사무엘이 사울에게 기름을 붓다
10 그때 사무엘은 기름병을 가져다가 사울의 머리에 붓고 그의 볼에 입을 맞추며 말하였다. “내가 이렇게 하는 것은 여호와께서 당신을 자기 백성 이스라엘의 왕으로 세우셨기 때문이오.
2 당신은 돌아갈 때 베냐민 땅의 셀사에 있는 라헬의 무덤 곁에서 두 사람을 만날 것이며 그들은 이렇게 말할 것이오. ‘당신이 찾으러 간 나귀들을 찾게 되어 당신의 아버지는 한시름 놓았으나 오히려 당신을 걱정하며 어떻게 하면 당신을 찾겠느냐고 물었습니다.’
3 “그리고 당신이 다볼의 상수리나무에 이르면 하나님께 예배하러 벧엘로 올라가는 세 사람이 맞은편에서 오고 있는 것을 보게 될 것이오. 그들 중 한 사람은 염소 새끼 세 마리를 끌고 올 것이며 또 한 사람은 빵 세 덩이를 가졌고 다른 한 사람은 포도주 한 부대를 가지고 있을 것이오.
4 그들이 당신에게 인사하고 빵 두 덩이를 줄 것이며 당신은 그것을 받게 될 것이오.
5 그 후에 당신은 블레셋군의 주둔지가 있는 [a]‘하나님의 산’ 으로 가게 될 것이오. 당신이 그 곳에 도착하면 산당에서 떼지어 내려오는 예언자들을 만날 것이며 그들은 내려오면서 피리를 불고 북을 치며 수금과 비파를 타면서 예언할 것이오.
6 그때 당신은 여호와의 성령에 완전히 사로잡혀 당신도 그들과 함께 예언하고 변하여 다른 사람이 될 것이오.
7 그때부터 당신은 상황에 따라 행동하시오. 여호와께서 당신과 함께하실 것이오.
8 당신은 먼저 길갈로 내려가서 기다리시오. 7일 후에 내가 그리로 가서 번제와 화목제를 드리겠소. 당신이 할 일에 대해서는 내가 그 곳에 도착해서 일러 주겠소.”
9 사울이 작별 인사를 하고 사무엘을 떠나려고 할 때 하나님이 그에게 새 마음을 주셨으며 또 사무엘이 말한 모든 예언도 그 날 다 이루어졌다.
10 사울과 그의 하인이 하나님의 산에 도착했을 때 예언자들이 나와 사울을 영접하였다. 바로 그때 하나님의 성령이 사울을 강하게 사로잡자 그도 그 예언자들과 함께 예언하기 시작하였다.
11 전에 사울을 알던 사람들은 그가 이렇게 하는 것을 보고 “도대체 기스의 아들에게 무슨 일이 생겼느냐? 사울도 예언자란 말인가?” 하고 외쳤다.
12 또 그 곳에 사는 어떤 사람은 “그의 조상 가운데서도 이처럼 예언을 하는 자가 있었느냐?” 하고 묻기도 하였다. 그래서 여기서부터 “사울도 예언자란 말이냐?” 라는 유행어가 생기게 되었다.
13 사울은 예언하던 것을 그치고 산당으로 올라갔다.
14 사울의 삼촌이 사울과 그 하인을 보고 물었다. “도대체 너희들은 어디 갔었느냐?” “우리는 나귀를 찾으러 갔다가 찾을 수 없어서 예언자 사무엘에게 물어 보려고 갔었습니다.”
15 “그래? 그가 뭐라고 하더냐?”
16 “그가 나귀를 찾았다고 말해 주었습니다.” 그러나 사울은 자기가 왕으로 기름 부음을 받았다는 이야기는 하지 않았다.
사울이 왕으로 선포됨
17 사무엘이 이스라엘 백성을 미스바에 모으고
18 그들에게 여호와의 말씀을 이렇게 전하였다. “내가 너희를 이집트에서 인도해 내어 이집트 사람들과 너희를 괴롭히던 모든 원수들의 손에서 너희를 구해 주었다.
19 그러나 너희는 모든 재난과 고통에서 너희를 구출한 너희 하나님을 저버리고 오히려 ‘우리에게 왕을 세워 주시오!’ 하고 요구하였다. 그러므로 이제 너희는 지파와 집안별로 나 여호와 앞에 나오너라.”
