谴责宗教的伪善
23 那时，耶稣对众人和自己的门徒们说： 2 “经文士和法利赛人坐在摩西的位子上， 3 所以，他们所吩咐你们的，你们都要去做，也要遵守；但是不要效法他们的行为，因为他们说而不做。 4 他们把沉重难挑的[a]担子捆起来，放在人们肩上，但自己却连一根指头也不肯动它们一下。 5 他们所做的一切事，都是为了给人看：他们把自己的经文盒加宽，把衣服的[b]穗子加长； 6 他们喜爱宴席中的上座和会堂里的首位， 7 喜爱街市上的致敬问候，又喜爱被人们称为‘老师[c]’。
8 “但你们不可被称为‘老师[d]’，因为你们的老师只有一位，[e]而你们都是弟兄。 9 不要称地上的任何人为‘父’，因为你们的父只有一位，就是天父。 10 你们也不要被人称为‘主人’，因为你们的主人只有一位，就是基督。 11 你们当中谁更大，谁就该做你们的仆人， 12 因为凡是自我高举的都会被降卑，而自我降卑的都会被高举。
13 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们在人的面前封闭了天国。你们自己不进去，也不让正要进的人进去。
14 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们侵吞寡妇的家产，又假意做很长的祷告。因此，你们将受到更重的惩罚。[f]
15 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们为了使一个人入教，走遍海洋和陆地，一旦那人成了教徒[g]，你们就使他成为比你们加倍坏的地狱之子。
16 “你们这些瞎眼的领路人有祸了！你们说：‘如果有人指着圣所起誓，算不得什么；但如果有人指着圣所里的金子起誓，就必须遵守。’ 17 你们这些又愚拙又瞎眼的人哪，到底哪一样更重要呢？是金子，还是使金子成圣的圣所呢？ 18 你们还说：‘如果有人指着祭坛起誓，算不得什么；但如果有人指着祭坛上的祭物起誓，就必须遵守。’ 19 你们这些[h]瞎眼的人哪，到底哪一样更重要呢？是祭物，还是使祭物成圣的祭坛呢？ 20 所以，指着祭坛起誓的，就是指着祭坛和祭坛上的一切起誓； 21 指着圣所起誓的，就是指着圣所和住在里面的那一位起誓； 22 指着天起誓的，就是指着神的宝座和坐在宝座上的那一位起誓。
23 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们奉献薄荷、莳萝、香芹的十分之一，却放弃了律法上更重要的：就是公义、怜悯、信实。这些才是你们应该做的，至于前者也不可放弃。 24 你们这些瞎眼的领路人哪，你们滤掉蠓虫，却吞下骆驼！
25 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们洗净杯子、盘子的外面，里面却盛满了贪心和放纵。 26 你这瞎眼的法利赛人哪！当先洗净杯子[i]的里面，好使外面也洁净。
27 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们好像粉饰的坟墓，外面固然显得美丽，里面却装满了死人骨头和一切污秽。 28 你们也是这样，你们外面对人显出公义，里面却充满了伪善和罪恶[j]。
29 “经文士和法利赛人哪，你们这些伪善的人有祸了！因为你们建造先知的坟墓，装饰义人的墓碑， 30 说：‘如果我们活在我们祖先的时代，我们就不会与他们合伙流先知们的血。’ 31 这样，你们就见证了自己是杀害先知们的那些人的后代。 32 你们去充满你们祖先的恶贯吧！
33 “你们这些蛇类，这些毒蛇的子孙！你们怎么能逃避地狱的惩罚呢？ 34 看，我为此差派先知、智者、经师到你们这里来；有些你们要杀害、要钉上十字架，有些要在会堂里鞭打，从一个城追逼到另一个城。 35 所以，从义人亚伯的血起，直到你们在圣所和祭坛之间所杀的巴拉加的儿子撒迦利亚的血为止，在地上所流的义人的血都要归在你们身上。 36 我确实地告诉你们：这一切都要临到这世代。

