施洗者约翰之死

14 分封王希律听见耶稣的名声， 2 就对臣仆说：“这个人是施洗者约翰！他从死里复活了，所以能够行这些神迹。”

3 原来希律为他兄弟腓力的妻子希罗底的缘故，拘捕了约翰，把他捆绑起来关在监里。 4 因为约翰曾多次对他说：“你娶这个妇人是不对的。” 5 他想杀掉约翰，但怕触怒百姓，因为他们都认为约翰是先知。

6 在希律的生日那天，希罗底的女儿出来在众人面前跳舞。希律非常高兴， 7 就起誓答应她无论要什么都可以。 8 她受了母亲的指使，说：“请把施洗者约翰的头放在盘子里送给我。” 9 希律感到为难，但既然在众宾客面前起了誓，只好下令给她。 10 他派人到监里砍了约翰的头， 11 放在盘子里送给她，她转送给她母亲。 12 约翰的门徒把尸体领回安葬后，就去告诉耶稣。

13 耶稣听见这个消息，就独自坐船退到一处偏僻的地方。众人得知后，就从各城步行来跟随祂。

耶稣使五千人吃饱

14 耶稣上了岸，看见一大群人，心里怜悯他们，就治好了他们当中的病人。 15 黄昏时，门徒过来对耶稣说：“这里是荒郊野外，天又晚了，请遣散众人，好让他们到村庄去自己买些吃的。”

16 耶稣回答说：“他们不用离开，你们给他们吃的吧。”

17 门徒答道：“我们这里只有五个饼和两条鱼。”

18 耶稣说：“拿来给我。”

19 于是，祂叫众人坐在草地上，然后拿起那五个饼和两条鱼，举目望着天祝谢后，就掰开饼递给门徒，让他们分给众人。 20 大家都吃饱了，把剩下的零碎收拾起来，竟装满了十二个篮子。 21 当时吃饭的，除了妇女和小孩，约有五千男人。

耶稣在水上行走

22 随后，耶稣催门徒上船，叫他们先渡到湖对岸，祂则遣散众人。 23 待众人都离开了，祂就独自上山去祷告，在那里一直待到晚上。

24 那时，门徒的船离岸已远，遇到逆风，船身被波浪撞击得摇摆不定。 25 天将破晓的时候，耶稣从水面上向门徒走去。 26 门徒看见有人在湖面上走，都吓坏了，说：“是幽灵！”他们害怕得又喊又叫。

27 耶稣立刻对他们说：“放心吧！是我，不要怕。”

28 彼得说：“主啊！如果真的是你，就叫我从水面上走到你那里。”

29 耶稣说：“好，你来吧！”

于是，彼得就从船上下去，走在湖面上，要去耶稣那里。 30 他看到风浪很大，就害怕起来，身体开始往下沉，便大喊：“主啊，救我！”

31 耶稣马上伸手拉住他，说：“你信心太小了！为什么怀疑呢？”

32 他们上了船，风浪就平静了。 33 船上的人都敬拜祂，说：“你真是上帝的儿子。”

34 他们渡到湖对岸，来到革尼撒勒。 35 当地的人认出是耶稣，就派人去把附近所有的病人都带到祂面前， 36 求耶稣让他们摸一摸祂衣裳的穗边，所有摸过的病人都好了。

Herod Kills John the Baptist

14 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus 2 and he said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist! He has been raised from the dead, and for this reason miraculous powers are at work in him.” 3 For Herod, after[a] arresting John, bound him and put him[b] in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, 4 because John had been saying to him, “It is not permitted for you to have her.” 5 And although he[c] wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they looked upon him as a prophet.

6 But when[d] Herod’s birthday celebration took place, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst of them and pleased Herod. 7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 And coached by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter!” 9 And although[e] the king was distressed, because of his oaths and his dinner guests[f] he commanded the request[g] to be granted. 10 And he sent orders[h] and[i] had John beheaded in the prison, 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it[j] to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and[k] took away the corpse and buried it, and went and[l] told Jesus.

The Feeding of Five Thousand

13 Now when[m] Jesus heard it,[n] he withdrew from there in a boat to an isolated place by himself. And when[o] the crowds heard it,[p] they followed him by land from the towns. 14 And as he[q] got out, he saw the large crowd and had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15 Now when it[r] was evening, the disciples came to him saying, “The place is desolate and the hour is late.[s] Release the crowds so that they can go away into the villages and[t] purchase food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need[u] to go away. You give them something[v] to eat.” 17 And they said to him, “We do not have anything[w] here except five loaves and two fish.” 18 So he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 And he commanded the crowds to recline for a meal on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and[x] looking up to heaven, he gave thanks. And after[y] breaking them,[z] he gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them[aa] to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 Now those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.

