Perciò, lasciamo da parte gli insegnamenti elementari! Passiamo invece a cose più profonde, fino a raggiungere lʼinsegnamento perfetto, senza ritornare sui punti fondamentali. Certamente non cʼè bisogno di tirare ancora in ballo che per essere salvati è necessario avere fede in Dio. Non avete neppure bisogno che vi parli ancora del battesimo, dellʼimposizione delle mani, della resurrezione dalla morte o del giudizio eterno.

Se Dio lo permette, ora andremo avanti a parlare di altre cose.

4-5 Se dovessero cadere spiritualmente quelli che una volta hanno capito la Parola di Dio e hanno assaporato il dono celeste, sarebbe impossibile riportarli ad una nuova conversione. Parlo degli stessi che sono diventati partecipi dello Spirito Santo ed hanno conosciuto la dolcezza della Parola di Dio e le meraviglie del mondo futuro. Sì, sarebbe impossibile che si convertissero una seconda volta. In tal caso, crocifiggerebbero unʼaltra volta per conto proprio il Figlio di Dio e lo esporrebbero alla pubblica infamia.

Difatti, una terra che assorbe piogge cadute in abbondanza, produce piante utili a chi la coltiva e riceve benedizioni da Dio. Ma se non dà che spine e rovi, allora non vale niente: sarà maledetta da Dio e finirà per essere bruciata.

Cari fratelli, anche se parlo così, in realtà non credo che ciò che dico si adatti a voi, perché sono convinto che voi vi troviate in una situazione migliore, per quanto riguarda la salvezza. 10 Dio, infatti, non è ingiusto. Come può dimenticare quanto avete lavorato per lui e lʼamore che gli avete dimostrato e che ancora gli dimostrate aiutando i suoi figli? 11 Nondimeno desideriamo che continuiate fino alla fine con lo stesso impegno, in modo che possiate ottenere la vostra piena ricompensa.

12 Allora, sapendo ciò che vi aspetta, non vi stancherete di essere cristiani, né potrete diventare pigri o indifferenti dal punto di vista spirituale, ma farete di tutto per seguire lʼesempio di quelli che ricevono tutto ciò che Dio ha promesso, grazie alla loro grande fede e pazienza.

Lʼesempio dʼAbramo

13 Per esempio, quando Dio fece la sua promessa ad Abramo, siccome non cʼera nessuno più grande di lui per cui giurare, Dio giurò per se stesso. 14 Disse che avrebbe benedetto Abramo molte volte, e gli avrebbe dato un figlio che sarebbe diventato capostipite di una grande nazione. 15 Così Abramo aspettò con pazienza, finché Dio non gli diede un figlio, Isacco, proprio come aveva promesso.

16 Quando si fa un giuramento, di solito lo si fa per qualcuno più importante di chi giura, qualcuno che possa obbligare a rispettare lʼimpegno preso, pena la punizione; così il giuramento serve da garanzia e mette fine ad ogni discussione. 17 Ebbene, anche il Signore si vincolò con un giuramento; lo fece per dare la certezza a quelli che aveva promesso di aiutare che non avrebbe mai cambiato la sua decisione.

18 Il Signore ci diede sia la sua promessa che il suo giuramento, in modo che potessimo contare in pieno su questi due atti irrevocabili, nei quali è impossibile che Dio non sia sincero. E tutti quelli che cercano scampo in Dio per avere la salvezza sono incoraggiati dalla promessa e dal giuramento di Dio: ora possono sapere senza dubbio che egli darà loro la salvezza che ha promesso.

19 Questa sicura speranza di essere salvati è come lʼàncora della nostra anima, è la speranza che ci lega a Dio stesso e penetra al di là delle sacre cortine del cielo, 20 dove Cristo entrò prima di noi ad intercedere per la nostra causa, quando divenne «sommo sacerdote per sempre, secondo lʼordine di Melchisedek».

Therefore let us move beyond(A) the elementary teachings(B) about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death,[a](C) and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites,[b](D) the laying on of hands,(E) the resurrection of the dead,(F) and eternal judgment. And God permitting,(G) we will do so.

It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened,(H) who have tasted the heavenly gift,(I) who have shared in the Holy Spirit,(J) who have tasted the goodness(K) of the word of God(L) and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen[c] away, to be brought back to repentance.(M) To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God(N) all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed.(O) In the end it will be burned.

Even though we speak like this, dear friends,(P) we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.(Q) 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope(R) for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate(S) those who through faith and patience(T) inherit what has been promised.(U)

The Certainty of God’s Promise

13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,(V) 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[d](W) 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.(X)

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(Y) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(Z) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(AA) he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie,(AB) we who have fled to take hold of the hope(AC) set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,(AD) 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.(AE) He has become a high priest(AF) forever, in the order of Melchizedek.(AG)

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

And this will we do, if God permit.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,

And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:

But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end:

12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,

14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.

15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

The Peril of Not Progressing

Therefore, (A)leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to [a]perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from (B)dead works and of faith toward God, (C)of the doctrine of baptisms, (D)of laying on of hands, (E)of resurrection of the dead, (F)and of eternal judgment. And this [b]we will do if God permits.

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted (G)the heavenly gift, and (H)have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, [c]if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, (I)since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame.

For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, (J)receives blessing from God; (K)but if it bears thorns and briers, it is rejected and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.

A Better Estimate

But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 10 For (L)God is not unjust to forget (M)your work and [d]labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have (N)ministered to the saints, and do minister. 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence (O)to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not become [e]sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience (P)inherit the promises.

God’s Infallible Purpose in Christ

13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, (Q)He swore by Himself, 14 saying, (R)“Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the (S)promise. 16 For men indeed swear by the greater, and (T)an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to (U)the heirs of promise (V)the [f]immutability of His counsel, [g]confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two [h]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to (W)lie, we [i]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope (X)set before us.
