11 한 달쯤 뒤에[a] 암몬 사람 나하스가 올라와서 길르앗의 야베스를 에워쌌다. 온 야베스 사람이 나하스에게 “우리와 조약을 맺으면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.”라고 말하였다.
2 그러나 암몬 사람 나하스는 이렇게 대답하였다. “너희와 조약을 맺는 데에는 한 가지 조건이 있다. 그것은 내가 너희 각 사람의 오른쪽 눈을 모조리 뽑아서 온 이스라엘을 모욕하는 것이다.”
3 야베스의 지도자들이 나하스에게 말하였다. “우리에게 이레 동안의 말미를 주십시오. 그러면 우리가 이스라엘 모든 지역에 전령들을 내보내겠습니다. 만약 아무도 우리를 도우러 오지 않으면 그때에 우리가 당신께 나아가 항복하겠습니다.”
사울이 길르앗 야베스를 구하다
4 전령들이 사울이 사는 기브아에 와서 그곳 사람들에게 이 조건을 전하자 사람들은 소리 내어 울었다. 5 바로 그때에 사울은 소를 몰고 밭에서 돌아오고 있었다. 그가 사람들의 울음소리를 듣고 물었다. “사람들에게 무슨 일이 생겼습니까? 저들이 왜 울고 있습니까?” 사람들은 야베스에서 온 전령들이 한 말을 사울에게 일러주었다.
6 사울이 그들의 이야기를 들을 때에 하나님의 영이 크신 능력으로 그에게 내리셨다. 사울은 무섭게 분노를 터뜨렸다.
7 사울은 수소 두 마리를 끌어다가 토막을 내어 자른 다음, 그 토막들을 전령들에게 주어 이스라엘 곳곳에 보내며 이렇게 선포하였다. “누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따르지 않으면 그 사람의 수소도 이와 같이 될 것이다.”
그러자 백성이 주님을 크게 두려워하여 모두 하나같이 달려 나왔다. 8 사울이 그들을 베섹에 모으고 세어보니 이스라엘에서 온 사람이 삼십만 명, 유다에서 온 사람이 삼만 명이었다.
9 그들이[b] 야베스에서 온 전령들에게 말하였다. “길르앗의 야베스 사람들에게 이렇게 전하여라. ‘내일 햇볕이 뜨겁게 내려쬘 때쯤에는 너희가 구출될 것이다.’”
전령들이 가서 야베스 사람들에게 이 말을 전하자 그들은 매우 기뻐하였다. 10 그들은 암몬 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “우리가 내일 당신들에게 항복할 터이니 그때에 당신들은 우리에게 하고 싶은 대로 하시오.”
11 다음날 아침 사울은 병사들을 세 부대로 나눈 다음, 해 뜰 무렵에 암몬 사람들의 진으로 쳐들어가서, 날이 한창 뜨거울 때까지 암몬 사람을 쳐죽였다. 살아남은 암몬 병사들이 뿔뿔이 흩어지니 그들 가운데 두 사람도 함께 있는 경우가 없었다.
12 그러자 백성들이 사무엘에게 말하였다. “‘어떻게 사울이 우리의 왕이 될 수 있느냐?’라고 떠들던 자들이 누구입니까? 그들을 우리에게 끌고 오십시오. 우리가 죽여 버리겠습니다.”
13 그러나 사울은 이렇게 말하였다. “오늘은 아무도 죽여서는 안 됩니다. 오늘은 주께서 이스라엘을 구원하신 날이기 때문입니다.”
14 사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. “우리 모두 길갈로 가서 사울이 우리의 왕이라는 것을 한 번 더 선포하자.”
15 그리하여 모든 백성이 길갈로 가서 거기에 계신 주 앞에서 사울이 왕인 것을 다시 확인하고, 거기에서 주께 친교제물을 드렸다. 사울과 모든 이스라엘 사람이 크게 기뻐하였다.

