神に立ち返らないイスラエル
4 私の言うことを聞きなさい、
サマリヤに住むバシャンの太った雌牛たち。
夫をけしかけて貧しい人から取り上げ、
困っている者からしぼり取っている女たち。
いくら飲んでも十分でない者たちよ。
2 あなたがたの鼻に鼻輪をつけて、
牛のように引いて行く時がくると
神である主は、ご自分のきよさにかけて誓いました。
最後の一人まで、
釣り鉤にかけられて引かれて行きます。
3 美しい家から引きずり出され、
城壁の破れ口から放り出されます。
主がそう言ったのです。
4 ベテルとギルガルの偶像に
もっといけにえをささげなさい。
いつまでも逆らい続けなさい。
あなたがたの罪は山のように積まれていきます。
いけにえは毎朝、
十分の一のささげ物は週に二回持ってきなさい。
5 すべて適切な方法で行い、特別のささげ物もしなさい。
あなたがたは、そうすることを得意がり、
どこでもそれを自慢しています。
6 主はこう言います。
「あなたがたを飢えさせたが、何にもならなかった。
それでも、わたしのもとに帰ろうとはしなかった。
7 収穫の前に三か月間雨を降らせないで
作物をだめにした。
ある町には雨を降らせたが、
他の町には降らせなかった。
ある畑には雨が降っているのに、
他の畑は乾ききっていた。
8 二、三の町の住民が飲み水を求めて、
雨の降った町へ疲れきった体で出かけて行った。
それでも満ち足りることはなかった。
そんなことがあっても、
あなたがたはわたしのもとへ帰ろうとしなかった」
と主は言います。
9 主はこう告げます。
「立ち枯れ病と黒穂病を、農場やぶどう畑ではやらせた。
いなごがいちじくとオリーブの木を食った。
それでもあなたがたは、
わたしのもとへ帰ろうとしなかった。
10 昔のエジプトのように、わたしは疫病を送った。
戦争で若者を殺し、馬を追い払った。
死体からの悪臭が鼻をついた。
それでもあなたがたは、帰ることを拒んだ。
11 わたしはソドムとゴモラにしたように、
あなたがたの町の幾つかを破壊した。
生き残った者たちは、
火の中から取り出された燃えさしのようだ。
それでも、わたしのもとへ帰ろうとしない。
12 それゆえ、話しておいたとおり、
あなたがたをもっとひどい災いに会わせる。
イスラエルよ、
さばきの中で神に会う備えをせよ。」
13 山々を造り、風を造り、あなたがたの思いを
全部知っている方と向かい合うことになるからだ。
その方は、朝を暗闇に変え、山を踏み砕く。
その名は、全能の神、主である。
悲しみの歌と悔い改めへの招き
5 イスラエルよ。私は悲痛な思いで、あなたがたのためにこの悲しみの歌を歌います。
2 「美しいおとめイスラエルは砕かれて倒れ、
地に押しつぶされて、起き上がることができない。
助けてくれる者もなく、孤独のうちに死んでいく。」
3 神である主がこう言うからです。
「戦場に千人を送り出した町には百人が帰り、
百人を送り出した町には十人だけ帰って来る。」
4 主はイスラエルの民に告げます。
「わたしを求めよ。そして生きよ。
5 ベテルやギルガルやベエル・シェバの偶像を求めるな。
ギルガルの民は連れ去られ、
ベテルの民には必ず悲しみが襲いかかる。」
6 主を求めて、生きなさい。
さもないと、主は炎のように
イスラエルを通り過ぎて焼き尽くします。
ベテルの偶像はどれも、その火を消すことができません。
7 邪悪な者たち。
あなたがたは正義の名のもとに
貧しい人を虐げています。
正義も公正も、あなたがたには無意味な絵空事です。
8 すばる座やオリオン座を造った方を求めなさい。
その方は、闇を朝に、昼を夜に変え、
海から水を呼んで地上に雨として降らせます。
その名は主。
9 目にもとまらぬ速さと力で、強い者を打ちのめし、
すべての要塞をつぶします。
10 あなたがたは公平な裁判官を憎んでいます。
真実を告げる者をさげすんでいます。
11 貧しい者たちを踏みつけ、税や罰金や利子と言っては、
わずかしかない持ち物を取り上げています。
それゆえ、今建てている石造りの美しい家に、
あなたがたは決して住めません。
今植えている見事なぶどう園から作る
ぶどう酒も飲めません。
12 あなたがたの罪が極悪で、
いかに数多いかを知っています。
あなたがたは、良いことすべてに反対しています。
わいろを取り、
貧しい人の益になることは何もしません。
13 それゆえ賢い者たちは、
あなたがたが罰せられる恐ろしい日には、
主に口出しをしようとはしません。
14 正しいことをし、悪から逃げなさい。
そのように生きなさい。
そうすれば、願いどおり、
全能の主が助けてくれます。
