The Queen of Sheba

10 (A)Now when the (B)queen of (C)Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon in relation to the name of the Lord, she came (D)to test him with riddles. So she came to Jerusalem with a very large entourage, with camels (E)carrying balsam oil and a very large quantity of gold and precious stones. When she came to Solomon, she spoke to him about everything that was in her heart. And Solomon [a]answered all her questions; nothing was concealed from the king which he did not explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built, and the food of his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their attire, his cupbearers, and his burnt offerings which he offered at the house of the Lord, [b]she was breathless. Then she said to the king, “It was a true [c]story that I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. But I did not believe the [d]stories until I came and my own eyes saw it all. And behold, the half of it was not reported to me. You have exceeded in wisdom and prosperity the report which I heard. (F)Blessed are your men, and blessed are these servants of yours who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom! (G)Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you to put you on the throne of Israel; (H)because the Lord loves Israel forever, He made you king, (I)to do justice and righteousness.” 10 Then (J)she gave the king [e]120 talents of gold, and a very large amount of balsam oil and precious stones. Never again did such a large quantity of balsam oil come in as that which the queen of Sheba gave King Solomon.

11 (K)And the ships of Hiram as well, which brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir a very great number of almug trees and precious stones. 12 (L)The king made from the almug trees supports for the house of the Lord and for the king’s house, and lyres and harps for the singers; such almug trees have not come in again, nor have they been seen to this day.

13 And King Solomon granted the queen of Sheba everything she desired, whatever she requested, besides what he gave her in proportion to [f]his royal bounty. Then she [g]departed and went to her own land [h]together with her servants.

Wealth, Splendor, and Wisdom

14 (M)Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was [i]666 talents of gold, 15 besides that from the traders, and the [j]wares of the merchants and all the kings of the (N)Arabs and the governors of the country. 16 (O)King Solomon made two hundred large shields of beaten gold, [k]using six hundred shekels of gold on each large shield. 17 And he made (P)three hundred small shields of beaten gold, [l]using [m]three minas of gold on each shield; and (Q)the king put them in the house of the timber of Lebanon. 18 Moreover, the king made a large throne of (R)ivory and overlaid it with fine gold. 19 There were six steps to the throne and a round top to the throne at its back, and [n]armrests [o]on each side of the seat, and two lions standing beside the [p]armrests. 20 Twelve lions were standing there on the six steps on the one side and on the other; nothing like it was made for [q]any other kingdom. 21 Now all King Solomon’s drinking utensils were of gold, and all the utensils of the house of the timber of Lebanon were of pure gold. None was of silver; it was not considered as amounting to anything in the days of Solomon. 22 For (S)the king had the ships of Tarshish at sea with Hiram’s ships; once every three years the ships of Tarshish would come carrying gold and silver, ivory, monkeys, and peacocks.

23 (T)So King Solomon became greater than all the kings of the earth in wealth and wisdom. 24 And all the earth was seeking the [r]attention of Solomon, (U)to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 25 And (V)they were bringing, everyone, [s]a gift: articles of silver and gold, garments, weapons, balsam oil, horses, and mules, so much year by year.

26 (W)Now Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; and he had 1,400 chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, and he [t]stationed them in the (X)chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem. 27 (Y)And the king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and he made cedars as plentiful as sycamore trees that are in the [u]lowland. 28 (Z)Also Solomon’s import of horses was from Egypt and Kue, and the king’s merchants acquired them from Kue for a price. 29 A chariot [v]was imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for 150; and [w]by the same means they exported them (AA)to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of the Arameans.

Solomon Turns from God

11 Now (AB)King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations of which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, “(AC)You shall not [x]associate with them, nor shall they [y]associate with you; they will certainly turn your heart away [z]to follow their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. (AD)He had seven hundred wives, who were [aa]princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away. For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away [ab]to follow other gods; and (AE)his heart was not [ac]wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of his father David had been. For Solomon became a follower of (AF)Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and of [ad](AG)Milcom the abhorrent idol of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not follow the Lord fully, as his father David had done. Then Solomon built a high place for (AH)Chemosh, the abhorrent idol of Moab, on the mountain that is [ae]east of Jerusalem, and for (AI)Molech, the abhorrent idol of the sons of Ammon. He also did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

Now (AJ)the Lord was angry with Solomon (AK)because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, (AL)who had appeared to him twice, 10 and (AM)had commanded him regarding this thing, that he was not to follow other gods; but he did not comply with what the Lord had commanded. 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since [af]you have done this, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, (AN)I will certainly tear the kingdom away from you, and will give it to your servant. 12 However, I will not do it in your days, only for the sake of your father David; but I will tear it away from the hand of your son. 13 Yet (AO)I will not tear away all the kingdom, but (AP)I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David, and (AQ)for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

