prophètes de l'Éternel? J'ai caché cent prophètes de l'Éternel, cinquante par cinquante dans une caverne, et je les ai nourris de pain et d'eau.
14 Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie! Il me tuera.
15 Mais Élie dit: L'Éternel des armées, dont je suis le serviteur, est vivant! aujourd'hui je me présenterai devant Achab.
16 Abdias, étant allé à la rencontre d'Achab, l'informa de la chose. Et Achab se rendit au-devant d'Élie.
17 A peine Achab aperçut-il Élie qu'il lui dit: Est-ce toi, qui jettes le trouble en Israël?
18 Élie répondit: Je ne trouble point Israël; c'est toi, au contraire, et la maison de ton père, puisque vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Éternel et que tu es allé après les Baals.
19 Fais maintenant rassembler tout Israël auprès de moi, à la montagne du Carmel, et aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d'Astarté qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.
20 Achab envoya des messagers vers tous les enfants d'Israël, et il rassembla les prophètes à la montagne du Carmel.
21 Alors Élie s'approcha de tout le peuple, et dit: Jusqu'à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés? Si l'Éternel est Dieu, allez après lui; si c'est Baal, allez après lui! Le peuple ne lui répondit rien.
22 Et Élie dit au peuple: Je suis resté seul des prophètes de l'Éternel, et il y a quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal.
23 Que l'on nous donne deux taureaux; qu'ils choisissent pour eux l'un des taureaux, qu'ils le coupent par morceaux, et qu'ils le placent sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu; et moi, je préparerai l'autre taureau, et je le placerai sur le bois, sans y mettre le feu.
24 Puis invoquez le nom de votre dieu; et moi, j'invoquerai le nom de l'Éternel. Le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c'est celui-là qui sera Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit, en disant: C'est bien!
25 Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal: Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, préparez-le les premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu; mais ne mettez pas le feu.
26 Ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur donna, et le préparèrent; et ils invoquèrent le nom de Baal, depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, en disant: Baal réponds nous! Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils sautaient devant l'autel qu'ils avaient fait.
27 A midi, Élie se moqua d'eux, et dit: Criez à haute voix, puisqu'il est dieu; il pense à quelque chose, ou il est occupé, ou il est en voyage; peut-être qu'il dort, et il se réveillera.
28 Et ils crièrent à haute voix, et ils se firent, selon leur coutume, des incisions avec des épées et avec des lances, jusqu'à ce que le sang coulât sur eux.
29 Lorsque midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'au moment de la présentation de l'offrande. Mais il n'y eut ni voix, ni réponse, ni signe d'attention.
30 Élie dit alors à tout le peuple: Approchez-vous de moi! Tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Et Élie rétablit l'autel de l'Éternel, qui avait été renversé.
31 Il prit douze pierres d'après le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel l'Éternel avait dit: Israël sera ton nom;
32 et il bâtit avec ces pierres un autel au nom de l'Éternel. Il fit autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité de deux mesures de semence.
33 Il arrangea le bois, coupa le taureau par morceaux, et le plaça sur le bois.
34 Puis il dit: Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches, et versez-les sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. Il dit: Faites-le une seconde fois. Et ils le firent une seconde fois. Il dit: Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent une troisième fois.
35 L'eau coula autour de l'autel, et l'on remplit aussi d'eau le fossé.
36 Au moment de la présentation de l'offrande, Élie, le prophète, s'avança et dit: Éternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël! que l'on sache aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël, que je suis ton serviteur, et que j'ai fait toutes ces choses par ta parole!
37 Réponds-moi, Éternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que c'est toi, Éternel, qui es Dieu, et que c'est toi qui ramènes leur coeur!
38 Et le feu de l'Éternel tomba, et il consuma l'holocauste, le bois, les pierres et la terre, et il absorba l'eau qui était dans le fossé.
39 Quand tout le peuple vit cela, ils tombèrent sur leur visage et dirent: C'est l'Éternel qui est Dieu! C'est l'Éternel qui est Dieu!
40 Saisissez les prophètes de Baal, leur dit Élie; qu'aucun d'eux n'échappe! Et ils les saisirent. Élie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison, où il les égorgea.