15 悪を憎み、善を愛して、正しい裁判を行いなさい。
あるいは、天の軍勢の神である主が、
残っているご自身の民を
あわれんでくださるかもしれない。
16 それゆえ、神である主は言います。
「あちらの通りでもこちらの道でも、叫ぶ声が起こる。
農夫を呼んで、いっしょに泣いてくれるように頼め。
泣き男や泣き女を呼んで、大いに嘆かせよ。
17 わたしが通り過ぎて破壊するので、
どのぶどう畑にも悲しみと叫びがある。
主の日
18 あなたがたは、『早く主の日がきてくれたら、
神が敵の手から救い出してくださるのに』と言う。
だが自分たちが何を願っているのか、わかっていない。
その日は、光でも希望でもない。
暗闇と絶滅の日だ。
それはなんと恐ろしい闇であろう。
喜びや希望の光などかけらもない。
19 その日あなたがたは、ライオンに追いかけられていて
熊に出会った者のようだ。
あるいは、真っ暗な部屋で壁に寄りかかると、
手が蛇に触れた者のよだ。
20 まさに、あなたがたにとって暗闇と絶望の日だ。
21 あなたがたが祭りと聖なる集会を開いて、
わたしをあがめているふりをするのは、
もうごめんだ。
22 焼き尽くすいけにえも穀物のささげ物も受けたくない。
和解のいけにえも見たくない。
23 賛美歌も歌うな。
わたしの耳には騒音にしか聞こえない。
どんなに甘い響きを奏でても、
あなたがたの音楽は聞きたくない。
24 わたしは、正義が貫かれ、
正しい行いが堂々と通じるのを見たい。
25-27 イスラエルよ。
あなたがたは四十年、荒野にいる間
わたしにいけにえをささげた。
だが、ほんとうの関心はいつも異教の神々にあった。
あなたがたの王サクテや星の神キウン、
自分たちが造った神々の像に。
それゆえ、あなたがたといっしょに、
それらの神々も、ダマスコのはるか東へ捕らえ移そう。」
全能の主が、こう言うのです。
安逸をむさぼる者への警告
6 イスラエルの民の間で有名なエルサレムとサマリヤで、
ぜいたくにのんびり暮らしている者たちは、災いだ。
2 カルネへ行って、そこで起こったことを見なさい。
それから大ハマテへ行き、
ペリシテ人の地にあるガテへも下って行きなさい。
かつてそこは、あなたがたより栄えていました。
しかし、今はどうなっているかを見なさい。
3 あなたがたは、
迫っている罰のことを考えようとしません。
しかし、その行いによって、
さばきの日は近くなっているのです。
4 あなたがたはぜいを尽くした
象牙のベッドに横になって、
柔らかい子羊の肉や最上の子牛の肉を食べています。
5 堅琴に合わせて、むなしい歌を歌い、
ダビデ王のような
偉大な音楽家のつもりになっています。
6 浴びるほどぶどう酒を飲み、
香油を体に塗っても、
助けを求める兄弟たちのことは全く気にしません。
7 そのため、あなたがたが真っ先に
奴隷となって引いて行かれます。
酒盛りは突然終わるのです。
イスラエルの思い上がりに対する主の嫌悪
8 全能の主は、
ご自分の名にかけて誓います。
「わたしはイスラエルの思い上がりと
偽りの栄光をきらい、彼らの美しい宮殿を憎む。
この町とそこにあるすべての物を敵の手に渡す。」
9 一つの氏族で十人が残ったとしても、
彼らもまた死にます。
10 親戚の者が葬ることになり、
死体を家から運び出す時、
家の中に一人だけ生き残っている者に
「ほかに残っている者がいるか」と聞くと、
「いない」という答えが返ってきます。
すると、「しーっ、声を出すな。主の名を口にするな。
おまえの言うことを聞いているかもしれないから」
と言うのです。
11 主がこのように命じたからです。
大きな氏族も小さな氏族も、木っ端みじんになれと。
12 馬は岩の上を走れるでしょうか。
牛は海を耕せるでしょうか。
これは聞くだけ愚かなことだが、
あなたがたのやっていることより
愚かなことはありません。
正義をあざけり、良いこと、正しいことを腐敗させ、
堕落させているではありませんか。
13 また、無に等しい者なのに、
愚かにも、偉い者であるかのように喜びます。
ちっぽけな力を、たいそう自慢しています。
14 全能の主は言います。
「イスラエルよ。
わたしは一つの民を起こして、
あなたがたを攻めさせる。
北の国境から南の端まで、
レボ・ハマテからアラバの川筋までの全域で、
彼らはあなたがたを虐げる。」

Israel Has Not Returned to God
4 Hear this word, you cows of Bashan(A) on Mount Samaria,(B)
you women who oppress the poor(C) and crush the needy(D)