God Raises Adversaries

14 Then the Lord raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was of the [ag]royal line in Edom. 15 For it came about, (AR)when David was in Edom and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury those killed in battle, and had (AS)struck and killed every male in Edom 16 (for Joab and all Israel stayed there for six months, until he had eliminated every male in Edom), 17 that Hadad fled [ah]to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, while Hadad was a young boy. 18 They set out from Midian and came to (AT)Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house and assigned him food and gave him land. 19 Now Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him in marriage the sister of his own wife, the sister of Tahpenes the queen. 20 And the sister of Tahpenes gave birth to his son Genubath, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh’s house among the sons of Pharaoh. 21 But (AU)when Hadad heard in Egypt that David [ai]lay down with his fathers and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, so that I may go to my own country.” 22 However, Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me that you are here, requesting to go to your own country?” And he answered, “Nothing; nevertheless you must let me go.”

23 (AV)God also raised up another adversary against him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master (AW)Hadadezer, king of Zobah. 24 And he gathered men to himself and became leader of a marauding band, (AX)after David killed those of Zobah; and they went to Damascus and stayed [aj]there, and reigned in Damascus. 25 So he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, along with the harm that Hadad inflicted; and he felt disgust for Israel and reigned over Aram.

26 Then (AY)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite of Zeredah, Solomon’s servant, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, (AZ)also [ak]rebelled against the king. 27 Now this was the reason why he [al]rebelled against the king: (BA)Solomon built the [am]Millo, and closed up the breach of the city of his father David. 28 Now the man Jeroboam was a valiant warrior, and when (BB)Solomon saw that the young man was [an]industrious, he appointed him over all the [ao]forced labor of the house of Joseph. 29 And it came about at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that (BC)the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him on the road. Now [ap]Ahijah had clothed himself with a new cloak; and both of them were alone in the field. 30 Then (BD)Ahijah took hold of the new cloak which was on him and tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says: ‘Behold, (BE)I am going to tear the kingdom away from the hand of Solomon and give you ten tribes 32 ((BF)but he shall have one tribe, for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, (BG)the city which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel), 33 because they have abandoned Me, and (BH)have worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, (BI)Chemosh the god of Moab, and Milcom the god of the sons of Ammon; and they have not walked in My ways, doing what is right in My sight and keeping My statutes and My ordinances, as his father David did. 34 Nevertheless I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, but I will make him ruler all the days of his life, for the sake of My servant David whom I chose, who kept My commandments and My statutes; 35 but (BJ)I will take the kingdom from his son’s hand and give it to you; that is, ten tribes. 36 But (BK)to his son I will give one tribe, (BL)so that My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, (BM)the city where I have chosen for Myself to put My name. 37 However I will take you, and you shall reign over all that [aq]you desire, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 Then it shall be, that if you listen to all that I command you and walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight by keeping My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then (BN)I will be with you and (BO)build you an enduring house as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you. 39 So I will oppress the [ar]descendants of David for this, but not always.’” 40 Solomon sought therefore to put Jeroboam to death; but Jeroboam set out and fled to Egypt to (BP)Shishak king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

The Death of Solomon

41 (BQ)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon and whatever he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon? 42 So (BR)the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43 Then Solomon [as](BS)lay down with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David, and his son (BT)Rehoboam reigned in his place.

King Rehoboam Acts Foolishly

12 (BU)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, because all Israel had come to (BV)Shechem to make him king. Now (BW)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about this, [at]he was living in Egypt (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon). Then they sent word and summoned him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, (BX)Your father made our yoke hard; but now, lighten the hard labor imposed by your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.” Then he said to them, “(BY)Depart [au]for three days, then return to me.” So the people departed.

And King Rehoboam (BZ)consulted with the elders who had [av]served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?” Then they spoke to him, saying, “(CA)If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and [aw]grant them their request, and speak pleasant words to them, then they will be your servants always.” But he ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him [ax]and served him. He said to them, “What advice do you give, so that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?” 10 And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “This is what you should say to this people who spoke to you, saying: ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!’ You should speak this way to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Now then, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke; yet I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [ay]scorpions!’”

12 Then Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had [az]directed, saying, “(CB)Return to me on the third day.” 13 And the king answered the people harshly, for he ignored the advice of the elders which they had [ba]given him, 14 and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “(CC)My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with [bb]scorpions!” 15 So the king did not listen to the people; (CD)because it was [bc]a turn of events from the Lord, (CE)in order to establish His word which the Lord spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

The Kingdom Divided; Jeroboam Rules Israel

16 When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,

“What share do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(CF)To your tents, Israel!
Now look after your own house, David!”

