1 Chronicles 16
New International Version
Ministering Before the Ark(A)(B)(C)
16Â They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched(D) for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. 2Â After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed(E) the people in the name of the Lord. 3Â Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins(F) to each Israelite man and woman.
4Â He appointed some of the Levites to minister(G) before the ark of the Lord, to extol,[a] thank, and praise the Lord, the God of Israel: 5Â Asaph was the chief, and next to him in rank were Zechariah, then Jaaziel,[b] Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom and Jeiel. They were to play the lyres and harps, Asaph was to sound the cymbals, 6Â and Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests were to blow the trumpets regularly before the ark of the covenant of God.
7Â That day David first appointed Asaph and his associates to give praise(H) to the Lord in this manner:
8Â Give praise(I) to the Lord, proclaim his name;
make known among the nations(J) what he has done.
9Â Sing to him, sing praise(K) to him;
tell of all his wonderful acts.
10Â Glory in his holy name;(L)
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
11Â Look to the Lord and his strength;
seek(M) his face always.
12Â Remember(N) the wonders(O) he has done,
his miracles,(P) and the judgments he pronounced,
13Â you his servants, the descendants of Israel,
his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.
14Â He is the Lord our God;
his judgments(Q) are in all the earth.
15Â He remembers[c](R) his covenant forever,
the promise he made, for a thousand generations,
16Â the covenant(S) he made with Abraham,
the oath he swore to Isaac.
17Â He confirmed it to Jacob(T) as a decree,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant:
18Â âTo you I will give the land of Canaan(U)
as the portion you will inherit.â
19Â When they were but few in number,(V)
few indeed, and strangers in it,
20Â they[d] wandered(W) from nation to nation,
from one kingdom to another.
21Â He allowed no one to oppress them;
for their sake he rebuked kings:(X)
22Â âDo not touch my anointed ones;
do my prophets(Y) no harm.â
23Â Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
24Â Declare his glory(Z) among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
25Â For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;(AA)
he is to be feared(AB) above all gods.(AC)
26Â For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.(AD)
27Â Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.
28Â Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.(AE)
29Â Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;(AF)
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[e] holiness.(AG)
30Â Tremble(AH) before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.(AI)
31Â Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;(AJ)
let them say among the nations, âThe Lord reigns!(AK)â
32Â Let the sea resound, and all that is in it;(AL)
let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them!
33Â Let the trees(AM) of the forest sing,
let them sing for joy before the Lord,
for he comes to judge(AN) the earth.
34Â Give thanks(AO) to the Lord, for he is good;(AP)
his love endures forever.(AQ)
35Â Cry out, âSave us, God our Savior;(AR)
gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name,
and glory in your praise.â
36Â Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,(AS)
from everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people said âAmenâ and âPraise the Lord.â
37Â David left Asaph and his associates before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister there regularly, according to each dayâs requirements.(AT) 38Â He also left Obed-Edom(AU) and his sixty-eight associates to minister with them. Obed-Edom son of Jeduthun, and also Hosah,(AV) were gatekeepers.
39Â David left Zadok(AW) the priest and his fellow priests before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place in Gibeon(AX) 40Â to present burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly, morning and evening, in accordance with everything written in the Law(AY) of the Lord, which he had given Israel. 41Â With them were Heman(AZ) and Jeduthun and the rest of those chosen and designated by name to give thanks to the Lord, âfor his love endures forever.â 42Â Heman and Jeduthun were responsible for the sounding of the trumpets and cymbals and for the playing of the other instruments for sacred song.(BA) The sons of Jeduthun(BB) were stationed at the gate.
43Â Then all the people left, each for their own home, and David returned home to bless his family.

Psalm 106(A)
2Â Who can proclaim the mighty acts(E) of the Lord
or fully declare his praise?
3Â Blessed are those who act justly,(F)
who always do what is right.(G)
4Â Remember me,(H) Lord, when you show favor(I) to your people,
come to my aid(J) when you save them,
5Â that I may enjoy the prosperity(K) of your chosen ones,(L)
that I may share in the joy(M) of your nation
and join your inheritance(N) in giving praise.
6Â We have sinned,(O) even as our ancestors(P) did;
we have done wrong and acted wickedly.(Q)
7Â When our ancestors were in Egypt,
they gave no thought(R) to your miracles;
they did not remember(S) your many kindnesses,
and they rebelled by the sea,(T) the Red Sea.[b]
8Â Yet he saved them(U) for his nameâs sake,(V)
to make his mighty power(W) known.
9Â He rebuked(X) the Red Sea, and it dried up;(Y)
he led them through(Z) the depths as through a desert.
10Â He saved them(AA) from the hand of the foe;(AB)
from the hand of the enemy he redeemed them.(AC)
11Â The waters covered(AD) their adversaries;
not one of them survived.
12Â Then they believed his promises
and sang his praise.(AE)
13Â But they soon forgot(AF) what he had done
and did not wait for his plan to unfold.(AG)
14Â In the desert(AH) they gave in to their craving;
in the wilderness(AI) they put God to the test.(AJ)
15Â So he gave them(AK) what they asked for,
but sent a wasting disease(AL) among them.
