Atonement Money
11 Then the Lord said to Moses, 12 “When you take a census(E) of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom(F) for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague(G) will come on them when you number them. 13 Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel,[b] according to the sanctuary shekel,(H) which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the Lord. 14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more,(I) are to give an offering to the Lord. 15 The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less(J) when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives. 16 Receive the atonement(K) money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the tent of meeting.(L) It will be a memorial(M) for the Israelites before the Lord, making atonement for your lives.”

18 The Levitical(A) priests—indeed, the whole tribe of Levi—are to have no allotment or inheritance with Israel. 32 And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
33 They, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation.
34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also.
35 And there came out a fire from the Lord, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are hallowed.
38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls, let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before the Lord, therefore they are hallowed: and they shall be a sign unto the children of Israel.
39 And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers, wherewith they that were burnt had offered; and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar:
40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near to offer incense before the Lord; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the Lord said to him by the hand of Moses.
41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the Lord.
42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation: and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.
43 And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation.
44 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
45 Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them as in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.
46 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the Lord; the plague is begun.

10 And the Lord said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.
11 And Moses did so: as the Lord commanded him, so did he.
12 And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.
13 Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the Lord shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?

22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown(H) and cried out, “O God, the God who gives breath to all living things,(I) will you be angry with the entire assembly(J) when only one man sins?”(K)
23 Then the Lord said to Moses, 24 “Say to the assembly, ‘Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”
25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel(L) followed him. 26 He warned the assembly, “Move back from the tents of these wicked men!(M) Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away(N) because of all their sins.(O)” 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.(P) Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children(Q) and little ones at the entrances to their tents.(R)
28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know(S) that the Lord has sent me(T) to do all these things and that it was not my idea: 29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.(U) 30 But if the Lord brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth(V) and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead,(W) then you will know that these men have treated the Lord with contempt.(X)”
31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart(Y) 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them(Z) and their households, and all those associated with Korah, together with their possessions. 33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead,(AA) with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”
35 And fire came out from the Lord(AB) and consumed(AC) the 250 men who were offering the incense.
36 The Lord said to Moses, 37 “Tell Eleazar(AD) son of Aaron, the priest, to remove the censers(AE) from the charred remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy— 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives.(AF) Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar,(AG) for they were presented before the Lord and have become holy. Let them be a sign(AH) to the Israelites.”
39 So Eleazar the priest(AI) collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned to death,(AJ) and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, 40 as the Lord directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense(AK) before the Lord,(AL) or he would become like Korah and his followers.(AM)
41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said.
42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition(AN) to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the tent of meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the Lord(AO) appeared. 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from this assembly so I can put an end(AP) to them at once.” And they fell facedown.
46 Then Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer(AQ) and put incense in it, along with burning coals from the altar, and hurry to the assembly(AR) to make atonement(AS) for them. Wrath has come out from the Lord;(AT) the plague(AU) has started.” 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people,(AV) but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.(AW) 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah.(AX) 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the tent of meeting, for the plague had stopped.[a]
The Budding of Aaron’s Staff
17 [b]The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and get twelve staffs(AY) from them, one from the leader of each of their ancestral tribes.(AZ) Write the name of each man on his staff. 3 On the staff of Levi write Aaron’s name,(BA) for there must be one staff for the head of each ancestral tribe. 4 Place them in the tent of meeting(BB) in front of the ark of the covenant law,(BC) where I meet with you.(BD) 5 The staff belonging to the man I choose(BE) will sprout,(BF) and I will rid myself of this constant grumbling(BG) against you by the Israelites.”
6 So Moses spoke to the Israelites, and their leaders gave him twelve staffs, one for the leader of each of their ancestral tribes, and Aaron’s staff was among them. 7 Moses placed the staffs before the Lord in the tent of the covenant law.(BH)
8 The next day Moses entered the tent(BI) and saw that Aaron’s staff,(BJ) which represented the tribe of Levi, had not only sprouted but had budded, blossomed and produced almonds.(BK) 9 Then Moses brought out all the staffs(BL) from the Lord’s presence to all the Israelites. They looked at them, and each of the leaders took his own staff.
10 The Lord said to Moses, “Put back Aaron’s staff(BM) in front of the ark of the covenant law, to be kept as a sign to the rebellious.(BN) This will put an end to their grumbling against me, so that they will not die.” 11 Moses did just as the Lord commanded him.
12 The Israelites said to Moses, “We will die! We are lost, we are all lost!(BO) 13 Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die.(BP) Are we all going to die?”
