²⁴ The gatekeepers served in the four directions of the east, the west, the north, and the south. ²⁵ Their brethren who lived in the villages would come up to join them for a period of seven days from time to time.

²⁶ There were four Levites who held the office of chief gatekeepers. They were responsible for the chambers and the treasuries of the temple of the Lord.
