不可因传统废弃 神的诫命(A)

15 有法利赛人和经学家从耶路撒冷前来,问耶稣: “你的门徒为甚么违背古人的传统,在饭前不洗手呢?” 耶稣回答:“你们又为甚么因你们的传统,违背 神的诫命呢?  神说:‘当孝敬父母’,又说:‘咒骂父母的必被处死’。 你们却说:‘人若对父母说:“我应该给你们的,已经作了献给 神的礼物”, 他就可以不孝敬父母了。’你们因为你们的传统,就废弃了 神的话。 伪君子啊,以赛亚指着你们说的预言说得好:

‘这人民用嘴唇尊敬我,心却远离我;

他们把人的规条当作道理去教导人,

所以拜我也是徒然。’”

10 耶稣叫群众前来,对他们说:“你们要听,也要明白。 11 进到口里的不能使人污秽,只有从口里出来的,才能使人污秽。” 12 门徒前来告诉他:“法利赛人听了这话很生气,你知道吗?” 13 耶稣说:“所有不是我天父栽种的植物,都要连根拔起来。 14 由得他们吧!他们是瞎眼的,却作了向导;如果瞎子领瞎子,二人都会跌进坑里。” 15 彼得说:“请你给我们解释这个比喻吧。” 16 耶稣说:“你们还是不明白吗? 17 难道不知道一切进到口里的,是进到肚腹,然后排泄到外面(“外面”或译:“厕所”)去吗? 18 但从口里出来的,是发自内心,才会使人污秽。 19 因为从心里出来的,有恶念、凶杀、奸淫、淫乱、偷盗、假见证和毁谤。 20 这些才会使人污秽,不洗手吃饭却不会这样。”

迦南妇人的信心(B)

21 耶稣离开那里,退到推罗、西顿境内。 22 有一个迦南的妇人从那地区出来,喊着说:“主啊,大卫的子孙,可怜我吧!我的女儿被鬼附得很苦。” 23 耶稣一句话也不回答她。门徒上前求他说:“请叫她走吧,她一直跟在我们后面喊叫。” 24 耶稣回答:“我被差遣,只是到以色列家的迷羊那里去。” 25 她来跪在耶稣面前说:“主啊,求你帮助我!” 26 耶稣回答:“拿儿女的饼丢给小狗吃是不好的。” 27 她说:“主啊,是的,不过小狗也吃主人桌子上掉下来的碎渣。” 28 于是耶稣对她说:“妇人,你的信心真大,照你所想的给你成就吧!”从那时起,她的女儿就好了。

治好许多病人(C)

29 耶稣离开那里,来到加利利海边,就上山坐下。 30 有许多人来到他那里,把瘸腿的、瞎眼的、残废的、哑的和许多别的病人,都带到耶稣跟前,他就医好他们。 31 群众看见哑巴说话,残废的复原,瘸腿的行走,瞎眼的看见,就十分惊奇,于是颂赞以色列的 神。

给四千人吃饱的神迹(D)

32 耶稣叫门徒前来,说:“我怜悯这一群人,因为他们跟我在一起已经有三天,也没有甚么吃的;我不想叫他们饿着肚子回去,恐怕他们在路上晕倒。” 33 门徒对他说:“我们在这旷野地方,哪里有足够的食物给这许多的人吃饱呢?” 34 耶稣问他们:“你们有多少饼?”他们说:“七个饼和几条小鱼。” 35 他就吩咐群众坐在地上, 36 拿起那七个饼和那些鱼,祝谢了,擘开递给门徒,门徒又分给众人。 37 大家都吃了,并且吃饱了。他们把剩下的零碎拾起来,装满了七个大篮子。 38 吃的人,除了妇女和孩子,共有四千。 39 耶稣解散了群众,就上了船,来到马加丹地区。

傳統與誡命

15 有幾個法利賽人和律法教師從耶路撒冷來質問耶穌: 「為什麼你的門徒吃飯前不行洗手禮,破壞祖先的傳統呢?」

耶穌回答說:「為什麼你們拘守傳統而違背上帝的誡命呢? 上帝說,『要孝敬父母』,又說,『咒罵父母的,必被處死。』 你們卻說,『人如果把供養父母的錢奉獻給上帝, 他就不必供養父母。』你們這是用傳統來廢掉上帝的誡命。 你們這些偽君子,以賽亞指著你們說的預言一點沒錯,

