발람의 첫 번째 예언
23 발람이 발락에게 말하였다. “나를 위해 이 곳에 제단 일곱 개를 세우고 황소 일곱 마리와 숫양 일곱 마리를 준비하여 주십시오.” 2 발락은 발람이 청한 대로 하였다. 그리고 두 사람이 각 제단 위에서 황소와 숫양을 제물로 드렸다.
3 그러고 나서 발람이 발락에게 말하였다. “내가 어딜 좀 갔다 올 터이니 임금님께서는 제물 곁에 서 계십시오. 어쩌면 주께서 오셔서 저를 만나 주실지 모르겠습니다. 주께서 저에게 보여 주시는 대로 임금님께 다 말씀드리도록 하겠습니다.” 그러고 나서 그는 아무것도 자라지 않는 언덕 꼭대기로 올라갔다.
4 하나님께서 발람을 만나러 오시자 발람이 하나님께 이렇게 말씀드렸다. “제가 제단을 일곱 개 쌓고 각 제단 위에서 황소와 숫양을 제물로 바쳤습니다.”
5 주께서 발람이 할 말을 일러 주시고 명령하셨다. “발락에게 돌아가서 내가 일러 준 말을 그대로 전하여라.”
6 발람이 발락에게 돌아가니 발락은 모압의 높은 관리들과 함께 자기가 바친 제물 곁에 서 있었다. 7 그러자 발람이 이렇게 말하였다.
“발락이 나를 아람에서 데려왔다.
모압의 왕이 나를 동쪽 산골에서 데려왔다.
발락이 내게 말하기를
‘오셔서 나를 위해 야곱[a]에게 저주를 빌어 주십시오.
오셔서 이스라엘에게 악담을 퍼부어 주십시오.’ 하였다.
8 그러나 하나님께서 저주하시지 않은 사람들을 내가 어찌 저주하며
주께서 꾸짖지 않으시는 사람들을 내가 어찌 꾸짖을 수 있겠느냐?
9 내가 바위투성이 산꼭대기에서
높은 언덕 위에서
그들을 내려다보니
그들은 따로 사는 민족이라
스스로를 여느 민족들 가운데 하나로 여기지 않는다.
10 티끌처럼 많은 야곱의 자손을 누가 헤아릴 수 있으며
이스라엘의 사분의 일이라도 셀 수 있는 자 누구이겠느냐?
나도 의로운 사람이 죽듯이 죽어
나의 마지막이 의로운 사람의 마지막과 같을 수 있다면 참 좋겠구나.”
11 발락이 발람에게 따졌다. “지금 무슨 짓을 하고 있습니까? 나는 당신을 내 원수들에게 저주를 빌어 달라고 불러 왔습니다. 그런데 당신은 지금 그들에게 복만 빌어 주고 있습니다.”
12 발람이 대답하였다. “나는 주께서 내게 일러주신 것만 말해야 하지 않겠습니까?”
13 그러자 발락이 발람에게 말하였다. “나와 함께 다른 곳으로 가 봅시다. 그곳에 가면 이스라엘 자손이 다는 아니더라도 일부는 보일 것입니다. 거기서 나를 위해 그들에게 저주를 빌어 주십시오.” 14 발락이 발람을 데리고 비스가 산꼭대기에 있는 ‘파수꾼의 언덕’으로 갔다. 그곳에서도 제단 일곱 개를 세우고 각 제단 위에 황소 한 마리와 숫양 한 마리씩을 제물로 드렸다.
15 발람이 발락에게 말하였다. “내가 저 쪽으로 가서 주님을 만나고 올 동안 임금님께서는 제물 곁에 서 계십시오.”
16 주께서 발람을 만나러 오셔서 그에게 할 말을 일러 주시고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “발락에게 가서 이 말을 전하여라.”
17 발람이 발락에게 돌아가니 발락은 모압의 높은 관리들과 함께 자기가 바친 제물 곁에 서 있었다. 발락이 그에게 물었다. “하나님께서 무어라 말씀하셨습니까?”
발람의 두 번째 예언
18 그러자 발람이 이렇게 말하였다.
“발락이여, 일어나 들으라.
십볼의 아들이여, 내 말을 들으라.