So Israel went away to their tents. 17 But (CG)as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18 Then King Rehoboam sent (CH)Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him [bd]to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. 19 (CI)So Israel has broken with the house of David to this day.

20 And it came about, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent word and called him to the assembly, and made him king over all Israel. (CJ)None except the tribe of Judah alone followed the house of David.

21 (CK)Now when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. 22 But the word of God came to (CL)Shemaiah the man of God, saying, 23 “Tell Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the (CM)rest of the people, saying, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: “You shall not go up nor fight against your relatives the sons of Israel; return, every man to his house, (CN)for this thing has come from Me.”’” So they listened to the word of the Lord, and returned to go their way in accordance with the word of the Lord.

Jeroboam’s Idolatry

25 Then (CO)Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived [be]there. And he went out from there and built (CP)Penuel. 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, “Now the kingdom will return to the house of David. 27 (CQ)If this people go up to [bf]offer sacrifices in the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will return to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.” 28 So the king [bg]consulted, and he (CR)made two golden (CS)calves; and he said to [bh]the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; (CT)behold your gods, Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt.” 29 And he set up (CU)one in (CV)Bethel, and the other he put in (CW)Dan. 30 Now (CX)this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan. 31 And (CY)he made houses on high places, and [bi](CZ)appointed priests from [bj]all the people who were not of the sons of Levi. 32 Jeroboam also [bk]instituted a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month, (DA)like the feast that is in Judah, and he [bl]went up to the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves which he had made. And he stationed in Bethel (DB)the priests of the high places which he had made. 33 Then he [bm]went up to the altar which he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, the month that he had [bn](DC)devised [bo]in his own heart; and he [bp]instituted a feast for the sons of Israel and [bq]went up to the altar (DD)to burn [br]incense.

The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon(A)

10 When the queen of Sheba(B) heard about the fame(C) of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions.(D) Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan(E)—with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones—she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the food on his table,(F) the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at[a] the temple of the Lord, she was overwhelmed.

She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe(G) these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth(H) you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear(I) your wisdom! Praise(J) be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love(K) for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice(L) and righteousness.”

10 And she gave the king 120 talents[b] of gold,(M) large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 (Hiram’s ships brought gold from Ophir;(N) and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood[c] and precious stones. 12 The king used the almugwood to make supports[d] for the temple of the Lord and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.)

13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country.

Solomon’s Splendor(O)

14 The weight of the gold(P) that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents,[e] 15 not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the territories.

16 King Solomon made two hundred large shields(Q) of hammered gold; six hundred shekels[f] of gold went into each shield. 17 He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas[g] of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon.(R)

18 Then the king made a great throne covered with ivory and overlaid with fine gold. 19 The throne had six steps, and its back had a rounded top. On both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them. 20 Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom. 21 All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold.(S) Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s days. 22 The king had a fleet of trading ships[h](T) at sea along with the ships(U) of Hiram. Once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons.

23 King Solomon was greater in riches(V) and wisdom(W) than all the other kings of the earth. 24 The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom(X) God had put in his heart. 25 Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift(Y)—articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules.

26 Solomon accumulated chariots and horses;(Z) he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[i] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 27 The king made silver as common(AA) in Jerusalem as stones,(AB) and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig(AC) trees in the foothills. 28 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[j]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 29 They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[k] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites(AD) and of the Arameans.

Solomon’s Wives

11 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women(AE) besides Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabites, Ammonites,(AF) Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry(AG) with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods.” Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines,(AH) and his wives led him astray.(AI) As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods,(AJ) and his heart was not fully devoted(AK) to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been. He followed Ashtoreth(AL) the goddess of the Sidonians, and Molek(AM) the detestable god of the Ammonites. So Solomon did evil(AN) in the eyes of the Lord; he did not follow the Lord completely, as David his father had done.

On a hill east(AO) of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh(AP) the detestable god of Moab, and for Molek(AQ) the detestable god of the Ammonites. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and offered sacrifices to their gods.

The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared(AR) to him twice. 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods,(AS) Solomon did not keep the Lord’s command.(AT) 11 So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees,(AU) which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear(AV) the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. 12 Nevertheless, for the sake of David(AW) your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe(AX) for the sake(AY) of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”(AZ)

Solomon’s Adversaries

14 Then the Lord raised up against Solomon an adversary,(BA) Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom. 15 Earlier when David was fighting with Edom, Joab the commander of the army, who had gone up to bury the dead, had struck down all the men in Edom.(BB) 16 Joab and all the Israelites stayed there for six months, until they had destroyed all the men in Edom. 17 But Hadad, still only a boy, fled to Egypt with some Edomite officials who had served his father. 18 They set out from Midian and went to Paran.(BC) Then taking people from Paran with them, they went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.