23 随后，耶稣对百姓和门徒说： 2 “律法教师和法利赛人坐在摩西的位子上讲授律法。 3 你们要谨遵他们的教导，但不要效法他们的行为，因为他们言行不一。 4 他们捆好重担放在别人肩上，而自己连一根指头也不肯动！
5 “他们的所作所为是为了给人看的，他们把额上佩戴的经文盒子加宽了，又将衣裳的穗边加长了。 6 他们喜欢宴席中的上座和会堂里的首位。 7 他们喜欢别人在街市上问候他们，称呼他们为老师[a]。 8 但你们不要让别人称呼你们为老师，因为你们只有一位老师，你们彼此都是弟兄。 9 不要称呼地上的人为父亲，因为你们只有一位父亲，祂在天上。 10 不要让人称你们为导师，因为你们只有一位导师——基督。 11 你们当中谁最伟大，谁就要做你们的仆人。 12 自高的人必遭贬抑，谦卑的人必得尊荣。

16 “瞎眼的向导啊，你们有祸了！你们说，‘指着圣殿发誓，不算数；但是指着圣殿里的金子发誓，就要遵守誓言。’ 17 无知的瞎子啊！金子重要呢？还是使金子神圣的圣殿重要呢？ 18 你们又说，‘指着祭坛发誓不算数，但是指着坛上的供物发誓，就要遵守誓言。’ 19 瞎眼的人啊！供物重要呢？还是使供物神圣的祭坛重要呢？ 20 其实指着祭坛发誓，就是指着祭坛和坛上的一切东西发誓。 21 指着圣殿发誓，就是指着圣殿和住在里面的上帝发誓。 22 指着天发誓，就是指着上帝的宝座和坐在宝座上的那位发誓。
23 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们把薄荷、茴香、芹菜献上十分之一，却忽略了律法中更重要的事——公正、怜悯、信实。后者是你们本该做的，前者也不可忽略。 24 瞎眼的向导啊！你们滤出蚊虫，却吞下骆驼。

29 “虚伪的律法教师和法利赛人啊，你们有祸了！你们为先知建墓，为义人修碑，并且说， 30 ‘如果我们活在我们祖先的时代，绝不会和他们一起去杀害先知。’ 31 这样，你们自己证明自己是杀害先知之人的后代。 32 去填满你们祖先的罪恶吧！ 33 你们这些蛇，这些毒蛇的后代啊，你们怎能逃脱地狱的刑罚呢？

Jesus Accuses Some Leaders(A)
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his ·followers [disciples], 2 “The ·teachers of the law [scribes] and the Pharisees ·have the authority to interpret what the law of Moses says [L sit in Moses’ seat/chair]. 3 So you should ·obey [do; practice] and ·follow [keep; observe] whatever they tell you, but ·their lives are not good examples for you to follow [L do not follow their actions]. ·They tell you to do things, but they themselves don’t do them [L For they say but do not do]. 4 They ·make strict rules [L tie up heavy loads/burdens that are hard to carry] and ·try to force people to obey them [L put them on people’s shoulders], but they are unwilling to ·help those who struggle under the weight of their rules [lift a finger to move them; L move them with their finger].
5 “They do good things so that other people will see them. They enlarge ·the little boxes holding Scriptures that they wear [L their phylacteries; C leather cases worn on the left arm and forehead to literally fulfill Deut. 6:8; 11:18], and they ·make their special prayer clothes very long [L lengthen their tassels; C Jewish males were to wear tassels on the four corners of their garment; Num. 15:38; Deut. 22:12]. 6 Those Pharisees and teachers of the law love to have the ·most important seats [places of greatest honor] at ·feasts [banquets] and [L the best seats] in the synagogues. 7 They love people to greet them with respect in the marketplaces, and they love to have people call them ·‘Teacher [L Rabbi].’
8 “But you must not be called ‘·Teacher [Rabbi],’ because you have only one Teacher, and you are all brothers and sisters together. 9 And don’t call any person on earth ‘Father,’ because you have one Father, who is in heaven. 10 And you should not be called ‘·Master [Leader; Teacher; Instructor]’ because you have only one ·Master [Leader; Teacher; Instructor], the ·Christ [Messiah]. 11 ·Whoever is your servant is the greatest among you [L The greatest among you will be your servant]. 12 Whoever ·makes himself great [lifts up/exalts himself] will be made humble. Whoever makes himself humble will be ·made great [exalted; lifted up].
13 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! [L Because] You ·close [shut; lock] the door for people to enter the kingdom of heaven. You ·take away [L devour] widows’ houses, and you say long prayers ·so that people will notice you [as a pretense]. So you will have a worse ·punishment [condemnation].|[a]

