1 John 3 Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
3 See ye what manner charity the Father gave to us, that we be named the sons of God, and be his sons. For this thing the world knew not us, for it knew not him [For this thing the world knoweth not us, for it knoweth not him].
2 Most dear brethren, now we be the sons of God, and yet it appeared not, what we shall be. We know, that when he shall appear, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
3 And each man that hath this hope in him, maketh himself holy, as [and] he is holy.
4 Each man that doeth sin, doeth also wickedness, and sin is wickedness.
5 And ye know, that he appeared to do away sins, and sin is not in him.
6 Each man that dwelleth in him, sinneth not; and each that sinneth, seeth not him, neither knew him.
7 Little sons, no man deceive you; he that doeth rightwiseness, is just, as also he is just.
8 He that doeth sin, is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. In this thing the Son of God appeared, that he undo the works of the devil.
9 Each man that is born of God, doeth not sin; for the seed of God dwelleth in him, and he may not do sin [and he may not sin], for he is born of God.
10 In this thing the sons of God be known, and the sons of the fiend. Each man that is not just, is not of God, and he that loveth not his brother [and he that loveth not his brother, is not of God].
11 For this is the telling, that ye heard at the beginning, that ye love each other;
12 not as Cain, that was of the devil, and slew his brother. And for what thing slew he him? for his works were evil, and his brother's just.
13 Brethren, do not ye wonder, if the world hateth you.
14 We know, that we be translated from death to life, for we love brethren. He that loveth not, dwelleth in death.
15 Each man that hateth his brother, is a manslayer; and ye know, that each manslayer hath not everlasting life dwelling in him.
16 In this thing we have known the charity of God, for he put his life for us, and we owe to put our lives for our brethren.
17 He that hath the chattel of this world, and seeth that his brother hath need [He that shall have the substance of this world, and shall see his brother have need], and closeth his entrails from him, how dwelleth the charity of God in him?
18 My little sons, love we not in word, neither in tongue, but in work and truth.
19 In this thing we know, that we be of truth, and in his sight we admonish our hearts.
20 For if our heart reprove us, God is more than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Most dear brethren, if our heart reproveth not us, we have trust to God;
22 and whatever we shall ask, we shall receive of him, for we keep his commandments, and we do those things that be pleasant before him.
23 And this is the commandment of God, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and that we love each other [And this is the commandment of him, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love each other], as he gave behest to us.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him. And in this thing we know, that he dwelleth in us, by the Spirit, whom he gave to us.
1 John 3 New Matthew Bible (NMB)
The singular love of God toward us. How we in response ought to love one another.
3 Behold what love the Father has shown on us, that we should be called the children of God. Because of this, the world does not know you: because it does not know him. 2 Dearly beloveds, now we are the children of God. And yet it does not appear what we will be. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him. For we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whoever commits sin, commits unrighteousness also. For sin is unrighteousness. 5 And you know that he appeared to take away our sins, and in him is no sin. 6 As many as abide in him, do not sin. Whoever sins has not seen him, neither has known him.
7 Babes, let no one deceive you. He who does righteousness, is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 He who commits sin is of the devil. For the devil has sinned since the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God appeared: to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whosoever is born of God does not sin, for his seed remains in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this are the children of God known, and the children of the devil. Whoever does not work righteousness is not of God, neither he who does not love his brother.
11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning: that you should love one another – 12 not like Cain, who was of the wicked one and slew his brother. And why did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s good. 13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we are translated from death to life because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother, abides in death. 15 Whosoever hates his brother is a man-slayer. And you know that no man-slayer has eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we perceive love: that he gave his life for us. And therefore we also ought to give our lives for the brethren. 17 Whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his compassion from him, how does the love of God dwell in him?
18 My babes, let us not love in word, nor in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 For by this we know that we are of the truth, and can quiet our hearts before him. 20 But if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our hearts, and knows all things. 21 Beloveds, if our hearts do not condemn us, then we have trust before God – 22 and whatever we ask, we shall receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 And this is his commandment: that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave commandment. 24 And he who keeps his commandments dwells in him, and he in him. And by this we know that there abides in us of the Spirit that he gave us.
1 John 3 1599 Geneva Bible (GNV)
3 1 Setting down the inestimable glory of this that we are God’s sons, 7 he showeth that newness of life must be testifieth by good works, whereof charity is a manifest token. 19 Of faith, 22 and praying unto God.
2 [e]Dearly beloved, now are we the sons of God, but yet it is not made manifest what we shall be: and we know that when he shall be made manifest: we shall be [f]like him: for we shall see him [g]as he is.
5 [m]And ye know that he was made manifest, that he might take away our sins, and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him, sinneth not: whosoever [n]sinneth, hath not seen him, neither hath known him.
7 [o]Little children, let no man deceive you, he that doeth righteousness, is righteous, as he is righteous.
9 Whosoever is born of God sinneth not: for his [t]seed remaineth in him, neither can he sin, because he is born of God.
11 [w]For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
13 Marvel not my brethren, though this world hate you.
15 [ac]Whosoever hateth his brother, is a manslayer: and ye know that no manslayer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 [ad]Hereby have we perceived love, that he laid down his life for us: therefore we ought also to lay down our lives for the brethren.
18 [ah]My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue only, but in deed and in truth.
20 For [ak]if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 [al]Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we boldness toward God.
22 [am]And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things which are pleasing in his sight.
23 This is then his commandment, that we believe in the Name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave commandment.
24 For he that keepeth his commandments, dwelleth in him, and he in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, even by that [an]Spirit which he hath given us.