19 하나님은 사람과 달라 거짓말하지 않으신다.
사람의 아들이 아니시기에 이랬다저랬다 마음을 바꾸지 않으신다.
한 번 말씀하시면 그대로 하시고
약속하신 것은 반드시 지키신다.
20 나는 그들에게 복을 빌라는 명령을 받았다.
그분께서 복을 베푸셨으니
내 어찌 그것을 저주로 바꿀 수 있겠느냐?
21 야곱에게서는 어떤 불운도 보이지 않으며
이스라엘에게서는 어떤 불행도 찾아볼 수 없다.
주 그들의 하나님께서 그들과 함께 하시며
그분을 왕으로 떠받드는 소리가 그들 가운데서 들려온다.
22 하나님께서 그들을 이집트에서 이끌어 내셨고
그분은 들소처럼 강하시다.
23 야곱에 맞설 마술도 없고
이스라엘에 맞설 점도 없다.
이제 야곱과 이스라엘을 두고는
‘하나님께서 하신 일을 보라.’라고 말할 뿐이다.
24 그 백성이 암사자같이 일어난다.
그들은 제가 사냥한 먹이를 다 먹을 때까지
제가 잡은 짐승들의 피를 다 마실 때까지
결코 눕지 않는 수사자처럼 우뚝 설 것이다.”
25 그러자 발락이 발람에게 말하였다. “그들에게 저주를 빌지 않을 바에는 복도 빌지 마십시오.”
26 발람이 대답하였다. “나는 주께서 무슨 말씀을 이르시든지 그 말씀을 전해야 한다고 이미 말하지 않았습니까?”
27 그러자 발락이 발람에게 말하였다. “이리 오십시오. 내가 당신을 다른 곳으로 데리고 가겠습니다. 어쩌면 그곳에서는 하나님께서 당신이 나를 위해 그들을 저주하는 것을 좋게 여기실지도 모릅니다.” 28 발락은 발람을 데리고 광야가 내려다보이는 브올 산꼭대기로 올라갔다.
29 발람이 말하였다. “나를 위해 여기에 제단 일곱 개를 세우고 황소 일곱 마리와 숫양 일곱 마리를 준비해 주십시오.” 30 발락이 발람이 청한 대로 준비하여 각 제단 위에서 황소 한 마리와 숫양 한 마리씩을 제물로 드렸다.

2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram.
3 And Balaam said unto Balak, Stand by thy burnt offering, and I will go: peradventure the Lord will come to meet me: and whatsoever he sheweth me I will tell thee. And he went to an high place.
4 And God met Balaam: and he said unto him, I have prepared seven altars, and I have offered upon every altar a bullock and a ram.
5 And the Lord put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said, Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.
6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt sacrifice, he, and all the princes of Moab.
7 And he took up his parable, and said, Balak the king of Moab hath brought me from Aram, out of the mountains of the east, saying, Come, curse me Jacob, and come, defy Israel.
8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? or how shall I defy, whom the Lord hath not defied?
9 For from the top of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him: lo, the people shall dwell alone, and shall not be reckoned among the nations.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!
11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.
12 And he answered and said, Must I not take heed to speak that which the Lord hath put in my mouth?
13 And Balak said unto him, Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them: thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all: and curse me them from thence.
14 And he brought him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.
15 And he said unto Balak, Stand here by thy burnt offering, while I meet the Lord yonder.
16 And the Lord met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said, Go again unto Balak, and say thus.
17 And when he came to him, behold, he stood by his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him, What hath the Lord spoken?
18 And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
20 Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.
21 He hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob, neither hath he seen perverseness in Israel: the Lord his God is with him, and the shout of a king is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn.
23 Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!
24 Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion: he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.
25 And Balak said unto Balaam, Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.
26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak, Told not I thee, saying, All that the Lord speaketh, that I must do?
27 And Balak said unto Balaam, Come, I pray thee, I will bring thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.
28 And Balak brought Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looketh toward jeshimon.
29 And Balaam said unto Balak, Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.
30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bullock and a ram on every altar.

Balaam’s First Message
23 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams(A) for me.” 2 Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(B)
3 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.(C) Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.