19 Pharaoh was so pleased with Hadad that he gave him a sister of his own wife, Queen Tahpenes, in marriage. 20 The sister of Tahpenes bore him a son named Genubath, whom Tahpenes brought up in the royal palace. There Genubath lived with Pharaoh’s own children.

21 While he was in Egypt, Hadad heard that David rested with his ancestors and that Joab the commander of the army was also dead. Then Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”

22 “What have you lacked here that you want to go back to your own country?” Pharaoh asked.

“Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but do let me go!”

23 And God raised up against Solomon another adversary,(BD) Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from his master, Hadadezer(BE) king of Zobah. 24 When David destroyed Zobah’s army, Rezon gathered a band of men around him and became their leader; they went to Damascus,(BF) where they settled and took control. 25 Rezon was Israel’s adversary as long as Solomon lived, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled in Aram(BG) and was hostile toward Israel.

Jeroboam Rebels Against Solomon

26 Also, Jeroboam son of Nebat rebelled(BH) against the king. He was one of Solomon’s officials, an Ephraimite from Zeredah, and his mother was a widow named Zeruah.

27 Here is the account of how he rebelled against the king: Solomon had built the terraces[l](BI) and had filled in the gap in the wall of the city of David his father. 28 Now Jeroboam was a man of standing,(BJ) and when Solomon saw how well(BK) the young man did his work, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the tribes of Joseph.

29 About that time Jeroboam was going out of Jerusalem, and Ahijah(BL) the prophet of Shiloh met him on the way, wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone out in the country, 30 and Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing and tore(BM) it into twelve pieces. 31 Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘See, I am going to tear(BN) the kingdom out of Solomon’s hand and give you ten tribes. 32 But for the sake(BO) of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe. 33 I will do this because they have[m] forsaken me and worshiped(BP) Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Molek the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked(BQ) in obedience to me, nor done what is right in my eyes, nor kept my decrees(BR) and laws as David, Solomon’s father, did.

34 “‘But I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand; I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David my servant, whom I chose and who obeyed my commands and decrees. 35 I will take the kingdom from his son’s hands and give you ten tribes. 36 I will give one tribe(BS) to his son so that David my servant may always have a lamp(BT) before me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put my Name. 37 However, as for you, I will take you, and you will rule(BU) over all that your heart desires;(BV) you will be king over Israel. 38 If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right(BW) in my eyes by obeying my decrees(BX) and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty(BY) as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you. 39 I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’”

40 Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled(BZ) to Egypt, to Shishak(CA) the king, and stayed there until Solomon’s death.

Solomon’s Death(CB)

41 As for the other events of Solomon’s reign—all he did and the wisdom he displayed—are they not written in the book of the annals of Solomon? 42 Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 43 Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam(CC) his son succeeded him as king.

Israel Rebels Against Rehoboam(CD)

12 Rehoboam went to Shechem,(CE) for all Israel had gone there to make him king. When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled(CF) from King Solomon), he returned from[n] Egypt. So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: “Your father put a heavy yoke(CG) on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”

Rehoboam answered, “Go away for three days and then come back to me.” So the people went away.

Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders(CH) who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.

They replied, “If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer,(CI) they will always be your servants.”

But Rehoboam rejected(CJ) the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked them, “What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”

10 The young men who had grown up with him replied, “These people have said to you, ‘Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.’ Now tell them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11 My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.’”

12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, “Come back to me in three days.” 13 The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, 14 he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged(CK) you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.” 15 So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord,(CL) to fulfill the word the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah(CM) the Shilonite.

16 When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king:

“What share(CN) do we have in David,
    what part in Jesse’s son?
To your tents, Israel!(CO)
Look after your own house, David!”

So the Israelites went home.(CP) 17 But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah,(CQ) Rehoboam still ruled over them.

18 King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram,[o](CR) who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death.(CS) King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. 19 So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David(CT) to this day.

20 When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.(CU)

21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin—a hundred and eighty thousand able young men—to go to war(CV) against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.

22 But this word of God came to Shemaiah(CW) the man of God:(CX) 23 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 24 ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.’” So they obeyed the word of the Lord and went home again, as the Lord had ordered.

Golden Calves at Bethel and Dan

25 Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem(CY) in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.[p](CZ)

26 Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. 27 If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem,(DA) they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.”

28 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves.(DB) He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.”(DC) 29 One he set up in Bethel,(DD) and the other in Dan.(DE) 30 And this thing became a sin;(DF) the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.[q]

31 Jeroboam built shrines(DG) on high places and appointed priests(DH) from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. 32 He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth(DI) month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel,(DJ) sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. 33 On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel.(DK) So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.