『這些人嘴上尊崇我,
心卻遠離我,
他們的教導無非是人的規條,
他們敬拜我也是枉然。』」

10 耶穌召集了眾人,對他們說:「你們要聽,也要明白。 11 入口的東西不會使人污穢,從口中出來的才會使人污穢。」

12 門徒上前對祂說:「你知道嗎?法利賽人聽見你的話很反感。」

13 耶穌回答說:「凡不是我天父栽種的都要被連根拔起來。 14 隨便他們吧!他們是瞎眼的嚮導。瞎子給瞎子領路,二人都會掉進坑裡。」

15 彼得對耶穌說:「請給我們解釋一下這個比喻。」

16 耶穌說:「你們還不明白嗎? 17 豈不知入口的東西都是進到肚子裡,然後排泄到廁所裡嗎? 18 可是,從口中出來的乃是發自內心,會使人污穢。 19 因為從心裡出來的有惡念、謀殺、通姦、淫亂、偷盜、假見證和毀謗, 20 這些東西才使人污穢。不洗手吃飯並不會使人污穢。」

迦南婦人的信心

21 耶穌從那裡退到泰爾和西頓境內。 22 那地方有個迦南的婦人前來大聲懇求耶穌:「主啊!大衛的後裔啊!可憐我吧!我的女兒被鬼附身,受盡折磨!」 23 耶穌卻一言不發。門徒上前求祂說:「請讓她走吧!她老是在後面喊叫。」

24 耶穌說:「我奉差遣只是來尋找以色列家迷失的羊。」

25 那婦人上前跪下,說:「主啊!求你幫幫我吧!」

26 耶穌答道:「把兒女的食物丟給狗吃,不合適。」

27 婦人說:「主啊,沒錯,可是狗也吃主人飯桌上掉下來的碎渣呀!」

28 耶穌說:「婦人,你的信心真大!我答應你的要求。」就在那一刻,她女兒就好了。

耶穌使四千人吃飽

29 耶穌離開那裡,來到加利利湖邊,上了山,在那裡坐下。 30 大群的人把瘸子、瞎子、殘疾的、啞巴及許多別的病人帶來,放在祂腳前,祂就治好了他們。 31 大家看見啞巴說話,殘疾的復原,瘸子走路,瞎子看見,都很驚奇,就讚美以色列的上帝。

32 耶穌把門徒召集過來,對他們說:「我憐憫這些人,他們跟我在一起已經三天,沒有任何吃的。我不願讓他們餓著肚子回去,以免他們在路上體力不支。」

33 門徒說:「在這荒野,我們到哪裡找足夠的食物給這麼多人吃呢?」

34 耶穌問:「你們有多少餅?」

門徒答道:「七個,還有幾條小魚。」

35 耶穌便吩咐大家坐在地上。 36 祂拿著那七個餅和幾條魚祝謝後,掰開,遞給門徒,門徒再分給大家。 37 大家都吃了,並且吃飽了,剩下的零碎裝滿了七個筐子。 38 當時吃飯的,除了婦女和小孩,共有四千男人。 39 隨後,耶穌叫眾人散去,自己坐船去了馬加丹地區。

Chapter 15

Traditions That Falsify the Law of God. Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, [a]“Why do your disciples ignore the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before eating.” He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses his father or mother shall be put to death.’ But you say, ‘If anyone says to his father or mother, “Anything I might have used for your support is dedicated to God,” then he is excused from his duty to honor his father or mother.’ To uphold your tradition you have made God’s word null and void. You hypocrites! How rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you when he said:

‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

10 Clean and Unclean.[b] Then he called the people to him and said to them, “Listen and understand. 11 It is not what goes into one’s mouth that defiles a person; what comes out of the mouth is what defiles him.”

12 The disciples approached and said to him, “Do you realize that the Pharisees were greatly offended when they heard what you said?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my Father has not planted will be uprooted. 14 Leave them alone. They are blind guides. And if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a pit.”

15 Peter said to him, “Explain that parable to us.” 16 Jesus replied, “Are even you still without understanding? 17 Do you not realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes through the stomach and is discharged into the sewer? 18 But what comes out of the mouth originates in the heart, and this is what defiles a person. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander. 20 These are the things that defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not make anyone unclean.”

21 The Faith of a Pagan Woman.[c] Jesus then left that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.[d] 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out to meet him and cried out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David. My daughter is sorely tormented by a demon.” 23 But he did not say a word to her in reply.

So his disciples came and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt at his feet, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 He answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She replied, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, you have great faith. Let it be done for you as you wish.” And from that moment her daughter was healed.

29 Jesus Heals Many People.[e]After leaving that region, Jesus walked along the shores of the Sea of Galilee, and going up onto the mountain, he sat down. 30 Large crowds flocked to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, the mute, and many others. They placed them at his feet, and he cured them. 31 The crowds were amazed when they observed the mute speaking, the crippled made whole, the lame walking, and the blind with their sight restored, and they gave praise to the God of Israel.

