犹大的下场
27 到了清晨，众祭司长和民间的长老商定要处死耶稣。 2 他们把祂绑起来，押送到总督彼拉多那里。
3 出卖耶稣的犹大看见耶稣被定了罪，感到很后悔，就把那三十块银子还给祭司长和长老，说： 4 “我出卖了清白无辜的人，我犯罪了！”
他们说：“那是你自己的事，跟我们有什么关系？”
5 犹大把钱扔在圣殿里，出去上吊自尽了。
6 祭司长们捡起银子，说：“这是血钱，不可收进圣殿的库房。” 7 他们商议，决定用这些钱买下陶匠的地作为埋葬异乡人的坟场。 8 那块地至今被称为“血田”。 9 这就应验了耶利米先知的话：“他们用以色列人给祂估定的三十块银子， 10 买了陶匠的一块田，正如主指示我的。”
耶稣在彼拉多面前受审
11 耶稣站在总督面前受审。总督问：“你是犹太人的王吗？”
耶稣说：“如你所言。”
12 当祭司长和长老控告祂时，祂一句话也不说。 13 彼拉多就问：“你没听见他们对你的诸多控告吗？” 14 耶稣仍然一言不发，彼拉多感到十分惊奇。
15 每逢逾越节，总督会照惯例按民众的选择释放一个犯人。 16 那时，有一个恶名昭彰的囚犯名叫巴拉巴。 17 百姓聚在一起的时候，彼拉多就问他们：“你们要我给你们释放谁？巴拉巴还是被称为基督的耶稣？” 18 因为彼拉多知道他们把耶稣抓来是因为嫉妒。
19 彼拉多正坐堂断案时，他夫人派人来对他说：“你不要插手这个义人的事！我今天在梦中因为这个人受了许多苦。”
20 祭司长和长老却怂恿百姓要求释放巴拉巴，处死耶稣。 21 总督再次问百姓：“这两个人，你们要我释放哪一个？”他们说：“巴拉巴！”
22 彼拉多问：“那么，我怎样处置那个被称为基督的耶稣呢？”

24 彼拉多见再说也无济于事，反而会引起骚乱，于是拿了一盆水来，在众人面前洗手，说：“流这义人的血，罪不在我，你们自己负责。”
25 众人都说：“流祂血的责任由我们和我们的子孙承担！”
26 于是，彼拉多为他们释放了巴拉巴，下令将耶稣鞭打后，带出去钉十字架。
耶稣受辱
27 士兵把耶稣押进总督府，叫全营的士兵都聚集在祂周围。 28 他们剥下耶稣的衣服，替祂披上一件朱红色的长袍， 29 用荆棘编成冠冕，戴在祂头上，又拿一根苇秆放在祂右手里，跪在祂跟前戏弄祂，说：“犹太人的王万岁！” 30 然后向祂吐唾沫，拿过苇秆打祂的头。 31 他们戏弄完了，就脱去祂的袍子，给祂穿上原来的衣服，把祂押出去钉十字架。
钉十字架
32 路上，他们遇见一个叫西门的古利奈人，就强迫他背耶稣的十字架。
33 来到一个地方，名叫各各他——意思是“髑髅地”， 34 士兵给耶稣喝掺了苦胆汁的酒，祂尝了一口，不肯喝。
35 他们把耶稣钉在十字架上，还抽签分了祂的衣服， 36 然后坐在那里看守。 37 他们在祂头顶上挂了一个牌子，上面写着祂的罪状：“这是犹太人的王耶稣”。 38 有两个强盗也被钉在十字架上，一个在祂右边，一个在祂左边。 39 过路的人都嘲笑祂，摇着头说： 40 “你这声称把圣殿拆毁又在三天内重建的人啊，救救自己吧！你要是上帝的儿子，就从十字架上下来吧！”
41 祭司长、律法教师和长老也嘲讽说： 42 “祂救了别人，却救不了自己！祂要是以色列的王，就从十字架上跳下来吧！我们就信祂。 43 祂说信靠上帝，如果上帝喜悦祂，就让上帝来救祂吧！因为祂自称是上帝的儿子。” 44 甚至跟祂一同被钉十字架的强盗也这样嘲笑祂。
耶稣之死
45 从正午一直到下午三点，黑暗笼罩着整个大地。 46 大约下午三点，耶稣大声呼喊：“以利，以利，拉马撒巴各大尼？”意思是：“我的上帝，我的上帝，你为什么离弃我？”
47 有些站在旁边的人听见了，就说：“这人在呼叫以利亚呢。” 48 其中一人连忙跑去拿了一块海绵，蘸满酸酒，绑在苇秆上送给祂喝。 49 其他人却说：“等一下！我们看看以利亚会不会来救祂。”
50 耶稣又大喊了一声，就断了气。
51 就在那时，圣殿里的幔子从上到下裂成两半，大地震动，岩石崩裂， 52 坟墓打开，很多死去的圣徒复活过来。 53 他们在耶稣复活后离开坟墓，进圣城向许多人显现。
54 看守耶稣的百夫长和士兵看见地震及所发生的一切，都很害怕，说：“这人真是上帝的儿子啊！” 55 有好些妇女在远处观看，她们从加利利就跟随了耶稣，服侍祂。 56 其中有抹大拉的玛丽亚、雅各和约西的母亲玛丽亚以及西庇太两个儿子的母亲。
封石守墓
57 傍晚，从亚利马太来了一位名叫约瑟的富人，他是耶稣的门徒。 58 他去求见彼拉多，要求领取耶稣的遗体，彼拉多就下令把耶稣的遗体交给他。 59 约瑟领了遗体，用干净的细麻布裹好， 60 安放在他为自己在岩壁上凿出的新墓穴里，并滚来一块大石头封闭墓穴的入口，然后离去。 61 那时，抹大拉的玛丽亚和另一个玛丽亚坐在坟墓的对面。