16Â In the camp they grew envious(AM) of Moses
and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the Lord.
17Â The earth opened(AN) up and swallowed Dathan;(AO)
it buried the company of Abiram.(AP)
18Â Fire blazed(AQ) among their followers;
a flame consumed the wicked.
19Â At Horeb they made a calf(AR)
and worshiped an idol cast from metal.
20Â They exchanged their glorious God(AS)
for an image of a bull, which eats grass.
21Â They forgot the God(AT) who saved them,
who had done great things(AU) in Egypt,
22Â miracles in the land of Ham(AV)
and awesome deeds(AW) by the Red Sea.
23Â So he said he would destroy(AX) themâ
had not Moses, his chosen one,
stood in the breach(AY) before him
to keep his wrath from destroying them.
24Â Then they despised(AZ) the pleasant land;(BA)
they did not believe(BB) his promise.
25Â They grumbled(BC) in their tents
and did not obey the Lord.
26Â So he swore(BD) to them with uplifted hand
that he would make them fall in the wilderness,(BE)
27Â make their descendants fall among the nations
and scatter(BF) them throughout the lands.
28Â They yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor(BG)
and ate sacrifices offered to lifeless gods;
29Â they aroused the Lordâs anger(BH) by their wicked deeds,(BI)
and a plague(BJ) broke out among them.
30Â But Phinehas(BK) stood up and intervened,
and the plague was checked.(BL)
31Â This was credited to him(BM) as righteousness
for endless generations(BN) to come.
32Â By the waters of Meribah(BO) they angered the Lord,
and trouble came to Moses because of them;
33Â for they rebelled(BP) against the Spirit(BQ) of God,
and rash words came from Mosesâ lips.[c](BR)
34Â They did not destroy(BS) the peoples
as the Lord had commanded(BT) them,
35Â but they mingled(BU) with the nations
and adopted their customs.
36Â They worshiped their idols,(BV)
which became a snare(BW) to them.
37Â They sacrificed their sons(BX)
and their daughters to false gods.(BY)
38Â They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their sons(BZ) and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
and the land was desecrated by their blood.
39Â They defiled themselves(CA) by what they did;
by their deeds they prostituted(CB) themselves.
40Â Therefore the Lord was angry(CC) with his people
and abhorred his inheritance.(CD)
41Â He gave them into the hands(CE) of the nations,
and their foes ruled over them.
42Â Their enemies oppressed(CF) them
and subjected them to their power.
43Â Many times he delivered them,(CG)
but they were bent on rebellion(CH)
and they wasted away in their sin.
44Â Yet he took note of their distress
when he heard their cry;(CI)
45Â for their sake he remembered his covenant(CJ)
and out of his great love(CK) he relented.(CL)
46Â He caused all who held them captive
to show them mercy.(CM)
47Â Save us,(CN) Lord our God,
and gather us(CO) from the nations,
that we may give thanks(CP) to your holy name(CQ)
and glory in your praise.
48Â Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say, âAmen!â(CR)
Praise the Lord.

New International Version
Divorce(A)
19Â When Jesus had finished saying these things,(B) he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2Â Large crowds followed him, and he healed them(C) there.
3Â Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, âIs it lawful for a man to divorce his wife(D) for any and every reason?â
4Â âHavenât you read,â he replied, âthat at the beginning the Creator âmade them male and female,â[a](E) 5Â and said, âFor this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one fleshâ[b]?(F) 6Â So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.â
7Â âWhy then,â they asked, âdid Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?â(G)
8Â Jesus replied, âMoses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9Â I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.â(H)
10Â The disciples said to him, âIf this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.â
11Â Jesus replied, âNot everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.(I) 12Â For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by othersâand there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.â
The Little Children and Jesus(J)
13Â Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them(K) and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them.
14Â Jesus said, âLet the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs(L) to such as these.â(M) 15Â When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.
The Rich and the Kingdom of God(N)
16Â Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, âTeacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life(O)?â(P)
17Â âWhy do you ask me about what is good?â Jesus replied. âThere is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.â(Q)
18Â âWhich ones?â he inquired.
Jesus replied, ââYou shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,(R) you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19Â honor your father and mother,â[c](S) and âlove your neighbor as yourself.â[d]â(T)
20Â âAll these I have kept,â the young man said. âWhat do I still lack?â
21Â Jesus answered, âIf you want to be perfect,(U) go, sell your possessions and give to the poor,(V) and you will have treasure in heaven.(W) Then come, follow me.â
22Â When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23Â Then Jesus said to his disciples, âTruly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich(X) to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Â Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.â
25Â When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, âWho then can be saved?â
26Â Jesus looked at them and said, âWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.â(Y)
27Â Peter answered him, âWe have left everything to follow you!(Z) What then will there be for us?â
28Â Jesus said to them, âTruly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,(AA) you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(AB) 29Â And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife[e] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.(AC) 30Â But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.(AD)