32 Jesus Feeds Four Thousand Men. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I am moved with compassion for these people, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

33 The disciples said to him, “Where can we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to feed such a great crowd?” 34 Jesus asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”

35 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward, they picked up seven baskets full of what remained. 38 Those who had eaten numbered four thousand men, not counting women and children. 39 And when he had sent away the crowds, he got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan.

Matthew 15:2 The “oral” tradition consisted of practices and regulations meant to fill out the written Law of Moses; many Pharisaic Jews did not hesitate to claim that this tradition, like the Torah, had been revealed on Sinai. The oral tradition allowed for a vow by which a man could free himself from his obligations to his own parents: the material goods meant for them were promised to God and thus declared “sacred offerings.”
  2. Matthew 15:10 Every ancient religion attempted to distinguish clearly the two notions of clean and unclean as regards objects and affairs of life. The Book of Leviticus proposes a developed code of ritual purity, which was above all a way of expressing the grandeur of God and of establishing laws of respect in the behavior of human beings. However, as time went on, this great inspiration was lost in a soulless formalism. In the tightly regulated life of the Jews of the first century A.D., the dispositions of the heart held such a small place that even the apostles have trouble understanding the teaching of Jesus. He unmasks hypocrisy. How can one not be shocked by his words, which overturn even the religious assurance of humans!
  3. Matthew 15:21 The Israelites regarded themselves as children of God because they were heirs of the promises made to the patriarchs and depositaries of the divine revelation. On the contrary, they called the Gentiles dogs out of contempt for their idolatrous and immoral practices. Jesus makes use of these two terms but softens the second, which in the Greek is “little dogs,” i.e., pet dogs in the home. His point was that the Gospel was to be offered first to the Jews. The woman understood his implication and was willing to settle for the “crumbs.” Jesus rewarded her faith.
  4. Matthew 15:21 Tyre and Sidon: these were Phoenician cities; Canaanite was the ancient name of their populations.
  5. Matthew 15:29 This second miracle of the loaves has many analogies with the first multiplication of the loaves. Therefore, some exegetes speak of a duplication, i.e., a different reporting of the same episode. However, there are so many diverse circumstances in the two episodes that Matthew and Mark believe in two distinct miracles.

15 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying, “Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”

He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition? For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’(A) and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’(B) But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,” he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition. You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

‘These people draw near to me with their mouth,
    and honor me with their lips;
    but their heart is far from me.
And they worship me in vain,
    teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’”(C)

10 He summoned the multitude, and said to them, “Hear, and understand. 11 That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”

12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”

13 But he answered, “Every plant which my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted. 14 Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter answered him, “Explain the parable to us.”

16 So Jesus said, “Do you also still not understand? 17 Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly and then out of the body? 18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies. 20 These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”

21 Jesus went out from there and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”

23 But he answered her not a word.

His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”

24 But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

25 But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”

26 But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

27 But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”

28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.

29 Jesus departed from there and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up on the mountain and sat there. 30 Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them, 31 so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the injured healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.

32 Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way.”

33 The disciples said to him, “Where could we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?”

34 Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?”

They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

35 He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground; 36 and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes. 37 They all ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over. 38 Those who ate were four thousand men, in addition to women and children. 39 Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.

Obey God’s Law(A)

15 Then some Pharisees and ·teachers of the law [scribes] came to Jesus from Jerusalem. They asked him, “Why don’t your ·followers [disciples] obey the ·unwritten laws which have been handed down to us [L traditions of the elders]? [L For] They don’t wash their hands before they eat [C a Jewish ritual for ceremonial purity].”

Jesus answered, “And why do you ·refuse to obey [break; violate] God’s command ·so that you can follow your own teachings [L for the sake of your traditions]? God said, ‘Honor your father and your mother [Ex. 20:12; Deut. 5:16],’ and ‘Anyone who ·says cruel things to [speaks evil of; curses] his father or mother must be put to death [Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9].’ But you say a person can tell his father or mother, ‘I have something I could use to help you, but I have ·given [dedicated; devoted] it to God already [C a practice known as Corban; see Mark 7:10–12].’ You teach that person ·not to [that he need not] honor his father or his mother. You ·rejected [invalidated; canceled; nullified] ·what God said [L the word of God] for the sake of your own ·rules [tradition]. You are hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he ·said [L prophesied] about you:

‘These people show honor to me with ·words [L their lips],
    but their hearts are far from me.
Their worship of me is ·worthless [futile; in vain].
    The things [doctrines] they teach are nothing but human ·rules [commandments; Is. 29:13].’”