사울이 야베스성을 구출함
11 그 후에 암몬 사람 나하스가 길르앗의 야베스성을 치기 위해 군대를 이 끌고 와서 포진하자 야베스 사람들은 나하스에게 “우리와 조약을 맺읍시다. 그러면 우리가 당신들의 종이 되겠소” 하였다.
2 그때 나하스는 “좋다. 하지만 한 가지 조건이 있다. 내가 너희 오른눈을 모조리 뽑아 온 이스라엘의 치욕거리로 삼겠다” 하고 대답하였다.
3 그래서 야베스 지도자들은 다시 간청하였다. “우리가 이스라엘 전역에 사자를 보낼 수 있도록 일 주일간만 여유를 주시오. 그래도 우리를 도울 자가 없으면 우리가 당신의 조건에 응하겠소.”
4 사자들이 사울의 고향인 기브아에 달려가서 백성들에게 이 소식을 전하자 모든 사람들이 통곡하기 시작하였다.
5 바로 그때 밭을 갈다가 집에 돌아온 사울은 곳곳에서 들려오는 울음 소리를 듣고 “무슨 일이오? 어째서 모두 이렇게 울고 있소?” 하고 물었다. 그래서 백성들은 그에게 야베스 사람들이 말한 것을 그대로 일러 주었다.
6 사울은 그들의 말을 들을 때에 하나님의 성령에 크게 감동되어 강한 분노를 느꼈다.
7 그래서 그는 소 두 마리를 끌어다가 여러 토막으로 잘라 사자들에게 주면서 이것을 이스라엘 전 지역으로 들고 다니며 이렇게 외치라고 지시하였다. “누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따라 나서지 않는 자는 그의 소들에게도 이렇게 하겠다!” 그러자 백성들은 여호와를 두려워하여 하나같이 달려나왔다.
8 사울이 그들을 베섹에 집결시키고 인원을 점검한 결과 이스라엘 사람이 300,000명이며 유다 사람이 30,000명이었다.
9 그런 다음 사울은 사자들을 길르앗의 야베스로 돌려보내며 “내일 정오까지 우리가 당신들을 구출하겠소” 하였다. 사자들이 돌아가서 이 소식을 전하자 야베스 사람들은 무척 기뻐하였다.
10 그리고 그들은 나하스에게 “항복합니다. 내일 우리가 당신들에게 나갈 테니 당신들이 좋을 대로 하시오” 하였다.
11 다음날 새벽 사울은 병력을 세 부대로 나누고 암몬군을 기습하여 그들을 정오까지 쳐죽였다. 그래서 살아 남은 자들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 단 두 사람도 함께 남은 자가 없었다.
12 그러자 백성들은 “사울이 우리의 왕이 되어서는 안 된다고 말한 자가 누구입니까? 그들을 끌어내십시오. 우리가 죽여 버리겠습니다” 하고 사무엘에게 말하였다.
13 그러나 사울이 그들에게 “오늘은 여호와께서 이스라엘을 구출한 날이므로 아무도 사람을 죽여서는 안 됩니다” 하였다.
14 그때 사무엘이 백성들에게 “자, 우리 모두 길갈로 가서 다시 한번 사울을 우리의 왕으로 선포합시다!” 하고 외치자
15 모든 백성은 길갈로 가 여호와 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 선포하고 그를 왕위에 앉혔다. 그런 다음 그들은 여호와께 화목제를 드리고 사울과 함께 거기서 크게 기뻐하였다.

Victory over the Ammonites. 1 Nahash the Ammonite went up and camped outside of Jabesh-gilead. All of the men in Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us and we will be subject to you.” 2 But Nahash answered, “I will only make a covenant with you if I gouge out your right eyes[b] so that you might bring shame upon all of Israel.” 3 The elders of Jabesh answered, “Give us a reprieve of seven days so that we can send messengers all throughout the territory of Israel. If no one comes to save us, then we will surrender to you.”
4 When the messengers arrived at Gibeah, Saul’s city, and they proclaimed these things in the hearing of the people, all the people cried out and wept. 5 Saul was just then coming back from the field behind his oxen, and asked, “What is wrong that the people are weeping?” So they told him what the men from Jabesh had said.
6 When he heard this report, the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon Saul and he burned with rage.[c] 7 He took a pair of oxen and cut them into pieces. He sent them by messengers all throughout the territory of Israel. He said, “Whoever does not follow Saul and Samuel will have this done to his oxen.” The fear of the Lord came upon the people so that they came out as if they were one man.
8 When Saul counted the Israelites who were in Bezek, there were three hundred thousand of them, and thirty thousand from Judah. 9 They said to the messengers who had come to them, “Say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, before the sun warms up, you will have help.’ ” The messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh who were elated. 10 So the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us what you see fit.”
11 The next day Saul divided his people into three groups. During the morning watch they attacked the camp of the Ammonites and continued to strike them down until the day was hot. Even those who survived were scattered, so that not two of them remained together.
12 Saul Proclaimed King. The people said to Samuel, “Who is it who asked, ‘Is Saul to reign over us?’ Bring those men out so that we can put them to death.” 13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today, for today the Lord delivered Israel.” 14 Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and reaffirm the kingdom there.” 15 All of the people went to Gilgal, and they confirmed Saul as king before the Lord in Gilgal. They sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all of the Israelites greatly rejoiced there.

- 1 Samuel 11:6 Burned with rage: linking the Spirit of the Lord with Saul’s anger confirms that justifiable anger can be used by God to right a wrong, in this case, to overcome those who were persecuting the Israelites.

Saul Rescues the City of Jabesh
11 Nahash[a](A) the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead.(B) And all the men of Jabesh said to him, “Make a treaty(C) with us, and we will be subject to you.”
2 But Nahash the Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you only on the condition(D) that I gouge(E) out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace(F) on all Israel.”
3 The elders(G) of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue(H) us, we will surrender(I) to you.”
4 When the messengers came to Gibeah(J) of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept(K) aloud. 5 Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, “What is wrong with everyone? Why are they weeping?” Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.
6 When Saul heard their words, the Spirit(L) of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger. 7 He took a pair of oxen,(M) cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel,(N) proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone(O) who does not follow Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the Lord fell on the people, and they came out together as one.(P) 8 When Saul mustered(Q) them at Bezek,(R) the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and those of Judah thirty thousand.
9 They told the messengers who had come, “Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be rescued.’” When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated. 10 They said to the Ammonites, “Tomorrow we will surrender(S) to you, and you can do to us whatever you like.”
11 The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions;(T) during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites(U) and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
Saul Confirmed as King
12 The people then said to Samuel, “Who(V) was it that asked, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Turn these men over to us so that we may put them to death.”
13 But Saul said, “No one will be put to death today,(W) for this day the Lord has rescued(X) Israel.”
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal(Y) and there renew the kingship.(Z)” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal(AA) and made Saul king(AB) in the presence of the Lord. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.