41 Et Élie dit à Achab: Monte, mange et bois; car il se fait un bruit qui annonce la pluie.
42 Achab monta pour manger et pour boire. Mais Élie monta au sommet du Carmel; et, se penchant contre terre, il mit son visage entre ses genoux,
43 et dit à son serviteur: Monte, regarde du côté de la mer. Le serviteur monta, il regarda, et dit: Il n'y a rien. Élie dit sept fois: Retourne.
44 A la septième fois, il dit: Voici un petit nuage qui s'élève de la mer, et qui est comme la paume de la main d'un homme. Élie dit: Monte, et dis à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne t'arrête pas.
45 En peu d'instants, le ciel s'obscurcit par les nuages, le vent s'établit, et il y eut une forte pluie. Achab monta sur son char, et partit pour Jizreel.
46 Et la main de l'Éternel fut sur Élie, qui se ceignit les reins et courut devant Achab jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizreel.
19 Achab rapporta à Jézabel tout ce qu'avait fait Élie, et comment il avait tué par l'épée tous les prophètes.
2 Jézabel envoya un messager à Élie, pour lui dire: Que les dieux me traitent dans toute leur rigueur, si demain, à cette heure, je ne fais de ta vie ce que tu as fait de la vie de chacun d'eux!
3 Élie, voyant cela, se leva et s'en alla, pour sauver sa vie. Il arriva à Beer Schéba, qui appartient à Juda, et il y laissa son serviteur.
4 Pour lui, il alla dans le désert où, après une journée de marche, il s'assit sous un genêt, et demanda la mort, en disant: C'est assez! Maintenant, Éternel, prends mon âme, car je ne suis pas meilleur que mes pères.
5 Il se coucha et s'endormit sous un genêt. Et voici, un ange le toucha, et lui dit: Lève-toi, mange.
6 Il regarda, et il y avait à son chevet un gâteau cuit sur des pierres chauffées et une cruche d'eau. Il mangea et but, puis se recoucha.
7 L'ange de l'Éternel vint une seconde fois, le toucha, et dit: Lève-toi, mange, car le chemin est trop long pour toi.
8 Il se leva, mangea et but; et avec la force que lui donna cette nourriture, il marcha quarante jours et quarante nuits jusqu'à la montagne de Dieu, à Horeb.
9 Et là, il entra dans la caverne, et il y passa la nuit. Et voici, la parole de l'Éternel lui fut adressée, en ces mots: Que fais-tu ici, Élie?
10 Il répondit: J'ai déployé mon zèle pour l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué par l'épée tes prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie.
11 L'Éternel dit: Sors, et tiens-toi dans la montagne devant l'Éternel! Et voici, l'Éternel passa. Et devant l'Éternel, il y eut un vent fort et violent qui déchirait les montagnes et brisait les rochers: l'Éternel n'était pas dans le vent. Et après le vent, ce fut un tremblement de terre: l'Éternel n'était pas dans le tremblement de terre.
12 Et après le tremblement de terre, un feu: l'Éternel n'était pas dans le feu. Et après le feu, un murmure doux et léger.
13 Quand Élie l'entendit, il s'enveloppa le visage de son manteau, il sortit et se tint à l'entrée de la caverne. Et voici, une voix lui fit entendre ces paroles: Que fais-tu ici, Élie?
14 Il répondit: J'ai déployé mon zèle pour l'Éternel, le Dieu des armées; car les enfants d'Israël ont abandonné ton alliance, ils ont renversé tes autels, et ils ont tué par l'épée tes prophètes; je suis resté, moi seul, et ils cherchent à m'ôter la vie.
15 L'Éternel lui dit: Va, reprends ton chemin par le désert jusqu'à Damas; et quand tu seras arrivé, tu oindras Hazaël pour roi de Syrie.
16 Tu oindras aussi Jéhu, fils de Nimschi, pour roi d'Israël; et tu oindras Élisée, fils de Schaphath, d'Abel Mehola, pour prophète à ta place.
17 Et il arrivera que celui qui échappera à l'épée de Hazaël, Jéhu le fera mourir; et celui qui échappera à l'épée de Jéhu, Élisée le fera mourir.
18 Mais je laisserai en Israël sept mille hommes, tous ceux qui n'ont point fléchi les genoux devant Baal, et dont la bouche ne l'a point baisé.
19 Élie partit de là, et il trouva Élisée, fils de Schaphath, qui labourait. Il y avait devant lui douze paires de boeufs, et il était avec la douzième. Élie s'approcha de lui, et il jeta sur lui son manteau.