10 After Jesus called the crowd to him, he said, “Listen and ·understand what I am saying [try to understand]. 11 It is not what ·people put into their mouths [L goes into the mouth] that ·makes them unclean [pollutes/defiles the person]. It is what comes out of their mouths that ·makes them unclean [pollutes/defiles the person].”

12 Then his ·followers [disciples] came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees are ·angry [offended; shocked] because of what you said?”

13 Jesus answered, “Every plant that my Father in heaven has not planted himself will be pulled up by the roots. 14 ·Stay away from the Pharisees [L Leave/Ignore them]; they are blind ·leaders [guides].[a] And if a blind person ·leads [guides] a blind person, both will fall into a ·ditch [pit; hole].”

15 Peter said, “Explain the ·example [parable] to us.”

16 Jesus said, “·Do you still not understand [L Are you still so dull/foolish]? 17 ·Surely you know [L Don’t you know…?] that all the food that enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then goes ·out of the body [L into the sewer/latrine].” 18 But ·what people say with their mouths [L the things that come out of the mouth] comes from the ·way they think [L the heart]; these are the things that ·make people unclean [pollute/defiled a person]. 19 [L For] Out of the ·mind [heart] come evil ·thoughts [intentions; ideas], murder, adultery, sexual sins, stealing, ·lying [false witness/testimony], and ·speaking evil of others [slander; blasphemy]. 20 These things make people ·unclean [polluted; defiled]; eating with unwashed hands does not make them ·unclean [polluted; defiled].”

Jesus Helps a Gentile Woman(B)

21 Jesus left that place and went to the ·area [district; region] of Tyre and Sidon [C cities on the coast north of Israel]. 22 A ·Canaanite [C a non-Jewish (Gentile) resident of Palestine (Canaan was the ancient name for Palestine)] woman from that area came to Jesus and cried out, “Lord, Son of David [C a title for the Messiah], have mercy on me! My daughter ·has a demon, and she is suffering very much [is tormented; L is severely demon-possessed].”

23 But Jesus did not ·answer the woman [L answer her a word]. So his ·followers [disciples] came to Jesus and ·begged [asked; urged] him, “Tell the woman to go away. [L Because] She is following us and ·shouting [crying out].”

24 Jesus answered, “·God sent me [L I was sent] only to the lost sheep, the ·people [L house] of Israel.”

25 Then the woman came to Jesus again and bowed before him and said, “Lord, help me!”

26 Jesus answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and ·give [throw] it to the dogs.” [C “Children” refers to Israel; “dogs” to the Gentiles.]

27 The woman said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”

28 Then Jesus answered, “[L O] Woman, you have great faith! ·I will do what you asked [L Let it be done for you as you wish].” And ·at that moment [L from that hour] the woman’s daughter was healed.

Jesus Heals Many People(C)

29 After leaving there, Jesus went along ·the shore of Lake Galilee [T the Sea of Galilee]. He went up on ·a hill [or the mountain] and sat there.

30 Great crowds came to Jesus, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, ·those who could not speak [the mute/deaf; C the word can refer to speech or hearing; v. 31 suggests it here means “mute”], and many others. They ·put [laid] them at Jesus’ feet, and he healed them. 31 The crowd was ·amazed [astonished; marveled] when they saw that ·people who could not speak before [the mute/deaf] were now able to speak. The crippled were ·made strong [well; whole]. The lame could walk, and the blind could see. And they ·praised [glorified] the God of Israel for this.

More than Four Thousand Fed(D)

32 Jesus called his ·followers [disciples] to him and said, “I ·feel sorry [have compassion] for these people, because they have already been with me three days, and they have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry. They might ·faint [collapse] while going home.”

33 His ·followers [disciples] asked him, “·How [L From where] can we get enough bread in this ·remote place [desolate place; desert] to feed ·all these people [L so great a crowd]?”

34 Jesus asked, “How many loaves of bread do you have?”

They answered, “Seven, and a few small fish.”

35 Jesus told the people to ·sit [recline] on the ground. 36 He took the seven loaves of bread and the fish and gave thanks to God. Then he ·divided the food [L broke them] and gave it to his ·followers [disciples], and they gave it to the people. 37 All the people ate and were satisfied. Then his ·followers [disciples] filled seven ·baskets [large baskets; C a different word than in the feeding of the five thousand; 14:20] with the leftover pieces of food. 38 There were about four thousand men there who ate, besides women and children. 39 After ·sending the people home [dismissing the crowds], Jesus got into the boat and went to the ·area [region] of Magadan [C an unknown place, probably on the western shore of Lake Galilee; perhaps Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene].