Judas se ahorca
27 Muy de mañana, todos los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo tomaron la decisión de condenar a muerte a Jesús. 2 Lo ataron, se lo llevaron y lo entregaron a Pilato, el gobernador.
3 Cuando Judas, el que lo había traicionado, vio que habían condenado a Jesús, sintió remordimiento y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los ancianos.
4 ―He pecado —les dijo— porque he entregado sangre inocente.
―¿Y eso a nosotros qué nos importa? —respondieron—. ¡Allá tú!
5 Entonces Judas arrojó el dinero en el santuario y salió de allí. Luego fue y se ahorcó.
6 Los jefes de los sacerdotes recogieron las monedas y dijeron: «La ley no permite echar esto al tesoro, porque es precio de sangre». 7 Así que resolvieron comprar con ese dinero un terreno conocido como Campo del Alfarero, para sepultar allí a los extranjeros. 8 Por eso se le ha llamado Campo de Sangre hasta el día de hoy. 9 Así se cumplió lo dicho por el profeta Jeremías: «Tomaron las treinta monedas de plata, el precio que el pueblo de Israel le había fijado, 10 y con ellas compraron el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor».[a]
Jesús ante Pilato(A)
11 Mientras tanto, Jesús compareció ante el gobernador, y este le preguntó:
―¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?
―Tú lo dices —respondió Jesús.
12 Al ser acusado por los jefes de los sacerdotes y por los ancianos, Jesús no contestó nada.
13 ―¿No oyes lo que declaran contra ti? —le dijo Pilato.
14 Pero Jesús no respondió ni a una sola acusación, por lo que el gobernador se llenó de asombro.
15 Ahora bien, durante la fiesta el gobernador acostumbraba soltar un preso que la gente escogiera. 16 Tenían un preso famoso llamado Barrabás. 17-18 Así que, cuando se reunió la multitud, Pilato, que sabía que le habían entregado a Jesús por envidia, les preguntó:
―¿A quién queréis que os suelte: a Barrabás o a Jesús, al que llaman Cristo?
19 Mientras Pilato estaba sentado en el tribunal, su esposa le envió el siguiente recado: «No te metas con ese justo, pues, por causa de él, hoy he sufrido mucho en un sueño».
20 Pero los jefes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a la multitud a que le pidiera a Pilato soltar a Barrabás y ejecutar a Jesús.
21 ―¿A cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte? —preguntó el gobernador.
―A Barrabás.
22 ―¿Y qué voy a hacer con Jesús, al que llaman Cristo?
―¡Crucifícalo! —respondieron todos.
23 ―¿Por qué? ¿Qué crimen ha cometido?