20 그래서 사무엘은 각 지파의 지도자들을 여호와 앞으로 나오게 했는데 그때 베냐민 지파가 뽑혔다.
21 그런 다음 사무엘이 베냐민 지파를 집안별로 여호와 앞에 나오게 하자 이번에는 마드리 집안이 뽑혔다. 마지막으로 마드리 집안이 여호와 앞에 나왔을 때 기스의 아들 사울이 뽑혔으나 그가 자취를 감추고 말았다.
22 그래서 그들이 “그가 어디 있습니까? 그가 우리 가운데 있습니까?” 하고 여호와께 묻자 여호와께서는 “그가 짐꾸러미 사이에 숨어 있다” 하고 대답하셨다.
23 그래서 그들이 달려가서 사울을 데리고 왔는데 그는 키가 커서 다른 사람들이 그의 어깨까지밖에 미치지 못하였다.
24 그때 사무엘이 모든 백성에게 “이분이 여호와께서 왕으로 뽑은 사람입니다. 이스라엘에 이만한 사람이 어디 있겠습니까?” 하자 백성들은 왕의 만세를 외쳐댔다.
25 그때 사무엘은 왕의 권리와 의무가 무엇인지 백성들에게 말하고 그것을 책에 기록하여 여호와 앞에 두고 백성들을 모두 집으로 돌려보냈다.
26 사울이 기브아에 있는 자기 집으로 돌아갈 때 마음에 하나님의 감동을 받은 사람들은 그와 동행하였으나
27 몇몇 불량배들은 “이 사람이 어떻게 우리를 구원하겠느냐?” 하며 그를 무시하고 그에게 아무 선물도 주지 않았다. 그러나 사울은 침묵을 지켰다.

10 Then Samuel took a flask(A) of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed(B) you ruler over his inheritance?[a](C) 2 When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel’s tomb,(D) at Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys(E) you set out to look for have been found. And now your father has stopped thinking about them and is worried(F) about you. He is asking, “What shall I do about my son?”’
3 “Then you will go on from there until you reach the great tree of Tabor. Three men going up to worship God at Bethel(G) will meet you there. One will be carrying three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and another a skin of wine. 4 They will greet you and offer you two loaves of bread,(H) which you will accept from them.
5 “After that you will go to Gibeah(I) of God, where there is a Philistine outpost.(J) As you approach the town, you will meet a procession of prophets(K) coming down from the high place(L) with lyres, timbrels,(M) pipes(N) and harps(O) being played before them, and they will be prophesying.(P) 6 The Spirit(Q) of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them; and you will be changed(R) into a different person. 7 Once these signs are fulfilled, do whatever(S) your hand(T) finds to do, for God is with(U) you.
8 “Go down ahead of me to Gilgal.(V) I will surely come down to you to sacrifice burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, but you must wait seven(W) days until I come to you and tell you what you are to do.”
Saul Made King
9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed(X) Saul’s heart, and all these signs(Y) were fulfilled(Z) that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit(AA) of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying.(AB) 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this(AC) that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AD)
12 A man who lived there answered, “And who is their father?” So it became a saying: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(AE) 13 After Saul stopped prophesying,(AF) he went to the high place.
14 Now Saul’s uncle(AG) asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?”
“Looking for the donkeys,(AH)” he said. “But when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.”
16 Saul replied, “He assured us that the donkeys(AI) had been found.” But he did not tell his uncle what Samuel had said about the kingship.
17 Samuel summoned the people of Israel to the Lord at Mizpah(AJ) 18 and said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the power of Egypt and all the kingdoms that oppressed(AK) you.’ 19 But you have now rejected(AL) your God, who saves(AM) you out of all your disasters and calamities. And you have said, ‘No, appoint a king(AN) over us.’(AO) So now present(AP) yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and clans.”
20 When Samuel had all Israel come forward by tribes, the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought forward the tribe of Benjamin, clan by clan, and Matri’s clan was taken.(AQ) Finally Saul son of Kish was taken. But when they looked for him, he was not to be found. 22 So they inquired(AR) further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?”
And the Lord said, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the supplies.”
23 They ran and brought him out, and as he stood among the people he was a head taller(AS) than any of the others. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?(AT) There is no one like(AU) him among all the people.”
