Jesus Betrayed

18 After^(A) Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it. ² Judas,^(B) who betrayed^(C) him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples. ³ So Judas took a company of soldiers and some officials^[a] from the chief priests and the Pharisees^(D) and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

⁴ Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him,^(E) went out and said to them, “Who is it that you’re seeking?”

⁵ “Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.

“I am he,”^(F) Jesus told them.

Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them. ⁶ When Jesus told them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.

⁷ Then he asked them again, “Who is it that you’re seeking?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

⁸ “I told you I am he,” Jesus replied. “So if you’re looking for me, let these men go.” ⁹ This was to fulfill^(G) the words he had said: “I have not lost one of those you have given me.”^(H)

¹⁰ Then Simon^(I) Peter,^(J) who had a sword,^(K) drew it, struck the high priest’s^(L) servant, and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)

¹¹ At that, Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup^(M) the Father has given me?”

Jesus Arrested and Taken to Annas

¹² Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus and tied him up. ¹³ First they led him to Annas,^(N) since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas,^(O) who was high priest that year. ¹⁴ Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better for one man to die for the people.^(P)

Peter Denies Jesus

¹⁵ Simon Peter^(Q) was following Jesus, as was another disciple. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high priest; so he went with Jesus into the high priest’s courtyard. ¹⁶ But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

¹⁷ Then the servant girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?”

“I am not,” he said. ¹⁸ Now the servants and the officials had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.

Jesus before Annas

¹⁹ The high priest^(R) questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.

²⁰ “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him. “I have always taught in the synagogue^(S) and in the temple,^(T) where all the Jews gather, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret. ²¹ Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.”

²² When he had said these things, one of the officials standing by slapped Jesus, saying, “Is this the way you answer the high priest?”

²³ “If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him, “give evidence^[b] about the wrong; but if rightly,^(U) why do you hit me?” ²⁴ Then^(V) Annas^(W) sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Peter Denies Jesus Twice More

²⁵ Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not.”

²⁶ One of the high priest’s servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” ²⁷ Peter denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.^(X)

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

⁵⁷ Those^(A) who had arrested Jesus led him away to Caiaphas^(B) the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened. ⁵⁸ Peter was following him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and was sitting with the servants to see the outcome.^(C)

⁵⁹ The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,^{(D) 60} but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses^(E) came forward.^[a] Finally, two^[b] who came forward ⁶¹ stated, “This man said, ‘I can destroy the temple of God^(F) and rebuild it in three days.’”

⁶² The high priest stood up and said to him, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?” ⁶³ But^(G) Jesus kept silent.^(H) The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath^(I) by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”^(J)

⁶⁴ “You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future^[c] you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”^[d](K)

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed!^(L) Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.^{(M) 66} What is your decision?”

They answered, “He deserves death!” ^{(N) 67} Then they spat in his face^(O) and beat him; others slapped him ⁶⁸ and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who was it that hit you?” ^(P)

Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.^(Q) A servant girl approached him and said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”

⁷⁰ But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

⁷¹ When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!” ^(R)

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath:^(S) “I don’t know the man!”

⁷³ After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You really are one of them, since even your accent^[e] gives you away.”

⁷⁴ Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, “I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed, ⁷⁵ and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”^(T) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

⁵³ They^(A) led Jesus away to the high priest,^(B) and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes^(C) assembled.^{(D) 54} Peter^(E) followed him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants,^[a](F) warming himself by the fire.

⁵⁵ The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin^(G) were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death,^(H) but they could not find any. ⁵⁶ For many were giving false testimony^(I) against him, and the testimonies did not agree. ⁵⁷ Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, stating, ⁵⁸ “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands,^(J) and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’” ⁵⁹ Yet their testimony did not agree^(K) even on this.

⁶⁰ Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?” ⁶¹ But he kept silent and did not answer.^(L) Again the high priest questioned him, “Are you the Messiah,^(M) the Son^(N) of the Blessed^(O) One?”

⁶² “I am,”^(P) said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man^(Q) seated at the right hand^(R) of Power and coming with the clouds^(S) of heaven.”^[b](T)

⁶³ Then the high priest^(U) tore his robes^(V) and said, “Why do we still need witnesses?^{(W) 64} You have heard the blasphemy.^(X) What is your decision?” They all condemned him as deserving death.^(Y)

⁶⁵ Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying, “Prophesy!” ^(Z) The temple servants^(AA) also took him and slapped him.

Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁶ While^(AB) Peter^(AC) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s maidservants came. ⁶⁷ When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth.”^(AD)

⁶⁸ But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway,^[c] and a rooster crowed.^[d]

⁶⁹ When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”

⁷⁰ But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean.”^[e](AE)

⁷¹ Then he started to curse and swear,^(AF) “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

⁷² Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,^(AG) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Peter Denies His Lord

⁵⁴ They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter^(A) was following at a distance. ⁵⁵ They^(B) lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard^(C) and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. ⁵⁶ When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with him too.”

⁵⁷ But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know him.”

⁵⁸ After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter said.

⁵⁹ About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.”

⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ⁶¹ Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.^(D) So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.”^{(E) 62} And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

⁶³ The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him.^{(F) 64} After blindfolding him, they kept^[a] asking, “Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?” ⁶⁵ And they were saying many other blasphemous^(G) things to him.