You travel across land and sea to ·find one person who will change to your ways [L make one convert/proseltye]. When you ·find that person [make that convert], you make him ·more fit for hell than [L twice the son of hell/Gehenna that; 5:22] you are.
16 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you! ·You guide the people, but you are blind [L Blind guides!]. You say, ‘If people ·swear [make an oath/vow] by the Temple when they make a promise, that means nothing. But if they swear by the gold that is in the Temple, they ·must keep that promise [are obligated/bound].’ 17 You are blind fools! Which is greater: the gold or the Temple that makes that gold ·holy [sacred; sanctified]? 18 And you say, ‘If people ·swear [make an oath/vow] by the altar when they make a promise, that means nothing. But if they ·swear [make an oath/vow] by the ·gift [offering] on the altar, they ·must keep that promise [are obligated/bound].’ 19 You are blind! Which is greater: the ·gift [offering] or the altar that makes the gift ·holy [sacred; sanctified]? 20 [L So; Therefore] The person who swears by the altar is really swearing by the altar and also everything on the altar. 21 And the person who swears by the Temple is really swearing by the Temple and the One who ·lives [dwells] in the Temple. 22 The person who swears by heaven is also swearing by God’s throne and the One who sits on that throne.
23 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You ·give to God one-tenth of [pay tithe on] everything you have—even your mint, dill, and cumin. But you ·don’t obey [ignore; neglect] the ·really important teachings [L weightier matters] of the law—justice, mercy, and ·being loyal [faith; faithfulness]. These are the things you should do, ·as well as [without neglecting] those other things. 24 ·You guide the people, but you are blind! [L Blind guides!] You ·are like a person who picks a fly out of a drink and then swallows a camel [L strain out a gnat, but swallow a camel; C worrying about the smallest mistakes while committing the biggest sins]!
25 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You ·wash [clean] the outside of your cups and dishes [C for ceremonial purity], but inside they are full of ·things you got by cheating others and by pleasing only yourselves [L greed/robbery and self-indulgence]. 26 Pharisees, you are blind! First make the inside of the cup[b] clean, and then the outside ·can be truly [or will also be] clean.
27 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You are like ·tombs that are painted white [whitewashed tombs]. Outside, those tombs ·look fine [appear beautiful], but inside, they are full of the bones of dead people and all kinds of ·unclean things [filth; corruption; impurity]. 28 It is the same with you. ·People look at you and think you are good [or On the outside you look like righteous people], but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and ·evil [lawlessness].
29 “·How terrible for [L Woe to] you, ·teachers of the law [scribes] and Pharisees! You are hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets, and you ·show honor to [decorate; adorn] the graves of ·those who lived good lives [L the righteous]. 30 You say, ‘If we had lived during the time of our ancestors, we would not have ·helped them kill [L been partners in the blood of] the prophets.’ 31 But you ·give proof [L testify against yourselves] that you are ·descendants [sons; children] of those who murdered the prophets. 32 ·And you will complete the sin that your ancestors started [or Go ahead and finish what your fathers started!; L Fill up the measure of your fathers].
33 “You ·are snakes [serpents]! A ·family of poisonous snakes [T brood/offspring of vipers]! How are you going to escape ·God’s judgment [the sentence/judgment/damnation of hell/Gehenna; 5:22]? 34 ·So I tell you this [For this reason]: I am sending to you prophets and wise men and ·teachers [scribes; experts in the law]. Some of them you will kill and crucify. 37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone to death those who are sent to you. ·Many times [How often] I wanted to gather your ·people [L children] as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you ·did not let me [refused]. 38 ·Now [L Look; T Behold] your house ·will be [L is] left ·completely empty [abandoned; deserted; desolate; Jer. 22:5]. 39 [L For] I tell you, you will not see me again until that time when you will say, ‘·God bless [L Blessed is] the One who comes in the name of the Lord [Ps. 118:26].’”