4 God met with him,(D) and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”
5 The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth(E) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”(F)
6 So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.(G) 7 Then Balaam(H) spoke his message:(I)
“Balak brought me from Aram,(J)
the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.(K)
‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel.’(L)
8 How can I curse
those whom God has not cursed?(M)
How can I denounce
those whom the Lord has not denounced?(N)
9 From the rocky peaks I see them,
from the heights I view them.(O)
I see a people who live apart
and do not consider themselves one of the nations.(P)
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob(Q)
or number even a fourth of Israel?
Let me die the death of the righteous,(R)
and may my final end be like theirs!(S)”
11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(T) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(U)
12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(V)
Balaam’s Second Message
13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(W) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(X) And from there, curse them for me.(Y)” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(Z) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(AA)
15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”
16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(AB) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”
17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(AC) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”
18 Then he spoke his message:(AD)
“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.(AE)
19 God is not human,(AF) that he should lie,(AG)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(AH)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(AI) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(AJ)
he has blessed,(AK) and I cannot change it.(AL)
21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(AM)
no misery observed[a] in Israel.(AN)
The Lord their God is with them;(AO)
the shout of the King(AP) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(AQ)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(AR)
23 There is no divination against[b] Jacob,
no evil omens(AS) against[c] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(AT)
they rouse themselves like a lion(AU)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(AV) of its victims.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”
26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(AW)
Balaam’s Third Message
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place.(AX) Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me(AY) from there.” 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,(AZ) overlooking the wasteland.
29 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(BA)

4 And God met with Balaam, and he said to him, “I have arranged seven altars, and I have offered a bull and a ram on the altar.” 5 Yahweh put a word in the mouth of Balaam and said, “Return to Balak, and you must speak thus.” 6 So he returned to him, and behold, he was standing beside his burnt offering, he and all the leaders of Moab. 7 And he lifted up his oracle and said,
“From Aram Balak lead me,
from the mountains of the east the king of Moab,
‘Go for me, curse Jacob,
and go, denounce Israel.’
8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed,
and how can I denounce whom Yahweh has not denounced?
9 Because from the top of the rocks I see him,
from hilltops I watch him.
Behold, a people who dwell alone,
they do not consider themselves among the nations.
10 Who can count the dust of Jacob,
or as a number the fourth part of Israel?
Let my life die the death of an upright person,
and let my end be like his!”
11 And Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse my enemies, and look, you have surely blessed them!” 12 He answered and said, “Should I not speak[a] what Yahweh puts in my mouth?”
13 Then Balak said, “Please walk with me to another place where you will see them, but you will only see part of them and will not see all of them; and curse them for me from there.” 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim to the top of Pisgah, and he built seven altars, and he offered a bull and a ram on each altar. 15 Balaam[b] said to Balak, “Station yourself here at the burnt offering while I myself meet with Yahweh there.” 16 Then Yahweh met with Balaam, and he put a word in his mouth, and he said, “Return to Balak, and you must speak thus.” 17 He came to him, and behold, he was standing at his burnt offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, “What has Yahweh spoken?” 18 Then he uttered[c] his oracle, and said,
“Stand up, Balak, and hear;
listen to me, son of Zippor!
19 God is not a man, that he should lie,
nor a son of humankind,
that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
And has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
20 Behold, I have received a command to bless;
when he has blessed, I cannot cause it to return.
21 He has no regard for evil in Jacob,
and he does not see trouble in Israel;
Yahweh his God is with him,
and a shout[d] of a king is among them.[e]
22 God, who brings them out from Egypt,
is like the strength[f] of a wild ox for them.[g]
23 Because there is no sorcery against Jacob,
and there is no divination against Israel.
Now[h] it will be said to Jacob and Israel,
what God has done!
24 Look! the people will rise like the lion;
he raises himself and will not lie down
until he eats the prey
and drinks the blood of the slain.”
25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them[i] at all, nor bless them[j] at all!” 26 But Balaam answered and said to Balak, “Did I not speak to you, saying, ‘Whatever Yahweh speaks I will do’?”
27 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Please, come, I will take you to another place; perhaps it will be acceptable to[k] God, and you will curse for me from there.” 28 So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which looks down on the face of the Jeshimon.[l] 29 And Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me these seven altars, and prepare for me these seven bulls and seven rams.” 30 Balak did just as Balaam said, and he offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
