Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues
14 Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy. 2 For those who speak in a tongue do not speak to other people but to God; for nobody understands them, since they are speaking mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, those who prophesy speak to other people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 Those who speak in a tongue build up themselves, but those who prophesy build up the church. 5 Now I would like all of you to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. One who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
6 Now, brothers and sisters,[a] if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you in some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 It is the same way with lifeless instruments that produce sound, such as the flute or the harp. If they do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is being played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves; if in a tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is being said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different kinds of sounds in the world, and nothing is without sound. 11 If then I do not know the meaning of a sound, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church.
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive. 15 What should I do then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will sing praise with the spirit, but I will sing praise with the mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you say a blessing with the spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say the “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since the outsider does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may give thanks well enough, but the other person is not built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you; 19 nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brothers and sisters,[b] do not be children in your thinking; rather, be infants in evil, but in thinking be adults. 21 In the law it is written,
“By people of strange tongues
and by the lips of foreigners
I will speak to this people;
yet even then they will not listen to me,”
says the Lord. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if all prophesy, an unbeliever or outsider who enters is reproved by all and called to account by all. 25 After the secrets of the unbeliever’s heart are disclosed, that person will bow down before God and worship him, declaring, “God is really among you.”
Orderly Worship
26 What should be done then, my friends?[c] When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let them be silent in church and speak to themselves and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to someone else sitting nearby, let the first person be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of prophets are subject to the prophets, 33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace.
(As in all the churches of the saints, 34 women should be silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as the law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.[d] 36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?)
37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have spiritual powers, must acknowledge that what I am writing to you is a command of the Lord. 38 Anyone who does not recognize this is not to be recognized. 39 So, my friends,[e] be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues; 40 but all things should be done decently and in order.

2 Perché chi parla in altra lingua non parla agli uomini, ma a Dio; poiché nessuno lo capisce, ma in spirito dice cose misteriose. 3 Chi profetizza, invece, parla agli uomini un linguaggio di edificazione, di esortazione e di consolazione. 4 Chi parla in altra lingua edifica se stesso; ma chi profetizza edifica la chiesa.
5 Vorrei che tutti parlaste in altre lingue, ma molto più che profetizzaste; chi profetizza è superiore a chi parla in altre lingue, a meno che egli interpreti perché la chiesa ne riceva edificazione. 6 Dunque, fratelli, se io venissi a voi parlando in altre lingue, che vi servirebbe se la mia parola non vi recasse qualche rivelazione, o qualche conoscenza, o qualche profezia, o qualche insegnamento?
7 Perfino le cose inanimate che danno suono, come il flauto o la cetra, se non danno suoni distinti come si riconoscerà ciò che si suona con il flauto o con la cetra? 8 E se la tromba dà un suono sconosciuto, chi si preparerà alla battaglia? 9 Così anche voi, se con la lingua non proferite un discorso comprensibile come si capirà quello che dite? Parlerete al vento.
10 Ci sono nel mondo non so quante specie di linguaggi e nessun linguaggio è senza significato. 11 Se quindi non comprendo il significato[b] del linguaggio sarò uno straniero per chi parla, e chi parla sarà uno straniero per me. 12 Così anche voi, poiché desiderate i doni dello Spirito, cercate di abbondarne per l’edificazione della chiesa.
13 Perciò chi parla in altra lingua preghi di poter interpretare; 14 {poiché,} se prego in altra lingua, prega lo spirito mio, ma la mia intelligenza rimane infruttuosa. 15 Che dunque? Pregherò con lo spirito, ma pregherò anche con l’intelligenza; salmeggerò con lo spirito, ma salmeggerò anche con l’intelligenza. 16 Altrimenti, se tu benedici Dio soltanto con lo spirito, colui che occupa il posto come semplice uditore come potrà dire «Amen!» alla tua preghiera di ringraziamento, visto che non sa quello che tu dici? 17 Quanto a te, certo, tu fai un bel ringraziamento, ma l’altro non è edificato. 18 Io ringrazio Dio[c] che parlo in altre lingue più di tutti voi; 19 ma nella chiesa preferisco dire cinque parole intelligibili[d] per istruire anche gli altri, che dirne diecimila in altra lingua.
20 Fratelli, non siate bambini quanto al ragionare; siate pur bambini quanto a malizia, ma quanto al ragionare, siate uomini compiuti. 21 È scritto nella legge:
«Parlerò a questo popolo per mezzo di persone che parlano altre lingue e per mezzo di labbra straniere; e neppure così mi ascolteranno»[e], dice il Signore.
