And I, brethren, might not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to fleshly men [but as to fleshly]; as to little children in Christ,

I gave to you milk to drink, not meat; for ye might not yet understand, neither ye be able to now [but neither now soothly ye be able],

for yet ye be fleshly. For while envy and strife is among you, whether ye be not fleshly, and ye go after man?

For when some saith, I am of Paul, and another, But I am of Apollos [another forsooth, I am of Apollos], whether ye be not [fleshly] men?

What therefore is Apollos, and what Paul? They be ministers of him, to whom ye have believed; and to each man as God hath given.

I planted, Apollos moisted [Apollos watered, or moisted], but God gave increasing.

Therefore [And so] neither he that planteth is any thing, neither he that moisteth, but God that giveth increasing.

And he that planteth, and he that moisteth, be one; and each shall take his own meed, after his travail.

For we be the helpers of God; ye be the earth-tilling of God, ye be the building of God.

10 After the grace of God that is given to me, as a wise master carpenter I setted the foundament [I set the foundament]; and another buildeth above. But each man see, how he buildeth above [how and what things he buildeth upon].

11 For no man may set another foundament, except that that is set [besides that that is set], which is Christ Jesus.

12 For if any man buildeth over this foundament, gold, silver, precious stones, sticks, hay, or stubble, [Forsooth if any man build upon this foundament, gold, silver, precious stones, sticks, hay, stubble,]

13 every man's work shall be open; for the day of the Lord shall declare, for it shall be showed in fire; the fire shall prove the work of each man, what manner work it is [what manner it is].

14 If the work of any man dwell still, which he builded above [which he builded upon], he shall receive meed.

15 If any man's work burn, he shall suffer harm [If any man's work shall burn, he shall suffer impairing]; but he shall be safe, so nevertheless as by fire.

16 Know ye not, that ye be the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

17 And if any [man] defouleth the temple of God, God shall destroy him [God shall lose him]; for the temple of God is holy, which ye be.

18 No man deceive himself. If any man among you is seen to be wise in this world, be he made a fool, that he be wise.

19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God; for it is written, I shall catch wise men in their fell wisdom [I shall catch wise men in their fell wisdom, or subtle guile];

20 and again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of wise men, for those be vain [for they be vain].

21 Therefore no man have glory in men [And so no man glory in men]. For all things be yours,

22 either Paul, either Apollos, either Cephas, either the world, either life, either death, either things present, either things to coming [either things to come]; for all things be yours,

23 and ye be of Christ, and Christ is of God.

Paul rebukes the sects, and authors of sects. Christ is the foundation of his church. We must take heed how we build on this foundation. No one ought to glory in men, but in God.

And I could not speak to you brethren as to spiritual people, but as to carnal; even, as it were, to babes in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, and not meat. For you were not strong then, no, neither are you yet. For you are yet carnal. For as long as there is among you envying, strife, and dissension, are you not carnal, and walking after the manner of men? As long as one says, I hold to Paul, and another, I’m for Apollos, are you not carnal? What is Paul? What is Apollos? Only ministers they are, by whom you believed, even as the Lord gave grace to each one. I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then, neither is he who plants anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. He who plants and he who waters are neither better than the other. Each will receive his reward according to his labours.

We are God’s labourers. You are God’s husbandry, you are God’s building. 10 By the grace of God given to me, as a wise builder I have laid the foundation, and another built on it. But let everyone take heed how he builds upon it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 And whether anyone builds on this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or stubble, 13 his work will be seen for what it is. For the day will reveal it, and it will be shown in fire. And the fire shall try every person’s work, what it is. 14 If what someone has built remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work burns, he will suffer loss; but he will be saved himself, nevertheless yet as it were through fire.

16 Are you not aware that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. 18 Let no one deceive himself.

If any man seems wise among you, let him be a fool in this world so that he may be wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written: He compasses the wise in their craftiness. 20 And again: God knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

21 Therefore, let no one glory in men. For all things are yours – 22 whether it be Paul or Apollos or Cephas, whether it be the world or life or death, whether they be things present or things to come. All are yours, 23 and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.

  1. 1 Corinthians 3:1 Having declared the worthiness of heavenly wisdom, and of the Gospel, and having generally condemned the blindness of man’s mind, now at length he applieth it particularly to the Corinthians, calling them carnal, that is, such in whom as yet the flesh prevaileth against the spirit. And he bringeth a double testimony of it: first, for that he had proved them to be such, insomuch that he dealt with them no otherwise than with ignorant men, and such as are almost babes in the doctrine of godliness; and secondly, because they showed indeed by these dissensions, which sprang up by reason of the ignorance of the virtue of the Spirit, and heavenly wisdom, that they had profited very little or nothing.

Now, both these similitudes tend to this purpose, to show that all things are wholly accomplished by God’s only authority and might, so that we must only have an eye to him. Moreover, although that God useth some in the better part of the work, we must not therefore contemn others, in respect of them, and much less may we divide, or set them apart, (as these factious men did) seeing that all of them labor in God’s business, and in such sort, that they serve to finish one selfsame work, although by a divers manner of working, insomuch that they need one another’s help.
  8. 1 Corinthians 3:9 Serving under him: Now they which serve under another, do nothing by their own strength, but as it is given them by grace, which grace maketh them fit to that service.
