10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets(A) who prophesied about the grace that would come to you searched and carefully investigated. 11 They inquired into what time or what circumstances[a] the Spirit of Christ(B) within them was indicating when He testified in advance(C) to the messianic sufferings[b](D) and the glories(E) that would follow.[c] 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you(F) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(G) Angels desire to look into these things.

A Call to Holy Living

13 Therefore, with your minds ready for action,[d](H) be serious(I) and set your hope(J) completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation(K) of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children,(L) do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. 15 But as the One who called you(M) is holy,(N) you also are to be holy in all your conduct; 16 for it is written, Be holy, because I am holy.(O)[e]

17 And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially(P) based on each one’s work,(Q) you are to conduct yourselves in fear(R) during the time of your temporary residence. 18 For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life(S) inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,(T) 19 but with the precious blood of Christ,(U) like that of a lamb(V) without defect or blemish. 20 He was chosen[f](W) before the foundation of the world but was revealed at the end of the times(X) for you 21 who through Him are believers in God,(Y) who raised Him from the dead(Z) and gave Him glory,(AA) so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 By obedience to the truth,[g] having purified yourselves[h] for sincere love of the brothers, love one another(AB) earnestly[i] from a pure[j] heart,(AC) 23 since you have been born again(AD)—not of perishable seed(AE) but of imperishable—through the living and enduring word of God.(AF) 24 For

All flesh is like grass,
and all its glory(AG) like a flower of the grass.
The grass withers, and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord endures forever.(AH)[k]

And this is the word that was preached as the gospel to you.

10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke(A) of the grace that was to come to you,(B) searched intently and with the greatest care,(C) 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ(D) in them was pointing when he predicted(E) the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,(F) when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you(G) by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.(H) Even angels long to look into these things.

Be Holy

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,(I) set your hope(J) on the grace to be brought to you(K) when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.(L) 14 As obedient(M) children, do not conform(N) to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.(O) 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(P) 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a](Q)

17 Since you call on a Father(R) who judges each person’s work(S) impartially,(T) live out your time as foreigners(U) here in reverent fear.(V) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(W) from the empty way of life(X) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(Y) of Christ, a lamb(Z) without blemish or defect.(AA) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(AB) but was revealed in these last times(AC) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(AD) who raised him from the dead(AE) and glorified him,(AF) and so your faith and hope(AG) are in God.

22 Now that you have purified(AH) yourselves by obeying(AI) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(AJ) from the heart.[b] 23 For you have been born again,(AK) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(AL) through the living and enduring word of God.(AM) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[c](AN)

And this is the word that was preached to you.