―¡Crucifícalo!
24 Cuando Pilato vio que no conseguía nada, sino que más bien se estaba formando un tumulto, pidió agua y se lavó las manos delante de la gente.
―Soy inocente de la sangre de este hombre —dijo—. ¡Allá vosotros!
25 ―¡Que su sangre caiga sobre nosotros y sobre nuestros hijos! —contestó todo el pueblo.
26 Entonces les soltó a Barrabás; pero a Jesús lo mandó azotar, y lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús(B)
27 Los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al palacio[b] y reunieron a toda la tropa alrededor de él. 28 Le quitaron la ropa y le pusieron un manto de color escarlata. 29 Luego trenzaron una corona de espinas y se la colocaron en la cabeza, y en la mano derecha le pusieron una caña. Arrodillándose delante de él, se burlaban diciendo:
―¡Salve, rey de los judíos!
30 Y le escupían, y con la caña le golpeaban la cabeza. 31 Después de burlarse de él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron su propia ropa y se lo llevaron para crucificarlo.
La crucifixión(C)
32 Al salir encontraron a un hombre de Cirene que se llamaba Simón, y lo obligaron a llevar la cruz. 33 Llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota (que significa «Lugar de la Calavera»). 34 Allí dieron a Jesús vino mezclado con hiel; pero, después de probarlo, se negó a beberlo. 35 Lo crucificaron y repartieron su ropa echando suertes.[c] 36 Y se sentaron a vigilarlo. 37 Encima de su cabeza pusieron por escrito la causa de su condena: «Este es Jesús, el Rey de los judíos». 38 Con él crucificaron a dos bandidos,[d] uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. 39 Los que pasaban meneaban la cabeza y blasfemaban contra él:
40 ―Tú, que destruyes el templo y en tres días lo reconstruyes, ¡sálvate a ti mismo! ¡Si eres el Hijo de Dios, baja de la cruz!
41 De la misma manera se burlaban de él los jefes de los sacerdotes, junto con los maestros de la ley y los ancianos.
42 ―Salvó a otros —decían—, ¡pero no puede salvarse a sí mismo! ¡Y es el Rey de Israel! Que baje ahora de la cruz, y así creeremos en él. 43 Él confía en Dios; pues que lo libre Dios ahora, si de veras lo quiere. ¿Acaso no dijo: “Yo soy el Hijo de Dios”?
44 Así también lo insultaban los bandidos que estaban crucificados con él.
Muerte de Jesús(D)
45 Desde el mediodía y hasta la media tarde[e] toda la tierra quedó en oscuridad. 46 Como a las tres de la tarde,[f] Jesús gritó con fuerza:
―Elí, Elí,[g] ¿lama sabactani? (que significa: “Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?”).[h]
47 Cuando lo oyeron, algunos de los que estaban allí dijeron:
―Está llamando a Elías.
48 Al instante, uno de ellos corrió en busca de una esponja. La empapó en vinagre, la puso en una caña y se la ofreció a Jesús para que bebiera. 49 Los demás decían:
―Déjalo, a ver si viene Elías a salvarlo.
50 Entonces Jesús volvió a gritar con fuerza, y entregó su espíritu.
51 En ese momento, la cortina del santuario del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo. La tierra tembló y se partieron las rocas. 52 Se abrieron los sepulcros, y muchos santos que habían muerto resucitaron. 53 Salieron de los sepulcros y, después de la resurrección de Jesús, entraron en la ciudad santa y se aparecieron a muchos.
54 Cuando el centurión y los que con él estaban custodiando a Jesús vieron el terremoto y todo lo que había sucedido, quedaron aterrados y exclamaron:
―¡Verdaderamente este era el Hijo[i] de Dios!
55 Estaban allí, mirando de lejos, muchas mujeres que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle. 56 Entre ellas se encontraban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.

57 Al atardecer, llegó un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, que también se había convertido en discípulo de Jesús. 58 Se presentó ante Pilato para pedirle el cuerpo de Jesús, y Pilato ordenó que se lo dieran. 59 José tomó el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia 60 y lo puso en un sepulcro nuevo de su propiedad que había cavado en la roca. Luego hizo rodar una piedra grande a la entrada del sepulcro, y se fue. 61 Allí estaban, sentadas frente al sepulcro, María Magdalena y la otra María.
La guardia ante el sepulcro
62 Al día siguiente, después del día de la preparación, los jefes de los sacerdotes y los fariseos se presentaron ante Pilato.
63 ―Señor —dijeron—, nosotros recordamos que mientras ese engañador aún vivía dijo: “A los tres días resucitaré”. 64 Por eso, ordena que se selle el sepulcro hasta el tercer día, no sea que vengan sus discípulos, roben el cuerpo y digan al pueblo que ha resucitado. Ese último engaño sería peor que el primero.
65 ―Llevaos una guardia de soldados —les ordenó Pilato—, e id a asegurar el sepulcro lo mejor que podáis.
66 Así que ellos fueron, cerraron el sepulcro con una piedra y lo sellaron; y dejaron puesta la guardia.