and say to your husbands,(E) “Bring us some drinks!(F)”
2 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness:
“The time(G) will surely come
when you will be taken away(H) with hooks,(I)
the last of you with fishhooks.[a]
3 You will each go straight out
through breaches in the wall,(J)
and you will be cast out toward Harmon,[b]”
declares the Lord.
4 “Go to Bethel(K) and sin;
go to Gilgal(L) and sin yet more.
Bring your sacrifices every morning,(M)
your tithes(N) every three years.[c](O)
5 Burn leavened bread(P) as a thank offering
and brag about your freewill offerings(Q)—
boast about them, you Israelites,
for this is what you love to do,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.
6 “I gave you empty stomachs in every city
and lack of bread in every town,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(R)
7 “I also withheld(S) rain from you
when the harvest was still three months away.
I sent rain on one town,
but withheld it from another.(T)
One field had rain;
another had none and dried up.
8 People staggered from town to town for water(U)
but did not get enough(V) to drink,
yet you have not returned(W) to me,”
declares the Lord.(X)
9 “Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards,
destroying them with blight and mildew.(Y)
Locusts(Z) devoured your fig and olive trees,(AA)
yet you have not returned(AB) to me,”
declares the Lord.
10 “I sent plagues(AC) among you
as I did to Egypt.(AD)
I killed your young men(AE) with the sword,
along with your captured horses.
I filled your nostrils with the stench(AF) of your camps,
yet you have not returned to me,”(AG)
declares the Lord.(AH)
11 “I overthrew some of you
as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.(AI)
You were like a burning stick(AJ) snatched from the fire,
yet you have not returned to me,”
declares the Lord.(AK)
12 “Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel,
and because I will do this to you, Israel,
prepare to meet your God.”