22 Quindi le lingue servono di segno non per i credenti, ma per i non credenti; la profezia, invece, serve di segno non per i non credenti, ma per i credenti. 23 Quando dunque tutta la chiesa si riunisce, se tutti parlano in altre lingue ed entrano degli estranei o dei non credenti, non diranno che siete pazzi? 24 Ma se tutti profetizzano ed entra qualche non credente o qualche estraneo, egli è convinto da tutti, è scrutato da tutti, 25 i segreti del suo cuore[f] sono svelati; e così, gettandosi giù con la faccia a terra, adorerà Dio, proclamando che Dio è veramente fra voi.
26 Che dunque, fratelli? Quando vi riunite, avendo ciascuno [di voi[g]] un salmo, o un insegnamento, o una rivelazione, o un parlare in altra lingua, o un’interpretazione, si faccia ogni cosa per l’edificazione. 27 Se c’è chi parla in altra lingua, siano due o tre al massimo a farlo e a turno, e uno interpreti. 28 Se non vi è chi interpreti, tacciano nell’assemblea e parlino a se stessi e a Dio. 29 Anche i profeti parlino in due o tre e gli altri giudichino; 30 se una rivelazione è data a uno di quelli che stanno seduti, il precedente taccia. 31 Infatti tutti potete profetizzare a uno a uno, perché tutti imparino e tutti siano incoraggiati. 32 Gli spiriti dei profeti sono sottoposti ai profeti, 33 perché Dio non è un Dio di confusione, ma di pace.
34 Come si fa in tutte le chiese dei santi, le [vostre] donne tacciano nelle assemblee, perché non è loro permesso di parlare; stiano sottomesse, come dice anche la legge. 35 Se vogliono imparare qualcosa, interroghino i loro mariti a casa; perché è vergognoso per una donna parlare in assemblea. 36 La parola di Dio è forse proceduta da voi? O è forse pervenuta a voi soli?
37 Se qualcuno pensa di essere profeta o spirituale[h], riconosca che le cose che io vi scrivo sono comandamenti del Signore[i]. 38 E se qualcuno lo vuole ignorare, lo ignori[j].
39 Pertanto, fratelli miei[k], desiderate il profetizzare e non impedite il parlare in altre lingue; 40 ma ogni cosa sia fatta con dignità e con ordine.

Die Geisteswirkungen sollen zur Erbauung der Gemeinde dienen
14 Strebt nach der Liebe, doch bemüht euch auch eifrig um die Geisteswirkungen; am meisten aber, dass ihr weissagt!
2 Denn wer in Sprachen redet, der redet nicht für Menschen, sondern für Gott; denn niemand versteht es, sondern er redet Geheimnisse im Geist.
3 Wer aber weissagt, der redet für Menschen zur Erbauung, zur Ermahnung und zum Trost.
4 Wer in einer Sprache redet, erbaut sich selbst; wer aber weissagt, erbaut die Gemeinde.
5 Ich wünschte, dass ihr alle in Sprachen reden würdet, noch viel mehr aber, dass ihr weissagen würdet. Denn wer weissagt, ist größer, als wer in Sprachen redet; es sei denn, dass er es auslegt, damit die Gemeinde Erbauung empfängt.
6 Nun aber, ihr Brüder, wenn ich zu euch käme und in Sprachen redete, was würde ich euch nützen, wenn ich nicht zu euch redete, sei es durch Offenbarung oder durch Erkenntnis oder durch Weissagung oder durch Lehre?
7 Ist es doch ebenso mit den leblosen Instrumenten, die einen Laut von sich geben, sei es eine Flöte oder eine Harfe; wenn sie nicht bestimmte Töne geben, wie kann man erkennen, was auf der Flöte oder auf der Harfe gespielt wird?
8 Ebenso auch, wenn die Posaune einen undeutlichen Ton gibt, wer wird sich zum Kampf rüsten?
9 So auch ihr, wenn ihr durch die Sprache nicht eine verständliche Rede gebt, wie kann man verstehen, was geredet wird? Denn ihr werdet in den Wind reden.
10 Es gibt wohl mancherlei Arten von Stimmen in der Welt, und keine von ihnen ist ohne Laut.
11 Wenn ich nun den Sinn des Lautes nicht kenne, so werde ich dem Redenden ein Fremder sein und der Redende für mich ein Fremder.
12 Also auch ihr, da ihr eifrig nach Geisteswirkungen trachtet, strebt danach, dass ihr zur Erbauung der Gemeinde Überfluss habt!
13 Darum: Wer in einer Sprache redet, der bete, dass er es auch auslegen kann.
14 Denn wenn ich in einer Sprache bete, so betet zwar mein Geist, aber mein Verstand ist ohne Frucht.
15 Wie soll es nun sein? Ich will mit dem Geist beten, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstand beten; ich will mit dem Geist lobsingen, ich will aber auch mit dem Verstand lobsingen.
16 Sonst, wenn du mit dem Geist den Lobpreis sprichst, wie soll der, welcher die Stelle des Unkundigen einnimmt, das Amen sprechen zu deiner Danksagung, da er nicht weiß, was du sagst?