20 Élisée, quittant ses boeufs, courut après Élie, et dit: Laisse-moi embrasser mon père et ma mère, et je te suivrai. Élie lui répondit: Va, et reviens; car pense à ce que je t'ai fait.
21 Après s'être éloigné d'Élie, il revint prendre une paire de boeufs, qu'il offrit en sacrifice; avec l'attelage des boeufs, il fit cuire leur chair, et la donna à manger au peuple. Puis il se leva, suivit Élie, et fut à son service.

Elijah Proclaims a Drought
17 And Elijah the Tishbite, of the (A)inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, (B)“As the Lord God of Israel lives, (C)before whom I stand, (D)there shall not be dew nor rain (E)these years, except at my word.”
2 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 4 And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the (F)ravens to feed you there.”
5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. 7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
Elijah and the Widow
8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9 “Arise, go to (G)Zarephath, which belongs to (H)Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”
12 So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a [a]jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and (I)die.”
13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ ”
15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.
Elijah Revives the Widow’s Son
17 Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so [b]serious that [c]there was no breath left in him. 18 So she said to Elijah, (J)“What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”
19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. 20 Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?” 21 (K)And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.” 22 Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he (L)revived.
23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives!”
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this (M)I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”
Elijah’s Message to Ahab
18 And it came to pass after (N)many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and (O)I will send rain on the earth.”
2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab; and there was a severe famine in Samaria. 3 And Ahab had called Obadiah, who was [d]in charge of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly. 4 For so it was, while Jezebel [e]massacred the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go into the land to all the springs of water and to all the brooks; perhaps we may find grass to keep the horses and mules alive, so that we will not have to kill any livestock.” 6 So they divided the land between them to explore it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 Now as Obadiah was on his way, suddenly Elijah met him; and he (P)recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is that you, my lord Elijah?”
8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”
9 So he said, “How have I sinned, that you are delivering your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to hunt for you; and when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath from the kingdom or nation that they could not find you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, “Elijah is here” ’! 12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from you, that (Q)the Spirit of the Lord will carry you to a place I do not know; so when I go and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. 13 Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid one hundred men of the Lord’s prophets, fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, “Elijah is here.” ’ He will kill me!”
15 Then Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely present myself to him today.”
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, (R)“Is that you, O (S)troubler of Israel?”
18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, (T)in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on (U)Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, (V)and the four hundred prophets of [f]Asherah, who [g]eat at Jezebel’s table.”
Elijah’s Mount Carmel Victory
20 So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and (W)gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, (X)“How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, (Y)follow him.” But the people answered him not a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, (Z)“I alone am left a prophet of the Lord; (AA)but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. 24 Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God who (AB)answers by fire, He is God.”
So all the people answered and said, [h]“It is well spoken.”
25 Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”
26 So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, [i]hear us!” But there was (AC)no voice; no one answered. Then they [j]leaped about the altar which they had made.
27 And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry [k]aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they cried aloud, and (AD)cut themselves, as was their custom, with [l]knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. 29 And when midday was past, (AE)they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was (AF)no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. (AG)And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, (AH)“Israel shall be your name.” 32 Then with the stones he built an altar (AI)in the name of the Lord; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33 And he (AJ)put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, “Fill four waterpots with water, and (AK)pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.” 34 Then he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time; and he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time. 35 So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled (AL)the trench with water.
36 And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord (AM)God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, (AN)let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that (AO)I have done all these things at Your word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”
38 Then (AP)the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, (AQ)“The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”
40 And Elijah said to them, (AR)“Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook (AS)Kishon and (AT)executed them there.
The Drought Ends
41 Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; (AU)then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, 43 and said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.”
So he went up and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” And seven times he said, “Go again.”
44 Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, “There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!” So he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, [m]‘Prepare your chariot, and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”
45 Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. 46 Then the (AV)hand of the Lord came upon Elijah; and he (AW)girded[n] up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
Elijah Escapes from Jezebel
19 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, also how he had (AX)executed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, (AY)“So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.” 3 And when he saw that, he arose and ran for his life, and went to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a [o]broom tree. And he (AZ)prayed that he might die, and said, “It is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers!”
5 Then as he lay and slept under a broom tree, suddenly an [p]angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on [q]coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 And the [r]angel of the Lord came back the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and (BA)forty nights as far as (BB)Horeb, the mountain of God.