13 He who forms the mountains,(AL)
who creates the wind,(AM)
and who reveals his thoughts(AN) to mankind,
who turns dawn to darkness,
and treads on the heights of the earth(AO)—
the Lord God Almighty is his name.(AP)
A Lament and Call to Repentance
5 Hear this word, Israel, this lament(AQ) I take up concerning you:
2 “Fallen is Virgin(AR) Israel,
never to rise again,
deserted in her own land,
with no one to lift her up.(AS)”
3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:
“Your city that marches out a thousand strong
will have only a hundred left;
your town that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left.(AT)”
4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:
“Seek(AU) me and live;(AV)
5 do not seek Bethel,
do not go to Gilgal,(AW)
do not journey to Beersheba.(AX)
For Gilgal will surely go into exile,
and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.[d](AY)”
6 Seek(AZ) the Lord and live,(BA)
or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire;(BB)
it will devour them,
and Bethel(BC) will have no one to quench it.(BD)
7 There are those who turn justice into bitterness(BE)
and cast righteousness(BF) to the ground.(BG)
8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion,(BH)
who turns midnight into dawn(BI)
and darkens day into night,(BJ)
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land—
the Lord is his name.(BK)
9 With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin.(BL)
10 There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court(BM)
and detest the one who tells the truth.(BN)
11 You levy a straw tax on the poor(BO)
and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,(BP)
you will not live in them;(BQ)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.(BR)
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.(BS)
There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes(BT)
and deprive the poor(BU) of justice in the courts.(BV)
13 Therefore the prudent keep quiet(BW) in such times,
for the times are evil.(BX)
14 Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.(BY)
Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil,(BZ) love good;(CA)
maintain justice in the courts.(CB)
Perhaps(CC) the Lord God Almighty will have mercy(CD)
on the remnant(CE) of Joseph.
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:
“There will be wailing(CF) in all the streets(CG)
and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers(CH) will be summoned to weep
and the mourners to wail.
17 There will be wailing(CI) in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through(CJ) your midst,”
says the Lord.(CK)
The Day of the Lord
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the Lord!(CL)
Why do you long for the day of the Lord?(CM)
That day will be darkness,(CN) not light.(CO)
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,(CP)
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.(CQ)
20 Will not the day of the Lord be darkness,(CR) not light—
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?(CS)
21 “I hate,(CT) I despise your religious festivals;(CU)
your assemblies(CV) are a stench to me.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings(CW) and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.(CX)
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.(CY)
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.(CZ)
24 But let justice(DA) roll on like a river,
righteousness(DB) like a never-failing stream!(DC)
25 “Did you bring me sacrifices(DD) and offerings
forty years(DE) in the wilderness, people of Israel?
26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king,
the pedestal of your idols,(DF)
the star of your god[e]—
which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into exile(DG) beyond Damascus,”
says the Lord, whose name is God Almighty.(DH)
Woe to the Complacent
6 Woe to you(DI) who are complacent(DJ) in Zion,
and to you who feel secure(DK) on Mount Samaria,(DL)
you notable men of the foremost nation,
to whom the people of Israel come!(DM)
2 Go to Kalneh(DN) and look at it;
go from there to great Hamath,(DO)
and then go down to Gath(DP) in Philistia.
Are they better off than(DQ) your two kingdoms?
Is their land larger than yours?
3 You put off the day of disaster
and bring near a reign of terror.(DR)
4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory
and lounge on your couches.(DS)
You dine on choice lambs
and fattened calves.(DT)
5 You strum away on your harps(DU) like David
and improvise on musical instruments.(DV)
6 You drink wine(DW) by the bowlful
and use the finest lotions,
but you do not grieve(DX) over the ruin of Joseph.(DY)
7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile;(DZ)
your feasting and lounging will end.(EA)
The Lord Abhors the Pride of Israel
8 The Sovereign Lord has sworn by himself(EB)—the Lord God Almighty declares:
“I abhor(EC) the pride of Jacob(ED)
and detest his fortresses;(EE)
I will deliver up(EF) the city
and everything in it.(EG)”
9 If ten(EH) people are left in one house, they too will die. 10 And if the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of the house to burn them[f](EI) asks anyone who might be hiding there, “Is anyone else with you?” and he says, “No,” then he will go on to say, “Hush!(EJ) We must not mention the name of the Lord.”