17 Du magst wohl schön danksagen, aber der andere wird nicht erbaut.
18 Ich danke meinem Gott, dass ich mehr in Sprachen rede als ihr alle.
19 Aber in der Gemeinde will ich lieber fünf Worte mit meinem Verstand reden, damit ich auch andere unterweise, als zehntausend Worte in einer Sprache.
20 Ihr Brüder, werdet nicht Kinder im Verständnis, sondern in der Bosheit seid Unmündige, im Verständnis aber werdet erwachsen.
21 Im Gesetz steht geschrieben: »Ich will mit fremden Sprachen und mit fremden Lippen zu diesem Volk reden, aber auch so werden sie nicht auf mich hören, spricht der Herr«.[a]
22 Darum dienen die Sprachen als ein Zeichen, und zwar nicht für die Gläubigen, sondern für die Ungläubigen; die Weissagung aber ist nicht für die Ungläubigen, sondern für die Gläubigen.
23 Wenn nun die ganze Gemeinde am selben Ort zusammenkäme, und alle würden in Sprachen reden, und es kämen Unkundige oder Ungläubige herein, würden sie nicht sagen, dass ihr von Sinnen seid?
24 Wenn aber alle weissagten, und es käme ein Ungläubiger oder Unkundiger herein, so würde er von allen überführt, von allen erforscht;
25 und so würde das Verborgene seines Herzens offenbar, und so würde er auf sein Angesicht fallen und Gott anbeten und bekennen, dass Gott wahrhaftig in euch ist.
Geistliche Ordnung in den Gemeindezusammenkünften
26 Wie ist es nun, ihr Brüder? Wenn ihr zusammenkommt, so hat jeder von euch etwas: einen Psalm, eine Lehre, eine Sprachenrede, eine Offenbarung, eine Auslegung; alles lasst zur Erbauung geschehen!
27 Wenn jemand in einer Sprache reden will, so sollen es zwei, höchstens drei sein, und der Reihe nach, und einer soll es auslegen[b].
28 Ist aber kein Ausleger da, so schweige er in der Gemeinde; er mag aber für sich selbst und für Gott reden.
29 Propheten aber sollen zwei oder drei reden, und die anderen sollen es beurteilen.
30 Wenn aber einem anderen, der dasitzt, eine Offenbarung zuteilwird, so soll der erste schweigen.
31 Denn ihr könnt alle einer nach dem anderen weissagen, damit alle lernen und alle ermahnt werden.
32 Und die Geister[c] der Propheten sind den Propheten untertan.
33 Denn Gott ist nicht ein Gott der Unordnung, sondern des Friedens, wie in allen Gemeinden der Heiligen.
34 Eure Frauen sollen in den Gemeinden schweigen; denn es ist ihnen nicht gestattet zu reden, sondern sie sollen sich unterordnen, wie es auch das Gesetz sagt.
35 Wenn sie aber etwas lernen wollen, so sollen sie daheim ihre eigenen Männer fragen; denn es ist für Frauen schändlich, in der Gemeinde zu reden.
36 Oder ist von euch das Wort Gottes ausgegangen? Oder ist es zu euch allein gekommen?
37 Wenn jemand glaubt, ein Prophet zu sein oder geistlich, der erkenne, dass die Dinge, die ich euch schreibe, Gebote des Herrn sind.
38 Wenn es aber jemand missachten will, der missachte es!
39 Also, ihr Brüder, strebt danach, zu weissagen, und das Reden in Sprachen verhindert nicht.
40 Lasst alles anständig und ordentlich zugehen!

Nyelveken való szólás és prófétálás
14 Törekedjetek a szeretetre, buzgón kérjétek a lelki ajándékokat, de leginkább azt, hogy prófétáljatok.
2 Mert aki nyelveken szól, nem emberekhez szól, hanem Istenhez. Nem is érti meg őt senki, mert a Lélek által szól titkokat.
3 Aki pedig prófétál, emberekhez szól, és ezzel épít, bátorít, vigasztal.
4 Aki nyelveken szól, önmagát építi, aki pedig prófétál, a gyülekezetet építi.
5 Szeretném ugyan, ha mindnyájan szólnátok nyelveken, de még inkább, ha prófétálnátok; mert nagyobb az, aki prófétál, mint az, aki nyelveken szól, kivéve, ha meg is magyarázza, hogy a gyülekezet is épüljön belőle.
6 Ha pedig, testvéreim, elmegyek hozzátok, és nyelveken szólok, mit használok nektek, ha nem szólok hozzátok egyúttal kinyilatkoztatásban vagy ismeretben, prófétálásban vagy tanításban?
7 Az élettelen hangszerek, akár fuvola, akár lant, ha nem adnak különböző hangokat, hogyan ismerjük fel, amit a fuvolán vagy a lanton játszanak?