Then the people shouted, “Long live(AV) the king!”
25 Samuel explained(AW) to the people the rights and duties(AX) of kingship.(AY) He wrote them down on a scroll and deposited it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed the people to go to their own homes.
26 Saul also went to his home in Gibeah,(AZ) accompanied by valiant men(BA) whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some scoundrels(BB) said, “How can this fellow save us?” They despised him and brought him no gifts.(BC) But Saul kept silent.

Saul Is Anointed. 1 Samuel took a flask of oil, and he poured it upon his head. He kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you as leader over his inheritance?[a] 2 When you leave me today, you will encounter two men near the Tomb of Rachel on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys that you were looking for have been found. Your father has stopped worrying about the donkeys and has begun to worry about you saying, “What shall I do about my son?” ’
3 “From there you are to continue on until you arrive at the Terebinth of Tabor. Three men who are on their way to God in Bethel will meet you there. One will be bringing three young goats, another three loaves of bread, and the third a bottle of wine. 4 They will greet you and give you two loaves of bread. Take them from them.
Signs and Prophecies. 5 “After that go to Gibeath-elohim where there is a Philistine outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a band of prophets coming down from the high places with lyres, tambourines, flutes, and harps being played before them. They will be prophesying.[b] 6 The Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them, for you will be changed into another person. 7 Once these signs occur, do whatever comes to hand, for God is with you. 8 Precede me to Gilgal, and I will come down to be with you and to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. You are to wait for seven days until I come to you and show you what to do.”
The Signs Fulfilled. 9 When Saul turned around to leave Samuel, God changed his heart. All those signs were fulfilled that day. 10 When they arrived at Gibeah, they were met by a band of prophets. The Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him and he prophesied among them. 11 When all of those who had known him saw him prophesying among the prophets, they said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also one of the prophets?” 12 A man who lived there asked, “Who is their father?” This is why it became a saying, “Is Saul also one of the prophets?”
13 After Saul stopped prophesying, he went up to the high places. 14 Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where have you been?” He answered, “Looking for the donkeys. When we realized that we could not find them, we went to Samuel.” 15 Saul’s uncle said, “Tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 Saul said to his uncle, “He informed us that the donkeys had been found.” He did not tell him about what Samuel had said concerning the kingdom.
17 Saul Is Chosen King.[c] Samuel summoned the people of Israel to Mizpah. 18 He said to the Israelites, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought Israel up from Egypt and delivered them out of the hands of the Egyptians and all of the nations that oppressed you.’ 19 But today you have rejected your God who himself delivers you from all of your adversities and difficulties. You have said to him, ‘Appoint a king over us.’ Now present yourselves before the Lord by tribes and by clans.”
20 When Samuel had all of the tribes of Israel approach him, the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot. 21 Then he had the tribe of Benjamin approach him clan by clan, and the clan of Matri was chosen. Finally Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen. But when they looked for him, he could not be found. 22 They then asked the Lord, “Has the man arrived yet?” The Lord answered, “Yes, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23 They ran and brought him back from there. When he stood among the people he was a head taller than any of them. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see whom the Lord has chosen? There is no one else like him among the people.” All the people cried out, “Long live the king.”
25 Samuel instructed the people concerning the ordinances of the kingdom. He wrote this in a book and placed it before the Lord. Then Samuel dismissed all of the people, each to his own home. 26 Saul also went home to Gibeah, and he was accompanied by a group of brave men whose hearts God had touched.[d] 27 But some sons of Belial said, “How can this one save us?” They held him in contempt and brought him no gifts, but he held his peace.

- 1 Samuel 10:1 The pomp and circumstance associated with the crowning of an Israelite king also included an anointing that proclaimed the king not only ruler but God’s representative as well. This was a reminder to him that his wisdom came from the Holy Spirit and not from himself.
- 1 Samuel 10:5 Samuel’s time saw the formation of guilds of prophets, that is, men dedicated to divine worship, in which they accompanied the rites with chants and music; they worked themselves up to a kind of ecstasy and even delirium (1 Sam 19:20-24).

10 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?
2 When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?
3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:
4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?
13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.
16 And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.
17 And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh;
18 And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:
19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands.
20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
22 Therefore they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.
23 And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the Lord hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.
25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.
26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.
27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.
