23 (A)When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, (B)but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 (C)He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we (D)might die to sin and (E)live to righteousness. (F)By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For (G)you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to (H)the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Wives and Husbands

Likewise, wives, (I)be subject to your own husbands, so that (J)even if some do not obey the word, (K)they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your (L)respectful and pure conduct. (M)Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be (N)the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, (O)calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and (P)do not fear anything that is frightening.

Likewise, (Q)husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker (R)vessel, since they are heirs with you[a] of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

Suffering for Righteousness' Sake

Finally, all of you, (S)have unity of mind, sympathy, (T)brotherly love, (U)a tender heart, and (V)a humble mind. (W)Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, (X)bless, for (Y)to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing. 10 For

(Z)“Whoever desires to love life
    and see good days,
let him keep his tongue from evil
    and his lips from speaking deceit;
11 let him turn away from evil and do good;
    let him seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
    and his ears are open to their prayer.
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

13 Now (AA)who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14 (AB)But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed. (AC)Have no fear of them, (AD)nor be troubled, 15 but (AE)in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, (AF)always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and (AG)respect, 16 (AH)having a good conscience, so that, (AI)when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. 17 For (AJ)it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God's will, than for doing evil.

18 For Christ also (AK)suffered[b] (AL)once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, (AM)that he might bring us to God, being put to death (AN)in the flesh but made alive (AO)in the spirit, 19 in which[c] he went and (AP)proclaimed[d] to the spirits in prison, 20 because[e] they formerly did not obey, (AQ)when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, (AR)while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, (AS)eight persons, were brought safely through water. 21 Baptism, which corresponds to this, (AT)now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but (AU)as an appeal to God for a good conscience, (AV)through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and (AW)is at the right hand of God, (AX)with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.

Stewards of God's Grace

Since therefore (AY)Christ suffered in the flesh,[f] (AZ)arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for (BA)whoever has suffered in the flesh (BB)has ceased from sin, (BC)so as to live for (BD)the rest of the time in the flesh (BE)no longer for human passions but (BF)for the will of God. For the time that is past (BG)suffices (BH)for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry. With respect to this they are surprised when you do not join them in the same flood of (BI)debauchery, and (BJ)they malign you; but they will give account to him who is ready (BK)to judge the living and the dead. For this is why (BL)the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does.

(BM)The end of all things is at hand; therefore (BN)be self-controlled and sober-minded (BO)for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since (BP)love covers a multitude of sins. (BQ)Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 (BR)As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, (BS)as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks (BT)oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves (BU)by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything (BV)God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. (BW)To him belong glory and (BX)dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Suffering as a Christian

12 Beloved, do not be surprised at (BY)the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice (BZ)insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad (CA)when his glory is revealed.

23 When they hurled their insults at him,(A) he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats.(B) Instead, he entrusted himself(C) to him who judges justly.(D) 24 “He himself bore our sins”(E) in his body on the cross,(F) so that we might die to sins(G) and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”(H) 25 For “you were like sheep going astray,”[a](I) but now you have returned to the Shepherd(J) and Overseer of your souls.(K)

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves(L) to your own husbands(M) so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over(N) without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes.(O) Rather, it should be that of your inner self,(P) the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.(Q) For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God(R) used to adorn themselves.(S) They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord.(T) You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands,(U) in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Suffering for Doing Good

Finally, all of you, be like-minded,(V) be sympathetic, love one another,(W) be compassionate and humble.(X) Do not repay evil with evil(Y) or insult with insult.(Z) On the contrary, repay evil with blessing,(AA) because to this(AB) you were called(AC) so that you may inherit a blessing.(AD) 10 For,

“Whoever would love life
    and see good days
must keep their tongue from evil
    and their lips from deceitful speech.
11 They must turn from evil and do good;
    they must seek peace and pursue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
    and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”[b](AE)

13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?(AF) 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed.(AG) “Do not fear their threats[c]; do not be frightened.”[d](AH) 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer(AI) to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope(AJ) that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience,(AK) so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.(AL) 17 For it is better, if it is God’s will,(AM) to suffer for doing good(AN) than for doing evil. 18 For Christ also suffered once(AO) for sins,(AP) the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.(AQ) He was put to death in the body(AR) but made alive in the Spirit.(AS) 19 After being made alive,[e] he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits(AT) 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently(AU) in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.(AV) In it only a few people, eight in all,(AW) were saved(AX) through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you(AY) also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience(AZ) toward God.[f] It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,(BA) 22 who has gone into heaven(BB) and is at God’s right hand(BC)—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.(BD)

Living for God

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body,(BE) arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin.(BF) As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires,(BG) but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past(BH) doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry.(BI) They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.(BJ) But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.(BK) For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead,(BL) so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near.(BM) Therefore be alert and of sober mind(BN) so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply,(BO) because love covers over a multitude of sins.(BP) Offer hospitality(BQ) to one another without grumbling.(BR) 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others,(BS) as faithful(BT) stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.(BU) If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides,(BV) so that in all things God may be praised(BW) through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.(BX)

Suffering for Being a Christian

12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you(BY) to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice(BZ) inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ,(CA) so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.(CB)

  6. 1 Peter 3:21 Or but an appeal to God for a clear conscience

23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;

While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear.

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;

But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:

Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:

Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.

12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

17 For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

10 As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

11 If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