8 Ha pedig a trombita bizonytalan hangot ad, ki fog a harcra készülni?
9 Így van veletek is, amikor nyelveken szóltok: ha nem szóltok világosan, hogyan fogják megérteni, amit beszéltek? Csak a levegőbe fogtok beszélni.
10 Ki tudja, hányféle nyelv van ezen a világon, és egyik sem értelmetlen.
11 Ha tehát nem ismerem a nyelvet, a beszélőnek idegen maradok, és a beszélő is idegen lesz nekem.
12 Ezért ti is, mivel rajongtok a lelki ajándékokért, arra igyekezzetek, hogy gazdagodásotok a gyülekezet építését szolgálja.
13 Ezért aki nyelveken szól, imádkozzék azért, hogy magyarázatot is tudjon adni.
14 Mert ha nyelveken szólva imádkozom, a lelkem ugyan imádkozik, de az értelmemet nem használom.
15 Hogyan is van tehát ez a dolog? Imádkozom lélekkel, de imádkozom értelemmel is, dicséretet éneklek lélekkel, de dicséretet éneklek értelemmel is.
16 Mert ha csak lélekkel mondasz dicséretet, akkor aki az avatatlanok helyét foglalja el, hogyan fog áment mondani a te hálaadásodra, amikor nem is tudja, mit beszélsz?
17 Mert te ugyan szépen adsz hálát, de a másik nem épül belőle.
18 Hálát adok az Istennek, hogy mindnyájatoknál jobban tudok nyelveken szólni,
19 de a gyülekezetben inkább akarok öt szót kimondani értelemmel, hogy másokat is tanítsak, mintsem tízezer szót nyelveken.
20 Testvéreim, ne legyetek gyermekek a gondolkozásban, hanem a rosszban legyetek kiskorúak, a gondolkozásban ellenben érettek legyetek.
21 A törvényben meg van írva: "Idegen nyelveken és idegenek ajkával fogok szólni ehhez a néphez, és így sem hallgatnak rám", ezt mondja az Úr.
22 Úgyhogy a nyelveken való szólás jel, de nem a hivőknek, hanem a hitetleneknek, a prófétálás pedig nem a hitetleneknek, hanem a hívőknek szól.
23 Ha tehát összejön az egész gyülekezet, és mindnyájan nyelveken szólnak, és közben bemennek oda az avatatlanok vagy a hitetlenek, nem azt fogják-e mondani, hogy őrjöngtök?
24 De ha valamennyien prófétálnak, és bemegy egy hitetlen vagy be nem avatott, annak mindenki a lelkére beszél, azt mindenki megvizsgálja,
25 és így szívének titkai nyilvánvalóvá lesznek, úgyhogy arcra borulva imádja az Istent, és hirdeti, hogy az Isten valóban közöttetek van.
A gyülekezeti összejövetel rendje
26 Mi következik mindezekből, testvéreim? Amikor összejöttök, kinek-kinek van zsoltára, tanítása, kinyilatkoztatása, nyelveken szólása, magyarázata: minden épüléseteket szolgálja!
27 Ha nyelveken szól is valaki, ketten vagy legfeljebb hárman szóljanak, mégpedig egymás után; egy valaki pedig magyarázza meg.
28 Ha pedig nincs magyarázó, hallgasson a gyülekezetben, csak önmagához szóljon és az Istenhez.
29 A próféták pedig ketten vagy hárman szóljanak, a többiek pedig ítéljék meg.
30 De ha közben az ott ülők közül egy másik kap kinyilatkoztatást, az előző hallgasson el.
31 Mert egyenként mindnyájan prófétálhattok, hogy mindenki tanuljon, és mindenki bátorítást kapjon.
32 A prófétákban lévő lélek pedig alárendeli magát a prófétáknak.
33 Mert Isten nem a zűrzavarnak, hanem a békességnek Istene. Mint ahogyan ez a szentek valamennyi gyülekezetében történik,
34 az asszonyok hallgassanak a gyülekezetekben, mert nincs megengedve nekik, hogy beszéljenek, hanem engedelmeskedjenek, ahogyan a törvény is mondja.
35 Ha pedig meg akarnak tudni valamit, otthon kérdezzék meg a férjüket, mert illetlen az asszonynak a gyülekezetben beszélnie.
36 Vajon tőletek indult ki az Isten igéje, vagy egyedül hozzátok jutott el?
37 Ha valaki azt tartja magáról, hogy próféta vagy Lélektől megragadott ember, tudja meg, hogy amit nektek írok, az az Úr parancsolata.
38 És ha valaki ezt nem ismeri el, ne ismertessék el.
39 Ezért, testvéreim, törekedjetek a prófétálásra, de a nyelveken való szólást se akadályozzátok.
40 Azonban minden illendően és rendben történjék.