Jesus Walks on the Water

22 And immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent away the crowds. 23 And after he[ab] sent away the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. So when[ac] evening came, he was there alone. 24 But the boat was already many stadia distant from the land, being beaten by the waves, because the wind was against it. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But the disciples, when they[ad] saw him walking on the sea, were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Have courage, I am he! Do not be afraid!” 28 And Peter answered him and[ae] said, “Lord, if it is you,[af] command me to come to you on the water!” 29 So he said, “Come!” And getting out of the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he[ag] saw the strong wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 And immediately Jesus extended his[ah] hand and[ai] caught him and said to him, “You of little faith! Why did you doubt?” 32 And when[aj] they got into the boat, the wind abated. 33 So those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God!”

Many Healed at Gennesaret

34 And after they[ak] had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when[al] the men of that place recognized him, they sent word into that whole surrounding region, and they brought to him all those who were sick.[am] 36 And they were imploring him that they might only touch the edge[an] of his cloak, and all those who touched it[ao] were cured.

Worldwide English (New Testament)

14 At this time Herod the ruler heard of Jesus.

2 He said to his servants, `This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from death. That is why he is able to do such great work.'

3 Herod had taken John and tied him up. He put him in prison. He did this because of Herodias. She was the wife of his brother Philip.

4 John had said to Herod, `It is not right for you to have her for your wife.'

5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people. They thought John was a prophet, a man of God.

6 On Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for the people who were there. She pleased Herod.

7 He was so pleased that he promised to give her anything she asked for.

8 The girl's mother told her what to ask for. So she said, `Give me here, on a plate, the head of John the Baptizer.'

9 The king was very sorry to do this. But he had made a promise. And all the people who were there had heard him promise. So he gave orders to do it.

10 He sent someone to the prison to cut off John's head.

11 John's head was brought on a plate. It was given to the girl. And she took it to her mother.

12 Then John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. They went and told Jesus.

13 When Jesus heard this, he went away from there in a boat. He went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard that he went away and they followed him. They walked from the towns around there.

14 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw many people. He was sorry for them and he healed those who were sick.

15 In the evening the disciples came to him. They said, `This is a lonely place. And the time is late. Send these people away so they can go to the farms and villages to buy food for themselves.'

16 Jesus said to them, `They need not go away. You give them food to eat.'

17 They said, `We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish.'

18 Jesus said, `Bring them here to me.'

19 Then Jesus told the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and thanked God for them. Then he broke the bread and gave it to the disciples. The disciples gave it to the people.

20 They all ate and had enough. They gathered twelve baskets full of pieces that were left.

21 The number of men who ate was about five thousand, besides some women and children.

22 Then Jesus told the disciples, `You get into the boat right away and go ahead of me to the other side of the sea. And I will send these people away.'

23 After he had sent them away, he went up on the hill by himself to talk with God. Evening came and he was there alone.

24 The boat was far out on the water by this time. The water was beating against the boat and the wind was blowing the wrong way.

25 When it was almost morning, Jesus came to them. He was walking on the water.

26 His disciples saw him walking on the water. They were afraid, and said, `It is a spirit!' Then they shouted loudly because they were afraid.

27 Then Jesus spoke to them right away. He said, `Be glad! It is I. Do not fear.'

28 Peter said, `Lord, if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.'

29 Jesus said, `Come.' So Peter got out of the boat. He walked on the water and went toward Jesus.

30 He saw what the wind did. Then he was afraid and began to go down in the water. He called out, `Lord, save me!'

31 Right away Jesus put out his hand and took hold of him. He said, `You do not believe very much in me! Why did you not believe?'

32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped blowing.

33 Then the men in the boat bowed down in front of Jesus. They said, `You really are the Son of God.'

34 They crossed over the sea and came to the land at Gennesaret.

35 The men there knew him and sent word to the people in all the country around. They brought all the sick people to him.

36 They begged Jesus to let them touch his clothes. And all the people who touched him were healed.

6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(I) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(J) Then they went and told Jesus.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(K)(L)

13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(M) and healed their sick.(N)

15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

17 “We have here only five loaves(O) of bread and two fish,” they answered.

18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(P) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(S) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(T) they said, and cried out in fear.

27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(U) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(V)

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(W) he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(X)