9 And there he went into a cave, and spent the night in that place; and behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 So he said, (BC)“I have been very (BD)zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and (BE)killed Your prophets with the sword. (BF)I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
God’s Revelation to Elijah
11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand (BG)on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord (BH)passed by, and (BI)a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [s]a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that (BJ)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. (BK)Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 (BL)And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”
15 Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; (BM)and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint (BN)Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And (BO)Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 (BP)It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will (BQ)kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, (BR)Elisha will kill. 18 (BS)Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, (BT)and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Elisha Follows Elijah
19 So he departed from there, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he was with the twelfth. Then Elijah passed by him and threw his (BU)mantle on him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah, and said, (BV)“Please let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you.”
And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha turned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen and slaughtered them and (BW)boiled their flesh, using the oxen’s equipment, and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah, and became his servant.

Elijah Announces a Great Drought
17 Now Elijah(A) the Tishbite, from Tishbe[a] in Gilead,(B) said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain(C) in the next few years except at my word.”
Elijah Fed by Ravens
2 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide(D) in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens(E) to supply you with food there.”
5 So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning(F) and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
Elijah and the Widow at Zarephath
7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath(G) in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow(H) there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”(I) 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil(J) in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain(K) on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin(L) and kill my son?”
19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried(M) out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched(N) himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother(O) and said, “Look, your son is alive!”
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know(P) that you are a man of God(Q) and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”(R)
Elijah and Obadiah
18 After a long time, in the third(S) year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah: “Go and present(T) yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain(U) on the land.” 2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab.
Now the famine was severe(V) in Samaria, 3 and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator.(W) (Obadiah was a devout believer(X) in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel(Y) was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden(Z) them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied(AA) them with food and water.) 5 Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs(AB) and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”(AC) 6 So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
7 As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized(AD) him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9 “What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look(AE) for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 11 But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12 I don’t know where the Spirit(AF) of the Lord may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the Lord since my youth. 13 Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord? I hid a hundred of the Lord’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. 14 And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15 Elijah said, “As the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present(AG) myself to Ahab today.”
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler(AH) of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you(AI) and your father’s family have. You have abandoned(AJ) the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon(AK) the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel.(AL) And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”(AM)
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.(AN) 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver(AO) between two opinions? If the Lord(AP) is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left,(AQ) but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.(AR) 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call(AS) on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.(AT) The god who answers by fire(AU)—he is God.”
Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.
Then they called(AV) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(AW) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(AX) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(AY) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(AZ) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(BA)
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar(BB) of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.”(BC) 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name(BD) of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[b] of seed. 33 He arranged(BE) the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.
36 At the time(BF) of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham,(BG) Isaac and Israel, let it be known(BH) today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.(BI) 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know(BJ) that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”
38 Then the fire(BK) of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate(BL) and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!”(BM)
40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley(BN) and slaughtered(BO) there.
41 And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.(BP)
43 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.
“There is nothing there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44 The seventh time(BQ) the servant reported, “A cloud(BR) as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”
So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45 Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain(BS) started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.(BT) 46 The power(BU) of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt,(BV) he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
Elijah Flees to Horeb
19 Now Ahab told Jezebel(BW) everything Elijah had done and how he had killed(BX) all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,(BY) if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”(BZ)
3 Elijah was afraid[c] and ran(CA) for his life.(CB) When he came to Beersheba(CC) in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush,(CD) sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life;(CE) I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.(CF)
All at once an angel(CG) touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty(CH) days and forty nights until he reached Horeb,(CI) the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave(CJ) and spent the night.
The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”(CK)
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous(CL) for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant,(CM) torn down your altars,(CN) and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(CO) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain(CP) in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”(CQ)
Then a great and powerful wind(CR) tore the mountains apart and shattered(CS) the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire,(CT) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.(CU) 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face(CV) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,(CW) and now they are trying to kill me too.”
15 The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael(CX) king over Aram. 16 Also, anoint(CY) Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha(CZ) son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah(DA) to succeed you as prophet. 17 Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael,(DB) and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.(DC) 18 Yet I reserve(DD) seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed(DE) him.”
The Call of Elisha
19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak(DF) around him. 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. “Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,”(DG) he said, “and then I will come with you.”
“Go back,” Elijah replied. “What have I done to you?”
21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen(DH) and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.(DI)
