Matthew 27:32-66
New International Version

The Crucifixion of Jesus(A)

32 As they were going out,(B) they met a man from Cyrene,(C) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(D) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(E) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(F) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(G) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(H) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(I) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(J) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(K) save yourself!(L) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(M) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(N) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(O) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(P) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(Q)

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(R) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[a] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b](S)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(T) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(U)

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(V) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(W) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[c] went into the holy city(X) and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(Y) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(Z)

55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(AA) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[d] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(AB)

The Burial of Jesus(AC)

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(AD) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(AE) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(AF) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 “Take a guard,”(AG) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(AH) on the stone(AI) and posting the guard.(AJ)

They compelled this man to (C)carry his cross. 33 (D)And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 (E)they offered him wine to drink, mixed with (F)gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, (G)they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and (H)kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, (I)the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two (J)robbers were crucified with him, (K)one on the right and one on the left. 39 And (L)those who passed by (M)derided him, (N)wagging their heads 40 and saying, (O)“You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! The Death of Jesus

45 Now from the sixth hour[a] there was darkness over all the land[b] until the ninth hour.[c] 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus (W)cried out with a loud voice, saying, (X)“Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with (Y)sour wine, and put it on a reed and (Z)gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus (AA)cried out again with a loud voice and (AB)yielded up his spirit.

51 And behold, (AC)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And (AD)the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of (AE)the saints (AF)who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into (AG)the holy city and appeared to many. 54 (AH)When the centurion and those who were with him, (AI)keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, (AJ)“Truly this was the Son[d] of God!”

55 There were also (AK)many women there, looking on (AL)from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, (AM)ministering to him, 56 among whom were (AN)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and (AO)the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Jesus Is Buried

57 (AP)When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and (AQ)laid it in his own new tomb, (AR)which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled (AS)a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and (AT)the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, that is, after the day of (AU)Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how (AV)that impostor said, while he was still alive, (AW)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, (AX)lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have (AY)a guard[e] of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by (AZ)sealing the stone and setting a guard.

The King on a Cross(A)

32 (B)Now as they came out, (C)they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 (D)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 (E)they gave Him [a]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.

35 (F)Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, [b]that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:

(G)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”

36 (H)Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. 37 And they (I)put up over His head the accusation written against Him:

THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

38 (J)Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.

39 And (K)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, (L)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! (M)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the [c]scribes and elders, said, 42 “He (N)saved others; Himself He cannot save. [d]If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe [e]Him. 43 (O)He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

44 (P)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

Jesus Dies on the Cross(Q)

49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

50 And Jesus (V)cried out again with a loud voice, and (W)yielded up His spirit.

51 Then, behold, (X)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

54 (Y)So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, (Z)“Truly this was the Son of God!”

55 And many women (AA)who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 (AB)among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and [f]Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(AC)

57 Now (AD)when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and (AE)laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting [g]opposite the tomb.

Pilate Sets a Guard

62 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, (AF)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come [h]by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, (AG)sealing the stone and setting the guard.

32 As they were leaving, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry Jesus’[a] cross. 33 When they came to a place called Golgotha (which means “Skull Place”), 34 they offered him a drink of wine mixed with gall. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it. 35 After they had crucified him, they determined who would get his clothes by throwing dice for them.[b] 36 Then they sat down there and continued guarding him. 37 Above his head they placed the charge against him. It read, “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”

38 At that time two bandits[c] were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left. 39 Those who passed by kept insulting[d] him, shaking their heads, 40 and saying, “You who were going to destroy the sanctuary and rebuild it in three days—save yourself! If you’re the Son of God, come down from the cross!”

41 In the same way the high priests, along with the scribes and elders, were also making fun of him. They kept saying, 42 “He saved others but can’t save himself! He is the king of Israel. Let him[e] come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God[f] rescue him, if he wants to do so now. After all, he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

44 In a similar way, the bandits[g] who were being crucified with him kept insulting him.

Jesus Dies on the Cross(B)

Jesus is Buried(C)

His name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be done. 59 So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 Then he placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of the rock. After rolling a large stone across the door of the tomb, he left, 61 but Mary Magdalene[z] and the other Mary remained there, sitting in front of the tomb.

The Tomb is Secured

62 The following day (that is, after the Day of Preparation), the high priests and Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said while he was still alive, ‘I will be raised after three days.’ 64 Therefore, order the tomb to be secured until the third day, or his disciples may go and steal him and then tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ Then the last deception would be worse than the first one.”

65 Pilate told them, “You have[aa] a military guard. Go and make the tomb[ab] as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and secured the tomb by putting a seal on the stone in the presence of the guards.