11 For the Lord has given the command,
and he will smash(EK) the great house(EL) into pieces
and the small house into bits.(EM)

ふさわしい牧師を選ぶ

6 牧師として選ぶ人は、正しい生活を送っていて、評判の良い人でなければなりません。すなわち、一人の妻の夫であり、子どもも、主を愛するクリスチャンでなければなりません。子どもが親に反抗的だとか、乱暴者だとか、悪いうわさのある人は避けなさい。 7 牧師は神に仕える者ですから、だれからも非難されない人であるべきです。高慢な人、短気な人、大酒飲み、けんか好き、金銭欲の強い人に、その資格はありません。 8 心から客をもてなし、善意にあふれ、慎み深く、だれにでも公平で、良識ある、きよらかな心の持ち主でなければならないのです。 9 また、教えられたみことばの真理をしっかり守っている人であることも大切な条件です。なぜなら、彼らの使命は人々に真理を教え、反対する者に、その誤りをはっきり指摘することにあるからです。
10 こう言うのは、真理に従わない人が大ぜいいるからです。特に、「クリスチャンはみな、割礼を受けるべきだ」と主張する者たちは、その代表的な例だと言えます。これはまた、なんとばかげた議論でしょう。彼らは人の目をくらませて、真理を見いだすのを阻むのです。 11 そんな議論は直ちにやめさせなさい。それで、すでに何家族かが神の恵みから離れてしまいました。そんなことを教える者たちの目当ては、一にも二にも金もうけです。 12 彼らのことを、同じクレテ出身の預言者はこう言いました。「クレテ人はみな、うそつきで悪いけだもの。なまけ者で食いしんぼう。」 13 まさにそのとおりです。ですから、人々を甘やかさず、その信仰を強めるように、きびしく教育しなさい。 14 そして、ユダヤ人の作り話や、真理に逆らう者の言い分に耳を傾けることなど、きっぱりやめさせなさい。
15 きよい心の持ち主には、すべてのものがきよく、良いものに見えます。しかし、心の曲がった不真実な者には、すべてが曲がって見えるのです。それは、その汚れた思いと反抗的な心が、見るもの聞くものすべてをゆがめるからです。 16 そういう者たちは、口先では神を知っていると言うのですが、行いを見れば、そのうそは一目瞭然です。心は腐れきって不従順で、良い行いにふさわしくない者です。

1 Paul, a servant of God(A) and an apostle(B) of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth(C) that leads to godliness(D)— 2 in the hope of eternal life,(E) which God, who does not lie,(F) promised before the beginning of time,(G) 3 and which now at his appointed season(H) he has brought to light(I) through the preaching entrusted to me(J) by the command of God(K) our Savior,(L)
4 To Titus,(M) my true son(N) in our common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.(O)
Appointing Elders Who Love What Is Good(P)
5 The reason I left you in Crete(Q) was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint[a] elders(R) in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless,(S) faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe[b] and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer(T) manages God’s household,(U) he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.(V) 8 Rather, he must be hospitable,(W) one who loves what is good,(X) who is self-controlled,(Y) upright, holy and disciplined. 9 He must hold firmly(Z) to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine(AA) and refute those who oppose it.
Rebuking Those Who Fail to Do Good
10 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk(AB) and deception, especially those of the circumcision group.(AC) 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households(AD) by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of Crete’s own prophets(AE) has said it: “Cretans(AF) are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.”[c] 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke(AG) them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith(AH) 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths(AI) or to the merely human commands(AJ) of those who reject the truth.(AK) 15 To the pure, all things are pure,(AL) but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure.(AM) In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.(AN) 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him.(AO) They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.(AP)