23 Então, falou Jesus à multidão e aos seus discípulos, 2 dizendo: Na cadeira de Moisés, estão assentados os escribas e fariseus. 3 Observai, pois, e praticai tudo o que vos disserem; mas não procedais em conformidade com as suas obras, porque dizem e não praticam. 4 Pois atam fardos pesados e difíceis de suportar, e os põem sobre os ombros dos homens; eles, porém, nem com o dedo querem movê-los. 5 E fazem todas as obras a fim de serem vistos pelos homens, pois trazem largos filactérios, e alargam as franjas das suas vestes, 6 e amam os primeiros lugares nas ceias, e as primeiras cadeiras nas sinagogas, 7 e as saudações nas praças, e o serem chamados pelos homens: — Rabi, Rabi. 8 Vós, porém, não queirais ser chamados Rabi, porque um só é o vosso Mestre, a saber, o Cristo, e todos vós sois irmãos. 9 E a ninguém na terra chameis vosso pai, porque um só é o vosso Pai, o qual está nos céus. 10 Nem vos chameis mestres, porque um só é o vosso Mestre, que é o Cristo. 11 Porém o maior dentre vós será vosso servo. 12 E o que a si mesmo se exaltar será humilhado; e o que a si mesmo se humilhar será exaltado.

15 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que percorreis o mar e a terra para fazer um prosélito; e, depois de o terdes feito, o fazeis filho do inferno duas vezes mais do que vós.
16 Ai de vós, condutores cegos! Pois que dizeis: Qualquer que jurar pelo templo, isso nada é; mas o que jurar pelo ouro do templo, esse é devedor. 17 Insensatos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: o ouro ou o templo, que santifica o ouro? 18 E aquele que jurar pelo altar, isso nada é; mas aquele que jurar pela oferta que está sobre o altar, esse é devedor. 19 Insensatos e cegos! Pois qual é maior: a oferta ou o altar, que santifica a oferta? 20 Portanto, o que jurar pelo altar jura por ele e por tudo o que sobre ele está. 21 E o que jurar pelo templo jura por ele e por aquele que nele habita. 22 E o que jurar pelo céu jura pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que está assentado nele.
23 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que dais o dízimo da hortelã, do endro e do cominho e desprezais o mais importante da lei, o juízo, a misericórdia e a fé; deveis, porém, fazer essas coisas e não omitir aquelas. 24 Condutores cegos! Coais um mosquito e engolis um camelo.
25 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que limpais o exterior do copo e do prato, mas o interior está cheio de rapina e de iniquidade. 26 Fariseu cego! Limpa primeiro o interior do copo e do prato, para que também o exterior fique limpo.
27 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que sois semelhantes aos sepulcros caiados, que por fora realmente parecem formosos, mas interiormente estão cheios de ossos de mortos e de toda imundícia. 28 Assim, também vós exteriormente pareceis justos aos homens, mas interiormente estais cheios de hipocrisia e de iniquidade.
29 Ai de vós, escribas e fariseus, hipócritas! Pois que edificais os sepulcros dos profetas e adornais os monumentos dos justos 30 e dizeis: Se existíssemos no tempo de nossos pais, nunca nos associaríamos com eles para derramar o sangue dos profetas. 31 Assim, vós mesmos testificais que sois filhos dos que mataram os profetas. 32 Enchei vós, pois, a medida de vossos pais. 33 Serpentes, raça de víboras! Como escapareis da condenação do inferno? 34 Portanto, eis que eu vos envio profetas, sábios e escribas; e a uns deles matareis e crucificareis; e a outros deles açoitareis nas vossas sinagogas e os perseguireis de cidade em cidade, 35 para que sobre vós caia todo o sangue justo, que foi derramado sobre a terra, desde o sangue de Abel, o justo, até ao sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, que matastes entre o santuário e o altar. 36 Em verdade vos digo que todas essas coisas hão de vir sobre esta geração.

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(A)(B)
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law(C) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(D)
5 “Everything they do is done for people to see:(E) They make their phylacteries[a](F) wide and the tassels on their garments(G) long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(H) 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(I)
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(J) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(L)
Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(M) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(N) [14] [b]
15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(O) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(P) as you are.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(Q) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(R) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(S) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(T) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(U) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(V)
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(W) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(X) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(Y) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(Z) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(AA) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(AB) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(AC) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(AD) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(AE) what your ancestors started!(AF)
33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(AG) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(AH) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(AI) others you will flog in your synagogues(AJ) and pursue from town to town.(AK) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(AL) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(AM) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(AN) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(AO)
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(AP) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AQ) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(AR) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[c]”(AS)