Jesus before Pilate
27 Early in the morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people reached the decision to have Jesus put to death. 2 They bound him, led him away, and turned him over to Pilate the governor.
Judas’ death
3 When Judas, who betrayed Jesus, saw that Jesus was condemned to die, he felt deep regret. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, and 4 said, “I did wrong because I betrayed an innocent man.”
But they said, “What is that to us? That’s your problem.” 5 Judas threw the silver pieces into the temple and left. Then he went and hanged himself.
6 The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, “According to the Law it’s not right to put this money in the treasury. Since it was used to pay for someone’s life, it’s unclean.” 7 So they decided to use it to buy the potter’s field where strangers could be buried. 8 That’s why that field is called “Field of Blood” to this very day. 9 This fulfilled the words of Jeremiah the prophet: And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price for the one whose price had been set by some of the Israelites, 10 and I gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.[a]
Questioned by Pilate
11 Jesus was brought before the governor. The governor said, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
Jesus replied, “That’s what you say.” 12 But he didn’t answer when the chief priests and elders accused him.
13 Then Pilate said, “Don’t you hear the testimony they bring against you?” 14 But he didn’t answer, not even a single word. So the governor was greatly amazed.
Death sentence
15 It was customary during the festival for the governor to release to the crowd one prisoner, whomever they might choose. 16 At that time there was a well-known prisoner named Jesus Barabbas. 17 When the crowd had come together, Pilate asked them, “Whom would you like me to release to you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 He knew that the leaders of the people had handed him over because of jealousy.
19 While he was serving as judge, his wife sent this message to him, “Leave that righteous man alone. I’ve suffered much today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and kill Jesus. 21 The governor said, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”
“Barabbas,” they replied.
22 Pilate said, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”
They all said, “Crucify him!”
23 But he said, “Why? What wrong has he done?”
They shouted even louder, “Crucify him!”
24 Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere and that a riot was starting. So he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I’m innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It’s your problem.”
25 All the people replied, “Let his blood be on us and on our children.” 26 Then he released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus whipped, then handed him over to be crucified.
Soldiers mocking Jesus
27 The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s house, and they gathered the whole company[b] of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a red military coat on him. 29 They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They put a stick in his right hand. Then they bowed down in front of him and mocked him, saying, “Hey! King of the Jews!” 30 After they spit on him, they took the stick and struck his head again and again. 31 When they finished mocking him, they stripped him of the military coat and put his own clothes back on him. They led him away to crucify him.
Crucifixion
32 As they were going out, they found Simon, a man from Cyrene. They forced him to carry his cross. 33 When they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Skull Place, 34 they gave Jesus wine mixed with vinegar to drink. But after tasting it, he didn’t want to drink it. 35 After they crucified him, they divided up his clothes among them by drawing lots. 36 They sat there, guarding him. 37 They placed above his head the charge against him. It read, “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.” 38 They crucified with him two outlaws, one on his right side and one on his left.
39 Those who were walking by insulted Jesus, shaking their heads 40 and saying, “So you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, were you? Save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross.”
41 In the same way, the chief priests, along with the legal experts and the elders, were making fun of him, saying, 42 “He saved others, but he can’t save himself. He’s the king of Israel, so let him come down from the cross now. Then we’ll believe in him. 43 He trusts in God, so let God deliver him now if he wants to. He said, ‘I’m God’s Son.’” 44 The outlaws who were crucified with him insulted him in the same way.
Death
45 From noon until three in the afternoon the whole earth was dark. 46 At about three Jesus cried out with a loud shout, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani,” which means, “My God, my God, why have you left me?”[c]
47 After hearing him, some standing there said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48 One of them ran over, took a sponge full of vinegar, and put it on a pole. He offered it to Jesus to drink.
49 But the rest of them said, “Let’s see if Elijah will come and save him.”
50 Again Jesus cried out with a loud shout. Then he died.
51 Look, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split, 52 and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised. 53 After Jesus’ resurrection they came out of their graves and went into the holy city where they appeared to many people. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what had just happened, they were filled with awe and said, “This was certainly God’s Son.”
55 Many women were watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to serve him. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Burial
57 That evening a man named Joseph came. He was a rich man from Arimathea who had become a disciple of Jesus. 58 He came to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Pilate gave him permission to take it. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had carved out of the rock. After he rolled a large stone at the door of the tomb, he went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting in front of the tomb.
Guard at the tomb
62 The next day, which was the day after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate. 63 They said, “Sir, we remember that while that deceiver was still alive he said, ‘After three days I will arise.’ 64 Therefore, order the grave to be sealed until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people, ‘He’s been raised from the dead.’ This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate replied, “You have soldiers for guard duty. Go and make it as secure as you know how.” 66 Then they went and secured the tomb by sealing the stone and posting the guard.

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)

11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
